Heads Up New TMobile TP2 Owners - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Just an FYI, you may want to remove the stylus before removing the back battery cover. I'm sure some of you have heard there are a number of us Rhoduim owners found that out the hard way. It's written in the manual, this should be done before removing the back battery cover. What results from you not doing this is the battery cover get just the slightest little bend on the side the stylus inserts, then it will never fit the same.
I am still skeptical this is the reason why, but it really doesn't matter what I think at this moment. I know myself and a few others had to modify ours to get it to fit like its suppose to and there are others this didn't happen to. So just to let you know, better to be safe than sorry. Fortunately, my seller from overseas is sending me a new one (back battery cover). Hope for the best and enjoy this very cool device.

Thanks for the nice tip.

I'll keep this in mind.

FWIW: It appears the back of the T-Mo USA version is different from the ones that people are reporting problems with...I've taken mine off several times (with stylus in place) and I can't see where the cover tabs would be affected by the stylus...
Additionally, the T-Mo USA manual makes no mention of stylus removal prior to cover removal.

I've taken mine off 2-3 times with the TMO TP2 and have no problems with the stylus being in there.

I agree, I looked and studied where the stylus inserts in the back and I can't see where the stylus would have any effect on the removal of the back battery cover. But my back cover did need some modifying to fit properly again. It has a very slight bend on the side where the stylus inserts (just barely noticeable).
I didn't know it wasn't mentioned in the T-moe's manual. I was just trying to give y'all a heads up. I have never been one to open up the manual first, before taking off the battery door to install the battery. I guess now I know I should.

Been using the device for a month to date, hasn't been an issue for me.
I've only removed my battery cover around 8 times just to show iphone users what their phone can't do.

Just saw the hardware tour video of the T.Mobile Touch Pro2 and the casing design is very different from European/Asian HTC Touch Pro2 version, and from the video, it doesn't look like one needs to remove the stylus before removing the cover on the T.Mobile version.
On my Asian version, the stylus goes through an opening in the middle of the side of the removable back cover (on T.Mobile version, there is no opening), so while it may not be necessary to remove the stylus to take off the cover, it is advisable when replacing the cover to take it out beforehand.
The text in the user manual could have been referring to the European/Asian version, and was ported to T.Mobile without editing.

Yea, I see that now. I just didn't want these guys to have to go through the crap I had to go through with a brand new high dollar device.
Mods you can delete or close this thread if you like.

It's good to discuss these things sometimes. I much prefer the T.Mobile version - it has a better casing design than the European/Asian one, especially with the reset button.

are you joking?
The T-Mobile USA version looks horrid in comparison to the svelt european version.
They even crippled the software with the horrid Touchflo remix.
If I had to have the TP2 in that black USA flavour I simply wouldn't have bought it, especially with the re-assigned keyboard. I do like the idea of a reset button though.

lol take the trolling elsewhere, then take a look what AT&T did to their version.

And if you're about to get your brand new TP2, for goodness sake, DO NOT let the people at the store put the battery in the phone. My back cover is constantly falling off now thanks to an overzealous employee 'helping' me with my phone.

case designs are not just about looks

No, but they should have kept the chrome bezel. It was beautiful!

Soo, when it's damaged, the stylus just inserts and removes very tough at the beginning??? Correct? I haven't taken my stylus out till reading this thread, lol, and this stylus if freakin hard to remove. So, that means the back cover ****ed up my phone? lol, dam.
The T-Mobile employee put in the SIM and battery for me, I never knew about this. Dammit. Gotta take it back I guess. But that is what you guys experience when it's "damaged"? I'm getting this correct?
(And hello guys, I just got it yesterday, I'll be contributing to the community greatly, I think you guys will like me )

Exactly what happened to me. Accept I took off the back battery cover myself and then the battery cover was misaligned and would stay on correctly.

Hmm. Well, the stylus is basically un-removable, unless you got fingernails and you pry it, lol.
I'll be returning it for a new one, I guess. And I'm not letting T-Mo employees touch it this time

Do you think the T-Mo HTC TP2 Back Cover...

Im about to get the T-Mobile HTC Touch Pro2 and if you all have seen it the back is awful, At least in my opinion looks like an old phone look,
I was wondering if you all thought the Battery Cover Door for the EU one will be exact fit as the T-Mobile one,
I want the Silver back then the Mocha i think it is back.
I reviewed it in real life then compared it to videos they look exact to me i wouldnt imagine them changing the actual phone.
If anyone knows that'll be great if they're exact fit before i pay $25 for it.
Silver one:
http://www.msgdigital.com/productdetail.asp?productid=47493&refid=froogle
T-Mobile One:
http://images.intomobile.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/htc-touch-pro2-t-mobile-wing-ii-4.jpg
The mute button looks the same, The usb curve on the bottom though you cant see it is the same,
I dont think the T-Mobile one has 2 mics but thats just a hole, Thanks sorry if been asked.
Gotta go to work thanks for the replies if any knows.
for the life of me, i simply can't figure out why telcos always go and mess around with the handset's default design. in almost every instance they make it worse.
the device looks really cheap an the T3D is an earlier version than the default device
yea I'd like to know this too..for when I buy the device on AT&T. I want it to look as much like the euro version as possible.
anyone know if the euro battery cover would fit on the US-branded units?
Personally I like the backs of the default generic/Euro version and the Verizon versioin (I like the world map they included in the back, what can I say)
And the front I like the most is the Telux one. Unfortunately there's no chance of changing the front I'm guessing
I am not sure where you buy that phone, but the Dutch (The Netherlands) T-Mobile branded HTC TP2 has the original silver cover.
I see the picture you linked, and I agree it is ugly!
(The original TP did not have the nice black diamond back and no LED Flash, but the TP2 seems to be identical besides the T-Mobile logo's and the ROM as the real HTC-TP2)
Just to let yall know ill be ordering the back on Wednesday when i get the Phone, Ill post if it fits or not its only 20 dollars,
I'll personally when i get paid change the front outer border, also they sell the chromish or whatever front faceplate for i think 20 dollars might have to check a few times.
The T-mobile back is just so blah and the square speaker isnt nearly as cool as the round one going all the way down.
Like I said ill post if it fits or not i went to review it at my T-mobile store and i watched video from my G1 and it looks identical on the actual fit of the phone,
Lets hope right? I have seen the Sprint World Map one thats amazing looking but that back wont be out forever.

I like that several US carriers went without chrome (Verizon's rim looks a little like black chrome). I don't really want shiny happy people to relate to me.
But generally speaking, you're right. Carrier's designfu is weaker than HTC's.
Unfortunately the world cover one won't fit on the normal gsm versions. At least I don't think it will as it must make more space for he 3.5mm jack.
The Sprint one looks weird... the brown is just ugly, but the back is an interesting design...
interesting good or interesting bad I haven't decided yet
Yea i forgot i about that, It looks the Exact same on the EU and T-Mobile one but the sprint is differnt from pictures that has been posted,
Reason why im waiting to order the back till wendesday is so i can do a detailed comparasion at home instead of at the malls T-mobile haha
Iv also seen custom Battery Back Covers floating around if any one is interested i think i seen them all on ebay/

Stylus fell out. Twice.

I have now lost both of the stylus(es) that came with the phone. I suppose they come out when I pull the phone out of my case. Anyone else have this problem? I got a universal pouch and the phone was in there pretty snug. Enough so that it would not come out easily.
Now I have no stylus and am afraid to replace it for fear of it happening again. Is this common or am I doing something wrong??
What version of TP2 do you have?
I heard something similar regarding the american versions, as they do not have the magnetic stuff as the original Europe version.

What magnetic stylus? European unbranded WWE version doesnt have a magnetic stylus.
i have a tmo tp2 and unless you have a little bit of finger nail its flipping hard to get the stylus out
none of the TP2s have a magnetic stylus

It's looking to be quite the pain tracking down any quality T-Mobile TP2 accessories and OEM stuff since our version is unique compared to all the others. Things like the stylus, screen protectors, cradles, cases, etc. all need to be designed slightly differently for us and it seems like manufacturers are not very eager to do so at the moment. Hopefully the launching of Sprint and ATT TP2s will spur them on.
Sorry this doesn't answer your question, but know that I share your frustration!
I have no idea why they got rid of the magnetic stylus, which I thought was a fantastic feature. But I do have a trick for keeping them in, I used it on my mogul. Just bend the stylus a bit, it still feels straight in the hand, but it will say in much much better.

Thanks. I got my screen protector (best I have seen yet, guaranteed for life) from "www.clearprotector.com" and its not a regular plastic one. They have to be soaked in water & soap b4 they get put on if this helps at all and the cover I got from here> "http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150365816665&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT" its a little pricey but IMHO its worth it...Tj
My stylus (neither one) was magnetic. One poster says to bend it??? Does it still go in?? I dont quite follow.
Does anyone else have the smae problem I do ? Losing the stylus when pulling out from the case? Any other ideas to keep it in better? Thanks.

If you bend it just a very slight amount, it still goes in fine and even looks straight, it just fits tighter in its cavity. Just put the stylus between your thumbs and push a very slight amount. Then put it back in the phone and see if its more difficult to pull out. If not, pull it back out and push a little harder with your thumbs. Lather, rinse, repeat until satisfied with the fit.

Unless it pulls itself into place when you're close to inserting it, it's not magnetic.. Just friction.

EVO original shell pieces

With the release of the Best Buy exclusive White Evo.... I'm feeling kinda bummed since I just bought mine 2 weeks ago...
Does anybody know where to find original/oem/factory shell pieces, particularly the rear bezel and the battery compartment cover. I want to repaint them white or if possible, the white versions of said pieces.
Also information might be useful to DIYers?

Pretty sure its just a white battery cover on the white ones. Which you will be able to purchase.
its more than just the battery cover.
The white 4G as far as I can tell has 2 different pieces from the original black, consisting of the battery cover and the outer rear bezel. The rubberized matte sections essentially.
The battery cover is one piece, lower frame is second piece, just the shell though, transplanting the wiring, subframes, and kickstand should be relatively easy going by the teardown images on ifixit.
I wonder if you can get the battery cover and the rear half of the phone. The back half is what houses the camera lens as well as the kickstand, so having a replacement would be nice.
I wouldn't mind another battery cover if anyone finds how where to get them. I'm sure Sprint repair stores will eventually get them in, but no idea how long that is going to take.
One to mess up, perhaps put a logo on, or the disc from those low profile car mounts, would be nice to have. They're quick and easy to pop on/off too, and it's only a matter of time before that wears out given that I replace my batteries rather than recharge them in my phone.
Edit:
I emailed HTC, lets see if they respond..
I got a response, here it is:

I just want the exact same OEM Part that came with my EVO phone, the battery cover. Part number 71H03150-XXM. Found them on ebay listed as "OEM Housing"... Might order one or two and try to see how they hold up being sanded and repainted.
I found an OEM battery cover on ebay, but they want $30 for it. A little steep in my opinion.
http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Authentic-O...ultDomain_0&hash=item27b3386a12#ht_500wt_1154
I also found the OEM back chassis and battery cover.
http://cgi.ebay.com/HTC-EVO-4G-OEM-...ccessories&hash=item255bc105c4#ht_1705wt_1137
Doesn't look like it includes a new lens cover, so the lens cover may be built into the camera. That means no replacing it.
In the second listing they illustrate that it's from Samsung, so they are the actual OEM and HTC purchased the parts/phone from them. I wonder if we'll have better luck purchasing from Samsung or an authorized reseller..

Close but the branding is different. No HTC on the back cover and it says "with Google" instead of "Sprint 4G" near the bottom.
No big deal I just wonder if these are real OEM parts or if they are about to get ripped for copyright infringement...

Yeah, the first one says it's OEM and from Samsung, the second just says that it's "HTC EVO Compatible" so it's not OEM, and probably a knockoff. Especially since he's in China. We should start seeing them cheaper soon then.

Notably, I've found a few wholesale retailers for back housings that have the HTC logo on it but no chrome badging, this is perfectly flat however which means to me, an easier painting process.
Personally I don't care
I just dropped my brand new EVO today, ON THE CONCRETE!!!!!!!!
Well, the only portion that took damage externally, to my knowledge in other words, is the front bevel. I really do not like the blemishes so I went ahead and paid for the $55 set. There was a cheaper $40 option but I didn't see that till after purchasing the $55 set. If everything is legit, considering not just getting the parts I want to replace but also some of the tools needed to do the job, $55 was ok with me.
I'll keep you guys updated. Should be here next week or two. We'll see.

haha, I should start looting some of the pieces from my technician buddy's at sprint, all they do is stockpile them, no one would notice if they were missing a few lol. only problem is I couldn't see doing it for less than like 40$-60$, gotta split it 2 ways lol

New Defy Model?

I got a replacement from Amazon because my earlier defy had a random reboot problem. However now I have two phones with me and when I compare them, the newest replacement seems very plasticky. The black model of european seems to be like a bad paint job of white US model coated with a black paint. Also the volume rocker and power buttons make the plastic sound when pressed.
Is this the latest european model that is being released in the market. If yes, then most of you who bought these pieces have a sub-standard quality of this phone. I loved my old phone and the smooth finish with extra smooth buttons.
Any inputs from anyone?
I have a European version which exhibits none of the symptoms you describe.
Got mine at amazon(.fr) two weeks ago to replace my desire (it fell hard on the floor and the glass is now broken).
I see the exact same symptoms you describe: cheap power and volume buttons, and overall very plasticky look and feel. That was kind of a disappointment. Then i have been even more disappointed when i realized i wouldn't be able to flash custom roms - i miss my cyanogen.
Well, this is a kind of cheap android device and it sure feels cheap. Won't buy any another moto device nor would i recommend it, that's for sure. In the meantime i try to get the best out of it.
Your experiences sure are odd. If you had not both specified that you got your phones from Amazon, I would have thought you had used ebay and gotten some shoddy copies of a fine device.
That said, the phone does use a lot of plastic, but that is something that any review will tell you.
And who does not read at least one review before buying a device nowadays?
The same goes for what can be done, ROM-wise. I checked out XDA Developers before I clicked the final 'Purchase' button, so in that regard there were no surprises for me either.
Sure reviews tell you it uses plastic. But whatever you read, unless you experience it for yourself you don't really realize. Concerning the power and volume buttons, i didn't realize it wasn't normal until i read the op.
Beside, one only really reads what seems to matter at the time of the reading: this is a super-resistant device -- put it under water, throw it against the walls, hell, yeah, i'm all in. That's what got me on board, i didn't really thought about roms, and next time i will pay more attention.
So, yes, i'm a bit disapointed, but Android still is a great toy, even with *that* device.

I think you dint read my question quite right. What i opined was that my first defy which I just returned back to amazon was a gem. It has those buttons as soft as rubber and the body build itself was different. I used it for 4months and had to give it back to due some hardware problem. Now the one I got yesterday seems a completely different build. Now those are things that no review will be able to tell you right?. Something I thought I will share with other users. It might be that Motorola just started to produce this kind of cheap builds owing to surge in demand.
That said, no complaints on this one too. But i do miss that classic finish and soft soundless buttons.

Did you get a BT/BF or blue dot device from Amazon.fr?
I was planning on buying a Defy from Amazon but this is bad news...
Why is it so hard to get a decent Defy... First there was the earpiece problem, now this.
I got mine from clevertronic.de in mid November, think it wasn't even out on amazon.de by then.
I also thought that the power and volume button seemed rather cheap looking... and clacking (at the beginning I didn't know where that clacking sound came from, thought something was wrong with the drive or something).
But until now I thought that'd be normal so I didn't complain.
Really odd.
"I tought this was normal until I read this post"
I don't really understand these people complaining about previously-normal (to them) things. It's like when the fear spreads for a pandemic.
I have got a BT33 black european defy, and I repute the build quality excellent even for that price. Sure, it is plastic, but what did you expect from a €300 phone? Brushed aluminium?
Do you think that more expensive phones are all metal builds?
Just look at the Acer Liquid Metal: you can long see it from the pics it won't be nearly the same build quality of the Defy, that it will screak when held in hand. Despite the name, it only comes with a small strip of metal in the back. I also guess the front glass is not even glass, let alone gorilla glass. And that's for €50 more than a Defy.
Anyways mine has no creaking when squeezed in the hand, the back cover paint is soft-touch and well done, the front bezel is well built, glass is perfectly aligned, back cover not bulging, side covers intact, and the volume keys only make a slight click if I shake the phone.
You're all being too picky.
Mine is an all black European model. The buttons are plastic rather than rubber but they don't rattle about or click, and i've never thought of them as being cheap-feeling.
The paint finish on the screws did start to wear off pretty quickly though.
Also have the european black model, from november.
Plastic buttons that rattle slightly, and frontshell dont fit 100% with the backshell. Everything else looks quite expensive.
For around 300€ with the powerful hardware inside its a catch in my opinion.
Sent from my Defy
FWIW, T-MO USA just sent me a replacement Defy. Not the Euro model, of course. But the same high quality of my original and has the BT prefix.
Got mine from telstra aus. It's sweet. I've soaked it in beer and dropped it numerous times. Not a scratch!

What are you referring to with 'Euro model'? Do you mean the version with the white rubber section, as opposed to it being black?
I wasn't aware either was area/continent-specific, as both can be purchased in Europe.
If you are somehow implying that European build quality is less than.. well, the build quality of where-ever you are, I doubt there is any difference.
To strengthen my argument i am going to post snaps of the two variants tonight. Hopefully my wife should not have mailed it off to amazon.

I meant the phone mentioned above with the all black case. Not saying the Europeans don't know how to make good phones since they're most all made in China anyway (I hear there are some made in South America). But the poster was suggesting he had gotten a low quality phone. T-MO in the US only ships the phone with the white case, I believe.
I alos have a European version which exhibits some of the symptoms you describe.

Indeed, they're made in Asia - I would have suggested that as a counter, but seeing your reply, that's not necessary.
Ah, I see. I think some materials had to be different due to this phone being sturdier. Plastic and rubber can be very durable.

Did you get a BT/BF or blue dot device from Amazon.fr?

I'm not sure what you're referring to with BT/BF and "blue dot device", so i guess that's a no: i didn't get such a phone from amazon.

[Q] How to refit battery cover?

How the hell do I fit the battery cover back snuggly?
There seems to be a gap either side however I do it
Any youtube vids?

I've never, ever seen this question posted on XDA before, let alone asking for a youtube video of it.

Well .. I'll admit its a bit fiddly ;-) ... but needing a vid ?
G.
OK I think I have it now. This is the single worse thing about the phone in my view!
Of course I had to pull the battery due to a crash after only 5 days use!
Oddly it said "updating" on reboot .. but didn't!
ummm.... it'll say that every time you turn it on dear
you slide the bottom third of the cover on and snap the rest of it on, making sure the bottom is sitting nicely then snap the rest on
the verizon cover is pretty trashy. it's like the only of bad quality on the phone. seriously like $.50 of materials.
is the original this crappy? we got the cheapo verizon branding hijacked one. it's so sad, the phone doesn't even say google on it.

The GSM version says google on it, but it is made out of the same material
I actually like it, I have never heard a creak on it like I always did on the Incredible and Thunderbolt.

Who cares what it says?
Yes, the cover is thin. Yes it feels like it's barely made out of anything.
But physically, the thing will never snap on you (not talking about the contact points here).
Don't believe me? Bend the thing a few times, all the way back, end to end. Twist it. It "forms" back into proper shape 100 percent of the time. This is why they marketed it as "hyperskin" Now, I'm sure there is a limit to how much it can bend and return to normal, but tell me what other battery door can you do that with other than the GSII and GNex models, and it won't snap on you?
EDIT: I'll also add that, while some of the GSM versions are looking like they have Samsung made builds and won't be supported in the AOSP, the Verizon model has a Google build and WILL be fully supported in AOSP. Ironic that everyone is complaining about a device for not saying "Google" on the battery cover but is actually more "Google" than some of the unlocked, regional versions.
My battery cover had a crushed clip and made the battery cover lift.
Make sure each individual clip around isn't crushed.

+1 This is THE way to do it -- works every time. If you don't get the bottom tight first, the middle will "push out" and you'll have some play.
