Best way to play an xvid AVI? - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

So, suppose I want to play an xvid-encoded AVI. Windows Media Player won't play it. I could perhaps install CorePlayer, but would prefer not to have to pay the $30 if I can possibly avoid it. I tried installing TCPMP (version 0.72RC1) but this errors on launch.
Any other suggestions?

My best advice if you're looking for free is to try some of the pre .72rc1 TCPMPs and see if you get lucky. I've used that program for many moons, and assuming it doesn't react badly to the TP2's resolution or something else, I'd like to continue to use it for a while.

Actually... do I want the "PocketPC" or "smartphone" version?
Edit: decided I probably wanted the PocketPC version, and tried installing version 71, 70 and 66. No dice. Earlier versions describe themselves as "unstable" so I'm reluctant to experiment with them.
Any other suggestions? Anybody?

Aha! Discovered a version of TCPMP that runs on the TP2 without erroring:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3275845&postcount=172
You need to go into Options/Settings... and choose the DirectDraw page, then tick the "Use blitting instead of overlay" box.

Thanks , I've bookmarked and downloaded. That's one of the first apps I install on a new download, and it would have been very sad to have to find a new one.

Of course, many people nowadays use CorePlayer which is the improved successor-product to TCPMP - but it isn't free.

It will depend on performance for TCPMP as to whether I seek out a payware app, but CorePlayer's features are mostly things I don't need. I have an HTPC, convert all content to xvid, and that's the stuff I want to watch on my TP2.
Coreplayer does streaming some extra formats and lots of goodies, but none are things I really want at the moment.

cant play mms:// streams with wm6 in wmp

For some reason wmp cant play mms:// streams on my trin.
This is the error i get,
cannont find the file. The file might have been moved, renamed, or deleted. If the file is stored on a server or a removable storage card, the server or storage card might not be available.
It doesnt even try to connect , it just pops up this error right away after pressing ok.
Im using the dopod wm6 rom on my p3600.
Does anyone know if this can be fixed?
Hmm ok mms:// urls do work.
However only when i use an normal url.
If i use an ip address it fails right away and gives that error for some reason.

I bet your MMS settings are off. Have you followed the instructions provided by your provider?
mms:// has nothing to do with multimedia messaging.
Its just a live stream , called Microsoft Media Server protocol.
The problem is that i try to connect to my webcam at home , the url i should connect to is my ip like this: mms://my.ip.number.here:8080
But that doesnt work. (also doesnt work if i dont add the port number.)
It does work if i use this kind of url:
mms://this.plays.fine/bla
So i probably need another program to create the mms stream.

Just curious, I never use mms. Could you post an url that I can test on my P3600?
I'm wondering about this too. I used to watch newsfeeds using what I believe was mms:// streams, though I gotta be honest I am not 100 percent sure of the format, but they all used to play fine in WMP. I would just click the link from a bookmark in Pocket Internet Explorer then it would connect and play in WMP.
Hadn't looked at any for a bit, probably not since I upgraded to WM6.
Just recently I discovered I can no longer play them (as in not on my Trinity, I can play them on my laptop). Here a couple of sample links to try:
http://dynamic.cnn.com/video/meta/live/stream.1.large.asx?nsfg=&CNNid=
mms://msnbc.wmod.llnwd.net/a275/e1/video/100/vh.asf
http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsa/n5ctrl/tvseq/n24/bb/wm/video/heads_bb.asx
Actually, I realize I can;t even get the Windows Media Mobile home page clips to play either.
http://www.windowsmedia.com/mobile/
So I guess I am not just having mms:/ stream probs.
According to the Wikipedia entry (and just cos someone entered into Wikipedia I realize that does not automatically make it true, but that's the link for what it is worth...) it is an outgoing Microsoft format no longer supported in WMP Mobile
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Media_Services
The Windows Mobile entry:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_mobile
...suggests that the only format support in WMP now are .WMA, .WMV, .MP3, and .AVI files.
I am gonna dig around on the Microsoft site to see if I can come up with anything there. Also, I wonder if there is a thrid party player than can handle these? I have tread both Coreplayer and TCPMP and they both return an error sayig they can't handle the codec... which is similar to what WMP says too.
Maybe on of the many gurus on this board could please shed some more light on this one? TIA

did u check coreplayer which plays all of those format? you can find in by using google and do coreplayer v1.1.1 build 1600 you should be able to find it on share download with the code.. I believe this is the last free version they had..not sure though.. I know someone put it on some rom and then got taken off...
Good luck.
Thanks for the helpful feedback. First off, I've got a really basic question for anyone reading. Please would you simply open WMP on your Trinity and click on the little globe that takes you to the Windows Media Mobile website, then see if you can play any clips... I can't. If it is just me then I know I have something screwy going on. Otherwise something more substantial may have changed.
Also, if this Microsoft MMS format is getting a bit out of date maybe people would be kind enough to suggest some other news feeds and stuff which use the players built into our Trinity's as they are now?
Yep, I have Coreplayer, though mine is 1.0.4 not the latest which does seem to be the 1.1 release. It wasn't and isn't free - might be why it got pulled off the ROM mentioned and the site is a bit unconventional as it is mainly geared to selling to OEM manufacturers not retail, so I can't figure out if I can upgrade without paying again. I can say that vers 1.0.4 does not appear to be able to stream any form of Media, though it can play many kinds locally. The description of the slightly newer version suggests it has some streaming but not for any Microsoft formats. Here is the link to the Coreplayer site.
I am sure people already know but just in case Coreplayer is the commercial descendant of free TCPMP which can be downloaded here. The last version was 0.72 and that can't stream the Microsoft MMS type file either.
Both these players are handy and have slightly different features. My version of Coreplayer can play back Apple QuickTimes. While TCPMP can play Flash FLV files using this extra plug-in
I also tried downloading the old WMP 7.1 for Pocket PC from Microsoft here.
I managed to install it but not suprisingly it won't launch. Think I'd better remove it before it really messes up my Trinity!
Oh, I dug around on Microsoft's support site and while it does not explicitly confirm the Wikipedia info, it appears to suggest it by ommision. I can only find references to the MMS format in relation to old products.
Sorry for the long post. Please do let me know if you can access and play clips from Windows Media Mobile. Many thanks.
Maybe its the Rom!
im using mUn 2.00.S.E WM6 and i can play MMS/streams no problem in WMP
Uh oh! Well...OK then! I can stop goofing around with Media players! It is obviously either my ROM version (or just maybe a conflict between the multiple Media players I have installed). I am on the current AX3L ROM. Sounds like I should consider the mUn 2.00.S.E WM6 ROM then!
I guess I could also try the Official Dopod WM6 or hang to see if an HTC 6 ROM does really comes out soon.
Thanks a lot for that. You have saved me any more wasting time on this and I do appreciate it.
EDIT: Please note that I have since identified and solved the problem, details in the post below. It was ABSOLUTELY NOT related to AX3L's ROM. It was an issue which could occur under any ROM. It turned out to be about which programs have been associated with which file types and how Windows Media Player handles things.
SOLVED! - can't play mms:// streams with wm6 in wmp
I have solved my issue with streaming Microsoft MMS:// format files. Happily, it was not a problem with my ROM version.
My first clue came from this post which I found elsewhere.
This suggested that no matter what changes are made to the registry, Windows Media player will still attempt to handle certain types of streaming files - particularly Microsoft MMS:// streams and .asx and .asf media streams.
(Incidentally, to my knowledge, the 3GP streams used by sites like You Tube Mobile do not cause any conflict and do not overlap with this specific Windows Media Player issue).
I discovered that my installation of Coreplayer and TCPMP and very likely my attempts to set them to handle certain files types (like MMS:// streams) had resulted in Windows Media Player mishandling certain file types. In particularly, instead of just directly streaming the MMS:// files it was first downloading a file ending with the extension .WMWebASX or .WBWebASF and then attempting to open that file. This resulted in an apparent codec error.
How I finally fixed it.
First, for all files that can be handled by Windows Media Player, I turned off any conflicting file associations in Coreplayer and TCPMP. Then using the registry editor Total Commander, I went through the HKCU area of the registry and deleted ALL entries named TCPMP.bak... there were LOTS. Fortunately, Total Commander has a find command!
Then I also went through all the entries in the HKCU section of the registry for streaming files that can be handled by Windows Media Player including WMWebASX, WBWebASF, asf, asx (and a quite few others) and made sure they all pointed to \Windows|wmplayer.exe. (Many had gotten set to point to TCPMP's player.exe on my device and this had to be changed).
Finally, in Wiindows Media Player's Network options I set it to use Port 500 for UDP (the best choice of available port may depend on your wireless carrier - try port 80 if all else fails). Without changing this, I got sound but no picture.
BTW in regard to the OP, I belive that DNS and/or firewall issues, probably at the wireless carrier's end can also be a problem for some people. For instance, if your browser requests a file on one port then the file is delivered on a different port the carrier firewall may shut it out as if it were an unsolicited packet. It may also be also worth trying different DNS servers e,g, the OpenDNS servers, or if you use them already and have probs, try going back to your carrier's DNS servers. Definitely it will also be likely be necessary to bypass any proxy server such as ATT's MEdia Net for example.
Hope this info is useful to others.

Absolutely - unless you manage to mess things up like I did! ! I use AX3L's ROM myself. Just love the BIG storage! I admit that I did wonder if it was a ROM issue for a bit, but as I explained it turned out NOT to be ROM related AT ALL. This problem could occur on any ROM. It is about which programs have been associated with which file types.,
It was almost certainly caused by the way I had set the preferences in TCPMP (which I use to play back Flash FLV files). I do have Coreplayer installed too, but the misconfgured registry settings all came from TCPMP.
Sorry for the overlength post above, its probalby so long it might be confusing! I just thought that as quite a few people do use additional Media players it may come up that someone may have a similar prob, so I wanted the solution to be available if they searched the board. I hope my experience might save them time in figuring it out.
Sorry if I left any impression this iis in any way a problem with AX3L's great work. That is absolutely NOT the case in any way. Hope that sets the record straight

Friend, you just need to put the symbles /* at the last part of your address. You will aquire your webcam vedio. Although I know the trick, I can't help myself. Since I flashed Karmba's rom, I can never success to connect to my webcam. I just can watch my webcam vedio through wifi or when it's syn to my PC.
What folder should I copy the files to after I unzip? I am having the same problem as the OP.
Thanks.

ignorant TP2/WM user would like guidance!

since getting my TP2 I haven't really changed any settings - mainly because I'm totally clueless about installing new applications and stuff.
I was just wondering what suggestions people would have for a new TP2 user who wishes to get the most out of his new toy?!
I would like to watch films on it, play games on it and listen to music on it. I have heard that coreplayer is good for watching movies but dunno how to go about installing it?! (thats how useless I am!).
Is there a central resource that i should be going to to find applications that are compatible with the TP2, and does anyone have any suggestions for decent applications that I should install, that are recommended and people feel improve the phone?
Also, from what I can tell, I cant just download and install a theme and pick it from a list on the phone? is this correct?
I'd eventually like to get a decent navigation program and some games installed.
I know this sounds like a pretty random post, but i've been reading some posts on here and am confused by how things are installed, and what a CAB is?!
(I also notice that I cannot get this site to load properly on my phone - it just displays a load of random characters? I am using opera, would IE solve this?)
I have an ipod touch and installing stuff on it via itunes is obviously a breeze, so is it as easy on this phone?
thanks for your time

It's all on the wiki or other posts around here ...
CAB: Install from the phone. Either mail it to yourself and download it from your mobile mail, use your USB-cable or bluetooth it or whatever.
EXE: Install it from the PC with the phone attached in ActiveSync mode.
For all the programs. Sorry, just read. I don't think anyone is going to make a list for you, Then again, everyone has different opinions ...
I can read the xda-site perfectly on my TP2. Same on my TP btw.
CAB is just an extension. Like a word document is: paper.doc
A program for you mobile can be: game.cab
A cab file is always an installation file. running this file, installs something on your pocket pc. So you have to run the file on your pocketpc.
As explained above, .exe extensions are programs ran in windows.
If you have a USB cradle the easiest way is to connect it with your pc and make a connection between those 2. Opening devicecentre (or something similar in some other language) en the connecting your TP2 to you pc will result in a popup asking if you want to set the synchornisation settings. Doing so is creating a link between your phone and your pc that will be remembered. So next time you connect, your pc recognises you mobile phone. When you have done this you have several options in the device center.
To move CAB files to your pocket pc you click on the explorer icon (bar) and it opens up your TP2's storage. After copying the file you execute it from your phone.
For installing .exe files, you also start windows mobile devicecentre and make sure they are connected. Then you run the installer from your pc. at some point the installation on the pc says it's done. Look at your phone and it asks permission to install this particular piece of software.

No there isn't a App store like the Ipod , which means we don't have to suffer itunes \o/
Look around on here in the Rhodium Themes & apps section, also look in the Blackstone, Topaz and Sony Ericsson X1 sections. Most programs that run on those devices will work on the TP2

all these .NETCF frameworks seem to me so incredible incomplete. They offer 3-4 controls and thats it. The funniest is the SDK where you can buy single controls for like $30 each.

Yes, isn't it amazing. How the heck does ms expect me to develop for WM???
I can create the functionallity but it still doesn't look smart. On iPhone there are a lot of useless applications but they look smart.
How will this be in android? Why doesn't MS buy up Resco and release this nice UI for free. This will create a lot of new development.
Yea, I've said this countless times before. WM only needs a decent SDK or at least a nice UI library for VS2008 and some new APIs and it would by far be the best OS.
It wouldn't be hard for MS to do this.
You can make the current controls look and function like touch controls with overrides but its a pain. You can find some good howtos at http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/uiframework.
Hopefully we get better controls with Windows Mobile 7 and the next .net cf. I wonder if we will see it when Visual Studio 2010 is released a few months from now.

Silvermoon is only slow because you are running it inside emulator. Silvermoon is OpenGL control library, and since emulator doesn't support hardware acceleration, you are using software version of OpenGL rendering engine. Try running silvermoon demo on your phone directly (if you have one of the newer phones that support hardware graphic acceleration). It's actually the fastest library available (and one of the most complete).
If you want to target all phones, not only the once with newer chips and OpenGL hardware rendering, try Fluid. It's written by the same guy that wrote Silvermoon, and it's also very nice library with tones of available controls and a very good architecture (so if it's missing control you need, you can always add your own).
Other than those two, there isn't much available that is free/cheap/good on the market.

The reason it might be slow on Omnia II is because you might've copied libGLES_CM.dll to your phone with the rest of the application. libGLES_CM.dll is software renderer for OpenGL. So, again, no hardware acceleration. If you didn't, then it's most likely something wrong with OpenGL drivers on your Omnia.
Here's the video of how Silvermoon supposed to run with hardware acceleration working, I think it was made on Diamond 2.

For a beta product, Silvermoon is one hell of a library!

...netDrg v2 NeoXL Tech1 HD2 Hi-RES Version with the netDrg engine...

Tech1 really likes to give fancy names to his repacks... What on earth is "netDrg engine" (making stuff up are we)?
This "new version" is pretty much a bundle of bimbam69 TCPMP version (which is actually the newest TCPMP version and not just a pack of old components) with a skin (similar to the one from netDrg... but not as pretty IMHO) and a couple of useless dlls (did a benchmark and it's pretty much the same)...
This may have been out of proportion but it's sad to see that bimbam69 (the guy who actually updated TCPMP) gets less credit than the skinners/repackers that release bundles based on his work.

I admit this build isn't as good as he hyped it to be but TCPMP was created in mind to b a shared program which users could update and create plugins and extra features for anyone to include in any build. The only thing he did wrong was not give credit to BIMBAM. Way back when BETAPLAYER came out then when TCPMP came the creators even said they wanted the users to keep the software updated. Everyone eventually uses the most up to date plugins in their build. Its been that way since this great player was created. BIMBAM has done great work that has made the player better but even he knows and probably does not care if people use hia plugins in their build. Its open source, learn about it. Its not like anyone creates any plugin from scratch. They are able to create and build upon TCPMP cause the creators wanted it to be that way.
Dude I was only pissed because the proper credit wasn't given by the pack author (not the thread starter)... I believe Tech1 skimmed netDrg thread and took his as the developer behind the new version.
I'm all for OSS development... And I'd be one of the first giving props here if a plugin was developed/updated but skinning hardly qualifies as development. I just think it's preposterous to announce this as a new player version when in fact it's just a bundle with a different skin and a few useless dlls (even though it's not the poster fault... Tech1 hyped this as being a new and better version in a lot of PPC dedicated forums).
I believe it'd be better if it were released as a skin (in fact I believe a TCPMP skin thread is due... for one there are some at netDrg thread).
is this just for videos or can you use it for converting internet videos

TCPMP has been skinable since around 2005. Almost all 0.71 versions were skinable. Most recently the PHENOM editions were skinable and they are over 2 years old. BIMBAM did not create the skin plugin the creaters did. Actually I know for a fact that the interface.plg in this build is an old plugin and not the one from BIMBAMs build.
so, basically this "version" is COOL because someone found reason to add magical(BS) word(HD2) lol?
you know what, that is funny;/
(-yea, i have BEST PHONE, said HD2 user
- mhmmm, fu. said PDA user).
now, let's wait for big sig named: DONATE.
that topic is clear offence for bimbam69, author of current tcpmp line, imho. and i agree with frmariam who pointed whole thing.
@pupakota
Thanks! As usual you are the (angry) voice of reason... one of the few left in this bleak HTC era...
@Porkenhimer
Actually you are wrong. Yes 0.71 had some skinnable builds and yes Phenom was able to find one of these (the 0.71g... he didn't develop it... he did some fancy Mortscripting though). But part of the skin components was always stripped from the official source releases (though a lot remained). bimbam69 implemented the missing part (I believe he coded it himself).
This is not a 0.71 build... it's one of bimbam releases (and not even the latest one). Notice the browser may still have the small items and old icons but the browser shows flv files (Phenom had to bundle his pack with 2 TCPMP versions because 0.71 didn't) and it has the same subtitle function built into the core components.
BIMBAM is THe Man
Sorry for all the fuzzzing... Im new here and playing around some weeks now on this and several other sites. I found this cab on hd2 forum and mobileunderground..And for me it works very good, no lags. I just wanna share this great peace of software with people who need a great player on their leo. If the maker or developer is BimBam all the credit go's to him...
Ps Hope leo will live forever. Keep up the good works guys and thanks a lot for everything.
Don't worry you didn't do anything wrong I was just dotting the "I". I was mostly pissed with Tech1.
anyone tried benchmarking this version???? compared to older builds????

I am sorry for form of my previous post..
I shouldn't drink and driv.. write, sometimes..
You guys seem to know whats going on/ what you guys are talking about.
I wanted to know whats the best TCPMP version out there for HD2, ive done my search and dont have a any thing conclusive,
Also can someone please tell me is there is there any hope for fluid MKV playback on HD2.
my avi's and mp4's of same resolution and bitrate as my MKVs play fluidly but my MKVs always stutter.
Please let me know if there's a patch or TCPMP or even Core player version that can handle MKVs with stutter.
Thank you
Upnp
Is there a UpNp-plugin or something like that for TCPMP? Or is it something i can make on my own?
Though this is kind of an old thread I'd like to point at the fact that the V2 version of netDrg's TCPMP had an unpleasant bug: Skipping back to the previous song actually skipped forward to the next song. NetDrg fixed this in his V2.1 version. This NeoXL version of netDrg's TCPMP was based on V2 so it too has the skip forward bug.

[q] at&t tilt2 lite rom with no sense

Can someone direct me to a nice lite fast rom for the above device. I'm looking for something superlite.
Yes, I have search and most roms, even though they say they are lite, they have a bunch of stuff in them plus, i hate htc message client.
Thank you so much.
if you do not like sense, then use one of the titanium rom. Energy titanium is pretty nice. He updates them pretty rapidly and the rom is quite stable.
I've tried NRGZ28 Titanium rom but still has a lot of stuff that i dont use. like games and other things.
I need something superlite.
N E 1????
If you wait till this weekend, I will finish one, I'm tired of Sense too (too slow)/TF3D (buggy on WM6.5.5/6.5.3). I hope you like WM6.5.3 builds, because I'm not moving out of that!
(build 21680, only some core apps pre-installed and drivers and audio/video codecs.)
I will hopefully unlock the gestures and media control on lockscreen, as has LG Fathom. It is there, I edited registry as needed but still doesn't work, gotta keep searching...

That sounds GREAT! I never got around to cooking up a Foundation 6.5.3 and I never seem to have the time lately.
Will you be leaving the Windows Media DRM packages in? I know a lot of cooks take it out, but removing it breaks Amazon unbox.
I have to smile...
Every time I read the title of this thread.
Thank you in advance

NRGZ28 has made a very lite ROM used mainly for booting into Android. You might like it. It boots very quickly and has VERY little on it. If you go to the Energy ROM thread, it is listed in the download link to MaxSense, Sense 2.1, and Titanium. He doesn't have it listed on the thread, but it is in the same repository as the aforementioned ROMs on Hotfile.
The file name is Energy.RHODIUM.21889.Android(ULTRA LITE ROM)_28.Jan.2010.rar. Happy flashing.

I thought this was a joke until I read a bit.
+1 to the title.
My ROM is combining graphics from the latest TF3D-based ROM, with CHome (default plugins, no specialities), including the basiest software (Office, Adobe reader, drivers, Album, internet sharing, calculator, audiobooster, fm radio, myphone, BING and some small core applications needed for these), where you have about 340MB ROM after first boot free! (I'm not saying RAM, because I'm still playing with it a bit).
Anyway, today I made one huge step forward, I finally enabled the lockscreen WMP controls, like on the 1:32 here on LG Fathom video review.

Sounds good, keep up the good work. Pls dont include htc message client and if you put in auto net confi, I'm sure its going to be a great Rom.
Thank you so much for your hard work.
