Well suddenly I couldn't charge my device, I switched chargers, switched the cables, tried connecting to the PC (with different cables) my old VOX does fine with all the connections too... so I guess something broke internally.
Don't suppose anyone else has had these problems?
Check out the option..
... under settings... power, there is an option to not charge device when connected to a pc while power is on. I cant begin to imagine why its there, but it is, and it causes the symptoms u describe...

Hi folks,
i purchased a new usb cable today. its retractable, called 'Sync "N" Charge'. it is essentially the same connections as the stock usb connection cable.
the problem is when i try to connect my (Imate Jam) to my PC(winXPpro) it either freezes my pc, or puts up this msg.
USB device not recognised, one of the usb devices has malfunctioned, click here(opens up systems properties).
It does charge the Jam. well atleast the orange charge indicator lights up(i havent checked for actual charge).
The device drivers for my Jam are fine seeing as it still works when i connect with my original cable.
my original cable works fine, even if i switch straight back to it after trying to connect with the new cable.
I think the cable may be wired incorrectly eg postive and neg prolly fine but the data pins are screwie some how, sound like a reasonable guess?
Is there something else that im not thinking of/dont know about that could be causing the problem?.
bleh just typed all that and answered my own question. the data pins in the new plug are a little bit shorter than the power plug. I use a silicone case on my Jam which stops the plug from pushing in all the way by like 0.25mm. took off the case and bingo problem fixed.
I hate when that happens.
Ok well i might as well say that its a nifty little piece of hardware now that i got it working.
Which leads me another question, the reason i got this new cable was to be able to leave it in my bag and pull it out when i wanted to use my Jam like a 1gb usb card(1gb sd card). the times when i wanted to do this would be at university.
is there a way to make a pc recognise the jam like a usb drive instead of a pocketpc upon connection? i wont beable to install activesync on university pc's.
Thanks

i searched around and i cant find the thread on this.
i was charging my phone through the USB port and it just randomly disconnected. i reconnected at it is recognized for a second then disconnects. the menu comes up on the screen and i see the notification at the top, but after about 2 seconds it just acts like i unplugged it
i have tried multiple USB ports, cables and different PC's and they all do the same thing now.
i installed HTC sync and rebooted the machine. i changed the power settings on the machine and made sure that the USB power management is disabled.
does any one have any idea whats going on?
Do you have a auto kill app such as taskiller ?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
no... the phone was just hard reset. the issue was there prior to the hard reset
it does the same thing on my laptop and desktop
both are windows 7 x46 with HTC sync installed
could be your usb port on your handset OR/AND the usb cable's tip that you insert into the port could be loose/failing. wiggle the usb cord at the end where it connects to the phone GENTLY and see if its loose. should be s snug fit...
I have the same problem n started a few threads about it n havent gotten anywhere. My work computer has no problem seeing my phone but my personal computer will not, very very strange. Ill watch this thread n see if a solutions comes about.
seems like a very snug fit too me...
i should also mention that plugged in to the wall charger it has no problems
i have tried 3 different cables and 3 different computer and all USB ports on those computers, all the same issue
I didn't have this issue till now but suddenly same thing started happening to my phone..
I have plugged in my phone using USB with laptop and it shows me charging but after two minute it just discount it...
me and my buddy have the exact same issue here. what i do is, i unplug it a few times and on the 4th i keep it it. seems to be a bit more stable that way.
i don't think this is an issue with faulty usb ports on everyone's separate computers. (could be but i frelling doubt it) ive tried this in multiple windows machines (win7x64 and xp), and it happened on all of them. Only once did it happen on my work mac. i have not, however, tried a different micro usb > usb cable. i only used the htc one. we could have faulty cables. or it could be a phone issue itself, hardware wise whereas these are the only common denominators we have in this problem that i can see.
i lean towards faulty batch of cables. if you plug in the cable to your phone and computer, and wiggle the middle of the cable without touching the ends, it will disconnect.
what gets me is that there is no problem when it connects to the wall usb port. that is confusing. maybe the cable needs a more heavy flow of power to stay connected, which then leads me to believe that usb drives don't have enough juice to keep the thing going, or at least variable flows of power.
i know the phone has an "issue/feature" where it will stop charging the phone completely when it gets to 100% even if you leave it on the charger. maybe some sort of overcharging fail safe right? so what if there is something wonky going on with the phones usb port, or the phone cuts off the connection thinking your done using it?
its late, im speculating just throwing stuff out there.
I'm getting the same problem. Thing is, if it needed more power, why would it still work in a mac? I didnt have this problem until I went through a few different ROMS. So I dunno. I never had this problem before root. But I dont see any reason why it shouldnt fuction normally
Hi,
I've used a USB charger on all my phones for a few years now. Just plug phone in on my desk and no worries. However my new Defy doesn't seem to take a charge from the USB on my network device (it's not a full PC). However my HTC HD2 could get a charge from it so:
1. Is the Defy more power hungry that it won't charge from an ND (I assume NDs put out less power over USB than a PC)
2. Does it just not show on the battery on the Defy that it's charging?
3. Have I missed something simple? I've gone into USB connection and selected charge only. I can't install drivers on the ND though, could that be it? The ND hasn't said it's found new hardware either though.
Thanks in advance for advice
motorola has a notorious reputation on this, they require a usb driver to be installed for charging some of their phones...
i think there's some strange combinations at work about this but, just use a standalone charger and it should solve the problem.
Thanks. I thought it would be that.
Bit short of plug sockets at work but I'll figure something out
Another point to note is that the Defy is very fussy regarding USB cables. A lot of cheap ones will pass data but no charge.

Would you consider hacking a usb cable to make a charging lead? A standard usb lead plugged into a PC will try to enumerate with the PC before it starts to draw power from the PC. However if you hacked a usb cable and shorted the DM and DP lines on the phone side, the phone 'should' detect the cable as a mains charger rather than a PC, thus enabling charge without any drivers on the PC. It would be something like the attachment...
Thanks for all the replies. Although my USB cable wasn't cheap and was capable of charging an HD2 which must be more power hungry than a Defy, it turns out the Defy is really fussy. It's charging fine through the Motorola USB lead on my network device.
My USB loading experience
Hi,
just to share my exp:
- loading with most USB loaders: fine
- My Car loaders and my multi power adaptor with usb can load everything but the defy
- on Computer no problem (some say you will have better battery performance when loading on non Computer: I can´t see a difference)
- cable doesn´t change anything

I've bought a couple of USB cables from ebay. My Defy seems to connect and disconnect when using them, like it has a loose connection. If I use the Motorola one, of course it's fine!
i can't connect my sgs2 to USB storage. when i plug in the usb cable to my computer and phone it will charge but nothing else happen. i had stock rom before but are currently using jug 4.0. i thought it was the rom so i downgraded to 3.69. still the same problem. i mean i can do anything with the phone just can't let my computer detect the phone. i tried to reinstall the driver, nothing works. please help!
Is your cable a samsung branded one? I had that same problem but with stock rom. I used an LG branded cable and the phone would connect to the computer and charge, but would not go into USB mode.
yeah, i am using the one that came with the phone, i guess i will try to use a different one. it was working fine before, don't know why it just stopped!
This has happened a few time for me. Sometimes the phone has only needed a reboot, the wire definitely plays a big role... I bought some cheap cables that didn't work at all... some of the older roms wouldn't show USB connected unless drivers were installed (kies). An issue I've more recently unveiled is after using an MHL adapter sometimes the USB will connect for 30-60 seconds before unmounting storage again. Hope that helps
My SGSII HercuDom needs more w00t. It always needs more w00t!
I had the same problem on a stock phone (purchased in late Oct from T-Mobile store in Arizona). I would connect it to the computer and it would charge but would not recognize the USB function (for data transfer or modem use).
Took it back to T-Mobile and they overnighted me a new one for no charge. New one works fine.

Dont know how water/moisture got in the port but thats there explanation. All it does is charge from pc, tried using 3 different cables 3 different pc and same thing. Some say a tooth brush might help but tried it and still same.

Cant charge or connect to USB
Hello, i just bought a samsung sgh i777 and when i try to connect it to charge it, wheter is on the wall or computer, a battery starts to flash, if i disconnect it, the phone starts as if you are turning it on. So far i've tried: Change the battery, change the charger several times, put factory settings and still the same problem, can anyone help me?
Thanks,
FS
My phone isn't detected by my Winodws computers at all.
If I plug it into one of the USB ports directly, the phone starts charging, but that's it.
This is obviously not a driver issue as there's no unknown devices in Windows.
I tried different USB cables, USB-C and MicroUSB-to-USB-C adapters to no effect. Also tried this on two computers to no effect.
There's nothing in the phone's USB-C port (dust, dirt etc) and it's usually covered by the magnetic tip of my Volta charging cable (that's one of those "MagSafe-like" cables where the actual plug breaks off from the cable if you pull it)
If I connect the phone to a USB hub, the hub's ports usually light up when a device is connected. The phone does not trigger the port LED to light up.
Same behavior in System, Recovery and Download mode -> Computer doesn't even notice there's a new device, but device is charging (so apparently it notices there's something connected, just no data transfer)
Is my phone broken? Maybe a hardware problem with the USB-C port? Any advice on how to narrow down my problem?
Thanks in advance for any help or ideas you might have.
I had the same problem today but, in my case, it was the cable's connector.
Since you have multiple cables, it's unlikely they are the issue but it would be proof if you were able to check them with a different device. Also, ensure they aren't charge-only cables (I have a few of those; they lack data pins so devices don't slow-charge when they could rapid-charge instead).
You checked in download mode, so that eliminates configuration issues with Android.
That's all I got; it does appear to be the phone's connector or the USB interface.
A hail Mary would be to stick a 2PS6IMG.zip onto an SD card and RUU it in case firmware is the problem.
I'm pretty sure my cables could be used for data transfer as well. I'll try to find a colleague with USB c phone to try that as well. (family has all iPhones and most of my regular meet friends have phones from the stone age)
The firmware thing could be hard to do. Apparently you can't modify the Cid from within the phone anymore (setprop ro.cid doesn't do anything like it did on old HTC phones, despite having S-OFFed the phone) and T-MOB101 (T-mobile - the German parent of all those other clones) firmware is a rare sight.
