There are a few theads about this issue already discussed on Hermes forum. Go search there, there are a few solutions, the cause has been narrowed down to the d-pad pc-board.
Hard Reset will do the trick
You need to hard reset the device. Shutdown the PDA completely. Than keep pressing simulteneously both upper buttons on the action button & press the reset hole with the help of the stylus.

soft reset is possible.. but doesnt do anything.
*edit did a hard reset
for the newbies like myself. a hard reset can be done by pushing the two softkey buttons (right and left) [the ones right below the touchscreen) and the soft reset button. follow on screen confirmation and u have a clean start again.

What happens when you take away the battery and plug it again.

Taken from : http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Artemis_Resets
To do a hard reset.
Press both soft keys and insert stylus into soft reset button and press.
Release the soft reset button and keep pressing the soft keys.
When the "This operation will delete all your personal data, to manufacturer default" appears on screen.
Press Green call button to restore manufacturer default, or press other keys to cancel.
The bootloader is invoked by pressing down the Power and Voicedialer buttons simultaneously, and using the stylus at the same time to press the RESET button at the left side. Continue pressing the two buttons for a few seconds after pressing and releasing the reset button until the bootloader screen appears.

I hope that this will be able to help someone else who searched as much as I did but was still unable to enter bootloader.
My phone is a CDMA Telus Diamond, pretty much one of the first ones in 'public hands' in the Kitchener/waterloo/cambridge area.
I had uploaded The Mighty Rom, and it worked fine for a few days then I would have to reset often, then the screen stuck and it wouldn't turn off, then when I reset the device it wouldn't get past the screen with the red writing at the bottom. I tried everything to get it into bootloader... then I was just playing around with it now and I pulled the battery and put it back in (device is off). held in the volume down button (on the side), then pressed and held the stylus in the reset button. While those two were pressed, I pressed the power button (on top). voila... tri-color screen!
I know there are lots of threads on this, but I hope this will help someone in the same situation I was in.
Thanks, but it's in the wiki >.>
what I read in the wiki was to hold in volume down and the action button, then reset. That didn't work for me... many many times.
Really? Oh. I'm sorry then I mean I think that's what I thought I had read in the diamond and raphael wiki and I've been doing that so I didn't exactly remember.
Thank you, I had this same problem with my HTC Touch PRO (CDMA) Pressing the power button on the top did the trick!
Hi.....
I have an wm6 xda with a broken mail button and I'm trying to hard reset it for upgrading. Is there a possible way to do the upgrade with the button while using windows 7 (using WMDC) or I need XP to do it.
Another problem with my BA is
1. If I slide it up, the screen will be distorted and will fade to white.... (Is this a Hardware problem??)
2. My stylus always point is not accurate in one point (the right side).
Are you trying to do the hard reset before or after you flash the ROM? You enter the bootloader first(Record + Power + Reset) Then flash it. Then after its done you press power + record. That should be it. You only need the mail button to do a wm6 hard reset without upgrading the ROM
1. That sounds like a hardware problem
2. Maybe try aligning your screen. If that doesn't help it could also be a hardware problem. How much is it off by?
that is not true, after upgrading you need to hard reset the device, and for that you need the mail button, because after you upgraded and entered the hard reset menu by pressing power+reset+record+camera you set the options right by flipping them all, using the camera and record buttons and then confirm your choice by pressing the mail button.
but i agree about the other problems:
screen - hardware issue
touch - align screen
just my 2 cents
