Bluetooth PAN internet sharing - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Hi,
I haven't managed to get BT internet sharing working between the TP2 and my laptop. I've been trying to create a BT personal area network that enables internet sharing. Whenever i select the internet sharing option, it claims my laptop doesn't support it.
This is bogus, because i had the same laptop with the same setup working just fine through my old Tytn II. You just enabled internet sharing and away you go! How HTC have managed to mess this up is baffling (and annoying!). Trouble is i need to route my laptop through my phone or it's not very useful.
Is there any way that is known to work?
Thanks for any ideas,

Don't know if this is feasible in your situation, but can't you just use the USB cable and ICS? Tethering through BT would be slower and less reliable than using the cable.

It is easy but I'm not sure if you aware about the new widcomm btooth settings applet. In the 3rd tab, select Networking Manager > Share Internet Connection > Follow On Screen > Done.

I am having the same problems and I have tried the network manager > share internet connection but no luck. what makes my case worse is that i have the Toshiba bluetooth stack. any ideas?

gotta try that with tp2 btw yesterday when i tried to send some files from tp2 to my old hermes (tytn) it didn't work because tp2 claims 'device does not support a suitable service to perform this operation'. however the bt-link between my lap-top and tp2 or tytn works fine and i have used the internet sharing many times with my old tytn
so maby the are some issues with the newer bt? dunno

Eureka! I have manged to get a connection and i am posting this over it. But I tried so many things that I am going to have to delete the connection and start all over again so I can create a step by step guide for anyone that may be intersted. Test enviroment is TP 2 WM 6.1 (obviously) and Toshiba laptop with Toshiba stack running Vista.
You have the same problem as i did if you will get the error msg 'remote device does not support bluetooth PAN' and have a toshiba bluetooth stack. I should be back soon. Wish me luck so I dont mess up everything.

1. Enable BT on TP2 and make device discoverable
2. On laptop right click BT icon --> options --> General --> select PAN networking service
--> yes --> ok.
3. On laptpp right click BT icon --> add new connection --> custom mode --> next --> select your TP2 --> next --> select group ad-hoc network --> next --> next --> finish.
4. On your device --> open ICS --> select bluetooth PAN --> select your PC from list of BT devices --> accept connection on PC.
You should be good to go at this stage cos it works for me. If you dont mind leaving the PAN networking icon on your taskbar then you only need to do step 1 and 4 anytime you want to share your internet connection otherwise it will be step 1, 2 and 4.
Good luck and I hope someone finds this useful. I also hope in the future there will be an easier and more straightforward way to connect. There probably is now but I just dont know it. Half bread they say is better than none. cheers

If the fix from lombardo8 does not work/apply to you - try the following:
1) Setup/ connect an ordinary BT serial port from your PC to the phone.
2) Use the Widcomm BT applet as monx suggested above to setup the rest.
I have found that I cannot initiate any BT activity from my phone to the PC without a connection made from the PC to the phone first - even though the PC and phone both use Broadcomm stacks!
Also my Tytn II worked perfectly with my PC so likely not to be a PC problem.
Hope this helps...

lombardo8 - you are the dude!
this worked! indeed, i too am running the toshiba BT stack. it's the one i found before worked. I had tried creating all sorts of new connections from the PC settings, but the difference you have found is in the BT options/general settings.
Strangely, the "select PAN networking service" box was not checked. i guess this explains why PAN networking wasnt active. however, what is strange is that this must have worked before using my old TyTn II without this setting.
So once this is enabled, it makes a connection fine!
with regard to wire tethering, this is always a handy fallback, but i have found that BT usually worked quite well, once set up and working, additionally you dont need a wire.

For the life of me i cannot get it to work with my work notebook running Win7 and my netbook running Win7 & OSX
It's driving me nuts
Why can't they just leave it simple. Damn Bluetooth 2.1

Is there any chance somebody can have a .cabs to install back the old internet sharing where there is a Bluetooth PAN in the drop down list. I figured that would be alot easier.

I had the same issues with TP2 and a Mac Book Pro. It works perfectly on Windows XP on this machine but not in OSX. I found a solution for OS X though:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4101986

Thanks for the info but now i'm getting the error msg below
"Failed to establish Internet Sharing connection to remote devices as it supports only Network Access Point (NAP) mode"
What does that mean and how do i configure it in OSX?? Appreciate any help with this as i need ISC in OSX.

Well it means that TP2 thinks that your Macbook offers the internet sharing and not the TP2. I get that same message until i kill the blued and tick that mark again. Then it works until next reboot where i have to repeat the sequence again. Which OSX Version and hardware are you using btw?

Seems the new Snow Leopard fixes some issues with bluetooth. I re-paired my TP2 with Snow Leopard and this works like a charm out of the box. No more fiddling with the bluetooth daemon. Let's see if it stays that way

Just disable DHCP on laptop/PC PAN & u r ready to go.

Yes bro. v1.11 will have this feature but still Widcomm stack & bt PAN working 100%

Bluetooth ICS Windows 7 WinMo 6.5
I'd like to chime in here. I've flashed several 6.5 ROMs, but with the 23016 and 23017 sys roms I can't seem to connect bia BT ICS. The USB cable works fine. It seems that my netbook does not acquire an IP address from the TouchPro. I'd sure like to find a fix for this as I use this technology all the time.

@izzyforreal
see my post above. did u disabled dhcp on ur netbook bt pan profile?

Hi monx!
How do you disable DHCP on the PC's BT PAN profile? I'm using Widcomm/Broadcom firmware 2.1.211.299 by the way.
And if I do disable it, how will the PC get an IP address??
Thanks,

I've found the solution here. Not using the "Internet Sharing" application though but a couple of nice hacks. IT ACTUALLY WORKS!!!

ActiveSync via wifi is awsome, but one question remains

I managed to finally figure out how to use activesync without having to use a cradle. So far I haven't had the troubles that I have had when I used the cable and cradle. No more inactive activesync, can't synchronize errors, and having to restart activesync every few hours or so.
I managed to have activesync running for 2 days straight without any problems and restart of any sorts. This leads me to beleive that using wifi with activesync is more stable than using a usb/cradle.
My question is, can I completely abandon the USB/cradle when upgrading ROM, app installs, or anything that has to do with using the cradle and usb cables?
I don't know the answer for certain but I should think so.
What I need to know is how to sync using wifi without it trying to access GPRS instead.
Any ideas?
My 2s is configured to access wifi first (I think the setting is under the wifi config). If wifi isn't available, then it tried to access GPRS. My carrier charges an arm and a leg to use gprs, so I never configure the phone to access my carrier's GPRS. I rely on free public WIFI access and my home WIFI access to do all my internet jobs.
You'll still need the USB for ROM updates; everything else you can do over WiFi or BT.

Hi nomad,
im trying to configure my laptop wifi (peer-to-peer) and 2s. My 2s can connect to laptop wifi but the activesync is not performing connection or no connection at all. appreciate your help.
thanks.
@3waygeek, Thanks as I have not tried update anything since I pay a service to upgrade my things on my PPC. Sprite also does not like to backup via WiFi. I had to connect the PPC to the cradle.
@hoobas, I have WinXp/Sp2 installed. I have not had any problems connecting other than the occasional ActiveSync annoyance when I'm connecting with the USB cable. I'm sorry that I can't help you. I have not experience your problems so I can not give you a diagnosis.
wifi and MS Activsync
hi nomadman
can u let me know how u set up wifi to sync activesync? i have a WLAN at home and cannot see where the option is to use wifi to sync MS Activesync.
I also want to get away from having to use the cradle each time i want to sync . AT present i am doing it using infrared which is ok but like u said wifi must be better.
Also, i have two machines (a laptop and a desktop) in my wifi network. Desktop is hardwired and laptop hangs off wirelessly. How will my xda IIs know which machine to sync with?
cheers

ActiveSync starts automiatically on USB, serial, and Bluetooth connections. You'll have to use the ActiveSync link located on your PPC to connect to the PC via WiFi. This is assuming that ActiveSync does work on both your PPC and desktop. So it's best to connect to ActiveSync at least once via cradle before going ActiveSync via WiFi.
Only install ActiveSync on either your lappy or your deskop, but not on both. One limitation with ActiveSync is that you can not use more than two partnerships without some fiddling around with your PPC and your networked PC.
About Cradle ActiveSync.
Uninstall ActiveSync -> Reboot PC -> Reinstall Active Sync 3.8 and don't touch any thing or open any programs while installation is in progress.
Mine is working like a charm

How did you do it?
I've used the search function but I couldn't find anything about it.
Thanks,

OK, got it to work, too. Very nice
But I had to set my Network Connection from "Internet" to "Work".
Is it possible to use both settings? My Wireless LAN connects also
to the internet, so I won't switch everytime I want to sync or surf.

In the network settings of yr phone, enter the ip address of machine you want to sync with as WINS server. That will tell yr phone which machine it has to connect to. You can set up peak and offpeak timings in the mobile schedule of activsync on ye PDA, so that it can sync every 10 or 15 mins .
Sorry if my question is too noobish. I have read so many articles talking about establishing wifi sync between a wifi enabled PPC and a wifi enabled PC, but havent been able to do yet. Do i have to have another software to enable the connection ?
Can any one please explain slowly and in detail how you could do that, i've been searching for quite a long time but still no result. And 1 more question is that after i can sync through wifi between my O22s and my laptop, does it affect the wifi connection of my laptop and my O22s? A bit silly right but i'm a new user and i'm not in IT field also. Thanks for any suggestion from you guys.
@azeemakhtar,

@ducga,
1. Install ActiveSync 3.8 on your lappy or PC, but not on both.
2. connect to activesync via cradle first.
3. remove unit from the cradle and reset.
4. click on the ActiveSync link on your PPC and tap on the Sync button.
* The above procedure should be able to get activesync working via wifi as long as there isn't a setting problem in your router managment or firewall.
* The above precedure should work if your are able to connect to the interent on your PPC via wifi.

I also have to do the following:
3a. Click Start / settings / connections / Network cards
3b. Select Network Adapters
3c. Change 'My network card connects to' from 'The Internet' change to 'Work'
3d. Close, reset (for luck)
3e. Open ActiveSync on your desktop PC, select File / connection settings / and tick allow Network Ethernet !!
4. Now when you click on the ActiveSync link on your PPC and tap on the Sync button - it won't try to use GPRS to connect and WiFi will be listed as your Work connection.
I always have to change my network card settings back to 'The Internet' before I can browse again.

Go to ActiveSync on your XDA, click tools, options.
It will say "When syncing remotely with a PC Use this PC:"
It should list the network name of the PC you currently have a partnership with. i.e. "TOMSLAPTOP"

How to use the 8525 as a modem through Bluetooth PAN?

Hello,
I did a search and didnt find much, I also checked on Wiki and they explain how to use it as a modem via bluetooth dial up networking. I would like to use the bluetooth PAN feature in Internet Sharing but cant get it to work.
Firstly, I got the bluetooth dongle connected with the Bluetooth PAN. It tells me that they are connected and communicating with each other, the bluetooth software (bluesoleil) even provides me with an ip address, however when I try browsing on my laptop I get the message page cannot be displayed...
Can anyone please shed some light as to why it does not work?
Thanks a lot!
EDIT:
Seems like when the connection is established it gives the windows bluetooth adapter a weird ip address
like: 169.254.6.198
but I checked in network adapters of the 8525 everything is set for ip addresses to be assigned automatically .. strange..
in windows xp its also set to assign the ip address automatically :S
im not sure what else to do..
Launch Internet Sharing on your Hermes & set the PC connection to bleutooth PAN. Now, make sure the Network Connection is set to your correct data connectiion and press connect. It should say "Waiting for connection" Next, connect your PC & Internet Sharing should show "Connected". If you still can't surf then its a bluetooth driver issue on your PC. The built in M$ bluetooth stack (XP SP2 & >)works correctly with bluetooth PAN for sure. YMMV on others. The latest Toshiba BT stack definitely works too (based on pesonal experience).

Internet Sharing (Not a problem with Kavana or Ricky ROM)

Accessing & Using the internet via USB
I have an unlocked HTC S620 & TyTN (Hermes).
When I connect the TyTN to the USB I am able to browse the internet as the phone uses the PC as a gateway automatically.Even if I do not setup a profile for activesync and the software recognises the device as "Guest". I am ceretain that this is the case and not accessing the service via the carrier or WiFi as I have enabled flight mode and been able to use the internet on the TyTN, browsing, using IM+ Mobile Mesenger etc.
I do not find the same functionality with the HTC S620 (T-Mobile Dash). Does anyone know how to get this functionality going?
Usually you always need to make a partnership for internet pass through to work. Strange you don't with the Hermes.

When you say partnership I asume you mean bluetooth.
I Turned on Flight mode and diabled bluetooth on the TyTN, connected it to the PC. Activesync came on and I cancelled setting up a profile so it was registered as guest. I got internet access via the usb cable connected to the PC. The same is not working for the S620.
I guess the distinction between the two is the TyTN is a Pocket PC and the S620 is a smartphone. There are various Ethernet Miniport Cards available for configuration on the TyTN. You find these under Settings>>NetworkCard>>Network Adapters. The one I find that shows up as connected is IEEE 802.11b/g Compatible Wifi Adapter, this I find strange as the device is in flight mode. The S620 does not have all the features and configurable network adapters under settings. Simply put a smartphone will not have all the networking capability of the Pocket PC
Let me know your thoughts please, or if you have another solution.
Here is how I got mine working.
1) Connect phone to pc.
2) Make sure ActiveSync shows connected.
3) Under ActiveSync Window select File->Connection Settings...
4) Change the "This computer is connected to:" setting from "Automatic" to "The Internet".
5) Under you phone go to IE -> Menu -> Tools -> Options -> Connections and make sure "Automatically detect settings" is enabled.
That's it. You should now be able to browse the internet through your pc connection.
Forgot to mention I am using ActiveSync ver 4.5.
Dash Internet Sharing Files on S720
On my HTC S720, there was no Internet Sharing option, even though it is WM6 unit. So after reading lots of threads on here and hofo, found out Blackjack had similar issue, as well as some WM5 devices running AKU 3 or higher.
So I copied intshrui.exe, intshare.dll and intshrui.lnk from Dash WM6 Rom dump, created relevant registry entries as:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\intshruiapp]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\intshruiapp\DefaultIcon]
@="tapres.dll,-14294"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\intshruiapp\SelectIcon]
@="tapres.dll,-14295"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\Rai\:MSINTERNET_SHARING]
"0"="MSINTERNET_SHARING"
"1"="IntShrUI.exe"
"2"=dword:00000001
"3"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\Rai\:MSINTERNET_SHARING\Session]
@=hex:00,db,4d,43,70,b9,c7,01
Then run intshrui.exe and while I can connect via Bluetooth PAN, I couldn't get any IP. I also tried a static IP and that didn't work as well. I investigated a little more, and found another key:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\ConnectionSharing]
"DisabledOnBoot"=dword:00000001
"EnableAddressTranslation"=dword:00000001
"EnableDhcpAllocator"=dword:00000001
"EnableDnsProxy"=dword:00000001
"EnablePacketFiltering"=dword:00000001
"PrivateInterface"=""
"PublicInterface"=""
"SetLastDhcpAddrToIEH"=dword:00000001
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\ConnectionSharing\Driver]
"Dll"="ipnat.dll"
"Flags"=dword:00000002
"Index"=dword:00000000
"Prefix"="NAT"
Then I copied ipnat.dll to s720. Here is the interesting part. If HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\ConnectionSharing exists, intshrui.exe will not connect, it will briefly grey out and come back to disconnected mode. As soon as I delete the key, it will setup USB or BT PAN and wait for connection (left soft key turns to Disconnect). I don't even have to reset the unit while making change to this key. Also, I left the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\ConnectionSharing as empty, and noticed as soon as I run intshrui.exe, it will populate
"PrivateInterface"=""
"PublicInterface"=""
keys under ConnectionSharing key. I also tried to change various reg keys, such as HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\Tcpip\Parms\IpEnableRouter to 1, and
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\State\Connectivity]
"InternetSharing"=dword:00000001
None helped as well.
Am I missing a file or reg key to make this work? I looked on my Dash for various keys/files but didn't see anything useful.

Is there a fix to this?
Can any of you "smarter" Gents or Ladies, look into this.
this is wierd. who is your operator? mine works just fine with the settings i use. maybe we should find out if this problem only exist for certain operators. might also have to do with the network connections on the pc. like i said in another post, i noticed a new network connection appears when you sync the phone, unlike in wm6.0. another thing is i would have problems with activesync everytime i flashed to a new rom without doing a uninstall & reinstall of activesync.

Shouldn't be operator issue. Worked great prior to updating to 6.1. (T-Mobile USA)
What rom are you using?
damn u were quick to respond. i edited my first post. im usin the new v15 rom. and tmobile is my operator.
ediit: i just messed with my settings and went back to how i had them before and now its not letting me do the internet share. hmm... this is not cool
Iv used V14, V8 and V5 and none of them allow my internet sharing to work. V5 worked at first but then stopped.
I really like 6.1 but I NEED that internet sharing
WHAT settings are talking of? that work for you?
INTERNET VIA USB PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!
ok i think the problem may be with activesync. like i said, in my second post edited, i had messed with the advance settings of connections menu, and reverted back and it stopped net sharin via usb. i noticed activesync gave me an error sayin somethin about not being able to fully connect but i was still able to browse my phone, also giving me a constant animation of the activesync icon, saying "connecting" never stopping when a full connection is establish. when i fixed this and the icon stopped turning and said "connected" i tried and it worked.
on a fresh install of the past couple of roms, this is what i did... (from an earlier post of mine)
this is what i did. use the "connection setup" in the accessories folder. choose country & operator. dont think it matters but i also selected "Enable Auto Configuration" under the menu.
in explorer, under "menu/tools/options/connections" Auto.Detect Settings is selected. under "Select Network" choose The Internet.
now go into ur phones "Connection" settings, select "GPRS". in my case, select, "T-Mobile WModem Link", under "Connects to", select The Internet. for other operators, guess look for somethin similar. now u should be able to share via usb.
one thing u might have to do is, delete whatever gprs settings u have now and power off and back on. then do the above.
sorry if this is so messy looking
Can you post the entry "seetings" for "T-Mobile WModem Link"
I manually entered my connections.
So i dont have the modem link

Tethering issues with Mac OS X

Hi,
i am currently trying to tether my tp2 with my mac book. With the xda orbit i had before the tp2 this was no issue at all however i cant seem to get it to work with the tp2. Problem is that the tp2 doesn't seem to advertise its PAN functionality anymore when the devices are paired. So the macbook thinks the tp2 doesn't support PAN. Now when I use the internet sharing app on the tp2, it tries to connect to the macbook and then tells me that the macbook wouldn't support PAN and therefore the connection cannot be shared. On the xda this worked slightly different: the xda would open up a PAN when I started internet sharing. Then i told the macbook to connect to this PAN. So i have a catch-22 here. Any ideas on how I could get this to work?
thank you,
Kork
On a funny sidenote: this worked yesterday for a few minutes. I activated connection sharing on the tp2, and it asked me where to connect to, i selected the macbook, et voila... This was actually even better than on my XDA as I could connect in a single step.
Today i just get the message that the target system (my Macbook) would not support PAN and therefore no connection could be made - which is an outright lie...
Called HTC about it. They were actually clueless and recommended to hard reset the device. Well I got all the time in the world, did a hard reset, no change. This still remains not working. Has anyone a working bluetooth tethering between the TP2 and Mac OS X?
Had a nice talk with Apple Support for half an hour now. We tried the usual stuff, and the guy was very friendly and trying to help me, but the bottom line was "we do not support windows mobile phones, htc has to make it work with a Mac". This came not totally unexpected though. So back to square one, I am not yet giving up. But no tethering is a blocker...
Okay, guys we are getting closer. I digged deeper into the Bluetooth Settings of Mac OS X and found out that the PAN set up is stored in com.apple.Bluetooth.plist in /Library/Preferences on the Mac. With my old XDA paired, i got some Entry in there called PANDevices and the Device-ID of the XDA in that list. The Device-ID of my TP2 was not in there. So i manually added the Device-ID of my TP2 and guess what - Tethering Happyness . Problem is, on any reboot, the setting gets lost. So i am going to write a small script that fixes the plist file. I'm doing a bit of testing as well, to see if this is really the fix, but I'm getting close.
Seems that wasn't it either. It seems that the restart of Mac OS X's bluetooth daemon actually did the trick, the changes in the file were actually pointless. So now I got reproducible behaviour:
1. Restart Computer
- Connection sharing from TP2 to Mac doesn't work.
2. Restart the bluetooth daemon
- sudo killall -HUP blued
3. In bluetooth preferences, click Advanced and tick "Share my internet connection with other bluetooth devices"
4. Start the internet sharing application on the TP2. Now it works. You have to repeat steps 1 to 3 if you reboot your Mac.
Going to give Apple another call, as this clearly looks like some bug on Mac OSX side.
This is exactly why if I get the TP2 I will be keeping my n78 or e71 as a backup phone. With Joiku Spot it makes it so easy to tether. Actually, I wonder if there is a program like Joiku Spot that would do this.
For those who don't know, Joiku Spot makes your phone a wireless hub, and creates a wireless network which your computer can attach, thus using the internet from your phone on your computer. I have a macbook, and with Joiku Spot, i'm getting roughly 1800 download speeds on my mac when i'm tethered.
There is: http://www.joikushop.com/?action=products&mode=productDetails&product_id=265 - > WMWifiRouter.
However, having WiFI + UTMS is going to drain your battery pretty quickly, that's why i use bluetooth all the time, which makes the device last much longer. But i guess the WIFI option would be more compatible with all kinds of OSes...
Yes, but when I am tethering i generally have access to a plug outlet so i have no problem plugging my phone in while i'm using it as a wifi hot spot. I was using my e71 via bluetooth on both OS X and XP and my speeds are doubled with using wifi. bluetooth can only transfer so fast.
Well i use it a lot on train rides where you can consider yourself lucky if you got an outlet for your laptop let alone one for your mobile phone... So bluetooth is the way to go...
You could use a USB charge cable to keep your phone powered off of the laptop battery, while using WMWiFiRouter or any other similar program for your connection.
Although I guess if your trying to have all this done wirelessly, that kind of defeats the purpose.
That would be a good reason! but, TP2 supports usb charging, so that shouldn't be a problem. Then, you can plug your laptop in at work or wherever you're going!
Just read what Tecknik said, so it's about the same!
TP2 tether to macbook pro
Hello, I'm also trying to get my tp tethered to macbook. There is an option under BT in Mac to specify username and a phone number to use BT to connect to a modem, do i need to specify any of this information? OR do I just need to select to "share internet with other BT device" on the mac?

TP2 tether to macbook pro
HI Kork, do you know how to do the same thing but through a USB cable to tether TP to Macbookpro OSX?

I used to be able to tether fine about a week ago but now i'm getting the following msg:
"failed to establish internet sharing connection to remote device as it supports only network access point (nap) mode"
any thoughts? there is a bluetooth pan connection in network settings on my macbook. I've deleted it and recreated with no luck.
and "share my internet connection..." is checked in my device's advanced options from the bluetooth settings on my macbook.

That's the message i get all the time after rebooting. You could try the steps I described above, this usually makes it work for me. Until next reboot, though.

I Tether on all my MacBook/Netbook using WMWiFiRouter all the time.
Just enable Wifi on your Mac and it autodetects some PAN settings -even on the airport card. Give this app a try.
This has known to work on Tiger and Leopard. Never tried it on SnowLeopard though.
Well sounds easy enough. However isn't Wifi eating up your battery like a starving ogre?
Killing BT with Terminal worked great. I have been struggling with this problem for a couple of days now. Nice work. Very much appreciated. I am going to link to this solution from my post. I did not yet verify the failure to function after reboot but I will test that. I'd love to have a script that does this automatically.

WMWiFiRouter eats up way too much battery, faster then the device can charge via USB (and my USB charing isn't working but thats another story)

Thanks, worked just fine.
Is there a way we can create a script to place on the desktop so we can just open up a shortcut that will automatically do this?

BA like Modem GPRS [HELP]

Hi, first of all sorry for my english...
This is my problem: I have a BA Windows Mobile 2003 and I want to use it like a modem for my laptop (using gprs connection).
I read the wiki Blue Angel as USB Modem but something is not working.
My laptop OS is Microsoft Vista. I can see the "HTC USB Modem" in the modem list and the port selected automatically during installation was COM4 and I don't know how to change it if necessary. If I launch the "USB MODEM Dialer" in my laptop i can't see a modem available (Modem: <No USB Modem>).
The BA is connected to the laptop using the USB cradle.
Someone can help me?
Is there a way to connect the laptop using wifi with the BA and use the the gprs connection to reach internet? I tried WMWifiRouter but it is not compatible with Windows Mobile 2003.
Andrea
hello and welcome to the forum, there are several options for you:
- you could try -=HTC Wifi Router=-, which is much better than wmwifirouter, but might not work with wm2003, sorry i can't test that, i use wm6.5
- and that would be the next thing, why not try and use another rom, nobody forces you to use such an outdated OS, try wm5, wm6, wm6.1 or wm6.5, you wouldn't have any problems with incompatible software then.
- or, and that might just be the one you'd pick you make up an ad-hoc wlan connection.
the way to do it is:
1. make sure, your pc has all the drivers needed for wireless lan installed
2. ALL of them, forget windows zero config, when it comes to ad-hoc, install all the nifty little tools, you thought, you could live without, because from now on, you can't anymore.
3. then open the tools and make them the default program for managing wireless communication, so that then, when you take the windows wlan search, it does not search for networks, but says, "some other program is managing wlan, windows can't search for networks" or something similar, then you are right and coming closer.
3.a you might have realized, i can't describe all that in detail. i don't know, your wlan device manufacturer, your native language and many other aspects necessary to describe with more detail.
4. on your pc, go to "network connections" right click your wireless device and go to properties.
5. select TCP/IP v4 and click settings
6. set it on manual and choose the following, from top to bottom:
ip 192.168.1.101
snm 255.255.255.0
gw 192.168.1.1
dns 192.168.1.1
adns 192.168.1.2
7. go to your device and call up start->settings->connections->network cards, go to the 2nd panel, select the tiaxclwlan(or something like that) and set the ip config on manual and use these settings:
ip 192.168.1.1
snm 255.255.255.0
gw 192.168.1.1
dns 192.168.1.1
adns 192.168.1.2
8. having all these things set, you can now start your ad-hoc wlan on your pc, using the manufacturer's tools, which should provide you with an option to set up a new ad-hoc
9. select encryption wep and choose a key according to the regulations of wep keys (13 numbers are just fine i believe)
10. take your BA and start looking for wlans in range, make sure "all networks" is selected, and NOT "just accesspoints"
11. as soon as the network is found, connect and enter the key you picked in 9.
12. as soon as you are connected your gprs connection should be shared with the pc. since i am not an expert when it comes to gprs and i don't have my device with me, because i am at work and just can't re-create the conditions, i had to write this all by heart, maybe there are some inaccuracies, but, as always, there are small things to be determined by intelligent guessing or googling
nice work by the way, making your first post this hard to answer, because you looked up things yourself in before.
with best regards,
Chef_Tony
Post deleted,
double post
Thank you (a lot) for the long answer!
1) -=HTC Wifi Router=- is not working on WM 2003, i already tried before.
2) (try wm5, wm6, wm6.1 or wm6.5): i will do it in the future, but I need a fast solution in one/two days. I will try with wm6.5 after holidays
3) I followed what you suggested (not only the nifty little tools, I don't know what they are and where they are). At the end of all I have the laptop and the BA connected wireless, but I can't open gprs connection on the BA. To do it, i usually opened a web page with IE, but if i do it now, IE will try to find the page using wi-fi connection and not trying to open a gprs connection.
The edit button in the forum is not working, so i write another post:
if i go to "Wireless manager" i can connect to gprs and i can see the gprs button green. Then i go to "Wireless LAN management" or something similar (i don't know because I have an italian OS) and i click on "Wireless lan actived" to connect to the laptop. If I go back to Wireless manager i can see the gprs button becoming red and the wlan button becoming green. And i lose the gprs connection.
that is too bad, as mentioned before i am not an expert on gprs, in fact i never used it before, because it is hellishly expensive but i used the other way around often, connect via ad-hoc wlan to a pc, connected to the internet by lan, i even connected to a wlan router once that was not connected to the network, but another client pc, connected to the internet via lan and connected to the router allowed me to go through the router and then through the pc to the net, that was neat, those things are, where i recalled the ad-hoc informations, who would have guessed the BA was as "smart" as preferring the free and faster connection. there must be a way to force it!
i will continue to think about it and hope more senior members have a look into this and maybe advise you on how to do it (although i have to admit, at this point i believe, before a solution is found, more than one or two days might pass by, which makes upgrading a faster alternative again )
Thank you Tony. Tomorrow i will leave home for holiday, and without solution i will be disconnected from internet for 15 days... but when i'll be back i will try to upgrade the operative system.
If someone will be able to give me a hint for my problem... i remeber you that I will go in holiday tomorrow, not exactly now....
