GPS Tweaking - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Hi all,
I've noticed that my TT7 still ran a little behind with occasional lag as per the Raphael (but nowhere near as bad)
Thought I would start a new thread for those of thus that experience this to list there tweaks/changes and radio versions so that we can keep track of this.
When posting, please state
Radio Stack currently using
Navigation software and version
Tweaks applied.
Mine are as follows
Rom Version : 1.19.401.0 (51489) WWE
Radio Stack : 3.44.25.27
Protocol Version : 61.25t.25.19U
Nav System : TT 7.910.9185
Tweaks applied.
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver\
Deleted Data for current and old log files
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver\Drivers\
InputBufferSize dropped to 1024 (DEC)
OutputBufferSize dropped to 1024 (DEC)
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver\Drivers\GPSOneDevice\
PollInterval dropped to 100 (DEC) this is MilliSeconds
Hope this helps others.
Cheers,
Beasty

Thanks! Will definitely try these once I get the chance to actually test the GPS while moving about, at least if it seems there's still some GPS-lag in this shiny-new-monster-of-a-phone

I have added the above info to the Wiki, as this thread will soon dissappear into the ether.
The Rhodium forums are starting to pick up pace now
Cheers,
Beasty

How did your tweaks improve the lag on the tp2 ?
I did not tweak yet. TOMTOM 7 runs reasonably... the lag in IGO can be up to 40 metres. Will your tweaks improve IGO also ( and google maps for example )??
Regards

It should work for any Nav app, as the reg entries modify the intermediate MS driver config.
Reducing the buffer sizes should reduce lag, I was 10 metres behind actual location on stock settings and am now approx 2 metres to spot on depending on speed and road type. (ie twisty country lanes not as accurate as straight roads)
Cheers,
Beasty

this may saound really stupid but what do you actually mean by
Deleted Data for current and old log files
Click to collapse
do you mean delete the entries entirely in the registry or or delete the valuse of the entery or empty the files they point to. Sorry for being stupid

i'm stupid too .... i also like to know

everybody will stuck with stoopidity if they just waiting for people feed them. how about a few secs to search & discover the registry key path.
there are two registry strings under the given key.
"CurrentLogFile"=""
and
"OldLogFile"=""
btw this is a known hack for raphael & kaiser also but may not needed with different gps apps.

EEEEEH ..... if you would read correctly ... you should have figured out that was not the question.
Offcourse I have found the entries. The question was about what to do with them:
1) deleted the complete registry key
2) delete the value \windows\gpslogfile.txt

i read correctly even my english is not perfect
shown above is what it should be.

Hi Monx,
Nice to see you here.
I was a big fan of yours in Raphael
Will you be developing for Rhodium too?
Cheers,
Beasty

Hi friend, sure (but still too early & hspl still not available yet). Stock ROM is just fine as there are many improvements & more user friendly. Thanks.

A. With Advanced config nel menu GPS
disable A-GPS
disable GPS logging
logfile name must be empty
old logfile name must be empty
maximum size of logfile must be 0
delete the files :
\windows\GPSLogFile.txt and \windows\GPSLogFileBack.txt
With those changes car usage will be quite perfect
B. Then edit registry
Under: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver\
Drivers\GpsOneDevice\PollInterval -> 100 (default is 1000)
Drivers\InputBufferSize -> 512 (default is 4096)
Drivers\OutputBufferSize -> 512 (default is 4096)
Drivers\SleepOnNoData -> 100 (default is 1000)
Multiplexer\MaxBufferSize -> 512 (by default not present, you have to create it)
With those tweaks pedestrian usage will be much better but not perfect.
I NEVER had a faster fix . even after a reset it won't take more then 10 secs to get a good signal in tomtom / igo 8 / google maps. Huge improvement
I noticed the position is a bit of in google maps but i'm testing from my window ( so not sure how it is with movement ). I will test that tomorrow in my car.

@dgh
mate, sorry to ask. how about QuickGPS. Have valid data or u didnt update it? It helps me a lot to get fix with Garmin Mobile XT & Mapking R12 Diamond edition (just for info).

sure i have downloaded that. the problem was however that the fix (after reset ) could take rather long ( well not as long as my tytn 2 .... so whats long )
after the tweak the thing that takes longest is to start the gps (tomtom says no gps for a few secs ) . when the gps came online i have almost an instant fix.

My variant of LVSW's aku .3 ROM

Here's a tweaked developer version of lvsw's CE 5.2.1413 Build 17913.0.3.0 ROM
note: this ROM is an advanced graft containing XIP components from Hermes, Universal and Wizard WM6 builds and as such is unique to XDA Developers. M$ has not released these components all in one place for Hermes yet. Some confusion has come up surrounding this when Shadowmite noticed that coredll.dll was reporting a different CE build than what was being shown in settings->about. Its no fake. This Rom's Universal base components are reporting CE 5.2.1413 there.
Now to my stuff. I'm an imgfs chef, so I've improved the GUI a bit...
v1.0 of this ROM includes:
Everything in lvsw's base ROM
GLYPHCACHE limt re-optimized at 32,768
Mobile Office 2K7
My ATI Imageon patch cooked in
HTC X-Button v1.5 cooked into the base ROM
Windows Live cooked into the base ROM
4MB Paging File
Big Storage
A2DP optimized for highest Fidelity (A2DP patch is not included).
additional apps: GSFinder+, DotFred's Taskmgr, PHM Regedit, SIPChange, Austinboy's Fieldtest
VoIP optimizatons: dialplan normalized for US calling (default areacode is 262 on 7 digit calls), connect over 3G as well as WiFi enabled
Live Search today plugin is set to use Google and works just fine when spaces are part of the search term
can toggle the phone skin between Video and Non-video modes using lsvw's TweakUI program
There are massive Bluetooth stack improvements in the build. The "Invalid URL" issue when streaming music over 3G has been fixed. And, you really can stream audio from 3G to A2DP while in powersave mode on this ROM.
As always, because its targeted at developers, this version has the Extrom hidden and all customizations are disabled on initial start.
Free storage memory is about 49MB and free program memory is 29MB. Displayed Today screen items have been reduced and re-ordered in this manner (note: the additional plugins are still present, just unchecked in Today settings):
Date
Live Search
Internet Calling
Owner Info
Email messages
Appointments
The installer will also upgrade your splash screens to the "Sun Rising over the earth" HTC theme from page 1. Your Radio, IPL and SPL will remain unchanged. This is a SSPL only installer so you must be connected with ActiveSync. Then, just execute and it'll take about 5 minutes to install. Vista users: be sure to check out this guide for how to make SSPL installers work on your version of Windows.
Download v1.0 now from RapidShare.
High speed download from Chamelion
v1.0 Release Notes (check back here periodically for updates)
Here are the known issues:
when you delete the last note in OneNote it doesn't refresh the list and the note appears to not be deleted until you restart OneNote again.
On the Today screen, X-Box changes the font on SPB weather and SPB Time to Black (only happens if "Enable Today X button" is selected). SPB has posted a fix for SPBWeather here
Unable to add programs to the X-Box exclusive list without reghacks. Fixed! Kudos to vp3G for uncovering the fix. Download the attached cab and be sure to install to your device if asked. This fix will not work if installed to your storage card
However, if you do install the cab, the newly enabled exclusive feature has quirks too: If you actually use this feature by tapping on an app in the Running Programs list, xbutton doesn't restore its icon properly on the today screen. You need to tap start->today to get it to display again.
If only the "Enable the X button to end running programs" option is checked int X-Button, the today screen won't refresh when you change the items unless you SR. The today items work normally if any other combination is selected in the button tab.
My BMW bluetooth handsfree system works great with this version. Very stable and better speaker volume too. Parrot Car Kit owners report varying degrees of success. The Parrot Rhythm 'n Blue system works flawlessly. Nothing yet on Audi handsfree.
Breaking A2DP News!
(Kudos to hardcore on this)
Joint Stereo is properly implemented in this ROM. If your headset supports Joint Stereo, try using lvsw's TweakUI program to set the following values:
JointStereo = 1
CurrentBitPool = 86
MaxBitPool = 86
Jaw dropping audio! Downside is that I get an occasional skip with these settings. YMMV for sure. Try the joint stereo setting first then tweak away at the bitpool settings. Out of the box, this ROM is set to automatically go to 70 if it can.
note: If your headset doesn't support Joint Stereo you won't be able to connect after applying these settings.
RE: 3G streaming in powersave mode.
The only application I've found that can do this so far is GreenSoftware's Freeware GSPlayer. It can also play mp3's in powersave mode.
Pretty fast Sleuth!
I have tried to download but the file has been deleted...
Need to wait a bit I guess!
thanks for re-cooking LSVW!
still uploading: link will be valid in about 15 minutes...
Thanks Sleuth!
upload complete
thank you sir!
Crap... this one's missing the ATI fix.... link deleted, I'll have the fixed ROM up in about 30min...
No problem Sleuth, take your time!
Fixed and tested. Page 1 link restored. I'm outta here....
Any non rapidshare llinks please!!!! Thanks..
HIGH SPEED HTTP MIRROR
thanks for this one!
lvsw and yourself are doing great jobs!
I'll report back soon with my judgement
a complete ROM was made even better..Thank you..
Does this have the cyberon vc and if so can it be uninstalled via the remove programs?
*fingers crossed*
masterful creation refined by the master himself.. good job sleuth
Great job Sleuth!
Typically I'm not one to post silly "Great Job"'s but this one is a great job! Very stable and responsive, with obvious attention to detail.
Extended ROM
Sleuth, I see some extended ROM files, I assume they are yours (?): Windows Live, X-Button, mHub-player, ..
You already included these files in your ROM, why add them to the extended ROM? (I know they aren't automatically installed after a hardreset.)
By the way: love it, seems fast and stabile and much free memory.
Perhaps for the next version also a tweak like HTweakC?
Any way of tidying up the 3G icon?
Have only been able to find the Black Clean Icon Patch but this doesn't seem to work with this release.
Apart from this minor cosmetic niggle, this is a very slick rom.
Well done & thanks Sleuth
Sleuth, great ROM.
I love the VoIP optimized part. By the way, just to share my settings: I use my own Asterisk box to get calls through and I added this rule on the dial-plan:
<!-- Universal rules -->
<rule pattern="(\d+)" dial="sip:\[email protected]$host$" display="\1" transfer="sip:\[email protected]$host$" />
In my phonebook, I have all the number updated as "+<country>-<TEL>". It works fine for normal wireless call with t-mobile and cingular, and the asterisk know what to do with the '+'.

[Updated 1/15/08] Pandora Naked 6a ROM

NOTHING IS EVER FINAL!!!
Here's my Naked 6 ROM with the following:
Windows Mobile 6 Professional CE OS 5.2.1620 Build 18128.0.4.4
Camera 4.0 build 28276
Arcsoft MMS 4.2.8.1
Internet Sharing
10 Button Black Comm Manager
Comm Manager Vibe Toggle
PreConfig launches SetHSDPA & SetAccousticParameters.
Points to note:
6.0 Does not include the scroll speed increase. See post 168 for the registry changes.
Button 5 is mapped and ready to use / PTT is disabled
The Big Storage versions use Bepe's Big Storage OS.nb/XIP v3.60 and is based on a stripped version of austinsnyc Lite ROM (with permission - thanks dude!) - which was from the original 3.62 AT&T release.
The non big storage roms use the 3.62.3 base OS.nb/XIP.
It does not launch extended ROM or storage card installations, nor does it include a radio, IPL/SPL, splash screens, extended rom, or anything else. JUST THE OS.
Memory Details:
W/Big Storage
Storage Free: 78.7
Program Free: 31.10
(Launcher and poutlook.lnk removed from /Windows/Startup - nothing installed, after reset/fully rebooted and all programs killed)
I would recommend you install the .NET Framework after flashing, as I did not include 2.0 or 3.5 in the base and some programs you install / use may require it to work. See the next post for links / downloads.
Why? I wanted a super stripped and fast base to add my cabs to with a crapload of storage. I don't have the time to keep tweaking my custom rom configuration, so this will give me the most flexibility and performance.

Using KarhU's stats, I put together this build based on performance statistics. It's clean and fast - and should run as fast (if not faster) as the best one's out there.
Here's KarhU's great thread on benchmarking. I've learned a lot from his work - it's an excellent asset for tuning
KarhU's Benchmarking Thread
Note too that I didn't include the .rgu files. Please use the kitchen if you want to use the components / build your own.
Known Issues / Fixes:

I sure hope this is the last rev, I gotta get the laundry folded and the house vacuumed before the wife really gets pissed
As long as I didn't re-introduce the PIE issue, I'm pretty solid this is a good setup. Everyone's feedback on 4U went into it. The only outstanding question is the data auto-disconnect, but I don't think that'll warrent a rev at this point.
Minor bug/weird feature - comm manager button is vacant - without a shortcut - is it like this by design?

you are too fast for me dude
but after cooking my prefered files to it, i really have to say that its really fast!
Just wanted to download Naked 4U and again a new ROM!
Seems to get better and better and better until perfect
Final release posted. I'm gonna go play Halo 3
On that note, anyone have any microsoft points they want to donate? I need that new map pack
Hi mattk_r
First: great job! Again!
Sec: I have a question. I was looking for solution, but I found only not 100% working.
When i try to replay to sms, new window comes a little bit scrolled down - I don's see recipient.
Disabling D-pad navigation is not working. Its making it worse.
So here is my question: Is this behaviour is normal in this Build? If not, is there some reg/hack that can fix it?
Thank You.

This is normal as i know it. It places the cursor at the top of the text field at the top of the screen. I presume it expects that you know who you replied to, and want to see the data entry area.
I imagine there may be some scroll setting that effects where the screen is displayed, but I haven't seen it before.
Sweet - thanks for the kitchen rom - let the cooking begin (que evil laughter!)
Any feedback on audio quality? I noticed that it's pretty loud, but the setacousticparameters seems to run well on initial boot.
I did notice that Audio Manager isn't fully happy with .NETFX 3.5. It runs perfectly with 2.0, and KarhU found there isn't any speed difference between the two. I'd recommend just using 2.0 for now, unless you install an application that was developed in VS2k8 with dependencies to 3.5.
I also noticed that syncing music from Windows Medial Player in XP messed up the audio - kind of like "skipping". Copying the music directly to the SD card and updating the libarary worked perfectly. Because the syncing didn't work before, this is the first time I've ever tried to use WMP. I'm curious if this is a typical behavior of WMP and the WM on the phone. I'll have to do some digging.
Also - the picture of the 3G dialpad in the first post doesn't show the up/down arrows on the smartdialer. I didn't reflash to get the pic - rather just installed the cab - which in this scenario doesn't have the arrows. The actual 3G ROM looks much better and the smartdialer is complete.
Button 3
Noticed Pre-Final 5 & Final 5 button 3 are not mapped to the Communication Manager. Under settings, I'm unable to select Comm Manager from the drop down.
Of course this could be something I've done, since flashing the phone about 10 times in the last 24hrs

"Pre-Final" did have that problem, but the final should not - as it's what's on my phone now. If you can, try a fresh download and see if the solution is fixed.

I discovered a problem with autocomplete words, even if autocomplete is deactivated, in somme programs is still on (opera,Word,etc..) .The real problem is that the autocomplete is in chinese(i think) because after 2-3 leters they are transforming in a little square, i can't find a solution to stop this!
Thank you Mr. pawaa

I also need your feedback on this wm6.1 rom, are you facing any problem in it ?
I searched a bit on the internet bit i didn't find any cab i believed that is by default in WM6.1 but i see that i am wrong.Thank for answering my question!!! Can you recomend me an link or a book about Windows mobile programing!
I had a problem with the previous version (i discovered today) In the place of my network name (Orange) appears just "home network " and when sommeone calling me is not doing anything, on the caller phone is like is ringing but i don't answer. After i connected PDAL to pc it suddenly appears 2 missed calls and the name of the network is as should be.Maybe is because that my battery was under 25% or sommething like that.Unfortunatlly i was on work yesterday and didn't installed yet the new rom,Now my phone is charging and i barrely wait to be 50% to put this new rom.I will put my feedback here about this .

[SOLVED] Gwes.exe leak

Guys, i'm going mad.
Since i have iPhoneToday installed (with many icons, i admit), my GWES.exe (WM 6.5, ROM NextOS 1.2)raises quickly to 20Mb memory usage. And then, as soon as it reaches 20 megs, HTC MEnu Enhancement stops working leaving me with an unusable system (breaking HTC Menu results in apps not showing at all their menus). CleanRam usually takes it back to 13mb, but i have to run CleanRam about every time i run an app (and that's bad).
For what i know, processes should have a 32mb space, so my questions:
- why the hell my GWES kills HTC Menu at 20mb?
- is there a way to give GWES more memory to operate? (i've tried to reduce the payload uninstalling topbar and gaining 3 mb, but it's not enough).
- i've seen there was an old patched GWES floating around for and old problem of HTC enlarged menus working bad: is there something similar for newer GWES's?
-as alternative: is there a way to flush GWES when it reaches, to say, 19mb, so that it doesn't reach 20mb limit and breaks HTC menu?
Thanks
I found this topic via the search button because I have the same problem with Dutty Leo R5.
When softresetting the phone the application gwes.exe (Graphical Windowing and Event System) takes about 15-16MB, thats absolutely OK.
Now after some time using lockscreen and some other apps the application gwes.exe grows up to 27MB. These 27MB seem to be a magic number, because when gwes.exe reaches 27MB the menus are getting very ugly. (ill try to find a screenshot to explain what I mean)
Somehow for you its 20MB, for me it was ~27MN.
After some more time gwes.exe takes more than 30MB and then it happens! Alot menus arent beeing displayed at all! Also some other applications dont start at all or better dont display a single picture or text...
No1 an idea what we can do with this gwes.exe thingy?
Since there were no answers, I have solved this problem myself long time ago.
You can use the attached cab: it will install another GWES.exe and GWES.exe.0410.mui version, that uses much less memory (at startup now i have 12 mb WITH 5 megs of iPhoneToday icons, it means 7-8 megs if you don't use it).
Of course, if you haven't italian ROM, remember to rename the GWES.exe.0410.mui accordingly to your ROM
BEWARE! Installing a wrong GWES version could lead you to hard reset!!!
So, install at your risk. This is only for WM 6.5!!!

It depends on how you read it: i use sktools, that reads different, for example, from memmaid, since it splits size and heap

if you cannot install it in any way, the only solution is to copy the files manually (attached for your convenience):
1- with resco explorer or total commander go to \windows and rename gwes.exe to gwes.exe.bak and gwes.exe.0410.mui (or 409, or whatever is your country code) to gwes.exe.0410.mui.bak
1a- if you cannot rename, this means the files are in ROM, so no problem: go to 2
2- copy the new files to SD, and then again with resco or total, move (not copy: move) the new gews.exe and gwes.exe.0410.mui to \windows. (You'll be told "warning the files are in rom you can damage and blah blah": answer you want to overwrite).
3- import the .reg
4- soft reset
I was able to copy to device but my gwes.exe still shoots up to 25-27mb after locking the phone. I'm curious though after importing reg file it did not notify if it was successful. It just asked me if I wanted to import.

Maybe you already had this gwes version... I guess it depends on what is your rom. I still have 23016 buid and it works.

This is the normal behaviour. btw, the reg only disables magnifier (since this is a newer gwes with magnifier embedded).
may I know the origin of the gwes.exe file? which build was it taken from?
I am using 21869 build now and the gwes.exe still keep "expanding" after long usage of Garmin, Opera, etc, but the HTC Menu stays working even gwes.exe has expanded over 30MB.
By the way, I have also tried smaller Font cache size, fom 32k down to 8k and it does help to reduce gwes.exe size.

bbonzz Anti-GWES leak-EN.cab
Hi all
Has anybody tried bbonzz Anti-GWES leak-EN.cab on MS build 21854? If so, can you please post your results. I'd like to get gwes.exe down in size but I don't want to have to hard reset my device.
Thanks

I've came to this thread because I've the same problem and I've found that when GWES is near to the Windows CE process limit of 32MB some graphical intensive apps stop working.
I read the memory usage with memmaid, so it gives a mix of size and heap.
If an app creates a new DC and its asigned memory mapped bitmap for some graphics and does not release it, or create any kind of graphical objects and does not release them, it results in GWES memory leaks, and as soon as it reaches a memory usage near 32MB, if another app tres to create graphical objects, receive an error and cannot do it.
I've started my HD Leo Holy Gray R0 and GWES takes 15MB of RAM, but in my Diamond WM6.1 without Manila it take only 1.7 MB of RAM.
So there are three problems: Initial usage, badly written programs and new graphical intensive applications.
I'm the programmer of a graphical intensive commercial application. When some menu is opened, I need almost 3MB of GWES ram that I liberate as soon as the menu is closed. I've tried starting the app and the menu 50 times and closing it again and GWES have not increased its memory usage, so it can be done.
My advise: Try to identify the app that is leaking memory in your system and avoid it. Look for a replacement program that is well written.
Do I have found a solution?
I use a lot Resco explorer, that has a new look since WM6.5: the treeview control for folders is now more "expanded" and have bigger + and - simbols.
I don't like them so big, so investigating I've changed these two keys:
HKLM/System/GWE/CommCtrl/TreeViewPlusMinus to 18 (0x12)
HKLM/System/GWE/CommCtrl/ExtraItemSpace to 4
And not only it now shows the treeviews like before, but I've not got any problems with GWES since I did it.
Maybe there has been introduced memory leak on the treeview control functions when them have been modified to support this new style?
Good contribution, lets test it and report!
gwes.exe heap size is huge
I tried the tip above and my gwes.exe heap size did reduce by a couple of MB but at one point yesterday the process details (from SKTOOLS) for gwes.exe was over 100MB.
My phone's an HTC Touch Diamond 2 but wanted to include it for reference.
Name---- ---Size ----Heap Path----------------
gwes.exe 4247552 85132896 \Windows\gwes.exe
Would the tip above about replacing the gwes.exe be compatible with my phone too?

me too... after copying, my device hangs during reset. Gotta hard reset

ShareMemSize

In order to relase even more RAM, after having applied the NoPushInternet Cab, PPCGeeks suggested to set the reg key ShareMemSize to 0 (this key can be found at HKLM/Software/HTC/ResProxy). This worked for me very well on my TP2 with WinMo 6.1 and "old" TF3D 2.1.
After upgrading to WinMo 6.5 and the "new" HTC Sense 2.1 it does not work as well anymore. You can set this value to 0, but the key regenerates its old value every time after a soft reset. Between resets it works fine.
Does someone know a way/reg hack to keep the ShareMemSize value at 0 at all times?
It's worthwhile finding this out because my TP2 with WinMo 6.5 boots up with merely 40% of RAM usage. Without this tweak its about 48-50%.
regards, Kuzibri
nobody has an idea/suggestion?
is it safe to delete this key??
I suspect the CM_Guardian service is setting it back. I'd disable that service and see if it helps.
thanks for your answer, but where do I find this service and what does it do?
From Topaz thread :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=584288&page=1
it works with the official upgrade from HTC.
thanks, but is was me who "invented" this reg tweak and also found out, later, that this reg key regenerates itself over time, at least on the TP2. Don't know how this key behaves on other devices/
Just a FYI, don't know if it was this way before but I after installing your CAB as well as SSK TP2 Dynamic Resource Proxy.cab I found off PPG on my new TP2, I found this already set to 0 and I would assume is staying there.
No cooked ROM though.
But perhaps the SSK is doing this and might keep it that way on one?
Also to note, I do have HD Tweak installed with all it performance setting set to max though, perhaps that did it?

It is working fine with official WM6.5 - after dozens of soft-resets it is still in place.
The figures right after soft reset are as following: 187.41MB available in total, 61.24MB (thus 33%) allocated and 126.17MB free for applications.
I do use native WM6.5 interface without TouchFlo etc, unbranded European TP2.
I would agree then with colleagues arguing, there is registry protection mechanism applied and restoring it to its original state.
