Worried About Connections - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Hi there,
Only had my Rhodium for a couple of days now, so I'm still getting to grips with the functionality.
One thing that has really worried me today is that five minutes ago I realised my 3G Connection to 'Contract Internet' had racked up over seven hours. I have no push internet pages, nor have I done anything on the phone today other than change my facebook status, I then closed Opera too; so theoretically, no data has been sent/received. Does this mean my phone bill is going to be a gazzilion pounds over because of this lengthy connection, or does a dormant connection to 3G do nothing? Please bare in mind my contract contains 500mb of internet usage.
How do I alter it so that the 3G connection is always connected/disconnected when I physically need it to be. And on top of this, does the TP2 take wifi connections as the dominant connection method if available?
Any explanation/comfort would be great.
Cheers,
Rob

I think that you need to call your account manager and ask her/him about that. In Portugal, I had a 70MB 3G allowance for less that 4 pounds. No time limit, although if I do not had that, they tax me for time and data. Although they say after first access is free, each bit I receive is taxed... The connection is not taxed after first access.

Just a quick update:
I rang Vodafone today and they say it's charged on data usage and not time, so 3G connection is supposed to be on 24/7.

I can confirm that. In business we use Vodafone to connect laptops to internet (PCMCIA or USB). It's charged on data usage and not time. So u can be online 24/7 ...

If you want your data connection to automatically disconnect, you could download Advanced Configuration Tools, and under: Menu > More Settings > Connections. You can specify the connection to 'disconnect after:...'
Just for even more peace of mind

New XDA2s User...Help please

Having just purchased the XDA2s and had a go at operating it today, there are a few querys that i would like answering please.
1) How do you disconnect from the GPRS internet, always seems connected, is this costing me when connected dont want a massive bill ?
2) Is the Spb GPRS Monitor installed on the device or will I need to install it with the disc provided ?
3) Signed up to a Data only tariff 36Mb a month, how much internet usage does this allow for general browsing?
I know they may seem easy questions but been a new user of the XDA I would be very greatful if they could be answered.
Thanking you Bandari
To force a disconnect with GPRS, hold down the End key at the Today screen.
Spb GPRS Monitor is a good program to have, but I have unlimited GPRS for $19.99/month with Cingular here in the US, so I don't care how much I use.
Just happened to check last month's bill and it showed that I downloaded 110MB.
Thanks
How much Data usage do you use to total 110MB, just as a rough estimate (is it a few hours browsing a day)
Disconnecting GPRS
To disconnect hold down the red phone buton for 3 seconds or better still download GB Soft Tweak fron here. http://www.gb-soft.cz/xdaii/product_gprs_tweak_en.htm A disconnect option appears when you tap connections.
Thanks Rick
Will try the download, obviously the XDA has been connected whilst I have been unable to disconnect, will I have been charged for this?
Also cant find the GPRS settings in my programs what are they under, do I need to download them?
A good way to limit the MBs consumption is to not display the images while browsing.
You can stay connected as long as you want, I believe. You will not use much megas just for being connected.
As an example, I use MSN messenger instead of SMS as much as I can. The cost of an SMS is huge compared to the cost of an Instant message of the same amount of characters...
My two cents.
thanks for that
any idea where the Spb GPRS Monitor is on the device, do I have to connect to the USB port and transfer from the disc?
also at present cant make or recieve calls only got the XDA yesterday but, must be connected because Internet is working but no calls, I dial the number then it cuts off after 2-3 seconds?
Any ideas ???????
Not sure what you mean about the GPRS settings. If you haven't yet configured GPRS access then it's START/SETTINGS/CONNECTIONS TAB/CONNECTIONS ICON/MANAGE EXISTING CONNECTIONS/NEW enter a name (any name), select a modem Cellular Line (GPRS), Access Point name is provided by your phone company ("internet" for Vodafone), User Name "web" (again for Vodafone), password "web" (Vodafone) click finish. You can also access connections by tapping the signal strength icon on top left of screen.
Not sure about cost but sounds like you've set your account for a specific ammount of download. You don't in the case anything for being connected - only for downloading pages.
Don't know my left from right - the icon is top right, not left - next to speaker icon.

I called up O2 about this very thing when I got mine. I couldn't get the thing disconnetced from GPRS without turning on Flight Mode! Holding down the red telephone button used to disconnect it but it would immediately come up with the "Connecting" box once again. I had to hit cancel several times before it got the message to stop connecting!
O2 said that the phone can stay connected to GPRS and you will not be charged unless you are transferring data by browsing the web or whatever.

Rogers Customers - Beware ! You Might Also Be Getting Ripped Off !

OMGGGGGGGGGGGGG ! ****, I HATE ROGERS !!!!
352 $ DATA CHARGES ON MY ACCOUNT...!
i swear i'm so ****in pissed at this point...i have the new HTC s621 and all these days the internet i've been using is ROGERS DATA, and i thought it was wi-fi - i always connected to wi-fi....guys, if it does say it's connecting to wi-fi and if it can't connect - it connects to the rogers data network without you knowing :S - that's ****ing ********. CALL ROGERS NOW AND TELL THEM YOU DIDN'T KNOW, YOU WERE UNAWARE, AND YOUR VERY DISAPPOINTED AND FRUSTRATED.A
i swear, you have no idea how pissed off i am...this is a ripoff - all these days i was connecting to free wi-fi points but guess what? that's not "FREE" it's rogers internet all this time :S - atleast some kinda notification or warning would be good. i swear, such a bunch of liars...i spoke to this girl in the data dept. and she said i can't do anything as of now because your bill's not registered yet. she blocked the internet access, though so that in future i don't get charged but they should have warned me before, i had no clue - i was going through the posts when i saw someone post a link about how somone got 1600 $ charges. anyway, i'm gonna call back the moment my bill comes...
rogers is LYING TO THEIR CUSTOMERS, OVERCHARGING CUSTOMERS, MAKING FALSE PROMISES AS WELL AS NOT PROVIDING ANY VITAL INFORMATION...i'm sick and tired of this ********. everything with them is getting messed....guys, please be AWARE if any of you have SMART PHONES OR BLACK BERRY'S - be careful, especially if you have wi-fi, you might want to get rogers data serviced blocked.
p.s: WHY SHOULD ANYONE PAY FOR SOMETHING THEY AREN'T EVEN AWARE OF? honestly speaking, rogers defaulted the GPRS?EDGE option on the s621 so it connects to rogers internet without your permission - that's just WRONG on every level - that's like tresspassing onto someone's property and getting charged for it while you thought your on a public property....seriously, think about it guys - i'm waiting for my bill to come so i can get them to credit me that charge, i ain't paying a penny - otherwise i'll cancel everything with them.
i hope you can get the charges removed if you didnt know you were being charged. the real problem is that you do not know how to use your phone. i have had several versions of the phone you are using, as well as several others that have similar capabilities and i have yet to have this kind of a problem. read your manual and learn what the indicators mean that run accross the top of your screen. it will show you when you are attached to a wifi network and when you are connecting to a wifi network. if you are surfing the net without a wifi network these icons will not be present. there is also a speed difference in downloading info. learn to protect yourself, bro.
i am not pro rogers, either. i spent 55min on the phone with them last night trying to adjust my plan and it should only have been a 15 min conversation. i am aware of how difficult they can be to deal with but the problem you are having is not really their fault
You should familiarize yourself with the device, and how to tell when it's connected to WiFi. For one thing, if it's not WiFi, it's a heck of a lot slower than when it is. For another, your homescreen shows when you're connected to an access point, as does the iconbar up top.
its annoying there is no way to disable gprs and keep the settings stored. most of the time I delete the gprs settings then if i ever want to use it i just add the account in. I'm on vodafone so its simply internet for the ap and web/web user pass. Pretty easy to type in when ever you need to. Basically if you see the 2 arrows where the signal icon usually is, you will be being billed.
I have to agree... I mean you should easily notice the difference between wifi and grps...
i have to admit - i just bought this phone on the weekend and i got a basic data plan ($15CDN) through Rogers for the times I will not have wi-fi access. So I am sitting at work conncted to WiFi (there are 4 valid hotspots in my office ) - I am conncted to one (I know because it says so) HOWEVER, the E is still displayed over the signal strength indicator telling me that EDGE is in use even though I am connected to a Wi-Fi...I am so confused. So I went to the Rogers site to try and check my usage but no joy there as there was no information ... even my phone upgrade charge has not yet appeared...can someone a little more knowledgeable on this unit please confirm whats happening either way? I mean - even if you are connected to WiFi will E appear since technically it is available - however not being used since it should be over-ridden by the availability of WiFi?
You should call Rogers...

Ok if you see the little E logo over the signal that doesn't always mean your using GPRS because if I send a picture message it will stay on all day and night but it doesn't use it.
Easy way to find out is to just go into your comm manager and look for the data transfer... if its "lit up" then it's on, all you have to do is click it to turn it off manually.
Rogers is not to blame, but rather HTC. I have the same issue with my Titan/Mogul on Telus. Even if you shut down your EVDO/EDGE connection through Comm Manager, it will reconnect. There should be an option to set priority to WiFi when a hotspot connection is established, but there isn't and that's an awful feature.
I'm around a WiFi connection most of the time so the solution to this is to delete the wireless profile. Fortunately Telus doesn't require user names and passwords to connect so it's just a matter of having it dial #777 to establish a connection when needed.
Its a shame dude. I have a 200 meg plan so I am covered for data.
BUT I still use a GPRS data tracker to keep an eye on hwo much data I use. A well spent $US7.95 - dont try using a pirated version of these, as the DASH/S620/S621 uses a different .DLL than that is supplied in the pirate version. Just pay the $$ to save some $$
I use this for added assurance:

Spb GPRS Monitor
Spb GPRS Monitor is a complete solution for measuring the amounts of data transfers via your GPRS, CDMA or GSM network connection and calculating network usage costs. Spb GPRS Monitor monitors all data transfers you perform and calculates the cost of your GPRS usage taking into account your service plan details: inclusive data amount, data block size. etc.
# Taskbar icon that shows GPRS connection speed and other indicators
# Pop-up window that shows all GPRS information
# Warning notifications on daily/monthly traffic limits
# Detailed connection usage and cost charts
# Detailed text reports of your connection usage and cost
# Export to CSV for use with Microsoft® Excel and Access
# 440+ pre-defined service plans
# Today plug-in that shows GPRS speed and other statistics
# Skin format interface
Oh man this site is the best. There is a tool in this thread that allows you to toggle your provider's data connection on/off and contrary to HTC's Conn Manager, it keeps it off
Working like a charm on my Mogul !

This is for Pocket PCs. They have a special Smartphone version but that does not run properly on WM5 on my S620: I can not make any changes in the preferences because there is no "OK/done etc" button to press once I've chosen new settings.
Rogers is owned, run and supported by a bunch of idiots. Anyway I got one of those bills once and now everything else than voice is blocked. Goddamned retards!
But since we're in Canada, that's still the best available option.
BTW It took me over a month to get a TyTN from them. They lost packages, orders, didn't know who I was, kept me on the phone for hours and much more. It's not over yet, since we're not sure if we are going to pay the right price.
when i had my treo 680 my friend opened yahoo sports on my pda (auto refreshes) and i didnt know he did that. i never knew internet was open so i didnt bother with it. got a 300$ phone bill cuz for internet. they were nice enough to wave it off. just call them and be really nice and polite. i dont see why they wont do the same for u.
i canceled data on my account so its not possible to anyone to use data on it anymore thank god
Rogers
I got the same problem as you but i did not pay anthing when i told them thats was by mistake and you can disactivate Rogers data dawnload without any problems to be more sure in the future.
I disabled my GPRS on my s621 by going to the connections and changing the settings for that account (I removed the m form internet.com so it says internet.co). This way if I loose my wifi it cant switch to GPRS. If I absolutely need GPRS I just go and change it back. You can test it by stopping wifi and opening IE and trying to connect to a site. You should get an error message.
As for the original post on this thread:
defaulting the grps/edge option on the S621 is like trespassing? I don't think so. You're buying a windows smartphone and the whole point is to use data on the device - why wouldn't they have that option programmed in and turned on? Everyone would complain that they can't use data on a phone that they purchased specifically for that purpose - gimme a break. I know the phone has wifi, but its of course going to have the means to connect to the cell phone network for data usage as well, use your brain a little.
Anyways, I do agree that there should be a better indicator or a pop-up of some sort that comes up when wifi drops out and gprs/edge kicks in - but it should be user beware either way when it comes to data charges.
Easiest and best solution is yeah, delete out the profile or block it from the provider side. It sucks though if you really need to use data on the cell network for an emergency and you have to redo the settings.

lol, it's always funny when people like to blame everyone but themselves for their own ignorance.
Rogers did not program the software, HTC did.
Rogers did NOT tell you not to read your manual did they?
Your phone tells you what type of connection you are using you just need to know how to use your phone.
If you call up Rogers and tell them you thought you were using WiFi and ask NICELY (Don't go off half cocked like you did above) they Will remove the charges.

You were not properly informed of data plans. You should cancel your $15 / 1.5MB data plan and get the $10 / 10MB mobile internet plan instead. Plus you get 33% off of a mobile internet plan, but not a data plan, if you have and value pack (ie, call display & voicemail) so it would actually only be $6.67

Wifi or 3G connection, how to know?

I just learned the hard way that it appers that the Tytn with WM6 does not seem to automatically choose the wifi connection over the 3G data-connection. This is horrible!
I have the 3G data connection set to allways on and I thought when I connected to Wifi that would be the connection the system used, but no, just got a large 3G data-traffic bill.
It's so many things I can't belive that is so wrong with WM6, does the developers use this themselves?? So many things ar very unlogical and non user friendly that I think M$ should fire the people responsible for Windows Mobile.
Is there any hack to force wifi to be used when connected, or at least get some warning that 3G connection is used even though Wifi is activated? Seems crazy that I have to turn phone of to use wifi and not be charged 3G data traffic.
No one in 50 people finds this to be a problem, strange...
There's something called 'Comm Manager', and strangely there is a button for disconnecting the data connection, and by accident it won't reconnect if there's an active wifi connection... I wonder how did you come up whith the idea of soft-reseting your phone to disconnect the data connection..

Hi, man.
I have notice that the metric for the WIfi connection is lower than the one for 3G or GPRS in the routing table.
Thats mean the default route go trought Wifi if this is availabe. The exception are some software that needs the 3G or GPRS connection like PushMail.
For example, if you connect your Wifi and open the PIE or Opera and surf the web, no GPRS/3G data is trasmitted, sure... you can see by yourself.
Live Messenger can works to chat over Wifi, but if detects GPRS 3G connection, use this connection (bad done by M$). Try unconfig the connections and connect to wifi, you will chat over wifi, but the email sync don't work...M$ have done bad choice IMO.
Regards.

Do you think I'm stupid or what? I haven't been softresetting anything.. There is no button for disconnecting data connection in standard Comm Manger. This is not the issue anyhow, issue is how stupid can an OS be that uses an active 3G data connection when there is a wifi connection available at the same time... And if the wifi connection isn't working it notifies the user of that fact and informs it will switch to 3G data connection.
In other words how can the user know what connection is used. Only safe way seem to be to turn phone off in Comm Manager, which I will do forward on.
A logical system like iPhone will connect to wifi when available by itself. And I'm quite sure user is somehow notified of this fact.
There was a button for it in the wm5 comm manager, and after the updated, I didn't notice any difference whith the wm6 one, but there's always the option to change it to the Kaiser's comm manager (just a cab install, nothing hard or threatening). The 10 button comm manger has the 'Data Connection' button and that's a fact, and it looks better too (in my oppinion).
Sorry about the soft resetting thing, I misunderstood it a bit
And about the issue of the 3G connection, there are some countries that don't have city wide open wifi networks (like mine), so the only place I can use it is at home (or some open wifi network on the street but that's quite unreliable). So our operators divised the 3G internet connection plan accordingly whith prepaid MB -s or GB -s. So in my case it realy doesn't matter which do I use. (ohh btw 200 MB costs us around 11 USD and 5 GB is around 28 USD)
In all honesty there are a number of different solutions. Comm Manager, the NoData App, BandSwitch or it cousin program could help you with that. There are tons of third party apps. Worse case scenario just kill the phone and switch to Fly-mode. I mean, dude when you are going to do something with your phone and you are afraid that it might cost you money then research first before using.
Thank God you only used 20megs. Here in Canada that stunt would have cost you almost $1000!!

Well I did test and then checked only to see if I was charged any traffic and I wasn't so I thought it was fine. Apparently the charge is a bit delayed.. Well it's no fortune here, a little more then 1 dollar per MB. Still would be nice to clearly see when wifi and 3G is used, I use wifi at work and at home and don't want to switch phone part off.

The only thing you can do to be sure only Wifi is ised is to select The Work Network in Connections, so no 3G connections to your operator is done....
If some app uses 3G before Wifi, the OS don't notify, how can the OS notify this? The OS have in the route table metric to use Wifi first, 3G after...

Data Connection

I seem to be having some problem with my HSDPA connection on my desire. I'm wih Three UK and I can't tell is it is my network on the phone.
What happened is for some reason it just wont work anywhere I go. For the first few weeks its worked fine and then towards the end of last month they sent me texts saying they would cut my internet off if I carry on using it but I can't see that having anything to do with it as it is a new month.
The phone is rooted and I've flash the new DeFrOsT Rom (2.0a) and it started working again but then when I logged into the Facebook app it stopped working and went to R (also the wholetime I'm connected to a wifi and when I disconnect from wifi I still get the no connection).
I tried uninstalling Facebook and logging out and no luck
I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this or it is happening to them or you know a fix.
I also attached some screenshots of the message I get, I can't actually read the full message as it cuts it off and then when you select it, it just takes you to the homepage.
the R is for roaming
how is the signal strength where you're located?
go into settings -> wireless and networks ->
tell me what roaming settings you have enabled
untick the box to allow data roaming
data roaming will take place when the signal strength is very low and you are therefore using other carrier's networks (this might also incur high data costs!)
Data roaming is disabled and the signal in my area is usually quite good. Also when I go into a city around here or anywhere nothing changes it still sticks on R.
Plus before I started to flash it with roms and rooted it, it would nearly always have HSDPA connection.
so although data roaming is disabled your phone is roaming...
can i ask why it is that 3 told you that they will disable your internet? this seems to be the main problem...
have you tried flashing a different radio?
this will definitely have some change
They sent a text I was reaching/reached my data allowance for the month (so called unlimited =/)
And yeah I've just flashed the new radio that is needed for defrost 2.0a however it did happen before I flashed it.
For some reason it has got proper signal and HSDPA for the time being and as far as I know I did nothing to make it any better.
Got a feeling it will go again but I'll keep you updated.
I'll have to ring three up tomorrow if I can't get it sorted as I'm going on holiday and I'll be screwed with out it,
sounds to me like you have a data cap where if you exceed a certain limit your internet is stopped.
the fact that you are in roaming makes me think that it is a trick so that 3 can charge you large amounts so be careful.
glad the radio update worked for you
let us know if the problem persists
although there's not much we can do unless we know it's been sorted with your provider.
Thanks for the help.
The thing I don't get is the roaming bit as when it says I'm roaming I can make calls and text fine and there is no charge or anything on my bill it just uses normal minutes
honestly it sounds to me like a problem with your provider
does it still say roaming with the new radio?
if it does then phone your provider because they can charge you a large amount for roaming
Three only run a 3G network in the UK. To provide coverage and data connectivity (mainly EDGE) in the areas between their masts they partner with Orange. Your Desire will roam onto the Orange (and possibly now T-Mobile since they merged on Monday) network when it has a weak or no 3G signal. To allow data in these circumstances you must have data when roaming enabled.
There is no additional charge for 3 customers to use data roaming while in the UK. It is part of your monthly bundle. However, please remember to turn data roaming back off when you travel abroad or it'll cost you a fortune!

+1 for the above, roaming is all well and good but of you leave it on when your on holiday youll definately remember it!

Thanks I didn't realise I could use data roaming as when I clicked to enable it it said I may be charged so I didn't bother but now I will as I wont get charged
I was just about to say that the original problem had gone but it's decided to happen again just as I tried to log into ebay and download something from the market. However I think it has started to use data roaming as there is now an R in the signal box but a G next to it where the H would be.
Think I'll be ringing them up today

Using Desire on T-mob abroad?

hi, ill be going to turkey in a few days and i was wondering how to make sure no unwanted charges occur. now it seems t-mob charge the ridicules price of 7.50 per mb, and calls are 1.50 a min or sommin stupid like that.
If i stay in aeroplane mode but keep wifi on, it would be safe right? is there anything else i gota watch out for,
and lastly does anybody know if T-mob offer a unlimited data plan for a month aboard or something, i cant find it on-line or over the phone
Just turn off the 'Data Roaming' option or perhaps even better turn off the 'Mobile Network' option.
I've never heard of a unlimited data plan for abroad use.
You can buy 'aboard boosters' from T-mobile (UK) such as Euro Boosters with so many minutes for a certain cost.
If you really need unlimited data then probably best to use a local SIM card over there (providing you've unlocked your phone of course)
I went to the States last month and just switched off Data Roaming, and Always on data networks. Phone still works, just can't use anything that uses the net.
kool, where do i turn data roming off and always on data networks, also will wifi work without these options
Go to Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks.
Both options are in there (Data Roaming should be at the top, with Always On at the bottom).
Wireless will work fine without either of these options enabled.
I would suggest getting an app like NetCounter so you can keep an eye on what's going in/out - though nothing should be going through the network if both options are disabled.
cheers guys
Hey TurkzZ,
I was in France recently and I must say, TMO were very responsible.
When I arrived in France, they sent me a text advising how much it would cost to make and receive calls and texts and how much per MB data (this was a little confusing, because I couldn't use data anyway unless I bought a booster, see below).
That said, I opted for a weeks data for £5 but it wasn't quite enough and I topped up twice for £1. Should have bought £10 in the first place.
Basically, you can't use data until you pay for it (get redirected to a payment portal if you try and surf for example) and when you use up that booster, you can't use any more data until you get another booster. Pretty hard to get caught out.
All in all, with the boosters and a couple of calls/texts here and there, my bill was over by about £15.
Enjoy the weather in Turkey
BTW, calls in France were £0.35 to make and £0.15 to receive if I remember correctly.
Only thing to watch out is the euro text/call boosters tmob offer you in the text message. I always presumed that they are a one off, but i found out that once you order one through sms, tmob put them on your account as a montly option!! I had to call customer services to have them removed from my account the next month ...
Cheers guys , I'm in turkey now , un checked those 2 options and also selected aeroplane mode, and on WiFi now, what is strange is that I can access YouTube which is blocked here wid the YouTube app, and even.mote interesting , I can download Iplayer programs via myplayer app lol
