T-Mobile 8/12 Date Verified. AT&T??? - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Looks like we have a verified date (which pretty much everyone's seen) for T-Mobile Touch Pro 2.
http://htcpedia.com/news/htc-touch-pro-2-coming-august-12th.html
The real question is, where does AT&T fit in here? 2 Weeks after? 1 Month after? 2 Months after? 3 Months after? Never? We've seen all of those times speculated, but no real leads. Get on the ball AT&T; we are waiting!

ATT never announce release date for their phone unless its the iphone...so if its release it we gonna find out the day of or maybe a week ahead if lucky

Well... we've seen photos leaked of all the other US carriers' versions... but not AT&T. If a PICTURE hasn't even been leaked yet, I have to doubt how much AT&T leakage we'll be hearing.
... whoa, that sounded like a problem for a doctor to look at...

I've seen photos...
http://htc-phones.net/att-warhawk-and-fortress-htc-touch-diamond2-and-pro2-comming.html
Why mess with the pretty silver... =/ and the keyboard...again...

These aren't photos, they are concept mock-ups.
Photos refer to actual photos of the device, such as in the wild, like how the T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon versions were first shown.

Well they are photos to me.
Your definition of photos might refer to "in the wild".
I'm pretty sure the device will look exactly like that.
Don't get me wrong, I believe that if we haven't seen any blurry cam/ phone on jeans picture/ in the wild photos the phone isn't coming in the near future.
What I posted is definitively leaked and definitively a photo IMO...
Also if T-Mo's TP2 got to FCC April 1st and got released August 12.
Fortress got to FCC June 5th, and looking at the Fuze release, I wouldn't expect the phone to hit ATT before September/October but this is pure speculation from my part.

I believe the leaked slide contained a render. Although I do not have a link to it, I have seen a very similar render of a TP2 with the red/yellow look and a 5 row keyboard, the exact same as the Euro Unlocked TP2 but with the color change. I don't know if it was supposed to be a more recent render of the At&t version or not (It did not have an At&t logo on it, but the image used on the slide did not either). I believe the image used was probably an early concept presented to At&t and just included in the slide to give an idea of the design.
To summarize, I think the slide image is an old HTC render given to At&t and the actual phone may retain the color scheme, but the keyboard will change and we don't know about a front-facing camera or a 3.5mm audio jack.
Although I am hoping for a mid to late August release, I actually agree that it will probably be closer to your expected September/October.

Ya its kinda weird because last year we saw many leaked photos of the fuze. There were constant rumors, leaked rebate sheets, etc months before the release. It is worrying that we have yet to hear a single word about this device..

"I'm pretty sure the device will look exactly like that."
You expect the letter z on the top row? A simple search would lead to many, many discussions of that particular photo... and you may be less inclined to back it as proof after reading them.

Oh crap,
This statement was misguided. I didn't use this slide as proof either, but with ATT tendency to mess with the keyboard, and to favor a "keypad" on the fuze instead the top row numbers. With the extra space I could see them having this keypad, so I will revise my statement:
I wouln't be surprised if the final design is similar to that.
It's also true that "leakage" and info has been pretty scarce compared to the Fuze, but again the Fuze did come later in November...
All we have for the Fortress is the name, and that it did hit FCC...

heh, easy one to miss - I'm glad you seem to have taken my comment as it was intended (to be on the humorous side, not the condescending side ).

Let's hope they do change the Fortress from these photos.....no 3.5 mm jack on these. Either way, myself and may others are in dyer need of an upgrade. People, don't take the bait and be fooled and hastily jump for the Iphone 3Gs. Let's all wait it out and put the pressure on AT&T to get with it.

I've seen that render (or was it a render? I bet so) too - it pretty much looked exactly like the Euro, just with the color scheme of the previous linked render. Probably just someone's take on what is closer to reality. Can't find a link to it to share with you guys, sorry!
I too am worried about the lack of in the wild photos. I was suspecting that Sprint and Verizon were further off from releasing the TP2 than AT&T was, but maybe I'm wrong.
Personally I don't mind the color scheme of that weird looking render. But I'm pretty much forced to go with AT&T because of institutional discounts... it'd just be way more expensive to go with a different carrier just to get the TP2.

Yeah, the thing is I'm pretty sure the render with the same color scheme was actually released before the At&t slide containing the Fortress was leaked. I think that render was even used in some news outlet's report on HTC making the Touch Pro 2.
Maybe that color scheme is just the first one HTC made and then changed it for all the actual models produced, realizing the colors were kind of crazy for a business phone (the group the phone is marketed to). I don't mind the color either (it reminds me of Iron Man and he is my favorite comic book superhero ). I think we may end up with another slick black model, similar to the Fuze, though.
I just hope they will keep the front-facing camera; I thought At&t was going to start changing the video share service to a video calling service. If they add the 3.5mm jack in that would be cool too.

What is with att? I can remember when they were the first to release the sliding keyboards before the rest. The 8x25's were advance when they were released considiering the offering of t-moble and sprint. There was to official release date and the restocking date. The iphone really crap up the situation. They still release the 8x25's along side during thier command the blackberry market. Windows Moble has yet to crack it even with palm's settling down. The iphone is here to stay and may even change the way we want in a phone. However when it comes to pdas, the iphone will not dominate with it's current OS. Blackberry commands because of bulk corporate sales. The sales of the Tpro duce will not hamper the sales of the iphone. I hope a official picture is leaked soon. August is fast approaching and no news is not good news.

barium=at&t TP2? say it ain't so!

does anybody know or has anyone heard anything about the touch pro 2 on at&t? when i saw HTC's leaked '09 lineup, it said the barium was for at&t, and the barium looks like the TP2. i read on the at&t forum that the barium indeed is the TP2 for at&t. if this is true i really hope it doesnt look the way it did in the leak. i hope it looks just like the TP2 on the htc website. i mean cmon, the barium has a green keyboard! anyway, if anyone knows of any tips or has any info, please reply!

LOL sorry but dont worry I dought that it will have a green keybaord, but if it does... lol
but I think T-mobile messed up the design too but it seems more realistic, but like seriously why do they do tha?t HTC knows what they're doing you don't have to make the design worse to make the phone nique, but oh well I wich t-mobile didnt mess up the back, and also the front doesnt look NEARLY as good either, and in leaked pics they took off the crhome part on the side, like OMG THEY COMPLETELY RUINED THE FRAME but oh well, I guess its not that it looks bad its just that it looks ugly next to the original touch pro 2 but lol i still dont think the [email protected] version will have a green keyboard

man I really hope it doesn't have a green keyboard. I looked at pics of other carriers too, including AT&T. it doesn't even look like the front facing camera is there anymore. and the back doesn't look anything like the HTC branded model. I like the whole grille thing! and the silver back with black front. if carriers wanna make the phones they release unique, they shouldn't change so much of the hardware and the appearance. like you said, HTC's phones are already well-designed. but the carriers mess them up.
and link278, you're lucky! tmobile is the first carrier to announce the TP2 (supposedly) I hope AT&T is next!! I need an upgrade
are u talking about this pic?
I hope they dont do that because this phone is supposed to be targeted towards enterprise (business) and making it green gives it a childish look. regardless, i'd still buy it.

and according to this the front and back wasnt enough they had to mess up the side too:

I loved the original design why do carriers have to mess up the designs?
but like fone_fanatic said I will still get it lol.
but if it had a green keybaord, (which I am pretty sure wont happen) I would stick with my tilt till something better looking came around cause that would look really stuiped and kinda ugly it doesnt make sence to have a black sleek phone and then this dull green keybaord i nthe middle of it, I really like the metallic black and silver, that's my favorite color combo but whatever its not that bad its just disapointing I guess I could live with it. (The t-mobile design not a green keyboard lol)
No US carrier has announced the TP2 except Sprint and they were just internal sheets. Now, someone who leaked a few release dates for T-Mobile seems to be right on par. The HTC maple (July 1) just entered the FCC and seems to match up with was has been expected. The TP2 has yet to show anything at the FCC except a European/Asian model. Why the FCC has stats on a foreign model phone, I don't know but whatever. It seems if July 22nd is the correct date... T-Mobile will be the first to release the TP2 (the first "first" in US carrier history, lol)

What stood out to me on those pics at least was that the front facing camera is still there. However, that may just be a European T-Mobile thing. Still, I'm a little positive about it. That front facing camera could affect my next choice of carrier.
This is one of the reasons I am coming off T-Mobile and going to but the pro2 unbranded. They have to mess with everything and turn everything on your phone pink. I don't even like pink as a colour.
it's not only tmobile that messes around with phones' appearance. all carriers LOVE to make the phones unique, when HTC has already designed them well. I'm gonna buy the phone regardless; I just hope the keyboard isn't some wacked out color like green or pink or whatever.

I know I still want it too, I guess it still looks pretty nice, and alot better than a kaiser, but honestly, why do they have to make it unique by making it look worse? Like seriously HTC does know what they are doing why doesnt t-mobile just stick to giving people reception and puttign there name on the phone I dont mind T-mobile written on the phone but it looked so nice before, it had chrome on the sides, metalic black front and they ruined the buttons on hte fron too even thought its still metalic black, and also the back doesnt look nearly as good but oh well I should just be happy that it actually is coming to t-mobile but the original design made it the best looking phone that I have ever seen.
The TP2 is definitely in the cards for me as soon as it becomes available for AT&T. Has anyone seen a posted specualtion on that arrival date? I believe I read somewhere it could be as late as November for the TP2 from AT&T. If it is that long away... at least that gives me more time to save up some money. Because when it is launched for AT&T, and if it is green as the Barium pics show, that's enough to make me pay double the price to have HTC's unbranded clean looking version. If AT&T doesn't hack it up, then I'll be glad to purchase it through them.

i haven't heard anything regarding a definite release date for the TP2 on AT&T. but i have heard rumors that it will come out around the same time of the year that the tilt came out, which is october/november. it's late, but as long as it comes out i'm fine with it. like you said, it'll give us time to save up money. this phone IS coming out for AT&T right? More hippie/hacker than childish, but either way your point stands. I don't mind the back too much personally, but that keyboard is over the top. I'd prefer something a little more subtle.

The reason there is no front-facing camera on the TP2 is because no US carrier supports video calling.. yet
Are there any specs for the barium, yet? Like, does the screen tilt? tv-out?etc.?
i've been really curious about something: whats the deal with sim unlocked phones? if i buy a TP2 sim unlocked, i'd be able to use it with any carrier that has a sim card, correct? but my question is, would i be able to use the carriers bands with the phone? like, if i buy the TP2 and transfer my sim card from my tilt to the TP2, would i still get at&t's 3G network? i've never actually known the answer to this :/
It depends if the phone has the compatible frequencies. It usually will have the correct 3G frequencies if it's officially released in that country. Like the Kaiser has support for every frequency set you'd ever need, because it was released internationally, unlike the Touch HD, for example. I'm planning to buy my Touch Pro2 unlocked this time, so I don't have to put up with stupid AT&T. They always manage to ruin the devices in some way, whether it be the keyboard, the color, the Manilla 3D, or the bloatware, or some other travesty.
And, after rambling for a good paragraph or so, the short answer is yes, it should work on AT&T's 3G bands because it's being officially released in the US (confirmed by HTC on its twitter account).

Any of them can support it. The real reason they don't leave them in is because they don't want video calls lagging up their network. They don't have enough of a 3G foundation in place to feel secure with the concept. As long as the software is available (and it is), we could have it. I don't blame them, but it still pisses me off that I can't have it.

I wouldnt even use it over 3g, if i were to use it, id only be over wi-fi in hotspots. In all realness, i doubt id even use that camrea much, but i just hate it when i see one device, that has removed features for (what equates to) the same price.
The front camera isn't much of a big deal really. Don't let it stop you from getting the phone. It looks really cool. I won't mind having it but it doesn't support our 2100 3G networks. . I hardly use my fron camera on the HD. The novelty wears off really quicky. Also video calls cost a lot and you need to be on the same network to get cheaper calls. I only used it once to test it out and never used it again. Mainly because most of my friends won't take video calls cos it cost them money. LOL.
Damn, Mid June?? Thats right around the corner! Looks like Sprint is corning the market in June of 2009. Time to buy some Sprint stock.... weeeeeeeeee
Then sell it!!!
Well, with the 2 hottest QWERTY handsets out this June (Palm Pre and TP2), I am sure Sprint will be very popular this summer.
I am soooooooo happy about this. With this being a CDMA/GSM Hybrid I'll get to have my cake (Sprint) and eat it too (the world)!
Hehehhe! As far as video calling goes, do we really need it? No, I mean, who are we going to call that actually has video calling in the US? May be a handful of business users MIGHT have it on a hard line. Engadget is reporting on a June release for the TP2 but (hold your horses, bad news) this FCC doc https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=1113590&native_or_pdf=pdf clearly states a confidentiality release date of October 31st, 2009! Weird, huh? I mean, things change but I still think it'll be a Q4 release like originally anticipated (leaked for internal Sprint roadmap earlier)
I suspect that's business as usual, though I don't know for sure. But it would make sense to request that sort of thing for several months past the release date as a contingency for a last minute need for change of plans regarding rollout. I don't see this as in any way restricting a carrier or HTC from releasing the phone before the date stated.

for me, thats not so much the point as, i just dont like features, useful or not, being taken away from something with out it being replaced by something else.. and sorry, a sprint/t-mobile/att logo isn't an adequate replacement for a camera. Maybe i wont use it, but i always like it when something is there, and not use it, rather than if something wasn't their, and i needed it.
Does anyone else think the release date is suspect? I want some confirmation first from Sprint as it would make no sense to release 2 smartphones like the Pre and TP2 in the same release time frame, they would hurt each other's sales. Also, Palm has been known for business devices, so saying the Pre is consumer based and the TP2 is business focused would not sell it for me...I'm sure hoping this isn't like when people rumored the Pre as early as April and it got pushed back little by little...personally I can't stand my TP any more as I'm having major problems and would do anything to trade it in for a TP2 sooner instead of later (may have to resort to a Pre if the TP2 doesn't truly come in June).

It was confirmed by Sprint, in a roundabout way, when this was first announced. A Sprint employee said a high level Sprint sales rep demo'd the phone, and said the release date was June.
Sprint is apparently coming out with the Pre, Snap, and TP2 all within a few weeks of each other. This does make sense if you think about it, because they are all very different form factors and each is likely to appeal to different sorts of customers (I wouldn't touch the Pre or Snap with a 10 foot pole - Pre has an untried, little supported OS, and Snap has a keyboard design I personally can't stand - But I can't wait to get my hands on the TP2). It's unlikely, I think, that they will hurt each other's sales. If Sprint can generate some real mass enthusiasm across three different phone styles all at the same, it's probably going to be to Sprint's benefit to have all the buzz being around them instead of the other guys.
Marketing guys will tell you it will even be an advantage to have negative buzz ("love the Pre but they are sold out till August! Dammit!"). No such thing as bad publicity and all.
Sprint really needs to get people talking about them, and not Verizon and AT&T. I think this stands a good chance of being a brilliant strategy.

And this is the thing that finally pushed me over the edge. I end up using CDMA locally and GSM on the road, and I have always kept two phones around: this will *finally* put an end to this. 'Cause honestly, it would be hard to justify the purchase absent that: the hardware underpinning the device is nearly the same as my Touch Pro.

from what i've learned by poking around the CDMA phones require a different firmware correct? among other small things?
i would assume this means less support since it seems like a majority of the genius's here use GSM phones.

AT&T fortress coming Aug 24 ... any truth?

I just read this one from htc blogger. Does anyone know if this has any truth to it? I have to know and need to get one before my Sept trip.
http://htcblogger.com/2009/07/08/htc-fortress-warhawk-to-be-released-by-att-in-august/
hmmm interesting find...
there may be some truth to this, taking into consideration the fact that another member in another thread got some information that the TP2 would be coming out 6-8 weeks after the iPhone 3G S comes out.
however, if that rumor is true, and this article as well, then that means that it got pushed back a little.
no one can really tell you if it's 100% true or not, sorry. but it seems plausible.
The touch pro 2 should come out a week or two around the time of the tmobile release which is scheduled 12 august. So seems plausible.
If that happens the question would be:
Wich one of the 2 (att&t or tmob) will have the less ugly version?
If is the one on the pic I think At&t will win...
p.s Did I read well??
WM 7 refresh awarded with sept 09 launching date???
Mmmmmm...... not sure about that...........
No way.......
Please say it ain't so that the pic of that Fortress is the actual/final product. If so then I think I'm gonna jump ship to Tmo because At&t just screwed up one of the biggest selling points for me. I loved the offsetted keyboard and the spaciousness of the layout, even though the color wasn't at all appealing, I'd still be able to stomach it as long as they didn't mess with the original layout too much. I really hope thats not the final product. BTW, I've been wondering, who came up with these names for Att? It feels like either they let kids do it or they just put a bunch of names in a hat and pic one.

from the rumors i've read WM7 requires capacitive screens. and more powa then the TP2 has on tap. Ala snapdragon or tegra.
i still get the funny notion WM7 has been ready for awhile now and is based off of Windows 7, and MS has just been waiting for the hardware to catch up.
i agree with you about the ugly contest. so far i think Sprint has the best looking version (besides stock)

The only part that doesn't smell right to me is that we still haven't seen the ATT version in the flesh, just the hackish and apparently outdated promo QWERTZ numpad version from who knows when. I get that ATT is full-tilt iPhone-obsessed, but if we were that close to release, I'd still think we'd have seen some real life pics from it the way we have for sprint, verizon and tmo.

I actually like the look of sprint better than the european unlocked version. That chrome just seems like unnecessary shiny for a business class device.

These pics have been out since late May from engadget. It would be usual for T-Mobile to launch their ver in late July and att launch theirs in August. Typically, there is a six-month gap for exclusivity on new products, but given today’s market$ who knows.

looks like Telstra Next G in Australia will be out before AT & T for an 850 UMTS/WCDMA Touch Pro 2. July 22nd is the date

I just hope that old Fortress pic from Engadget's not the final product. Please, oh lawd.
the warhawk looks way better than the fortress.... hell its way sexier than the gsm version as well
the spreadsheet was leaked will most likely NOT be the final product. ATT has a history of messing with their phones' hardware, but I don't think they'll make that mistake here.
and i've heard of an august 17 release date and an august 24th release date, so it seems like it really will be coming out a week or 2 after T-MO's

yea it would work but ATT runs mostly on 1900 and they are expanding their 850...its better to have both. i guess 850 is better than nothing right.
ATT usually mess up on their Keyboard but we always learn to adapt and make good use of it...one thing though they keep the original exterior design ala tilt minus front camera and ala Fuze eith the diamond battery case and all...
i rather they have the same exterior design and ill adapt to the keyboard rather then they change it like Tmobile did (it looks cheap with the 4 buttons sticking out) and spring change their touch pro as well which i dont like...
just my opinion
God i hope the fortress' keyboard isnt red. How gay is that. Its a business phone for gods sake.

Release Date and User Manual for ATT TILT 2 aka Touch Pro 2 aka Fortress

From a very reliable source it seems we can expect the Touch Pro 2 to release with ATT in October 2009.
So save up your cash!
I'm very confident that my intel is solid. I'll see if I can get a pricing quote and exact date soon and post.
Been waiting for the chance to contribute to XDA. Hopefully this tibdit will be a good start, until I learn to cook!!
-----
Just saw some of the posts regarding the keyboard and button layout and such.
I primarily checked out the new icon based HTC theme, the keyboard was large standard querty and very similar to the LG Xenon's at ATT if you want a good comparison (but bigger of course).
I'll inquire about the PTT button/functionality and other questions and post.
----------
9/3/09 update
1 - 3.5 Audio Jack - confirmed?? -> probably not, as per manual, box comes with 3.5mm adapter!!
2 - HTC TF 3D fully integrated icon based interface
Also late september may be the time...we shall see
--------------
10/5/2009
It seems my call on this was on point!
At this point the official release date seems to be 10/8/09. This is the target for the phones to hit distribution. Hopefully this means it will hit stores on this date as well
Here is some more information I was able to dig up:
1—PTT is available on the Tilt 2, not the Pure. It is a standard button on the side below the volume keys and can be reprogrammed if the customer didn’t want to use the PTT feature.
2—The Tilt 2 has a full sliding 5-row qwerty keyboard customized by ATT.
3—Opera browser offering Push Internet capability (no waiting for the page to load) and also the latest Internet Explorer Mobile w/Flash support. Opera is the default browser, IE still in OS as alternate browser.
4—Integrated Facebook and Flickr. If your contacts update either of those sites, it’s automatically updated for you on their contact card.

seriously?? OCTOBER?? I was hoping it wouldn't be that late. after it went from supposedly being released in october to august, I was hoping it just stay at august. man AT&T does NOT know how to satisfy their customers.
yea, I agree the wait sucks. Makes sense though since ATT has usually releases new HTC stuff in the mid to late 4th quarter, despite all the online rumors that claim late summer releases. But I saw the Touch Pro 2 live and in action, and the new interface and larger screen are definitely worth it.
Besides, The tiny screen on my Fuze is killing me!
My kingdom for more screen real estate...
lol at least you have a relatively new phone! my tilt is frustrating me to no end! I can't even use n onscreen keyboard like fingertouch pro cos the phone won't recognize certain presses. so instead of typing 'phone' i'll get 'pjine'. it doesn't even have a g sensor! so when im bored I can't even play teeter or any of those boredeom-fighting games that utilize a g sensor.
but I agree, the TP2 will be worth it. completely.
I doubt we will have to wait until October. Historically, AT&T has released HTC phones 4-6 weeks after they were released to our friends across the pond. This is one of the most highly anticipated phones of the year, do you think AT&T would want to risk losing potential customers to Verizon or T-Mobile who are likely to release it in August? Also, if that spec sheet we saw on the Fortress a while back was real, then AT&T initially had plans to release this device almost two months ago.
I hope what you say comes true. shorter wait would be nice.
Keep in mind the Diamond 2 is releasing with ATT as well. Would make sense financially for them not to release 2 HTC phones simultaneously and have the sales bump heads. Look at the Windows Mobile lineup going back, they don't normally have 2 HTC pocket PC's on the the roster at once.

Ahh I had the tilt and loved it. Still have but mic went out :/
now going to use it to play with rom cooking and apps etc. Downloading the new Developer kits from MS as we speak.
Dont the xda chefs have win 6.5 and tf3d and all running on the tilt by now? that wouldn't help with that touch issue?
Can't wait till more games and apps come out for winmo utilizing the g-sensor will def need that for these upcoming devices.

yea there are WM 6.5 roms and TF3D (more like TF2D) roms out there. I've used a big handful of them. I steered away from 6.5 due to the fact that it doesn't run quite as well as I'd like it to on my tilt. I like the simple look of it, but I just don't like how I have to install different .cab files in order to add a program launcher and people tab and other tabs are readily available with every ROM that runs 6.1.
but yes, an earlier release date would be great! I'm getting tired of waiting...I've been waiting since january/february and it's getting harder lol
Can u ask ur source if the at&t version will have the 3.5mm jack? That would make it worth the wait

After seeing this thread, this was the same question I wanted to ask. It would be real nice and worth the wait if 3.5 mm jack is included.
Cripes, 2 extra months for that, though.... Ugh.
since WM6.5 is getting closer to an official release, do you guys think that ATT's TP2 will be released with WM6.5 out of box?
as far as I know, the 3.5 mm headphone jack is only going to be included on CDMA variants.
If they do indeed hold off until an October release (ugh), that could very well be. WMPU says as much.
The latest builds from Da_G and others (21925 and 21928) include some of the new UI components and rumoured AT&T version of The HTC Touch Pro 2 and Touch Diamond 2 will also get updates to WM6.5.1.

my friend at ATT hes district manager said august 17th-august 24th...i hope hes right...he was right bout the Fuze...i really want to start playing with a new device...but Touch Pro 2 HardSPL has not release so i dont mind the wait too much
I also talked to a friend of mine in ATT management, he went up the the chain of command for me and came back to tell me that no one is talking about the TP2, or should I say they are not letting the info come down the chain. The reason is the iPhone, it's sales are so strong they do not want another device taking away from it. They are also wanting all their sales people to focus on that phone. So Oct sounds right, maybe even Nov to help their end of year sales and Christmas sales.
I talked to a friend of mine in ATT management. He talked his supervisor into going up the management chain. He said that his supervisor said that the regional manager said that they were due in November 2011.
Hey, I can totally do that, too!

I think this is what I am going to do next month because this month I'm totally broke from buying a car. Beside I don't think that the AT&t version is going to look as nice as the unlock one. Did you see how ugly is the T-mobile version? It doesn't look business at all. I prefer paying more money to get the good original nice looking. Also, I don't know why I have this feeling that ATT will mess with keyboard. This feeling is like %93. have a look at the all ATT's phone, they have the same numeric layout. They feel like this is "our look"

What is sprints stance on locking phones down?

A thought occurred to me recently: With Sprint becoming closer to Google lately (GV and Nexus S,) and their commitment to unlimited data (as well as mentioning that you could use the 4g network to replace your home broadband connection,) what is the likelihood of them not demanding that the handset manufacturers tightly lock down their phones?
Reason I ask is because on the Verizon network their android phones are being locked heavily from users rooting or replacing the roms on their phones. Motorola phones are especially bad with this, and HTC is starting to follow suit. But who is to blame, the handset manufacturer, or the carrier?
I know the google branded phones have been traditionally open to modification, even providing a hidden menu with a warranty disclaimer for doing just that. However that was with T-Mobil who has been very open with google in the past (and is about to be AT&Tized.)
I don't suppose anybody with any inside knowledge of sprint has anything to comment on this subject? It would be a very relevant question for those on this forum who are planning on buying the Evo 3D or the Nexus S, and planning on modifying them.

I don't think "the people" with the information would want to openly post that "Sprint' doesn't care about rooting" because the fact is that they do. However, HTC was locked down because, in my opinion, it's a Verizon phone (thunderbolt)

They do care if you root your phone because it voids the warranty, but I do not believe they take the same attitude toward it that Verizon does. I hope it stays that way.

Wrong. The Incredible S is NOT on Verizon. It is a GSM phone. The Verizon version is supposed to be called the Incredible 2 evidently.
So its not just a Verizon thing here and we can toss that reasoning for why they are locked out the window for now.

yeah i know. just stating that just b/c the incridible S is locked doesn't mean its b/c VZ. And the likelihood of HTC doing this is greater since we see a phone on another network get locked.
Hopefully Sprint asks them to not do this to make it easier on you and the other dev's though.

I wanted to express my appreciation to all who have been posting with excellent ideas/concerns with respect to next generation EVO. The show will answer most of the burning question out there, but remember, the cat is not out of the bag yet! So keep up with your wish list as we did with the original EVO almost a year ago. I am positive we will be working on fit and finish until launch day.
I am still packing spread sheets, data reports, and presentation for the big show. I am sure you all can understand this is a busy time. I'll be away for a bit during that period. I'll still throw out some bites from my EVO 4G of course, but were confident the show will have most of the important questions answered.
I will be focusing more on the technical aspects. There is no way a person could stand on stage and talk about DLNA for 20+min. and cover other important aspect of the device.
Let's quash some rumors up front. The screen will be 4.3in Qhd 3d screen. The actual form factor of the EVO 3d will measure up a bit smaller. Good thing for those still wearing jeans with small pockets. We couldn't shrink the over all size that much, because we understand that people want protective cases and we didn’t want this to interfere with the touch screen. The feeling is we have a good balance, where you guys feel as though it's just one big screen in your hand, but very portable. I can say it works really well when playing around with the 3D camera's. Move the camera's in and out when video recording a person face, it does an excellent job of making the face appear as though it is protruding out of EVO 3D's qhd screen. (Weird, especially if it's Dan H)
Big news that nobody is talking about is DLNA and DRM.
DRM: EVOtees have been clammering for Netflix, Hulu, and Blockbuster. You all know that it’s been slow going due to DRM issues. This will not be the case with EVO 3D. Scorpion chipset and some back door work not only enabled this, but polished to a point of being effortless. DRM validation is instantaneous. You go to your favorite Digital content provider, handshakes with DRM on your EVO 3D and your done. Login to your account, your streaming! I thought it was a load of you know what with original EVO. Original EVO will have this feature as well.
DLNA: This technology has been out for some time, but I feel sense UI 2.0 has been able to put the polish it needs to shine. The DRM issue resolved, DLNA will not only allow for digital content to stream to EVO 3D, but to any DLNA certified HDTV/PC monitor/DLNA Mobile device. I am sure your asking what does that mean and how does it apply to us? (Example) Sitting in a local coffee shop, your friend is sporting HTC View tab and you HTC EVO 3D. You ask if your friend has seen this movie.(No) You say start up HTC Media Link and we can check out together. Both of you are watching the same movie on your "OWN" device having a cup of Joe.
HTC Media link will be incorperated in both View and EVO. So far we have tested and ran. 720p/1080p/BMP/GIF/JPEG/XVID/3GP/WMV/MPEG4/H.263/H.264 video formats and Audio: WMA/AAC/MP3/ACC+
So far we are just working on the GUI for improved user interface. Functionality certified, and expected at launch.
Root: I know there is concern out there that "I don't want to have to root my EVO to do XYZ" Every effort is being made to include everything possible up front for EVO 3D right out of the box. (Netflix, Hulu, Full hdmi mirroring, and HTC Media Link) I still need acknowledge Dev community. They have not only kept EVO 4G fresh, vibrant, but more importantly relevant. We want to respect the efforts of the DEV community and honor why android OS is about choice. That is why EVO 3D will not be shipping with a boot loader lock.
Bluetooth: larger library, we herd, we listen, and we going to deliver. (fingers crossed) We are in the process of setting up a library targeting specifically for k/b, mouse, and yes game pads. I mentioned in an early post w/new sense UI 2.0 EVO 3D will be more at home than ever in landscape mode. We have simultaneously used bluetooth k/b mouse combo with DLNA in the back ground. You can look up Netflix movies w/mouse/kb and stream it to DLNA HDTV. We’ve been listening.
I know on the thread somebody mentioned they would like more on board memory cause XYZ phone has 16gig on board memory. Cost is important factor to consider, because we know we need to make EVO 3D appealing to everyone. Most devices with a 16gig, 32gig, have the option of a removable sdcard. DRM improvements has allowed us to enhance app2sd. Once again, were early in the game as silicon improves, it's a simple matter of swapping out die's. So there is a potential of improvement, if we can do it, and keep cost to the consumer in mind, it will happen. I am sure you all have herd of 128gig sdcard and were working on getting that implemented for original EVO through either the Dev community or OTA. EVO 3D can't talk about that.
fps lock: Not on EVO 3D. Dual core processors, larger battery, more efficient Adreno GPU made this a non issue.
Last but not least, on a lighter note, EVO 3D printing money? Not in our life time! Sprint does have some great programs supporting EVO 3D, like $125 dollars off to port over a new cell number, premier customer program, and mail in rebate. That is about as close EVO 3D will get to printing money! (Enjoyed YouTube Clip too.)
Now it’s time for a fine scotch/cigar and catch a plane in the morning.
Enjoy the show! Cheers,
BSOD(>-_0<)
