i use google maps a lot. In my previous device (Touch HD), using same SIM, I can find my location without GPS on, but generally, on the TP2 I cannot find my location without using GPS. I am on TMOB.
Anyone have a solution?
You got location fixes without GPS? As far as I know you have to have SOME form of GPS (be it GPS, aGPS, or quickGPS) to get a geographical position...
Quick search would have got you here:

The location feature doesn't work on 3G for some reason, just GPRS & EDGE.
can you pls check the link
ha did i really link back to this thread? ouch, sorry. i was doing quite a few things when i replied.

Why is it that you need a gps reciever to use with an XDA/XDA II? Is AGPS (AGPS triangulates position from the towers) not available for GSM?
There are 2 resons for not wanting to rely on gsm network tower info:
1. The info (cell broadcast) is not sent with every network
2. Its not close that precise as true gps
There is a swiss site that has made an application that uses network info for positioning.
Cant remember the name though
Some infos...
AGPS is called asissted gps, which means the GPS receiver ( which is still a piece of hardware, which is not included in current phones ) uses GSM location information to find it's poistion, this makes the GPS receiver "lighter" and faster.
This service will cost money, as the provider will not give the information for free.
GSM location info based on triangulation is something different, and indeed not very reliable.
Alex
Thanks
I was just curious. If you can remember the name of the swiss site that would be fantastic. I have the sense of direction similar to a cockroach with no head, so if it were to be accurate within 1/2 mile, that would be good enough for me. I don't need it soo bad that I have to buy a GPS, but if it were available by just installing some software, well that would be a different story. Anyway, thanks soo much again!
Found the site in my history:
http://gknavigation.de
(sorry: not swiss, it is in german . . .)
Look under 'Navig. Software'in the menu at the right side
a-gps default value
If any affects are known with changing the default value of agps in build.prop.superuser please let me know and also exactly what is the change doing to the hardware is there any benefit or should i stick with the default value of 2
manual agps config
Hi everyone
I'm new and a bit lost and overwhelmed being new to android.
I recently bought a Malata Zpad T6 with GPS and 3G running a Malata ROM of 2.2.
I'm having a few issues with the GPS. It works. I've used the GPS status app which picks up loads of satellites but Google maps is way off. (I live in northern Ireland and it shows my location as somewhere in the north sea.)
When I press the locate button with GPS module off/on Google maps says my location is unavailable.
Could someone give me some help please? Or guidance to sources that will help me.
I have a Orange UK sim in the pad so I'd like to use AGPS. Can I manually configure this? I'd read about the GPS.config file. Does anyone know if this can be manually set up?
Finally, sorry if I posted this in the wrong place. I've been searching xda for days trying to find a solution.
I'm using a
I found some info about the TP2 and the TD2 that's confusing.
On htc's specification page of the TP2 and the TD2 it says that GPS is: Internal GPS antenna.
On Gsmarena.com it says:
TP2 GPS = Yes
TD2 GPS = Yes, with A-GPS support
Which gps device will the TP2 and TD2 have?
I've heard that some have had problems with the A-gps dropping satsync and that disabling the "A" solved this.
I previously had a Xperia which I got refunded because of the constant cracking backside.
The Xperia (A-gps) had a gps lag that wasn't fun at all.
When I compared the Xperia to my Mio P550 the xperia had a lag of roughly 30meters while the P550 had <5meters.
The P550 does not have an A-gps.
Which is better to have? Gps or A-gps?
Though it's not on the official sight, I could have sworn I saw somewhere it was AGPS. My understanding is that AGPS > GPS because it's using cell towers to assist it when satilite signal is low like in buildings and downtown areas.

Htc lists the original touch diamond gps as a-gps, But on the original touch pro it's listed as Internal GPS antenna.
Is it only a typo? or do the original TD and TP have different gps devices installed?
As far as I remember AGPS is Assisted GPS that should start quicker as it is being assisted by phone network it self - it will know qucker the position you are in

You are absolutely right about how the Agps works, but I already knew that
The question is wether the TD2 and TP2 are going to be equipped with Agps or not.
I remember the discussions when the mogul came out. The specs said the chips had agps in them. When ever the topic came up about if sprint would expose it to programs or if it could be hacked someone would come in and say,in their obnoxious condescending tone "The mogul **ONLY** has agps, not real gps so the answer to your question is the same as the last 100 times it was asked,NEVER!!!!"
Then sprint activated GPS for us.
AGPS is a superset of GPS btw,it has everything that a vanilla GPS chip has plus the ability to get information from the towers as well. So GPS is defiantly "better". As far as I know all the qualcomm chipsets have agps.

I had a Xperia that has the same qualcomm chip. It had a gps lag that was very annoying. HTC have used different ways of writing gps or agps in their specs on phones that have the qualcomm chip. That's why I asked this Q in the first place. But I don't think the gpslag is hardware related, it's more an issue of poor gps drivers.
As far as I know one can disable Assisted GPS in the register. You then keep GPS ...... so why should a phone with AGPS be worse then one with GPS. Again i believe when you disable the assisted part you keep the GPS
http://mobilitysite.com/2008/02/assisted-gps-2/
So in theory an AGPS system could be better. The only problem is that some software does not like the assisted part. I did disable ASSISTED gps in my registry and use the normal GPS with satisfaction in my Tytn 2.

Why did HTC use different names for the same chip? explain that instead.
the gps is not a spc chip it's in the qualcomm cpu along with 3g and wifi
will the touch pro be like the iphone, where you can go into maps and it will be of no additional cost other than the data plan, or will you have to subscribe to a gps data plan? anyone know or think they know?

I don't get you. GPS costs nothing. Only internet and making calls, for that you have to get dataplan. No other costs.

He probably was referring to some sort of maps/directions database subscription. I can't think of the name of any of them right now, but it's pretty common to get charged $10+ a month for stuff like that.
I assume the TP2's will work with Google Maps and you won't be required to subscribe to any database to get decent use out of the positional information the antenna provides.

Hi guys,
Previous Kaiser owner here upgraded to Rhodium recently.
I'm asking HTC the same question as well, does Rhodium support AGPS or not. I'm quite sure it does - though I don't have a answer from them yet.
Check this link out from HTC support site - http://www.htc.com/sea/faqs.aspx?p_id=250&cat=266&id=92408
The touch pro 2 has agps but it disabled by default you have to enable it using advanced config 3.3 then it works very well cutting time to sync from 60 seconds to 15 seconds when opening google maps.

Hi
I had the same thing. You can leave it outside in clear daylight for about 15 min as this is sometimes how long it takes to pick up the GPS after a ROM change. Also ensure that you have done the QuickGPS download beforehand.
In my case my phone was faulty from the start but after they replaced it it still took a while before it picked up the first time.

You could try HTC GPS Tool (attached). First, make sure there's nothing blocking your view from the sky; it's best to be outdoors. When you open it up, on the top-left there's a button "Open Port." Press that. Then press Menu > Satellite. This will now show you satellites near you (red). When they turn white (it might take a while), you know you are attracting a satellite. Now, without closing HTC GPS Tool, open Google Maps and hit Menu > Use GPS. It should now get your location.
I had the same issue after recently upgrading my 'stock' T-Mobile (US) TP2 to WM6.5. For me, this was resolved after a radio update. Am currently using 4.49.25.57.
check out the aGPS cab in my signature, really speeds up the lock time dramaticly, highly recommended.
Thanks for all your help! Thankyou!

Did you come right?
it seems get better but it need some more time to test!
I have a TP2 (unlocked European version, WM 6.5) and I have no problems getting a GPS signal. I always use the Quick GPS application before powering up my GPS software but when that's done I have GPS signal lock and location lock within 2-4 seconds, whether I'm using CoPilot Live 7 or Google Maps. I've also tried Navigon MN7, same thingm very fast GPS signal lock and location lock.
However, if I don't use Quick GPS it can take several minutes before I get location lock although it will find GPS signal.
All this is tested several times sitting in a moving car in both clear weather and cloudy weather. Also tested from within my apartment, although near a window.
Thanks for your suggestion but I already use quickGPS and still found the problem.
I flashed a new ROM today and the ROM only came with QuickGPS. I tried that, and I still couldn't get a lock. The only way I did get a lock was by installing the HTC GPS Tool (which I talked about in post 3) and using that app. Once I opened the GPS Com Ports, I got a lock in 20 seconds (indoors). I'm not sure if you tried it yet, but the HTC GPS Tool is really the only way I get satellite locks (with any ROM).
Since my desire updatet to froyo gps doesnt work. I didnt even noticed at begining, but i cant think any other reason why it shouldnt work.
I dont get ANY signal with any apps i am using. On gps test also no signal, zero sattelites. I tried some thing i picked up on other forums (remove batery, wait 30 minuts on clear sky ,etc) but nothing.
Any ideas how can i solve this problem? (other than repair)
try this... go to menu, settings wireless, network, then go to mobile networks, access point names, click on your service provider( the one with the green button by the side of it), like mine is o2 postpay then go right down to the bottom & open APN type, then type in default, supl

SUPL data is where the satellites are, hence it is A-GPS, you phone is told where they are, and works out where it is. Hence the apps fixed the other persons GPS as it finds the satellites. On Froyo for some reason you have to enter that your APN needs to do this, so no they are not having a laugh.
All true what you said ... Agps is needed to find the sats quicker (so quicker fix) and get a better gps "quality" but his gps is completly not working?

Thats the thing no fix at all happens until then, and all the things he did wouldn't show anything different. the phone just shows your location from the masts, and nothing else, and says it is waiting for GPS, so its as if it is not working as you saw too.
I had the exact same thing and a nice person on a forum was telling people what to do, but instead of just throwing it back in their face I did it and actually looked up what it was fixing.

Thanks lee815. Your advice works. I corrected APN setting and my GPS get lock again in 5-10 sec.
Perfect. Thanks for helping.
hey i have a question. can anyone help? i unlocked my TP2 and got the internet to work. now im trying to get the GPS and MMS to work. ive tried everything but to no avail? The TP2 is running on ATT. can anyone help? Please? Pretty Please with Michelle Rodriguez on top?
what program are you using with gps? cant help with mms, i use tom tom and it works great.
well basically i unlocked the phone to run with ATT. it was originally a US Cellular unit. And ive gotten the data to work (finally thanks to you guys.) but i have not gotten to GPS to work. is there a certain COM setting that i need or something? MMS i have not gotten to work either. Im basically trying to set the phone up to work with ATT and im not sure what settings to use for the GPS or the MMS.
You still haven't answered the basic question of what program you are trying to get the GPS working on. Google Maps and Bing typically need no configuration in order to connect to the GPS.
One simple, free troubleshooting app is Visual GPSce (just Google it). Settings for the GPS are COM4 and 4800 baud. The app should quickly start seeing satellites once the GPS settings are entered. Otherwise you have something else going on.
I had a similar problem, and Visual GPSce did the trick for me.
