Prepping for GPS/Rev A ...

Well, it's March and that means that the Vogue is going to get GPS and Rev A soon! What are you guys doing to prep?
I'm trying to compare GPS software, seeing which one is the best out right now, so far TomTom 6 seems to be the top dog... Does anyone have any GPS advice?

I personally like iGuidance v4. The maps for my area were more complete than TomTom, plus it actually has voice street names instead of "turn right in 1 mile". Just wish it could get traffic updates.

IGuidance 4 for 3 reasons
TTS - Text To Speech (It can read street names, TomTom cannot)
NAVTEQ maps can tell you which side of the road your destination is on (this great for at night, TomTom cannot).
IGuidance does not lock you to your phone. Hard reset, get annother phone just install the cab and your up.
TomTom does have a nice user interface but the features above are important to me.

I was looking at a bunch of gps software recently (in anticipation of the aforementioned update) and found a few notable ones. Theres a nice roundup site by this sir Dale DePriest here http://www.gpsinformation.org/dale/PocketPC/wince.htm I think is worth mentioning.
From the ones I've looked at, ALK Copilot 7 and iGo 8 (search igo8 in youtube, and I do believe version 8 is a beta) look the nicest.

thanks guys, pretty nice info... I'm hearing that iGo isn't exactly the most accurate app on the planet, but iGo v8 looks very nice!

I have CoPilot 7 because I had a Q and this was the best Smartphone GPS app out there. It has alot of nice features, but the maps weren't as current as iGuidance v4 (atleast in my area), and there's no TTS for street names (although their tech support says they are working on releasing a patch for that).
CoPilot can get live traffic updates and re-route you. You can also send a link to someone and they can watch you on a map as you drive (this uses the internet on your phone of course).

a little off topic here, but i'm using CoPilot Live 7 and i'd like to know how you activated Traffic updates...did you activate via the web?

I have tom tom on my touch already-just waiting. I'm also waiting for my 4GB mem card cause my current one is full with all the maps

Sorry i was out of touch (no pun intended) for a few days. Did i miss an official anouncement from sprint or HTC about the update to enable GPS ? thanks

That takes us to June, but I've also seen maybe August.

I use tomtom 6 and Navigon 6.2 right now.. as far as interface goes.. Navigon is way way nicer. If you cant wait for the GPS patch just get a bluetooth gps reciever and start trying the programs out now.

my vote goes to iGO, tomtom close second.

i heared it has gps impeded in it but need software to activate it...is the tru? and what to do to activate it ?

My big step is to move absolutely _EVERYTHING_ I setup or install to a cab file that is installable via User Customization. I want to be prepared to have minimal down-time, when the new ROM gets pushed by Sprint/HTC.
Presumably it will include a new Radio, which will probably be most-easily installed by flashing the entire ROM from Sprint/HTC. Then, re-unlocking, loading the stock ROM into a kitchen and dropping in SDSetup so that all my stuff gets installed and configured.
... in the beginning, I'll be fine with Google Maps and/or Microsoft Search and their (presumably) built-in support for the GPS.

The ROM Update you have all been waiting for...
After getting tired of waiting for HTC to make their website work, I did some digging around, and I give you [pause for dramatic effect]....

I know it supports Rev A but I am not POSITIVE about its GPS functionality. I know that the update for the 6800 [released at the same time] does, and since it updated the radio as well as the ROM image, and considering HTC was planning on unlocking the GPS radio in this handset, my ASSUMPTION would be that the GPS is now active - of course, I haven't been able to get it to work yet...

CoPilot 8 out this month

Just to say I bought co pilot 8 (a bargain at £25.95) because TomTom Home still does not support the Touch HD for Map downloads (I tried this week and they refunded) and have no idea when it will. I do not regret it as the maps are up to date and look beautiful, the software works well even though it only came out last week and has lots of facilities including free monthly speed camera updates (although I have a pocketGPS subscription anyway and it picks up these as well so both options are covered) Seems I have saved myself some money compared to waiting for TomTom. I know some users like to go with cracked TomTom Maps but you would not steal a boxed TomTom 7 from a computer shop and that is the same thing. To get application and map for £25.95 there seems no excuse for using illegal apps when the phone it goes on will have cost quite a bit in the first place, owners can,t be that hard up. I bought it last week.
It does have some bugs, postcodes aren't correct in a few places, the street I live in (that's been there for only 160 years) doesnt have house numbers according to the app, that kind of thing, but the overall experience is quite good.

I bought it last week and it looks great. Loads of features but mine crashes when I try to navigate anywhere. re-copied maps and other stuff and re-installed but that seems to be only a temporary fix. Possibly something to do with WM 6.5 as I am running Miri rom version 23017.

Using a pdaviet WM6.5 ROM here with copilot 8 for just over a week. Haven't noticed any crashes.
I use pocketgpsworld safety camera data not the alk-supplied data. Have approximately 10000 extra POIs installed in ten different groups created from my own data.

How and where do you put your own speedcam database ? I want to use my tomtom ov2 in copilot 8 .

CoPilot Central 2 will read in tomtom POIs, if you want the original graphic then you need to convert the bmp file to a png but it seems to work smoothly

Not sure, I assume it was the 32bit version you downloaded. Certainly the 32bit one is the one I use but if you have a 64 bit machine it may be worth trying the 32 bit one if it was the 64 bit version that gave you the error.OItherwise manually delete the copilot directory without uninstalling and try re installing. My Laptop is on XP SP3 and I have not had any issues with copilot central so far.

I test 32 and 34 bits version : nothing works fine , always the same error . I write to copilot web support ...

Best Working SatNav for Desire?

Looking for turn by turn directions to replace my TomTom. It seems the only option is CoPilot Live?
Anyone seen a working version of iGO My way for Android? Used to have on WinMo and was pretty good. Their site shows lots of details but nowhere to buy (search on google for 'android iGO' and it's the first listing - I can't post URL's yet).

Navigon, Sygic are also options you might want to look at.
Currently using Sygic, but it does not have support for nordic characters æøå, so it makes address typing kinda stupid.

Also try NDrive -- I really liked it.

Nice - more choices than I realised! Anyone have 1st hand experience of them in the UK, i.e. are the post codes up to date?

I've played with CoPilot and NDrive -- both worked fine and I found postcodes that I needed. However, I only made one or two trips with each app.

....with GPRS Traffic updates?
Is it only Copilot that supports traffic updates over GPRS?
I find these absolutely necessary in the UK, though Copilot 7 on my THD handles rerouting very poorly indeed and puts me off the software. Is it improved in Copilot 8?

I have Sygic Mobile 10 and Copilot 8 on my Deisre. Both work extremely well. Of the two, I refer Sygic, as the interface is much more TomTom -like, (i.e. virtually identical) and therefore extremely user-friendly.

Try downloading the patched google maps and try out Google Maps Navigation before you actually buy any GPS software.

nubbin, please if you can give some reviews:
- Which one is the fastest for getting satellite lock?
- How about re-routing? Which one is better?
- Is there any GPS lag? The map direction is bit behind the actual situation

I'll review them as soon as I've had a chance to play properly - I only got my phone yesterday afternoon!
I'm just trying the GPS lock - I noticed this morning that it didn't get a fix at all on my drive to work, but from my desk at work it hooks up to GPS satellites almost immediately from "warm". and takes about 20 seconds from cold - much better than my Diamond2, and very quick!
The display is superb, and big enough to look like a dedicated SatNav. I haven't got a car cradle at the moment so I haven't been able to safely assess the accuracy and scrolling speed of the maps, but I imagine with a 1Ghz processor it will be very good. I'll let you know. Personally I prefer Sygic for the user interface.

I have tried almost all of the turn-by-turn navigation soft for Android and ended up with buying a cheap PNA with WinCE and installing iGO on it. iGO for Android still is not official and cannot be bought. If there aren’t very higher requirements (just navigate me from point A to B), almost all of them will do the work. But as soon as you want something specific, you’ll find out no one can match anything more than simple navigation, which Google soon will offer for free everywhere. Probably, I would choose CoPilot if it wasn’t so buggy and if ALK support wasn’t so awful. However, despite the fact I don't test it in a real situation (because of the lack of functionality), Navigon looks as quality made soft and I like its Android integration. It has 30 days trial and at least cost nothing trying it.

When will tom tom release an android version?

Somone mentioned Google Maps but my understanding was that it didn't offer turn by turn directions in the UK? I was thinking that having the maps stored locally on the device would also help reduce amount of data sent over the air but this may be negligible?

I quite like waze, the spoken instructions seem better than google navigation but perhaps that is because google isn't properly supported yet.

There's a patched version somewhere on XDA which allows navigation in the UK/Europe. Search for it, should be in the G1 forum.

iGO on my THD is by far my favourite SatNav despite it not having Traffic Updates in the UK. I asked the question about iGO My way 8 for Android on PocketGPSWorld a few days ago. MaFt was able to provide an answer. Apparently Navngo (which is a Hungarian company) is only providing "white label" Android software to OEMs, thus Samsung can install it on the Galaxy Spica and probably where it's been lifted from to be made available to the community via illegitimate routes. Though there are other methods of getting software sold to Android owners, as proven by Sygic, PGPSW surmise that their chief reason for not making it available is that Google ban apps in Android Market from East European countries.
I wrote to Navngo but typically didn't get a response (I NEVER do!) and I also wrote to HTC about whether in the absence of their SatNav partner, TomTom, on the Android platform they'd consider providing iGO instead. I did get a timely response from them but it was utterly useless ...a stock reply saying they cannot provide support for this third part application ...DUH!! That wasn't the question I asked!!
Anyhow, reading comments about iGO My way 8 on the N1 it seems that, though it runs, the GUI has only been formatted for the Galaxy Spica's 320x480 resolution and so only appears in the top corner. My recollection is that this was the case on the THD too before the theme developers got hold of it and reformatted it. Not too long later Navngo released it for the THD looking exactly the same as the developers work.
...iGO still doesn't have traffic updates in the UK(*) though - and they wouldn't reply to the email I sent them about that either!
*iGO only accepts traffic updates via RDS-TMC (no GPRS) and RDS-TMC in the UK is an encrypted, OEM subscription only service thus it's only available to TomTom owners and OEM fit in-vehicle SatNavs, and isn't received by HTC's on-board FM radios either so requires an external receiver (i.e. RoyalTek). RDS-TMC is free and freely available in Europe. I daren't suggest to HTC that they provide support for it in future - I don't know what response I'll get!!

Had a bit of a drive with the phone stuck in the cup holder. Used Sygic and CoPilot and both worked extremely well. No visible lag to either, and very nice smooth scrolling of the maps. in fact the little blue pointer was spot on even at higher speeds. Clearly the fast CPU in the Desire works well in making the map refresh. The maps are very clear and easy to read. If anything it works better than a dedicated PNA such as a TomTom.
I really need a proper car cradle now. Any ideas, anyone?

Thanks for that info! I really didn’t know that iGO does not support TMC in UK and I was regretting about recent PNA buy, because it has not a TMC receiver. Even I considered changing it for that.
Anyway, I have tried “leaked” version on my current device and since it has 320x480 screen there is not a problem with resolution. But actually I weren’t very impressed from iGO for Android. It requires a huge amount of free internal memory and with Qualcomm 512MHz it was very, very sluggish. In addition this is the “My Way” version, which is not so features rich as 8.3.x.
However, iGO for WinCE/WM remains the best Sat Nav solution in my opinion. It's much better than garmin, tom-tom, navigon, ndrive, sygic and all others, in terms of features, customization, speed, interface, reliability, speed cameras alerts and routing. I'm still hoping that they are going to improve the Android version as well, because I prefer not to carry different devices for every single task

What navigation is the best for Desire HD?
I have IGO8 on my HD2 and i could not ask for a better navigation, i simply LOVE it! tried IGO for Android on my Desire HD, and i almost fell off my chair. WTF is that? not even close to the Windows version
So, what navi is most simular to IGO8 on Desire HD?

but where can i find the map version? and i dont see any speedcams on the map. is it using fresh maps?

I'm afraid I don't know IGO8, so can't compare other apps to it. But when I got my DHD 3 months ago, I tried all the sat nav paid apps available on the market at the time. (This was back when you could try for 24 hours.) I also read all the online reviews I could find.
In the end, for me, the choice boiled down to CoPilot and Navigon MobileNavigator. I preferred Navigon - the display was cleaner and easier to read, and it seemed to calculate better routes. CoPilot had more options, but they were options I didn't really need. CoPilot was also cheaper.
However Navigon didn't work well with my BlueAnt S4 bluetooth handsfree car speakerhone. The voice came out of both the phone and the handsfree at the same time. I wrote to Navigon about it, but they said that they couldn't support all different bluetooth devices. So I went with CoPilot, and I've been reasonably happy with it.
However a few weeks later the developer of an app call CarUI fixed the Navigon bluetooth problem - if you used CarUI to start Navigon, the sound only came out of the handsfree speaker. Don't know why Navigon couldn't do the same thing (unless they have by now).
CoPilot is fine, and I only really use sat nav from time to time, so it's probably a good thing that I chose the cheaper option. But I really did like the look of Navigon, it's work checking out.

I know what you mean - the Adroid version of iGO is awful - jerky and those clunky sounds .
I've just been using HTC's Premium Navigator with downloaded maps. Although it said it would be a 30 day trial it's still going strong at twice that - looks like my licence is good until June!
For my needs, it's smooth and accurate enough.

Does that work okay for UK postcodes now? I tried it in November, but found the postcode search wasn't very good - it only had a partial list of postcodes - my own road wasn't in it.

Very interesting reading, thanks! I was relieved to see people saying similar things to my findings - Navigon comes out well for routes, and Contacts integration (I forgot to mention that above), but the interface could be improved (although I liked that it was clean and uncluttered). I really would have stuck with it if it wasn't for the BlueAnt handsfree problem.
CoPilot's interface is cluttered and it's routes aren't as good. I think they may have added Contacts integration now, I'll check next time I'm using it.
I don't think iGO was available when I was testing. I did try Sygic, but didn't get on well with it, I don't remember the details now. Of course testing for 24 hours isn't very easy, I think I only tested each one on the drive to work and back.
I only use sat nav occasionally, so CoPilot is good enough for me for now, but if Navigon ever fix the bluetooth issue I had with my handsfree, or if I had to rely on it on a daily basis, I'd possibly switch back.
I found TomTom on my iPhone was pretty good - better than my old Garmin satnav. It's a shame TomTom don't make an android app.

But is Q1.2010 the newest maps for navigon? its seems outdated as it not even showing a roundabout and a road that was build over a year ago where i live. my iGO maps, which are 2010.09 is showing this. i have seen Q4.2010 maps for navigon an another forum, but for MN V7.
why is 3.5.3 stuck with outdated maps?
EDIT: Navigon freshmap says Q3, but but my phone says Q1. it still misses that roundabout and that road.

Hi, i'm using Navigon 3.5, gives you traffic and alternative routes. Zip code and Poi's(also grapic) navigation.
As a former Tomtom user i'm quite happy.

CO-Pilot is working fine for me so far. Been around most of europe, never failed on me once. A good buy even though a little expensive.

Getting my DHD soon, but for now I have Co-Pilot on my Streak.
I have always had TomTom on my many Windows Mobile devices, and I loved it. On the move to Android however I had to leave TomTom behind for Co-Pilot which isn't at all as good unfortunately, but it does the job well.
The maps and program for Co-Pilot is widely available for free if you know where to look.

could i ask whats wrong with the google navigation thats free? not in a rude way just wondering the difference and why people dont use it

lets start with the bad things...
- no offline navigation
- unlimited dataplan useful
- no data connection with active phonecalls
- problems (of course) with lost data connection
- not very accurate when you got big crossings/streets with several lanes to take. Other software offer you some kind of assistance what lane to take
good things...
+ free! (except for data costs)
+ nice extras like sat pics
+ very good working with all google search results (POI always up to date/web)
+ traffic information always very accurate (at least in my area Frankfurt/Germany)
why do i use google?
- i got unlimited dataplan
- maps with actual versions are saved to some maps puffer. usually phone calls are not a problem
- coz its free and no matter what I search, I find it on google

My last phone was HTC HD2 with Tomtom it was just perfect!!
But Know i have the Desire Hd the things i need to know!! and i think i what to use the Copilot but is it also for Offline Use ??
And if i download it from internet do i have to look for a some kind of version!!
Same as by the HD2 ??
Ps. why does nobody have screenshort or a tut.movie that would be nice!!

Has anyone used Co Pilot V8 on a WM6.5 TP2
Can anyone recommend it or something else for my TP2. I don't want to use Data roaming GPS (i.e. Google maps).
Frustratingly I have TomTom Navigator 5 on an old Ipaq 2110 and it works well, but I can't install on my TP2 (unless someone has a workaround to install it?)

Search for the latest version of TomTom for the Rhodium. The one I use is ttn7.916.9189__black.cab. It is free to use the program, but not the maps. For that you and Google should become friends. The maps from your older version will not work with the new one.

But wont using Google Maps mean using data?
Annoying that I have Tom Tom 5 but can't install it on TP2 when I have paid for the software/updates etc! I can't really see why they couldn't of allowed this to be installed on newer mobile devices.
I want a solution whereby I have the maps installed on my SD card so that I don't need data and just use GPS-Co pilot seemed a good price compared to others, but I am not going to buy it if it is Cr*p!

I've been using Co Pilot V8 since last October having previously used ttn7.916.9189__black.cab with purchased maps for a year.
I find Co Pilot generally easier to use with clearer maps and simple finger friendly menus. I can also get maps for the US (I travel a couple there every now and then) which are not available with TT. Co Pilot has also been updated (including maps) since I had it - something that never happened with TT. Co Pilot also includes free speed camera POIs which get updated every couple of months.
Co Pilot seems to use a bit less battery than TT.
There are, though, some annoyances with Co Pilot. There is no on screen qwerty keyboard - only abc (not a big issue for TP2 owners). There is no auto volume control (quite annoying). You can only display two 'parameters' on the map at a time e.g. ETA and speed or speed and Distance etc. With TT you can have many more (though they are small and difficult to read at a glance).
Overall I am pleased with Co Pilot. If you have a UK TP2 it should have a trial version of Co Pilot 7 on the official ROM. It will give you some idea of what Co Pilot is like - there are not so many changes in V8.

I've been using CoPilot Live 8 on my Tilt2 (AT&T US version of TP2) for over a year now. Works brilliantly, and there are monthly map updates (at least on this side of the pond).

I find Co Pilot generally easier to use with clearer maps and simple finger friendly menus. I can also get maps for the US (I travel a couple there every now and then) which are not available with TT. Co Pilot has also been updated (including maps) since I had it - something that never happened with TT. Co Pilot also includes free speed camera POIs which get updated every couple of months.
Co Pilot seems to use a bit less battery than TT.
There are, though, some annoyances with Co Pilot. There is no on screen qwerty keyboard - only abc (not a big issue for TP2 owners). There is no auto volume control (quite annoying). You can only display two 'parameters' on the map at a time e.g. ETA and speed or speed and Distance etc. With TT you can have many more (though they are small and difficult to read at a glance).
Overall I am pleased with Co Pilot. If you have a UK TP2 it should have a trial version of Co Pilot 7 on the official ROM. It will give you some idea of what Co Pilot is like - there are not so many changes in V8.

Frustratingly I have TomTom Navigator 5 on an old Ipaq 2110 and it works well, but I can't install on my TP2 (unless someone has a workaround to install it?)

Yes, I have used Co-Pilot on WM6.5 TP2. I found that it worked well. I thought that it was good value for money.
