Hello together,
I'm searching for the "egg-laying wool-milk-sow" (translated direct from German means "all singing and dancing") GPS BT receiver for my MDA VarioII. It should have the following features:
minimum SiRF-III Chipset
TMC receiver included
long battery durability
Static navigation possible
BT connection
"Navigon" compatible
I want to use it both for traffic navigation and by foot.
Has anyone a good hint?
Has anyone experience with the "GNS 5843"

Mate i use the Holux GPSlim 236. Sirf iii, static nav option, good battery life and its good value. I use it with Tomtom and oziexplorer. Paired with a JASJAM its a great setup.

Sorry, I ment TMC. This means "traffic message channel". Over this channel you can receive the latest traffic news in europe. So you can see the actual traffic on the streets where you want to drive.

And me... my first so called BT GPS device was a pile of crap... but since getting the Holox last year I've been a happy chap sat naving everywhere

I use the Nokia LD-3W which is also available in the T-Mobile shop. I just bought from eBay for half the price.
Apart from TMC it has all the features. And considering the quality of traffic messages in Germany I don't miss the TMC. It works perfectly with MN6, VisualGPSce, GPSTuner and so forth. And it has a removable battery - a fact worth considering...

I have a BTGPS74R (aka Holox BT-321). It uses up to 32 satellites and works well with TomTom 6 on my XDA II. The only annoying aspect is that I have to use the MS BT stack with my Blue Ant BT earpiece and the Broadcom BT stack with TomTom.
One day I might be able to use both simultaneously ... if someone is already doing this, I'd love to know how.

I have used the GNS 5843 and it is very good ,especially for tmc . I used it in combination with Navigon on my trinity P3600. By the way I get more Tmc reports on P3600/ Gns 5843 than on my Navigon Ts7000!!! ........It is even better than my built in Volkswagen Navi!!!
On foot I use my P3600 without Gns 5843 as I do not need the Tmc.

There is. Say, VITO Remote. But Hermes infrared port is really short-ranged (no more than a meter, I recall), so it's of little use.

Some iPaqs have a decent range, heck even wizard has a better range than Hermes. Anyway Hermes' IR is not meant for remote controlling the TV.
Would make an interesting project to see if the ir led could be changed or boosted for a longer range. Would love to use my hermes as remote as well

My Wizard would operate the TV from the couch just fine.
No such luck on the Hermes though. It's IR port is substantially weaker then the Wizard's
the Ipaqs where designed to be used as a remote, a special IR was put in it.
Three is one other option, you can make a sound to IR adapter and "play" the ir signal from a wav file.

SHORT RANGED
I use Novii Remote Deluxe from http://www.novii.tv/pocketpc/ on my TyTN (Hermes) and it works just fine at about 10 meters with my TV, Hi-Fi Sat. decoder etc. etc.
My wife likes to hide the remote when the Game is on, so I use my "TyTN-Multi-Remote" quite often...

ha-ha, No I do not sell anything, though I could do with an extra income... ( wife just LOVES shoes )
Anyway, I think I exaggerated a bit with the 10m (32feet), took the wife's measuring-tape-thingy-for-making-clothes and my couch is about 5m (16feet) from my TV etc.
Sorry about that, but it is still much further than most of the people I talked to said the Hermes can do, most people talked about less than 1m (3feet) I paid the odd $30 which is less than you would pay for a good hardware Universal Remote and you still can't carry it with you like a PocketPC.
My TyTN (Herm200) was bought new May 2007. I flashed the official WM6 ROM 3.54.255.3 from HTC (5.2.1437 build 17944.0.3.1).
The software version for Novii Remote Delux is 4.11 (build 2006.08.21a, IRv27), released in August 2006.
Sorry again for exaggerating, as you get older the percieved distance from one resting place to the next tends to get greater...

Select models of discontinued HP's that included the Nevo remote software were specially designed with CIR that allows them to have better range etc. This is the same type of IR diode in your conventional remote controls. The Hermes has IRDA. Designed for short range transmission.

Many thanks for getting back and supplying the info. I suspect that the hardware that one is using it on also is a factor.
I tried the exact same version of NoviiDeluxe on 2 different devices (so far). One a very cheap no name DVD player and an even cheaper Matsui TV. The maxium range I got from DVD player was ~ 3 metres and the TV barely got to 2 metres.
Anyway, it is much better than often stated. The Novvi software is very good. From their forum there might be a problem on Hermes phones with the pre-built IR codes but there is no problem learning and implementing codes.
novii is nice, but the range kills the fun with stock IR

Don't know but I think it also has a lot to do with the quality of the signal of the original remote,
May be my imagination, but when in IR-learning mode, I got a huge difference in range if I use new batteries and press-and-hold for a few sec. the button on the original remote, instead of just a quick press. It is as if the captured code is just that little bit stronger...
As said, this may or may not help, but give it a go, you never know...

allow me to elaborate on this, my last pda (which i kinda sat on - not as sturdy as a remote apperantly...) was the ipaq rx3715.
there are two type's of ir ports generally for pda's - sir and cir.
confused? its sipmle - Serial Infra Red and Consumer Infra red.
the ipaq had SIR on it because it was part of the "media oriented packege" that RX models sport.
TyTn seems to use CIR, short range in order to communicate with other devices. most devices these days dont even get ir ports these days. i've owned my tytn for a year now and haven't once used it.
you'l get up to three meters max on a CIR usually as far as i know - BUT I COULD BE WRONG!!
maybe it could be done something from the radio rom to increase the radio power of the IR port
A recent teardown by ifixit reveals Evo running Broadcom BCM4329 radio chipset. According to broadcom's official promo page, BCM4329 contains "FM radio receiver and transmitter" capability.
HTC Evo - 1Ghz, 4.3" LCD, WiMax, WiFi a/b/g/n, FM Rx+Tx... I think I'm starting to melt just thinking how much I will enjoy this lil device once I get it on June 4th

i bet you 50 bucks that there will not be any transmitting feature installed.. and i bet you that it will take several months before it will get hacked
There is no transmitting feature. You can only listen to the radio with headphones on.

Well, that much I do know... already been down that road with touch pro's "hardware accelerated graphics". HTC is well known not to utilize chip's full potential, let it be due to licensing or whatever reason there is.
After quick search on google, it seems that N1/Desire/iPodTouch3G/iPad all contain BCM4329, and seeing all the good devs coming over to Evo territory I'm having my fingers crossed that someone unlocks/writes a driver+app for that FM transmitter before this christmas
EDIT: ... given that the FM transmitter part of the chip is actually wired to the board
I've been dealing with various radios on linux with x86/x64 hardware for past 5 years, so I'll give Evo a stab and see what I can do with it

i use a bluetooth speakerphone in my car to transmit to my car stereo... it'd be nice to take the speakerphone out of the picture. stream pandora/last.fm to the clock radio i have at work.
as posted above, I'd love to stream music to external speakers such as car's audio which doesnt have no aux/blutooth capability.
Has there been any progress on the FM transmitter part? where can I get more info? or is it just a dead topic without much glory
Would be great to be able to stream audio to the car!! I may be buying wrong cars, but none of them come with stock radios that have aux inputs or such. FM transmitting was availble on TAPE DECKS at one time to 'stream' audio to the car.
How can we have forgotten this ability for our newest devices??
BCM4329 is an 802.11 chipset... and originally a B/G only one if I remember right. FM just means frequency modulated. Would be a 2.4ghz FM transmitter chip. Cant think of any microwave transmitters that are AM really anyhow. So, nowhere even close to the right frequency range. Most likely the wifi chip.

as we know software wise the evo has no fm Transmiter software installed and like we know Wifi N was in it and turned off till now.
so sometime soon we hope someone will come out with an APK to use the fm transmiter. (to stream our media to fm radios for car or house use.).

We can then look at the circuit board to see it if it has the necessary components to move forward. Of course, I'm saying this because I don't know how easy it is to change the chip config and code the necessary drivers. If the software side is easy, they could just do it and see if it works. I'm not sure that it is though. Are there any other android phones with an FM transmitter? I'd imagine the Nexus One has the same chip. If they haven't gotten it working by now, it probably isn't possible.

I mean not many phones come with built-in FM transmitting. Sound relay with no BT required!

If you look at my post above. you will see the chip is bidirectional for the FM. nothing else needed. hardware wise.
we do need the app to run the fm (like you said its not found in other fones yet)
only reason it may not be possible is cause BC hasnt released the app source code yet.

you may think that but if you knew how htc and many other companies downgrade products by software to profit you wouldnt say that.
the TP and TP2 both had FM radios (both mine worked after many hours)
Neither had fm listed from htc or sprint.
just example my samsung ln46a640 just needed change in sys menu to turn into a 650 with DLNA.
many products are software limited (its cheaper more profitable to limit via software controlles vs hardware. that way they can be making the next gen product and get 2 out of it.
so many products i could spit out that are soft limited and can be opend up(short version)

ya i know like we expect them to do that.
so again lets recap
the chip has standard fm radio both RX and TX biderectionlay. meaning if it works in fm receive mode we can make it work in fm transmit mode. No hardware changes.
We just need the software that will take the music or whtver and feed it into the fm side and speak its lingo to transmit
Erm, might it be a problem that it doesn't appear that the phone itself has any sort of FM antenna built in? I mean, the FM Radio app wont even turn on the radio unless you have headphones plugged in... which would be kind of a problem if you are trying to use the transmitter as an audio sink. Speaking of which, Eclair doesn't seem to have any way to select a default audio sink, it just uses whatever is available that has the highest priority ie: headphones -> bluetooth -> internal speakers. I think I read somewhere that Froyo improves on this functionality, but I'm not sure. I guess you could always just use an app to enable the transmitter, set it to highest priority (if that's even possible,) and then start playing whatever you wanted to be transmitted.

I'm looking to possibly upgrade my BT headset. Ideally I'd looking for something that will work very well for calls, but also will work for music. It MUST have A2DP and AVRCP support.
In an ideal work it would allow me to switch between true mono (both channels together) and just left channel and just right channel. But the important thing would be to have true mono.
Anyone want to make a recommendation?
best one ive found is also the cheapest the good old motorola S9 get them on ebay for 20 odd quid...

Does anyone know if Z Fold 4 has an FM Tuner? like being able to run NextRadio app. I have a Z fold 2 but I know FM tuner chip is not enabled on Fold 2. BTW, I am not interested in getting FM stations using streaming apps like Tune in. I know the FM Tuner chip is on Samsung phones but I am not sure if it is enabled on Z Fold 4 or not.

FM radio tuner in smartphones has been relagated to a relic of the past! I've used iHeartRadio app (free version) for years to stream my favorite radio stations. Great app and many others in the Play Store.
