There's a two-part video review that tried several bitrates and came up with an ideal for multiple formats based on CorePlayer's benchmarks. Check the video review thread.
As for 720, that's a 1280x720 resolution, so if you're converting specifically for the TP2, it's a waste and will yield lower quality video than a lower resolution because the device is having to scale it down. Shoot for 800x480 if you want the video to be ideal for the device.
Best converter is going to be a matter of personal taste. Many of the free compression programs out there are just frontends for programs like ffmpeg and mencoder, so the quality ends up being the same. It's just a question of what interface you prefer.

ive used the convertor terryd1980 linked to. and its great, slow on my pc (though that'll be my pc's fault) but after a small problem in using large 4gb+ files it seems fine now.
i did a bit of a test with a tv episode. a 1gb 720p file converted with the above and played through album (with a bitrate of 750), compared to coreplayer playing an unconverted 200mb dvd rip. although the dvd rips still looked excellent and played perfectly the originally hd file looked a touch better. i didnt notice any playback issues and there didnt appear to be any skipped frames. i dont know if there's anyway to display how many frames were dropped using album, but coreplayer shows 0 dropped frames after its finished playing.
I dont think it is your computer Jamie, mine runs fairly slowly too and I've spent a lot of cash making my PC pretty beefy.
As it seems to do a great job converting I'm not too fussed but I will leave it going in the background or before I leave for work so that it doesnt bother me.

greate .. thx
The video quality is not very good. I was under the impression (from reviews) before I bought my Desire that it would record at close to 30 frames per second (fps), but I'm only getting frame rates of 13 - 16fps which is brutal. My nokia used to record at 28 - 30fps.
Was I wrong to think the Desire would do 30fps? I know the HD recording was not coming etc, but I thought 30fps was standard.
brutal.
It is standard alright. My Nokia N95 8GB from 3 years ago took much smoother videos @30FPS. Hell, even an LG Viewty from 3 years ago can record at 120FPS and that's not even a smartphone.
We're getting 720P recording so i'm assuming they will fix the FPS issue aswell with the video recording. If they don't then I can only imagine how slow 720P recording will be.
I've noticed the same thing and am quite annoyed about it. I've realised through testing that the brighter it is, the higher the fps is. I got it up to 20fps today outside but indoors its more like 10fps even when using lower resolutions. Maybe the reviewers should have tested this rather than just quoting the specs.

what do u mean by this? is it sure that the desire will be able to record videos at 720p?

The Snapdragon CPU supports 720P encoding and decoding hat and apparently HTC confirmed that DivX and 720P recording will be coming to the Desire in an update.
Let's hope they keep their word.
Yeah I agree, the reviewers should have done their homework instead of 'guessing' the stats. I guess they thought it impossible that the Desire could have anything less than 30fps. The Nexus one is listed as 20fps minimum rate. Is it really faster than Desire?
GSM arena who are normally very reliable had 30fps as the Desire recording rate until recently. now its 15fps on their Desire stats page.
I would not even be bothered if HTC don't bring in HD video recording, once they at least bring 30fps at 800x480. I mean its a 1ghz phone with plenty of RAM, this should be a piece of pie for it to handle. My nokia had a 300mhz chip and 128mb of RAM and did it no problem. (640x480 @ 30fps)
Well personall I think the video recording is pretty good. Its definately better than my old Xperia X1.
10 - 15fps is 'passable' but not very good in real world terms. Certainly not on a cutting edge 1ghz phone thats capable (hardware wise) of recording 720p at 30fps. I used to get 30fps video from my old N82 and its more fluid than on the Desire. As I say, its passable on Desire, but I think 30fps is pretty much the accepted minimum for the past while. Lets hope it comes in an update.

Well, hope dies last. HTC and their word... Have a look at Hero topic, and search for the so called 2.1 update for Hero. Shame on HTC!
Sorry for the offtopc.
Hero update is near, as a matter of fact (tweet this week from HTC Benelux director).
I think this is a software limitation slowing the exposure on low light to brighten the image. it'd be nice to be able to adjust this feature though.

can u upload on youtube any samples as i am thinking of updating to desire from x1 as well in a week's time
there are alot of Desire made videos on youtube already. just do a search. They look 'ok', some of them, but the original files are still only about 16 - 18 fps at best! 30fps nakes the video seem more fluid. You'd really need to compare side by side to see the difference I mean. (I attached 30fps nokia clip at bottom. WOW for the difference. very obvious)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dnxcfjq3QvE (desire at 15fps)
and another
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnRpOSP0U-o (desire at 15fps)
and now compare to the lower res 640x480 Nokia but filmed at almost double frame rate of 30fps. Very fluid and sharp.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojt5LS4LFZc (Nokia X6 at 30fps)
I think alot of people will be impressed and happy enough with this level of video recording. I was just irked as I expected 30fps and thought that was pretty much the minimum on new phones now.
thx . i think the vid qlty is gud on desire .... hmmmm .... better than x1 anywayz by the looks of it
My N95 8GB outperforms the Desire in video recording. What's the point in a high res video camera if it records at 15fps?
I get 12fps indoors... haven't seen higher in over 50 recordings. Colour reproduction is also off. N95 sure does beat the pants off it in this area.

How do you tell what frames per second you're getting? Can't seem to find anything in the phone that will tell me.
Well now there is root acces. So this means we can put custom roms on our decvice and/or we can adjust the build.prop so we can also adjust the camera settings...
Personally I think there is no need to worry. Just have patience
Cheers Bart. Patience it is.
Meson1 I use a codec analyser like 'gspot' to look at the details and properties of the video files. If you use Windows 7 you can also just click on the file in explorer and it displays the frame rate and associated details at the bottom of screen.
Its easier to just long press the video and select details to see the frame rate and other info.

Hi guys.
I'm new here, so if I put this in the wrong category please correct me.
I got my Desire with the official Froyo update on it, and as many others I'm very disappointed by the 720p video, I get 24-26 fps on a very bright day and sound is horrible.
So I was wondering, are there any roms that gives you 30fps 720p and/or better audio?..
My phone is not rooted, but I will be willing to do it for a better phone experience as I'm very very disappointed..
This is my first Android phone..

Bad performance filming in 720p
I agree with you, Froyo is faster but filming in 720p is a disaster Stuttering performance!!!! How could they do this upgrade with no trying!!! Is ther any solution? I thinking to go back to my old HD2. TV programs looking back is still in a smaller view and not better than before...
Just wondering if there are any roms which have greater 720p fps?
Which is the best?
Thanks for answering.
the problem isnt with the roms, its with adreno the gpu! this is all its capable of, untill we find a way to o/c the gpu, its gunna have to do .....
It seems that sense roms are the main offenders when it comes to video stuttering, (not sure about sense HD as there is no camera yet).
OD, MIUI and Defrost all do not stutter for me, and record at about 27 ish FPS in good lighting conditions.
I can confirm that. Switched from LeeDroid to DeFrost and HD video performance was greatly improved!
Is anyone currently trying to figure out a way to overclock the GPU?
I want it too. But I think it is not so easy and safe (class 6 shdc? overheating..)

OK , I am new here, but this is what I think , where the problem lies.
A bit of background first:
A few months ago, when I got my Desire with factory 2.1 rom, I took some videos, at 800X480 . I have checked them today, they all are at full 25fps (I am in UK) , no juddering and very smooth. here is the interesting bit! the bit rate was an average of 2Mb/s for encoding.
Recently, after upgrading to Froyo, I realized that the video capture is awefull, so like a fool, I got myself, a new 16GB class6 card, tried it again, and same rubbish fps I got.
Then I noticed that now videos are being recorded at around 8Mb/s !!
I believe the higher bitrate recording is where the blame lies. nothing else.
I think, some clever sod, thought lets raise the bitrate to make it easier on the processor, but the extra bitrate, has caused problems elsewhere.

have you checked the codecs?
what one works best for you? mpeg-4, h.264 or h.263 ?
they are all as bad as each other.
It's because it saves the video to the SD card instead of internal memory and the GPU isn't the best so theyw ill always be jumpy.
But i thought it can do 720p only with 3GP, if it would use H.264 probably will get better result.
It has nothing to do with "saving it on sd card" and its write speed. even a basic class 2 card has enough write speed for proper operation.
My phone, on android 2.1 with a basic card could manage 800x480 @25fps easily, but on Froyo can not do the same, nevermind 720p.
something has gone wrong somewhere with the camera, and I'll doubt if it ever gets fixed.
After all, how else could they push new models with better capabilities, if older medels performed just as well ?
On a different note, for those who are not aware, 3GP is container format, not a codec! just like AVI or MKV are just containers. within these containers you have various components such as video, audio subtitles etc. H263 , H264, Divx etc. are all derivatives of Mpeg4 video codec. To make matters more confusing Mp4 is also a container and not the same as Mpeg4!! Just as Mp3 is not the same as Mpeg3!! ( to my knowledge mpeg3 was abandoned). Just for your information.
I just shot a small video clip today with leedroid, was stunned that 720p was unusable if anything moved in the picture.
Well, didn't have time to think too much about it, so changed to 480, should increase fps, but did not, which means camera is useless if there is any faster than slow movement in the picture.
My old ericsson t650 could do 30 fps nightshots with modified camera driver, so kinda expecting a desire should at least do 30 fps nightshots with 480p
Has there been any update on this, or still waiting for someone to figure out how to hack the camera?
Hi,
I'd like to convert videos directly from my phone.
As I have most of the videos on HQ/HD format, I'm unable to share them with my friends, It'd be great if I find an app to convert the videos in my phone itself.
Though I realize that Converting videos takes a lot of CPU resource, ain't it possible with the 1GHZ humming bird chip?
Why don't you record the video in lower resolution?
video processing are insanely CPU intensive tasks. Even on a Core 2 Duo 2 GHz it still takes a long time to process. Doing that on a single core 1 GHz CPU will take forever.
agree, it doesn't make any sense to do video encoding conversion in the phone itself
the battery will die long before you can finish the conversion.
Now I see, why no one has attempted for it
BTW, I don't need to convert camera videos into low res, but the videos that I already have.
@ Thread Astaire , even for camera videos, I can't go back in time machine and take the video in lower resolution right? And I can't record all the videos in low resolution, just because my friend's phone isn't compatible with that format.
That's why I was looking for a mobile video converter . . . .
Hmmm... Guess it'll take few more years for this to come true...
At that time it wouldn´t be needed
Yeah, just wondering why iPhone 4 is able to do HD video editing with similar hardware. Is there any trick being used on iMovie ?
You know video editing has been done on PCs since the 100-200MHz CPU era right?
Video conversion also. And converting a 5 minute video on the SGS will not take that long as it is probably faster than the PC I had 8-10 years ago. The real problem is the lack for video editing app for Android. Hopefully this will soon change with such powerful hardware emerging lately.
I saw in one of the reviews by Lon Seidman in YouTube that he mentions that he noticed the images/graphics (maybe for movies or games) that there is a slight drop in sharpness!! Is this true? did anyone notice?
I am thinking - if I run a high resolution movie like a 4K or even HD on a normal 5.1.1 android player and remix OS which also runs the same, should look the same. Not sure, how the remix might have gone to change the quality of render?

I am using remix os on a netbook acer aspire one 753 and it doesnt render 720p videos on youtube well. it only needs a graphics driver though. any one has an idea? although I dont think there is enough support for that yet.

I have the vensmile U1, Yesterday I began watching GOT with h.265 (god bless torrents) on 4k tv, using render by hardware and it works just perfect (MX player). I think it depends on the processor and ram available, and graphics card of cuz.
