automatic resending failed SMS messages? - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Hi there,
Relatively new to Windows Mobile - TP2 is my first WM phone since an HTC C500 smartphone (WM5?) a few years ago - so still learning the ropes.
One of the biggest issues I have had so far is with SMS. The Nokia would retry at intervals but the TP2 doesn't. It does have a popup that says it failed, but for some reason most of the time this seems to pop up behind the TouchFlo interface so I don't see that it's failed unless I go into the full 'See all messages' view.
This is especially a problem for me since my office is in a basement with two foot thick stone walls and a stone ceiling, so unless my phone is near the window the signal is zero..
Is there any way to make that work better, or an app that checks periodically for failed messages and resends? Searching, I see a lot of people asking but no solutions, so I'm guessing the same still applies now but figured it didn't hurt to check... Even making sure the fail message gets seen in front of TouchFlo would be better than nothing?
Steve.

It's kinda annoying... On my HD there is a retry option via the WinMo interface but for some reason HTC didn't add this to TouchFlo!

Synch problem
OK ...
Finally posting on this problem - hoping others have experienced it and can help with a solution. I have a T-Mobile Dash WM6.1 (though this problem happened with WM 5 and 6), synching to a Vista Machine (Windows Mobile Device Center). This has happened on multiple machines/setups and different Dashes.
Every so often (maybe twice a week), when I synch - I get the dreaded little red-x in the corner of the "synch center" icon in the task bar, indicating a problem. Activesynch in my dash says Attention Required: "There has been a change made on your server that requires you to re-synchronize all items on your device ..."
Ugh. First - this takes a long time. Second - I lose my speed-dial and voice tags for my contacts. All a pain in the a**.
For months, I have been trying to figure out the rhyme or reason for this. It's happened with freshly booted PC and Dash. It's happened when nothing significant has occured (changes, disruptions) ... I've tried different bluetooth ports, wires (trying anything)
The closest thing I can think of is that it happens when I modify a contact, but I am grasping at straws.
Has anyone experienced this, and is there a solution?
Thanks!
Been there...
I've had that kind of problem when I tried to sync my outlook e-mails into my device, tried lots of things ("disable advanced USB connection" is one of the most famous suggestions) but what ultimately work for me was giving up on syncing my outlook e-mails and having my pop mail accounts setup on the device and downloading them every so often to keep it up to date with my outlook...
Anyways, try googleing for the error number or the phrase you get in the error box between "". But don't get your hopes too high tough: the problem is well documented and very spoken of but M$ doesn't seem to care much about it to come up with a solution (not even an official response, if my recollection is not mistaken).
Well, good luck and cheers.
Well, Synching outlook emails is the lowest of my priorities. Synching appointments, tasks and contacts are more important. Thanks anyway.
Thanks for your suggestion that I try to use google to find the error message. I never thought of that. Google. Are they a new startup?
; )

Slowliness of Sense in teh handling of SMS & Contacts

I may be kind f an exception and probably very few people are in my case, however I'd like to know if anybody has fuond a solution
I have more than 1,000 contacts and over 15,000 SMS. Yeah I know it's a lot but I dotn wnat to archive my SMS and I need my contacts
It was very well handled on my Hermes with Manilla 2D (Everything was quick, responsive, etc...)
With Sense, from the original one with Win 6.1 at delivery of the phone, up to Sense 2.1 and now 2.5 every upgrade has made the management of contacts and SMS slower and slower (To the extent I sometimes have to wait a minute obetween 2 operation, it's just laughable for all friends who have iphones, Nokias, etc...)
Simply put, whenever leaving a conversation within my SMS list (hitting the back button in Win 6.5.3) I have to wait a looong time. Similarly when leaving a contact and going back to the main list or clicking on a contact in the main list. When viewing a contact, clicking on the tab for conversations is also really really slow
I guess it has a lot to do with the integration at the contacts level of the different elements (Facebook, conversations, etc...) an dif I had to take a bet it would be the link to SMSs
It's making me all the more pissed off that old Manilla versions work perfectly and handle thsi very smoothly
So my question are:
1. has someone found a way to speed up the SMS application (or using another SMS application that is faster, typically the "Good old one" from pevious Manilla versions ?
2. Is there somewhere a cache or a buffer that I could increase allowing a smoother operation of the SMS application
3. Has someone managed to disable the tab (or the link) pointing on a contact to the conversations with this contact ?
Thanks a lot for your ideas & suggestions
Seriously? You NEED to keep 15,000 SMS? Just get a grip and delete them. You'd be amazed at the performance gains from just that.

I do not doubt it will be faster but I'd like to keep them
My poiunt is wioth WM6.1 and Manilla 2D it was impressively FAST on an old Hermes !
this is just a problem with win 6.5 ive been battling this for a while now. it seems its something to do with the threading and the way it indexes through the messages. if you disable threaded messages, there is no doubt you problem will go away. the problem seems to get worse with the more messages you have.
Jeyo mobile extender
Use Jeyo Mobile Extender for Windows Outlook and save all the sms on your pc. Keep less than 100o on your WM device and enjoy.
Jeyo helps you to see them date wise, sorted and sending from PC itself.

I dont wanna give up having them on my phone
Especially since my old HTC handles them properly
The Sense 2.5 Messaging app is slow even when you have very few (like 15)text messages from a single contact. When I reply to someboday it takes like 5 or more seconds depending on the number of messages just for the input box to take focus. The speed of the HTC text messaging app is pretty unbearable, to the point that I don't event like to text messaging that much anymore b/c of it's slowness.

It's actually with a ROM including the previous SMS client
But eyah anyway HTC has lots of work to do...
I really understand this problem becouse i also stryggel with it. My TyTn2 is alot faster and my TP2 and that is unacceptible i think.
Im totaly new in to this ROM flashing and is running original HTC 6.5 ROM. So my question is: will i overcome this problem with a flashed ROM or does these ROM just change the interface/looks on the phone or do they fix this root of the problem that is driving me totaly mad... My TyTn2 kicks ass over my TP2 in preformance. And i cant understand that out from the hardware specs... Even if i Run no Sens/Manilla(?!) an onely SPB mobile shell om mboth phones TyTn2 still kicks ass.
My TP 2 hav with Sense driving a memory use of 85-95% with no other programs running.

Yes agreed. It happened for me only on Win 6.5 and it seems to be re-indexing the whole conversation everytime (I was away on holidays, did a few tests and came back with the same conclusion)
By disabling the threaded SMS I solved the problme (And it handles very smoothly my 20,000 SMSs...)

I agree "Unacceptable" is the word that comes first to my mind (and very surprised not to see more threads about this)
It seems to be a WM 6.5 issue (I tried without Sense and I have the same issue). WM 6.1 was working perfectly for me
It might be an option somewhere in the registry. I will see if I can find it (Although I doubt it...)
That said it seems to get better with time, so I suppose it's rebuilding one way or the other the indexation bit by bit while you click on a conversation (It may very simply be that PIM backup doesn't save all the necessary information (which is normal since was created before threaded SMS clients were created) and WM 6.5 doesn't handle this as smoothly as WM6.1 did)
Lats complain (And for this I really don't know what's up, maybe it's linked to the SMS issue, since everything is linked on the contact page): opening a contact takes ages (When you have lots of them), and going back to the list of contacts from teh contact view takes... even longer
When I say ages I mean a minute or more
Totally was just going to post a thread similar to this. You simply beat me to it Yeah I noticed that for the Sense 2.1, when you go to the "messaging" tab it will say messaging but it will take like a minute to load the most recent message you received. I remember 6.1 it was instantaneous. I disabled the TF3D messaging to that it just has the windows threaded messaging but the loading time is still the same. Same goes for the contacts tab.
Look at my last post on this thread. Might be the same issue I had...

I had to cut down my contact list that syncs to the phone to around 4500 (from the 6800 that I want to use). It's sluggish but acceptable. I keep an old Treo 650 in my car with the full contact list for when I need to do a lookup.
My wishlist is about ActiveSync - I wish it was faster. It takes about an hour to reload my (reduced) contact list, and if I don't keep it under 4500 it gets exponentially slower for every contact over that.

I have only 1,100... Yes Activesync is slow like hell. BUT opening contacts or coming back to the main list from an opened contact is incredibly slow. More than annoying... It makes it unmanageable
I am not sure it's linked to the number of contacts though
What really sucks is old version of HTC's software dont have these shortcomings...

Latest ROM Update 2.07.401.1 WM 6.5 Sense 2.5 (Suggested Reg tweaks added on page 5)

It would seem that there are an awful lot of new threads on the subject, perhaps we could concentrate all the issues that we have with it (no matter which flavour) in one thread, can be this one or another, I don't mind but I think it should be done, would tidy things up a little.
Anyway, reason for starting this one is to try and collate all of the issues that we have with it, you never know, people in the right places may listen, but then again, pigs might fly, but it's the thought that counts! lol.
Generally
I like the update, I like using Sense 2.5 with the new twitter tab and the new programme buttons on the home screen, Facebook seems a little more integrated and I like that fact you have to dig a little deeper to get to WM.
However;
Home Screen
Weather animation is slow and laggy if;
a) You have more than 3 programmes added or;
b) More that one contact added
However, if the clock is minimised and all programme tabs visible, the animations are as good ad the demo and weather tab. Very annoying!!!!
Contacts
I like the new People shortcuts, but the fluidity of scrolling is rubbish, it's very jerky.
Open a contact and then tap edit, way too slow to open up and edit, perhaps 3-4 seconds. In real time, that's not a lot, but it is when using a phone. Then tap save, WTF! this takes even longer and it would appear to be even worse when you link your profile to FB, it's to the point of being painful.
This is just as bad if you tap on Menu and the edit.
Update and Events
Well, installed the 'hotfix' for FB Albums; guess what? It doesn't work, I still cannot seen any pictures in any album. I even wiped the ROM and started completeyl fresh to see if that was causing issues, but nope, still doesn't work.
I'm not overly happy that adding people to my favourites adds notes to each person and addes them to the HTC Favourites Group. We never needed that with Sense 2.1 so why now?
I thought that perhaps the issues I have with the Contacts is because I have over 700. Nope, doesn't seem to make a blind bit of difference how many or few you have, still get the same issues.
Messaging
I like the HTC SMS Client, it's starting to grow on me..... just. However,
When replying to a sms in landscape with the keyboard exposed, tap the menu softkey and then try and use the keyboard up and down arrows. Gues what, you cant! Very annoying.
I also cannot see how I can add the little pop up that tells me the sms has been sent. Now I know that most people on here don't like that, but I did, maybe I'm wired.
I also don't like it that the delivery report forms part of the treaded message as opposed to being separate - maybe that's mee being too fussy.
Calendar
I like the calendar it looks cleaner although the one big annoyance is the agenda view. No matter if I tap on the event from the home page or from the sliding menu at the bottom, the agenda view taks a good 5 seconds to load - outrageous! lol.
Twitter tab
Again, I like the twitter tab but, on a few occaisions, without any prior warning, all tweets disappear!?! hhmmmmm
Settings tab
For me, the Sound & Display menu is a little slow at showing but it's not too bad.
Other Issues
SOD - (Standby of Death) Only ever experienced this once and have no idea what caused it.
Radio 4.49.25.91 - Sometimes, when I travel through a bad signal area, the radio with not 'refresh' it's self and run through the signal search loop, it just sits there and sits there with the exclamation mark until I manually turn the radio off and back on again. Never had this issue with 4.49.25.17.
Finally, to ensure that the issues highlighted above were not due to remnants of previous ROM files hanging behind ofter flashing, I ran Task29 on the device to ensure that the ROM storage was clear and cleaned of any rubbish and freshly installed 2.07.401.1.
After all that, I genuinely do like this ROM and I guess these are just annoying niggles but you can only take so much. Am I going to revert back to WM 6.5 with Sense 2.1, only time will tell.
Agree with pretty much all you have said. Specifically
1 important to concentrate all all issues with this ROM in one thread
2 these are some key other threads on XDA that I think are relevant with issues from this ROM, at least can be referred to from here :

3 SOD is the biggest issue for me. Happens frequently during the day. HTC want me to send the device for repair, but I do not believe this to be a hardware issue. Phone has functioned perfectly since new in May 2009, SOD has only arisen on moving to this March 18th ROM
4 HTC posting data in our Contacts : terrible. This was certainly the cause of lock ups I had when first installing the ROM as that data got more and more corrupted.
5 I cannot get Facebook auto update working. I have about 1,000 contacts, about 50 of them synced to Facebook
6 Twitter does not fully update for me
7 Overall, when it works, I think Sense 2.5 is very good. I haven't had any issues with the SMS client which I think is a very good improvement over 2.1
8 as it stands, phone is unusable. I cannot rely on it for people to contact me as it is often SOD. A phone that people can't ring? That's not progress
9 Facebook albums - doesn't work, have never been able to get this working. Link to patch on HTC Europe website is broken, do HTC know?
Come on HTC, accept that you have an issue, agree to investigate and fix it.
Am in the UK, unlocked, unbranded phone, I use O2.
Calendar
The slowness in the Agenda seems to be negatively influenced by having all-day, and/or recurring appointments.
One thing I noticed is that when editing a single occurrence of an recurring appointment, you can change the time, but not the date of the occurrence (which is possible in the default client).
Messaging
Although I like the messaging app, it takes an awful long time to load one thread. Why didn't they implement this the same way as the default client (limited number of messages shown, with a link to "older messages")?
Other issues
Memory usage is ok after a soft reset (around 50%), but after a day of use it easily reaches 75-80%, even with all programs closed.

I concur with that. That's going to be a bit of a problem for me as I have several re-ocurring appointments.

I have the same issues you have. In addition my speakerphone function doesn't work most of the time. I have to turn it of and back on again and sometimes even redial.

Personally, I haven't noticed any difference with previous ROM's in this respect.
Hmm. Seems after a soft reset file activity is better now.
Wow, editing favorite contacts is really slow. I added a few lines to the notes of one of my favorites, and it took literally 5 minutes to get back to the Home screen.
For me it helped reflashing the ROM; flash the Sense 2.5 ROM and then immediately flash it again. Made it slightly more responsive. Other than that, I have the same issues as you do.
Contacted HTC about it and they told me UPS should pick up the phone since it's a hardware problem... Yeah right.
For me the most annoying part is the speaker phone issue, annoying when ppl can't hear me.
I've contacted support through HTC's website. I've putted in 4 problems and got an awnser on 2.
The speaker problem is a hardware failure according to the support desk. Such a nonsens!
This ROM is broken and they should fix it!

They told me that as well, wanted me to ship them the phone by UPS since it was a hardware problem... even though I told them lots of others have that problem with 2.5 and that it was JUST FINE before upgrading.
Found errors and one worth to add, too.
Error - Calendar:
I've tried to insert a birthday reminder in July 20th, and set it up for "ever July 20th" but i wont listet in July, the reason is, its added in april, i think its the current Month, seems to like an variableerror or an programmingerror. Defently worth to fix.
Worth to add - General / Shortlinks:
A shortlink to settingstab/menu, its annoying to have 5 tabs to access the real options + the loading time of the differnt tabs/menus.
Optional - Found something helpful - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=285366
Very worth to add - Onlinerules (maybe there is a programm that provides this):
It's annoying when i at home that, in the second i tab on the power button my w-lan and bei umtsmodule begins to initiate simultanly an internet connection, there could be some rule, w-lan before umts or something, the device got A-GPS, maybe set a home zone where the UMTS lets the w-lan the higher priority and get into the internet. But i've always use the shortcut FN+Commandcenter(rightkey) to deactivate the UMTS, because i doenst recognize that the wlan is 5 times faster.
Maybe we could all errors to the first post, for a better overview.

Find Duttys Task Manager for Leo, install and it should work, but, it cuoldnt close all apps(opera, AS,etc) so you have to check it with builtin task manager from time to time to really close them.

Completely agree with all in the above post, especially the SOD which is completely random on my device which is only 3 weeks old (bought from clove and shipped with the latest official HTC ROM) I have been naggin my boss to buy me a tp2 for months as my tytn2 was becoming unreliable and now i find the tp2 even worse, even though im a die hard HTC fan i fear i might have to consider sending the device back and getting a blackberry as this is totally unacceptable for a business tool. Have also reported the issue to HTC to which i got a reply of "try a hard reset" which isnt very good when the device was only 4days old at the time.

That your new phone is SOD'ing is very bad news indeed. Mine is heading back to HTC tomorrow, quite why I don't know as categorically the issues are with the March 18th ROM. Have simply lost the will to live in corresponding with HTC's "technical support".
Technical support, my arse.
Right - let us try and be constructive.
My TP2 which works flawlessly with ROM's up to March 18th
It has only ever had HTC stock ROM's
it was bought unlocked and unbranded from Clove in May 2009. I am on O2
It has a 6 Gb Micro SD card
I have never used HardSPL
I use Commontime mSuite software to link the TP2 with our Lotus Notes installation, syncing Contacts, email and calendar
even without installing any software whatsoever on top of March 18th ROM I have had SOD
Sense 2.5 places unauthorised (by me!) data in the Comments field of your contacts with details of Facebook & favourites Sense entries. This data gets appended to the Comments field in Lotus Notes and renders that field corrupted.
In the 10 months between May 2009 and March 2010, I never had a single SOD incident. Since the March 18th ROM, I would get at least 6 SOD's per day. I do not feel that I am being Sherlock Holmes by suggesting that the SOD issue is linked exclusively to the March 18th ROM.
In sheer frustration and because I actually need to use the TP2, I recently reverted to the previous ROM. No SOD's.
Anyway, all you SOD'ers out there (or is it just me), what is the precise make up of your TP2, can we find anything in common?

SMS-like or SMS replacement software options

My wife and I both now have WM phones (mine is a Tilt 2, hers a Pure) and we don't want to spend money on text messages to each other, since each text message would count twice... once for her receiving and once for me sending. (on a pay per use plan it would be $0.40 each!).
I was looking for other options. Push email is o.k. but often times there can be a minute or more delay, and my early tests of push gmail are not producing any confidence that it would push reliably.
So then I was thinking IM. It looks like IM programs would be battery hogs, and have to stay running in the background, and could easily be accidentally closed. Also, when the phone goes to sleep it seems like they then switch you to "offline".
So am I missing something? What are my sms like, non sms options?
Also does anyone have any small programs that would set up a auto-soft reset on a repeating schedule, it would be great if I could start the morning with a fresh phone. Thanks.

Also does anyone have any small programs that would set up a auto-soft reset on a repeating schedule, it would be great if I could start the morning with a fresh phone. Thanks.

Yes, any non-sms messaging app for your phone would obviously use data (3G or EDGE connection) to communicate, and would need to be left on all the time to be able to receive incoming messages and notify you in real-time...so battery drain would be in direct proportion to that.
The best solution I've ever seen for that is Palringo, a free IM-integrator app that can connect you through most of the common IM networks (yahoo, AIM, Google talk, etc), or just direct through it's own (if I remember correctly)...meaning that as long as you and she both have the palringo client installed, you don't necessarily have to use any of those services to be able to IM each other. It's also free, and I seem to recall that it can be set (but isn't by default) to stay connected even when the phone goes to sleep, but don't quote me on that part.
It would be great if one of these programs had a "listening" service that would run in the background and then notify you of the "call" similar to an email.
I have seen a few online, (my research has just begun) that indicates "push notifications". Sound interesting, the data connection would remain active all the time that does not bother me.
I seem to have lost the setting to switch the "x" button from close to minimize. That would solve the issue with accidental closing the program. It would have to be managed via the task manager.. no biggy.. and then if I can find a soft reset scheduler it would keep the open programs from overwhelming the phone.

it's the other way around. default for winmo is minimize, there is
an htc bundled app called taskman. it's in settings - task manager which is making apps close when you click X
plenty of other apps can change that too
and then if I can find a soft reset scheduler it would keep the open programs from overwhelming the phone.

SMS/MMS Texting lag

I don't know either its my phone that lags or the rom, but recently after installing Energy rom, going into sms mode to send a text to someone takes at least 10 seconds. Is there a fix for this? Or is it my phone's problem
I've read that it's got something to do with WinMo 6.5. I don't have in depth knowledge of the topic myself. All I can tell you from my personal experience is that I've seen the same lag ever since I got off of the stock Sprint 6.1 ROM. (Been using variations of MightyRom ever since). It aggravates the hell out of me.
I bought this phone because, at the time, it was the best Windows Mobile phone on the market. If this was the best, I'd hate to see the worst. It doesn't even do simple BS like SMS as well as my old throw-away LG dumbphone did. Don't even get me started on the lagginess, freeze-ups and other pains of the 'advanced' functions...
Yeah with my TP2 whenever I open a text convo, do my thing, then exit.. it takes atleast 10-15 seconds to un-freeze into the All Messages window.. tried clearing the ram, but still nothing..
This is horrible! I recently started having this problem, if you have a really long text message conversation, the phone becomes completely un******* usable. I threw mine out the window of my truck today I was so aggravated. Mine has gotten to the point that you have to pull the battery out, or wait 5-10 minutes after you close out the text messaging thread. I'm getting an Evo - I really want to stay on TP2 but if I cant even text message, this phone/winmo 6.5 is totally junk. I'm hoping someone has a fix or tweak for this.
The only solution is to purge your messages, Arcsoft likes to load up all the messages before allowing you to do anything, sucking up alot of RAM and CPU, so less messages = less work, you could also try the classic text messaging (non threaded), the new overclock app kinda helps with this stuff. And the HTC messaging client as a last resort. the structure of the app is different and it doesnt take quite as long to load the messages, and it unloads itself much quicker than arcsoft in my experience.
I try to not to keep any SMS older than 2 weeks. I'm not one of these SMS crack-junkies that likes to keep 20k messages on their phone. I only regularly text maybe 4-5 people, so I never have more than a couple hundred messages on my phone at any given time.
I'd actually delete them sooner, but there's no decent app to purge based on message age. SMSPurger is a slow, buggy piece of junk, and nobody else seems to have written an alternative.
That brings me back to my old LG phone. It had a function where it would auto delete the oldest message once the combined sent/received list hit 300(?) messages. New message comes in, oldest one gets deleted. Why is it my WinMo superphone can't do something this simple?
If the issue is that you want an auto delete program, then the reasoning is that No one like to develop for WinMo, and the SMS has kind of always been an issue on the Professional Version, I had no problems with the SMS on my first WinMo device, the Moto Q9h (kinda miss it). I have had SMS issues on all 4 of my PPCs LG CT810 (incite) hTC Raphael (Touch Pro), Rhodium 210 (Touch Pro 2) and Rhodium 300 (Tilt 2). Best solution I have had, purchase Sms-chat if you really like your texting, It was lag free, and worked 100%, the only thing that I didnt like was the cheesy iPhone rip off. The main reason I still get WinMo is because I HATE apple. - but anyway, your issue is suffered by many, and it might take a while to solve.
hi
Just install the fix from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=664915
I did it and it solved problems with sms in manila 2.5- no need to purge or delete long conversations.
