HOW TO: Rom Upgrade - Universal / XDA Exec

Well, this is pretty newbie advice to most of you, so you may think it doesn't warrant a write up, but I had to do some searching for info on how to upgrade my ROM so I thought it would be good to put it all in one thread.
1) Download the ROM you want from the FTP server....Details here http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BA_FTP_Site
2) Download MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe to your Desktop from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/download.php?id=7644
3) Disconnect your device from the USB cable.
4) Hold the Power button + Light bulb button, and press the reset pin found at the back of the device (fiddly if you have large fingers).
You will notice that the screen of the device is dark but has “USB” and "v 1.0" written on it.
5) Connect back your device via the USB cable.
6) Run the download ROM upgrade application...When it prompts you to begin the upgrade process, just minimise the window or leave it alone (DON'T CLOSE THE PROGRAM).
7) Whilst it is running, use Windows to search for a file named RUU.dll
8 ) Right click file and choose ‘Open Containing Folder’
9) Select all files and copy them
10) Create a temporary storage location....C:\Upgrade....And Paste all copied files in here.
11) Copy the file MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe from the desktop into C:\Upgrade
12) Close the previously started upgrade application running in the background
13) Run MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe from it's C:\Upgrade location
The upgrade process should begin now…If it does not, run the MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe application again
Make sure you DO NOT DISCONNECT the cable.
The upgrade takes around 20 minutes to complete.
14: Disconnect the USB cable when told, then push the reset pin. Ignore the advice to do a hard reset by holding down the soft keys while you do this, just push the reset pin by itself. Your Universal will load the new ROM image and you're all done.
Thanks.
Thanks!
There is only one thing, step 4, it is not USB but Serial.

Help!
OK, I made my own instructions. Follow this instruction of mine:
The file is extracted in your computer. Once you run the shipped.exe file, you need to go to:
My Computer
Your Drive (mine is Drive C)
Show the contents of this drive
Documents and Settings
Choose your folder name
Choose "TOOLS" from the menu bar
Choose "FOLDER OPTIONS"
Click on the "VIEW" tab
Click on "HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS"
YOU WANT TO SHOW ALL HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS
Now go to TEMP folder
Now you will notice a bunch of folders will show up, tons of them to be exact. What you need to do now is click on the shipped.exe file again and "LOOK" for the folder being created because that folder is what you want to copy. If you did not see it created, you have to manually open each folder and look for the files I listed below.
Assuming you found the folder, you will have these following files inside that folder:
ms_.nbf----------------------this file is responsible for EXT ROM Version
nk.nbf------------------------this file is responsible for Windows Mobile Version
radio.nbf---------------------this file is responsible for Radio Version
EnterBL
GetDeviceData
readme
ROMUpgradeUt
RUU.conf
RUU.dll
UI.dll
MaUpgradeUt_noID
If the file MaUpgradeUt_noID is not there. You need to get hold of a copy of this file as you need this.
There you have it, REMEMBER, you need to have the MaUpgradeUt_noID file plus all the rest of the file if you want to upgrade to the ENTIRE I-Mate ROM, QTEK, O2, or whatever ROM you want.
If you only want to upgrade to the radio version then you need to delete 2 files namely: "ms_.nbf" and "nk.nbf". Leave "radio.nbf" alone and click on the "MaUpgradeUt_noID" file to initiate the Radio installation. Basically those 3 files control what you want to update on your device.
Hope my instructions were clear enough for you. Hope this helps.
cannot locate files after running exe
Hi All, I have ran the ROM update exe and the message saying extracting file XXX etc appears OK then the program closes. When I search for the files, for instance *.nbf they dont exist anywhere on the computer - does the exe autodelete the temp directory and have I missed a stage ? Any help gratefully accepted

Did you follow the instructions above on how to show hidden files and folders? After double clicking the .exe file and running it, leave it open then look for the NEWLY created folder in the TEMP folder as instructed. You need to look for it the hard way by opening each folder one by one and check for the files to see if you got the right one.
someone advised me for some extra step, someone please advise is it coorect steps:
"Then you need to make a small change to one of the text files. Look in the directory for
RUU.conf
Open it in notepad and add this line
[CHECKCEID_TYPE]=1
then save it
That’s about it….."
thx for reply christian,
yes i tried searching every folder the manual way but still no joy, I have just copied the rom exe onto my other computer and it worked OK on there and updated my exec without any further problems
Hi All, Linked to the update of the exec software , i noticed the audio playback on tom tom navigator and media files is very jerky to the point you can hardly make out what is being said. has anyone else had the same problem and have you found a solution to fix the problem ?
many thanks

Hi
I'd like to take the risk for updating my Dopod 900 for new versions of ROM & radio, but I've got couple of questions.
1. I've got Dopod 900. I do understand, that it's absolutely the same with Qtek9000, but to be sure: may I use ROM update for Qtek?
2. My ROM (1.13.69) & radio (1.04.02) as of 10/12/05 are ancient What version of ROM & radio consider to be stable as of now? I saw in signatures that people using ROM 1.30.77 and radio 1.09.00. Are they OK?
3. I got on FTP and was a bit confused: as far as I understood the latest ROM is 1.30.100 (UNI_QTEK_130100_190_10900_ESN_Ship.exe), but it's for ESN (Spanish???) localization. So in order to get WWE I should use UNI_ORUK_13090_174_10300_WWE_Ship.exe and that update radio separately from 1.03.00 up to 1.09.00 or just UNI_QTEK_13077_176_10900_WWE_Ship.exe? What would u advice me?
4. What is the benefit for updating from 1.13.69 and 1.04.02? Will it works faster & more stable?
Thx in advance & take care
Hi
I tried this and get a 120 (incorrect country ID) error.
Strange, my V1640 from Vodafone is spanish and i want to upgrade to UNI_QTEK_130100_190_10900_ESN_Ship.exe
so it should be ok.
Am i wrong? Is there a way to get rid of that message?
Hi I have a Xda Exec

Rom date 11/30/05
Radio 1.04.02
Protocol 42.37.P8

And when i do this:
4) Hold the Power button + Light bulb button, and press the reset pin found at the back of the device (fiddly if you have large fingers).
The devide says me:
Boot options:
Enable KITL
Clean registry hive
Format storage
I soupouse that it isn´t the boot loader for go on with the proces... what happens?
I want to upgrade to UNI_QTEK_13077_176_10900_WWE_Ship.exe for use my heasphones motorola stereo... (AD2P..)
Can any body help me?
Thanks a lot
Please!!!

It seems that a lot of people are having trouble after a ROM upgrade by following the instructions on the upgrade program which tell them to hard reset.
Many thanks! PU10 by German T-Mobile upgraded to WWE
I have a T mobile mda pro, any recommendations as to what the best rom is.
Im torn between the new orange rom which is supposed to be good and the jasjar one?
Anyone?
Latest jasjar ROM
Hi,
Can I follow these instructions with my UK jasjar?
Where can I find the latest Rom?
Cheers
Anyone can point me out to the adequate ROM?
thanks

what! you havent got a mini USB lead?
how do you activesync or put stuff onto your trinity?
you REALLY should have a USB lead!
I Dont! For Sync and other stuff I use BT or card reader.
So this SD-Upgrade Works or not?
What name do I need to assign to .nbh file?
in hermes is Hermimg.nbh do for Trinity is Trinimg.nbh?
Its easy
Format the SD put there the .nbh and the sspl trin.exe, then execute the exe and starts alone the rom instalation.

isn't easier to buy a usb wire?
Sorry, I wouldn't like to be rude, but I think that this will be the easiest option.
The device is not mine,so I will not bother buying cables.
UPDATE: I have flashed the device, but unfortunately is doesn't boot quiete well.. even the Upgrade procedure is OK.
after the 2nd boot logo,it stucks with white screen.
Led is blinking to indicate the GSM signal and charging-full.
I've tried to reflash another time and it is the same.
Tomorrow I will try another Rom version (was ING Rom 2.28 WM6) now is quiete late and I'm tired-depressed (lol).
News: I upgraded with SSPL via SD with 2.01 rom successfully.
Don't know why the previous didn't worked.

i have a similar problem with a dead O2 XDA Zinc...where do i get the abi file or can i make one from the wm6 upgrade file (Xda_Zinc_RM3070712_WWE_ExtV2.8.0.exe) that i download from the official website
the abi file can be found inside the exe but i dunno how can u extract it since if u use any extractor it will not give u the abi file ... also if u hv the raw rom & want to extract the rom also u will hv difficulty in extracting it
that is the problem that i am facing now
you can extract abi file from Xda_Zinc_RM3070712_WWE_ExtV2.8.0.exe by
1. connect o2 zinc with usb
2. flash your o2 zinc by exe file
3. when complete flash don't push finish button
4. select to view hidden files in folder that you put exe file
5. finally you will see marsii_g4.abi
goodluck & sorry my bad english

reset meaning soft or hard reset?
hard reset or soft reset both does not do any good to remove the error message "unble to open the registry key" and to just reload the orginal applications and remove the others

download the official rom from seeo2 and then make sure ur dev is fully charged ... sync it wz ur pc using active sync then execute the rom (.exe file u hv downloaded)

You mean the WM5 ROM on seeo2? It's still an upgrade ROM, not the original that comes along with the device at the beginning.
Anyway, I'm a newbie so please advice how to 'downgrade' from WM6 to WM5? Is this similar to the process upgrading from WM5 to WM6 (you just sync the device with PC, run the .exe file on the PC and let it go)?
If it's not, please kindly give me detail instruction
Many thanks

Request from a Linux user - Flashing without MS Windows

HI everybody
Like other people on this forum, i'm a linux user
I'm working under Ubuntu Hardy Heron. It's impossible to run any RUU under this system using WINE ( Software than give the possibility to run windows apps under linux ) because it need an active sync connection witch also don't work.
So my request is the following: Can we have a ROM Update utility for our cheer Penguin ?
Big thanks to all developers that works so hard for our community
you and me both: i'm on Linux Mint 5, though
i don't think it's a problem of the people on here: i say it's microsoft's refusing to release drivers for activesync...
There have been attempts made, but i don't know if any of them are going to work with these newer devices... Try googling SynCE...
Hello penguin's friend
SynCE is hard to configure...
But the question is not about synchro, but for ROM updating.
Okay Microsoft is radin... But for upgrading we only need an USB connection for data transfer through the hard SPL.
Activesync is only necessary to retrieve informations from the PDA during an update procedure ( Rom version for example ).
But the flashing procedure doesn't require it ! the prove: when we lunch this procedure the active sync connection stops and the SPL appears on the PDA's screen.
Here is my idea to make it possible under Linux : Run manually SPL on the PDA, and start flashing directly (with USB connection only).
In fact, we only need a ROM Update Utility that pass-through device information retrieving step ( is it really important? ). May be it can works.
All of this could run with wine. But I still think that a native linux RUU is the best way to explore.
There still exist a linux RUU update program (I don't remeber where, but if you make a search into this forum you can find it).
The matter is another one...our diamond don't use the common way to establish a connection with the laptoop ( /ttyUSB0) and so, till now, it's impossible to update...we have to find a workaround for this issues...
I don't understand...
It's the SPL that give necessary connection (usb/serial). Is the problem from it ?
Exactly
Take a look: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=410302
By searching, i found a solution by flashing from a SD card with a special SPL.
Its solution was developed for ARTHEMIS PDA here : http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Artemis_SD_Card_Flashing
Do you think this SPL could work on our diamond ( we don't have SD Card but internal storage ).
I'm afraid to try it. My be it can crash my device permanently ...

GREAT ! i go take a look
Sers,
for Linux, HTC Flasher from the link in previous post is what you need.
It's working well for much HTC devices but Diamond still got some connection issues. It doesn't get attached to any serial port in SPL Mode, so flashing via Linux seems impossible.
Even flashing throught Virtualbox doesn't work because it's impossible to attach the device to the VM.
Maybe you're gonna find a solution, let's hope.

There you're wrong.

In this thread a guy manage to flash Diamond via USB.
OK I have the solution !
It's very simple and don't need any computer!
BE CAREFUL BEFORE STARTING TO HAVE GOOD BATTERY !!!
Install Olinex hard SPL
Connect your PDA to linux in USB Disk mode
Simply copy your .nbh file into internal memory in root folder. rename it to DIAMIMG.NBH
Reset your device with pressing volume down and right key.
You will enter in Olinex SPL flash mode. Wait two seconds and it will ask you if you want to flash from DIAMIMG.nbh !!!
Thanks everybody for your help.
I think this solution is the more simple !
Congrats! Nice find!
This will make things much easyer for many ppl!
regards
demacus
it's much faster than trought async... always used this trick, the only thing to REALLY pay attention to have at least 40/50% of battery
All Right !
Is the file still there afterwards?
Nice find.
Possible to choose from more files?

Well.....The file need that specific name.
You CAN transfer other files and name them, but you wont get a "menu" for choosing.
Just turn to your friend, and use his computer that runs Windows.

How install .NET 3.5 on the HD?

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, but a forum search revealed nothing...
How do I install .NET 3.5 on my Touch HD?
I have installed Advanced Congif , and it tells me i need to install .NET in order for it to work.
I downloaded the .net redistributable file from the MS website (filename is NETCFSetupv35.msi), but when I try to run it on my HD as I would with a .cab file, it tells me there's no associated program to run it.
I guess it has to be installed some other way (through ActiveSync maybe?), but I don't know.
Any helpful soul out there care to put me out of my misery?
Cheers in advance
Pete
Yes it has to be done through Activesync.
run it on your pc, and it will install on your device (or next time you connect if you're not connected when you run it)
It says on the microsoft download page...:
This package uses ActiveSync 4.0 to update the device. Before running NETCFSetupv35.msi, connect your device to your PC. If your device is not connected, ActiveSync will store the CAB file and will not install the package until you connect. If you are not using ActiveSync, run the CAB files on the device that correspond to the device–specific CAB files found in the install folder.
and
Instructions
Click the Download button on this page to start the download, or choose a different language from the drop-down list and click Change.
Do one of the following:
To start the installation immediately, click Open or Run this program from its current location.
To copy the download to your computer for installation at a later time, click Save or Save this program to disk.

Thanks guys,
sorted, using the .cab (couldn't work out how to do it with Activesync).
Can't install :-(
Nooo! I have a problem...
I had some trouble with .NET CF 3.5, and then I wanted to reinstall it, but when I uninstalled it, and then tried to install it again, it didn't work.
It doesn't work through ActiveSync AND the cab. Do anyone know whats wrong here, or do I need to start a new thread?
Is your ActiveSyns up to date? And did you download the file from the mircosoftsite? I reïnstalled the file yesterday..

My ActiveSync is okay, and the cab is from the microsoft site...
EDIT:I think something is wrong with my phone, but I don't want to do a Hard reset.
Installed no problem if you use your PC to get the CAB just pop in onto the memory card, bung it in your phone and using file explorer locate file and install onto your device. Easeeee
Even easier would be to use PIE and visit this site/thread and follow the link to download directly onto phone then do above in File Explorer
