OK I know this has been asked a thousand times before but with WM6.5 coming up I just wondered if it would at last be possible to auto download internet pictures within e-mails?
I get a lot of e-mails with picture links in it and am tired of having to tap the 'internet pictures blocked' button every single time. Of course once the pictures have been downloaded, Outlook remembers this and displays them every time you open that e-mail but who generally opens an e-mail more than once or twice?
I would have thought that some bright spark somewhere would have hacked this shortcoming by now but if not, is it possible? Failing that, does anyone know if it will be possible in WM6.5 or even WM7.0?
Tried every alternative under the sun where e-mail clients are concerned but every single one falls way short of the mark in their own way.
Playing on a friend's iPhone and Blackberry that natively supports pictures in e-mails makes me want this feature so badly!
+1
I find it really annoying too!

It's not an issue of native support (Pictures are natively supported in Outlook (May it be pocket outlook or Outlook 2007). The idea is to protect you from spam / phishing mails, which use the fact that by downloading the pics you signal in a way that your email address is valid
In Outlook 2007 (ie not the mobile one) it is possible to put a sender or a domain name in a "safe list" and then for upcoming emails images are downloaded automatically without having to click on "Download Internet pictures". I agree it would be nice to have this also in pocket Outlook
If I had to add one request about one point that kept on pissing me off: in the "Sent Folder" I can only see the sneder's name (Me !!!) which is completely useless. Would be much better to have the address of the receiver... (If anybody knows a hack...)

When I open a Sent message, I see my address at the top. But if I scroll UP, the receiver is there!

Well, I am sure that some people out there might have a similar issue with their device. I have finally been able to setup my e-mail accounts to work properly. I have it turned on to connect to "The Internet" (Wi-Fi on the Dash) every 15 minutes to check for new email. However, when I have the Wi-Fi feature turned off, it won't do it; which is what I want it to do. But when I have it connected to the laptop via USB to charge, it checks for the e-mail. This is pointless as I am already receiving the e-mails on my laptop.
Is there a way that I can have it not use the USB to check for e-mails? I heard in another forum that I can set ActiveSync to "Work" which might resolve the problem. Anyone know how I can do that?
Finally, if that doesn't work, what e-mail applications do you guys recommend? I have my Outlook on my laptop setup so that I receive e-mails from both my account into a single Inbox and I have the option of choosing what account I want to send from. Something like that for the Q/Dash would be very useful.
Oh, and one more thing. Is there a way to have the Q/Dash delete the messages from the server when deleting from the handheld? I would like to be able to filter my messages when receiving them on the handheld so that I don't have to re-read them on my laptop when I get home. If there isn't a setting for it, is there a program that offers this option?
Thanks in advance...
Deleting messages from server
I'm assuming you're using POP and not IMAP to check your messages on your Dash. If so, this is what I do to delete messages on the server:
1. Download messages onto Dash (of course)
2. Delete messages on Dash
3. Empty the Deleted Items folder on Dash
4. Send/Receive messages.
This has the effect of removing the deleted messages from the server. Of course, you must also delete them on the Dash -- so I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for. Another option is to use IMAP...but my email server doesn't support it so I'm using POP.
Hope that helps!

Move to Microsoft Exchange you will get Direct Push to your device and will not have to worry ever about e-mail synchronization issues
How would I move to Microsoft Exchange? Can you be a little more specific?
If your school or office doesn't offer it, this is for personal use -- you'll need a hosted Exchange service. There are a lot out there, google 'hosted exchange', or, take a look at the best, http://4smartphone.net

Anyone know how to change ActiveSync to "Work" instead of "The Internet"?
Change the sync directories.
Can you explain how. I'm really ignorant when it comes to these things.
Don't remember exactly, I found it in the help files, or the manual -- one or the other -- take a look.

If you want a free hosted exchange service that does push email and 1 Gb of storage will suffice, you could also try Mail2Web:
https://services.mail2web.com/signup/mail2weblive/mail2webLive_01.asp
Looks good -- just curious though, I noticed the free version is for use with the @mail2web email address format -- can you pay and use your own domain name. That's how 4smartphone.net works, but I couldn't find info on it at the mail2web site.

- not sure, but not a bad trade-off for free, right ?
Call me part of the ingnorant bunch too, but how can I configure POP on my DASH?
I connect through Wifi all the time. When I got to configure "Email Setup" and put my info in, is says contacting server please wait and nothing happens. It tries for a few minutes and then craps out and say it could not connect? But I can browse the web, can view my mail though my web mail accounts and can view my Yahoo account.
Please some advise on this.
you are part of the ignoran bunch! ;P
Is there a way to be notified of new messages when they hit folders other than the inbox. I have several developers that have server side rules that send error messages and other emails to certain folders but it does not tell them they have a new email.
My other question is how can I make it so that when you view your emails it only shows the subject and from lines. I would think this would be an easy hack but I can not find it.
Thanks
Tom
No! Havent seen anyone get new mail notificiations working for subfolders working.
Yeah, that would be great. I deleted all my rules for that same reason. No notifications.
This is the most annoying "feature" for Outlook (on whatever platform), only new email in the default Inbox folder will notified.
However, if you install MS Voice Command 1.6 it will read the email subject and senders name even if it arrives in (gets sortet do) a subfolder.
I've got a separate IMAP account on my phone (i.e. not outlook mail) - it audibly alerts when I get mail (checks every 30 mins) but no vibrate unfortunately However this is the main folder of the IMAP account, not sure if it would work for subfolders.
Any helpful programmer wanna have a go at this, it would be very useful
Thanks
I will look at the Voice Command software and also watch this post to see if there are any better ways to get this functionality.
On email viewing portion of my post there was an application that I came across in the last month that could do this but I can not find it anymore. If anyone knows how to do this hook me up.
Mine works too well
I have just the opposite going on. When a mail comes in that is processed by a rule, I ALWAYS get new mail notification, and sooner than my Outlook does.
Push mail is processed by Exchange before Outlook sees it. Therefore the inbox rules don't take effect on my phone until the next sync.
Your mileage may vary, but this has been my experience. That being said, I'll look into coding up a lightweight notification utility. Might be fun.
I'm just digging into the WM 6.0 SDK and there are some API hooks to do this.

Aren't rules, even if they're setup on Outlook, syncd with your exchange server? So your phone should drop each email into the right folder.

That's true, but I think the issue is that when it's moved to a folder and is not in the inbox, they don't get any notifications that a new message has arrived.
It seems that you are only notified when there is mail in the INBOX, but not anywhere else.
As far as notifications and filters go, Windows Mobile 5/6 is much more limited compared to the BlackBerry.
I'm going to have to do some searching to see if there's at least a 3rd party mail app (POP or IMAP) that has more features.
Rules processing
My rules, for reference, run on Outlook (client side).
Because my phone gets messages from Exchange before Outlook, I get notified, even if I've set a rule to move it out of the inbox and mark it as read.
Like I said earlier, I don't know how POP or IMAP clients react compared to Exchange, but I get my messages on my device before Outlook (client) does.
No rules run on the phone. Maybe we need to consider that as an add-on???

Two questions regarding email on my Dash (WM5 "Smartphone" (sic))...
1) How do I set a Reply-To: field so that my recipients send their email replies to another address ?
2) How can I delete all the emails in a given Dash email account without having to either delete the entire account and settings from the Dash, or having to manually select every email and hitting Delete ? I believe the PPC version of Outlook has this function (Clear).
Most decent email clients have these two functions readily available...
thx
Although i wish i could help, i cannot as im wondering the same thing you are. I kind of hate having to select and delete every since email i recieve.

I found this tidbit on a Q site:
http://blogs.msdn.com/dennisq/archive/2006/08/29/730874.aspx
Its an add-on (Inbox Extended) to the SP Outlook email client implementing a "Mark all as read" and a "Delete all" functions. It looks promising ... Now to find a Reply-To solution...
Also I now have a question about FTP for the Dash... PIE works sorta... but produces strange "Improper Data Connection configuration error messages" after nearly every FTP command, even though the end result is correct, and it doesn't allow for prompting of username/password, which means you must enter these as part of the URL (very bad since it becomes a permanent history record). Any better solutions ?
WOW THANKS - been looking for this solution for awhile!
Hi,
I am running Ricky's v24 WM 6.1. I use EasySync to sync with my Lotus Notes contact, calendar, todo, and email. Everyday, i get this alert from "DontForget" indicating that I have 26 unread email. The email reader in the sliding panel indicates 0 mail.
I'd imagine Outlook email downloaded via ActiveSync would be in similar situation, in case you don't use Notes.
Any suggestions on what I can use to read, or just get rid of the email downloaded via sync? I've changed the EasySync setting so it no longer downloads email.
Many thanks!
the sliding panel will show you how many new emails you have. Once you acces the email page that will disappear; this does not mean you have read all the emails. You may have unread emails in your folder and that may cause "Don't forget" to give you a message. Look through all your emails and look for the ones that show that they havent been read.
Hopefully that helps.
what application can I use to read the email?

Thank you for the reply! The problem is, I don't know what application I can use to read the email. I normally rely on the sliding panel to take me to the email application, but in this case, it only tells me the there is no MMS message. Any suggestions on which program to run? Or where is the folder?
thanks, again!
if you can get to SMS or MMS just move the D pad to the right or left till it shows emails.

I've had this problem before, where one of my options in my sliding panels is inaccessible. Try restarting the phone and see if e-mail is accessible after that.
Does any software to sync Lotus Notes with WM6.1
I am seriously considering buying the HTC Touch Diamond, which runs on WM6.1. My company uses Lotus Notes. It is a show stopper if I can't see my email on this device. When I talked to Easy Sync yesterday, they tried to get me to buy something to load on my server at work, which obviously is not the same as the basic Easy Sync software. M-Notes doesn't seem to have anything either. Any other suggestions?

there is an app called mnotes made by commontime. there is a trial version of it so you can try before you buy. i dont think on the server side you need additional software. if you dont have a phone with 6.1, all i can suggest is to find a buddy that does and let him test it on your lotus server. the software does run on wm6, so im pretty certain it wont be an issue on 6.1. i realize im a complete stranger, but if all else fails, let me know and i can test it against your server.
I've done my due diligence (searching for HOURS on end), so I know this has been discussed many times but I still have not seen any sort of solution or progress on how to fix the issue.
Here is the issue: Gmail/Google accounts in WP7, when you press the Trash-can icon to delete your email(s), it does not actually move the email to the 'Trash' folder (or how Gmail understands it, the 'Trash' label). It simply removes the 'Inbox' label but still keeps the message under 'All Mail'.
I've tried everything - set up my email account as an ActiveSync account and tried deleting, going to my Gmail (or any other of my email accounts that resides on Google Apps) account settings via the web browser and try fiddling with the Advanced IMAP options, but nothing.
Does anyone have any solution for this? Unfortunately, this is pretty much a dealbreaker for me with WP7 - I just purchased the HTC Trophy. I want to really love the OS/device (and I do love the OS) but being able to properly delete my Google/Gmail emails is crucial.
I've heard some people, as a temporary stop-gap, to just use the "Move to Folder" and move the email message to [Gmail]\Trash, but I don't see that folder in WP7. Any ideas on this?
Any help or insight in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
There is no solution (as in setting you can change in WP7 or on google.com) that changes this behavior. The only real option is to occasionally log in to your email account on the website and purge old mail from all mail. That's what I do about once every couple of months.
Thanks for the response. That's a real bummer. Do you or anyone know if this is something Microsoft plans on fixing? Basically it just entails making the Delete/Trash Can -> Remove Inbox Label + Add Trash Label to the message.
Also, do you know how I could view the [Gmail]\Trash folder/label? When I try to browse All Folders, it doesn't show up. Any ideas?
Thanks.

You should be able to change imap settings in gmail. There's a few articles I found, but they're a bit old, and I'm apparently too new of a member to link. I've gone ahead to write a few instructions.
1. Go to settings in your gmail
2. Go to the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab
3. In IMAP access, under "When I mark a message in IMAP as deleted:" select "Auto-expunge off"
4. In IMAP access, under "When a message is marked as deleted and expunged from the last visible IMAP folder:" select "Move the message to the Trash" or "Immediately delete the message forever"
I'm still trying to figure out how exactly the behavior works on my own device. From my understanding, by doing this, you'll send deleted message to the trash rather than archive. It appears that you lose the "instant" server update (so you might have emails that you delete on your phone stay in your inbox as unread for a while).
**edit for further research - It appears that your message will only be deleted if there are no other labels for it. Apparently [gmail]all mail counts as a label. So what the heck did I tell you to do?
Thanks for the reply. I don't understand what your last part meant..the part about your edit for further research. Please clarify. Thanks.

This, and it's the same for IOS, not a WP7 issue.
I read numerous guides looking for a solution but there isn't one. If an email exists in another view, i.e. "All Mail" then it won't be deleted.
After using IOS and WP7 this was one of the main reasons for moving to Android. It may seem a bit extreme but I hate having email I don't need. Everything gets read and deleted.
What you say is true in a technical sense, but it misses the underlying issue. Gmail has one label, Gmail/Trash, that is special. Any email that is sent there automatically has all other labels removed. However, it is up to an email client to apply the label. For example, the Thunderbird email client on Windows does just that. If I read an email in my Inbox, and then click the Delete button, Thunderbird sends and IMAP notification to Gmail to apply the Gmail/Trash label to the message, and it is instantly gone from both my Inbox and All Mail. And the Gmail/Trash label is automatically purged after 30 days.
The problem with WP7 and iOS is that they don't (and possibly can't) send the same notification. All they currently do is notify Gmail to remove the Inbox label. And, as has already been noted, the fact that the email is still in All Mail causes it to be retained on the server.
Thanks for the info, guys. I realize and understand that the culprit is the WP7 mail client, not Gmail.
As a temporary workaround (I am seriously hoping they fix this.. you guys should visit http://windowsphone.uservoice.com/f...eting-email-in-gmail-really-delete-?ref=title to vote for adding this feature), I created a new label called "WP7 Trash". From now on, when I want to "delete" mail, I simply move to to that folder/label in the WP7 mail client, and then anytime down the road I can log into my accounts and just delete all the mail in that folder/label.
Kind of kludgy, but it's the only thing I can think of...
Let me know your thoughts.
After futzing around a bit more on the internet, i've found that some people are able to get the desired "trash button = delete" action if you add your gmail account as an Exchange account instead of as a "Google Account". I haven't tried it yet, but since it isn't dealing with Gmail's odd IMAP implementation, perhaps you will get better results.
Setting up your Gmail account as an Exchange/ActiveSync account doesn't work - I've tested it several times and nothing. I do have my accounts set up as Exchange/ActiveSync because I've heard that it uses less battery than using the "Add Google Email Account" option in WP7.
The only temp-solution I've found is the create a WP7-Trash label and move messages to that folder (for later deletion once you log into the Gmail web interface).
If anyone CAN get the Delete = Trash working on ActiveSync/Exchange setups, by all means let us know!
