HTC Touch Pro2 with WM 6.5? - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Windows Mobile 6.5 available with the HTC Touch Pro2?
When yes, is it possible to zoom websites in the IE like that?
I would LOVE it!

Yes, TP2 will come with an upgrade to 6.5. But when you first get it, it will still be 6.1.
Acer which is launching their new phone F900, comes with WM6.1 but it comes with IE6 and plays flash movies too. Don't know if TP2 will come with IE6 with it's 6.1 OS.

But it does come with Opera Mobile I think, which is better

It should come with a 6.1 ROM initially, with the (old) new version of Pocket IE, which is actually quite decent, although I'm sure that most people will still prefer Opera Mobile (also included for sure). Then, a 6.5 upgrade is guaranteed. Then, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay into the future, an upgrade to WM7 is expected (based on leaked AT&T documents).

That it didn't say on the review. So I guess not. I never used IE6, so I won't know which is better. Also, I think you can download Opera 9.5 Beta versions from Opera site.

That article is just referring to the date that is on the FORTRESS specs (the picture of the AT&T TP2 - Look at the bottom in red font).
Back in Feb, it was leaked by Motorola's CEO that WM7 was pushed back (likely to April 2010) due to the release of the Android.
Here are some more realistic dates for you to rely on. http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=1908

Heres the quote from the Article....
HTC Warhawk, HTC Fortress: Behind the glamorized names, the Warhawk and Fortress are really the HTC Touch Diamond2 and HTC Touch Pro2, respectively. According to the slide, the Fortress had a target launch date of May 25, but obviously missed the mark. What's more interesting, though, is the red note at the bottom of the slide that reads, "WM 7.X refresh rewarded with Sept '09 launch date." Meanwhile, it looks like the Warhawk will ship with Windows Mobile 6.5 preinstalled and has a target launch date of August 24. Both smartphones will include support for AT&T's Video Share service, A-GPS, Wi-Fi, HSDPA, and Bluetooth.

So the Warhawk is TD2 and the Fortrss TP2
I have highlighted the 2 bits of note...
So I read that as the TP2 has missed its launch date of the 25th with AT&T but should have a refresh reward to WM7 in Sept 09.
I'm not going against what you said Hamburg, i'm just showing what I read.

seriously? windows mobile 7? I'd be happy if it could run WM 7 decently but then again official upgrade sounds good too

You all do know that Windows Mobile 6.5 will be out by this time next month right?
As far as I know, my mum is a director at T-Mobile Europe in case you were wondering, the T-Mobile Wing II (Rhodium 100) will be shipping next month with 6.5 preinstalled.
Also next month is the Dopod Tachi (or as HTC call it, the HTC Twin) also coming with 6.5 loaded.
With the addition that it's my birthday next month, July is a good month for me this year

TP2 on AT&T in US?
Anyone here using a TP2 in the US? On AT&T? In Chicago (or anywhere)?
I'm about to toss my iPhone and go back to WinMo. I started out with a Blue Angel and Alpine WAY back, then had a Kaiser and still have an Athena I play around with (although I nuked the GPS radio I think).
I'm just nervous about the "No 3G" thing. Is it EDGE only then? That would blow. I thought AT&T had some HSDPA here that provided higher speeds but honestly I'm not that up on the technologies and which is which.
I may have to wait to see how a 6.5 upgrade would go on it and how well the widescreen takes advantage of 6.5 Any ideas on comparison between the Tp2 and the Nokia N97?

Not directly. There is a browser called Fennec developed by the Firefox team which aims for mobile devices. There is an alpha version available, but it isn't fast or stable enough for everyday use IMO. Just search for it if you want to try it out.

Yeah but there's been a lot of discussion around these dates and they don't add up at all. That slide is pretty old.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Fortress gets released around October so there's a slim chance that'll be shipping with 6.5.
The latest rumor are that WM7 will only be for the newer device with Multi-Touch capacitative screen and tighter specs (not support a gazillion of configuration like 6.1/6.5) while 6.5 will stay on the current devices and lower end devices at first. Buuuuut they're just rumors.
Back to the topic, you'll most likely get a 6.5 upgrade from most carrier including T-Mo. Anyway, once HardSPL is released you'll be able to flash a 6.5 ROM within days!

It's all about bands:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UMTS_frequency_bands
Band I (W-CDMA 2100) in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand (ITU Region 1) and Brazil (part of ITU Region 2)
Band II (W-CDMA 1900) in North America and South America (ITU Region 2)
Band IV (W-CDMA 1700 or Advanced Wireless Services) in the United States (T-Mobile USA)
Band VIII (W-CDMA 900) in Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand (ITU Region 1 and ITU Region 3), and Venezuela (Corporación Digitel, C.A.)
Band V (W-CDMA 850) in Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Canada, the USA, Venezuela, other parts of South America, Israel[1], parts of Asia (ITU Region 2 and ITU Region 3)
AT&T uses 850/1900. Notice below the phone only has 850/2100 for HSPA/WCDMA but it has the bands for GSM/GPRS/EDGE:
From HTC TP2 european specs:
HSPA/WCDMA:
Europe/Asia: 900/2100 MHz
Up to 2 Mbps up-link and 7.2 Mbps down-link speeds
Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE:
Europe/Asia: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
(Band frequency, HSPA availability, and data speed are operator dependent.)

There's lots of info about removing Telstra's branding at Whirlpool. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1286616
Telstra market the phone as having an upgrade to 6.5 coming, so they will release a supported ROM in due course (ie probably long after everyone else...)

Will there be a PDA2K with EDGE?

Hey all,
I know that the current PDA2K GSM is GPRS enabled but not EDGE (EGPRS). Will there be an EDGE version or did I just buy a Siemens SX66 for no reason at all... hmm I mean I realize you probably can't upgrade it via a soft upgrade or an SD card... but at any rate any thoughts on whether an EDGE chipset based device will be available?
In PDA2k form? Never.
HTC has moved on to it's next line of products.
The HTC Universal has UMTS support, the step above EDGE.
The HTC Wizard does indeed have EDGE support. I personally believe late buyers of the PDA2k got screwed, and would not recommend ANYONE buy a new device until the next line is out.
The next v ersio nis not the form factor I (and a lot of others) desire. Yes newer and faster is better, but did what were they thinking onthe re-design of this device. I did not want a mini laptop, I want (and bought) a PDA with slid out keyboard. This has been their most popular device, and have touted how their financial numbers have skyrocketed, have they forgotten why?
I know that a lot of people that I have spoken with are just as disappointed in the new design as I am. How about others on this board?
Raptor
Is UMTS backwards compatible
Question is UMTS backwards compatible, like most edge enabled phones still support gprs, will the UMTS phones operate one edge networks. because out here in the USA UMTS is no where near, cingular is still trying to make there edge networks nation wide, and tmobile doesnt even have an edge network,
sorry what is edge????

Hypothetically, you can buy Backpack for XDA (100$ at my place:-( which gives CardFlash (CF) extension to your device and then you will need to buy CF GPRS/EDGE modem card (usual CF card for notebooks ~150$)

Touch pro 2 launch date!!!!!!

rumor confirmed! July 22. but wait, theres more. T-Mobile is getting Visual Voicemail too! check out TmoNews.com for the details. .
I am as happy as a pig in sh** or a fat guy at krispy kreme.
July 22nd. That's a long time to wait. Nokia n97 is due to be released on June 22nd I think.
TP2 beats N97 to the dust man! No competition. (a little off topic, sorry)
1. WM6.5 (when its ready) vs Symbian S60
2. 528MHz vs 434MHz CPU
3. 288MB vs 128MB RAM
4. 800x480 vs 640x360 Screen Res
5. 5 rows of keys vs 3 rows
6. TF3D and people-centric interface vs Nokia's home screen
The only plus for the N97 is it's internal memory and it's 3.5mm jack.
And even that, I will go for the Omnia i8910 HD instead.
Back to the topic, the TP2 will be released in 5 June. Only a few weeks to go. So I will wait.

Expansys Release dates:
TP2 5 June
N97 23 June
Omnia i8910 25 June
So most of the sexy phones are out in June or July
I know windows mobile is a much more versatile platform than s60. The nokia also has better video performance than the touch pro2. I might get both, one of which through t-mobile upgrade.

Expansys sells unlocked phones.
long as it will work here in the states (and maybe 3g, but not necessary) Ill get one.
I am sure it will work for USA but you won't able to use 3G as US's 3G is on a different frequency. But you are able to use GSM and EDGE. But if you can wait, TP2 should be in USA in Q3.
eh.. 3g isnt a big deal, ill mostly be using WiFi anyway. Long as it will make calls and send txt & sms messages ill be fine. My phone is one the way out really. The handset speaker doesn't work, so only way i can hear calls is using the speaker phone or a headset, which makes it pretty inconvenient to take calls or make quick calls. So im kinda wanting to replace it asap.

What frequency is US 3g on?
according to a member here, they say "ATT's 3G is 850mhz/1900mhz (up/down)"
and according to HTC
Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE:
*
Europe/Asia: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
Soo.. would this not cover it? They are just frequency's, i wouldn't think it would be different between the US and Europe. Unless its like the Metric system

The answer is in the frequency. You have misread the details.
The correct network frequency is:
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 2100
So yes, you are able to use it through 2G networks but not 3G.
The phone only accepts 2100MHz 3G networks but N. America uses 1900MHz.
Europe / Netherlands
Was the release date for Europe Jun 22?
And Does anyone know When it will be released in the Netherlands?

Not exactly correct. AT&T 3G provide 850 and/or 1900 depends on coverage, and you phone need either one (same band for up and down) to have 3G.
If I read correctly somewhere, Tmobile USA provide 1700 and 2100, and your phone MUST support BOTH (one for up, on for down) to have 3G

There is always a difference. Usually in the bands, style, looks, and keyboard. I would suggest you wait until all three come out. If you are hasty, you may end up buying a version that doesn't support HSDPA in your region.
TP2 EU/UK is MSM7200A with 2100mhz 3G. TP2 US (RHOD210) is MSM7201A with AT&T 3G. More versions are still coming, Sprint version uses MSM7600.
Wait until more is known and are out there to make sure you get the correct version. In general EU/UK versions are also compatible in large regions of Asia, but thats a rule of thumb, not a rule.
Also the U.S CDMA TP2 (Sprint and Verizon version) is going to be dual mode (CDMA and Euro GSM) i've heard. This especially has me tickled pink .
Basically i'm a happy Sprint camper and love the CDMA service, plus as a bonus if i'm visiting my big sis in the U.K, i no longer need to drag along my unlocked Moto Krzr, i can just pop in an o2 prepaid SIM in the same TP2.
Hope this comes to pass.

Htc Hero On 3g In The US ?

Hey, Ive had the Htc Hero for a few weeks, and i was wondering if it was possible to make a hack or something so 3g will work on the us 3g bands. Or will we have to wait until they release a gsm unlocked north American Htc hero. Please get back soon.
You'll have to wait because the HTC Hero only has the 900/2100 bands for 3G while the required bands are 850/1900 in the United States. Sorry.
Im thinking this will show up on Roger's in Canada (uses AT&T Compatible 850/1900) before it actually shows up from AT&T.
Ebay.ca would be the way to go.
I believe it might show up on AT&T sooner than we all think
A version with AT&T 3G bands have already passed the FCC (as well as a version with EvDo bands for Sprint) so it looks like 2 North American carriers are poised for some Hero lovin'. Frankly, I'm ready for either an AT&T Hero or a Sprint Hero as I use both carriers.

Sorry guys, but the HTC Hero is exclusive to Sprint in the United States - http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/03/htc-hero-heading-to-sprint-october-11-for-179-99-no-chin/
Your best bet for a GSM Hero that works on AT&T's 3g is to wait for Rogers(GSM) in Canada to get it. Rogers has non google branded phones like the Magic(MyTouch 3g) and the Dream(G1). Thats just my thought and I could be wrong. But thats your last sign of hope for now. Plus Bell in Canada is getting the Palm Pre, so Rogers having a Hero is a nice fighting power to go against the Pre.
And lets put an end to this.... No European and Asian GSM HTC Hero will not have 3g in the US, only Edge!!! Theirs no hacks or anything that will work... We dont need more threads asking the same questions over and over.
One more thing came to mind. If AT&T and HTC take the SenseUI and put it onto a new android phone and called it something different.... Then you can have your Hero.. I dont see that happening this year. AT&T still has to release the Fortress(Touch Pro2) and Warhawk(Diamond2) still this year.

This has been covered in this forum many many times already. You don't have to dig up old threads and then add in some wrong information.
The AT&T 3G capable (850/1900) Hero is carried by Canadian carrier Telus, NOT Rogers. The phone is available from their website directly for CAD$499 + tax, without contract. They don't ship outside Canada, and people have reported that their local Telus stores do not sell them without opening a line. Some said that it could be purchased without contract at BestBuy (in Canada of course).
A friend (who lives in Canada) of mine helped me to get one. It is unbranded, but sim locked to Telus. Unlock code can be purchased on eBay for slightly over 20 bucks. Mine now works with AT&T 3G flawlessly. Note that the difference between this Hero and the European Hero, is in hardware. No ROM flashing will enable 850/1900 for 3G on the European Hero.

It seems some people are wrong... there is a US 3g version of the Hero, as HTC does have a US 3g version of the magic/ mytouch (sold by Rogers)...

BTW, the support of the band 850 alone will not enable a phone to use AT&T 3G network. It requires BOTH 850 and 1900 together.
Yup i'm from toronto and under contract with Rogers. I bought a Telus HTC Hero and unlocked it and it works perfect with Rogers. I took a trip down to NYC and it works on AT&T 3G with no problems.
850/1900 VS. 900/2100 for 3G
I belive that hardware wise - they're not really different.
we already saw in the past hacks (for WM phones) to "enable" more bands.
I believe that HTC blocks part of the bands to complete certification faster (FCC, ETSI etc), and it can be tricked... once we'll have "US 3G" radio, we'll be able to play with it, and compare to "Europenian 3G" radio.

Sorry but this is not the case. Rogers version of Dream and Magic have been out for long time already. Have you heard of any case where people can get European or T-Mobile versions of these phones to work on AT&T 3G?
1. The European Hero does not share the same hardware part number with the Telus Hero. The former is HERO100 and the latter is HERO130. Note that this part number is independent of the ROM installed. Asian Heros (Hong Kong, Taiwan, China etc), all have different ROMs but they are all HERO100.
2. Your "certification theory" is wrong. This type of certification doesn't work that way. Adding another chip to support 2 more bands won't delay the certification by months. Days, at most, if at all.
3. Continued from 2. The HERO100 was never sent to FCC for certification. I have both phones with me right now, and there is no FCC certification logo on the HERO100 hardware or on the box, while the FCC logo is easily spotted on the HERO130.
4. People on the other thread had report dialing problems flashing HERO100 radio rom onto HERO130. The problem went away by flashing a newer HERO100 (but no one knows where it came from) radio rom, although people are still reporting SMS problem with this radio rom on HERO130. This radio has been reported to work perfectly (indeed, a lot reported better reception) on HERO100. If the HERO100 and the HERO130 share the same hardware, the difference should go away by flashing the same rom. The fact that, with the same rom the HERO130 supports 850/1900 for 3G while the HERO100 doesn't, clearly indicate the difference in hardware.
While it is not impossible for cell phone manufacturers modify radio rom to restrict bands that their phones support, this is very uncommon (Can you name those WinMo device that you mentioned?). On the other hand, almost every cell phone model has various verisons of hardware to support different bands in different countries. A chip that supports fewer bands costs less. When there are enough demand to move sales, it is much more profitable to produce a region specific hardware with a cheaper chip than to write code to restrict the functionality of a more expensive chip that supports bands that that region never needs.

Is there a version of this phone with 3G in the 850/1900 MHz AND 2100MHz frequencies?

I am a Kaiser (ATT Tilt / TyTn II) user who would like to upgrade to the Touch Pro II (Rhodium).
I know that the T-mobile version of this phone supports the 1700 & 2100 frequencies; while the European version of the phone supports the 900 & 2100 frequencies.
My Kaiser supports the 850/1900 AND 2100 Mhz frequencies, which means that I can travel all over the world and always find a 3G provider for my phone.
Does anybody know if there is a version of the Touch Pro II (Rhodium) that supports the same three 3G frequencies as my Kaiser; namely the 850/1900 MHz AND 2100MHz frequencies?
IMPORTANT: Please note that I am talking about the 3G (HSPA / WCDMA ) frequencies. I already know that the Rhodium is Quad band for on GSM/GPRS/EDGE; but for me to switch to this phone I MUST have triple band in the 3G bands; just like I have with the ATT Tilt right now.
Looking forward to your answers.
My guess would be the Tilt 2 (AT&T's version of the TP2) could have the bands like that. But I don't for sure...

Does ATT have the Tilt 2? For months I saw posts on the internet saying that it would come to ATT, but as far as I can tell (from ATT website) it was never made available.
We're still waiting for it
Some current rumors put it in October for the WinMo 6.5 launch.
Perhaps this one?

TP2 - T-mobile US version does support the following bands - no 1700
I believe the T-mobile US version does:
Here is what I see in the phone "band menu" - No 1700 support..(I believe TMo US did not win this US frequency..)
GSM(900&1800) + UMTS(900&2100)
or
GSM(1900&850) + UMTS (1900&850)
or
UMTS(2100&800)
I can switch from "Auto" to GSM or WCMA..
Hope this helps you.
The T-Mo TP2 doesn't work on AT&T's 3G unfortunately.

No there is not currently a phone in the market that will enable you to use AT&T 3G.
Wait until AT&T releases their own version of the Touch Pro 2. (they will)
Or, if you don't care about 3G (you should care) then the European Version, T-Mobile version, Sprint version and Verizon versions will all work on AT&T's EDGE network.

Thanks for your reply and the reply of all others. So my own research confirms that there is no product out there yet that will support the same three bands as the HTC Kaiser (Tilt).
I am not in a rush at all. I was a Blackberry user for many years (had 3 blackberries) and I got fed up with Research in Motion because of their lack of operating system openness. That's when I switched to Windows Mobile...through a brand new ATT Tilt (Kaiser) which I purchased only a few months ago.
Its just that I am SO happy with my choice that I am thinking ahead to my next upgrade, since a bigger nad higher resolution screen, combined with faster processor, and more RAM would be ideal. But I am not planning to switch to the Rhodium anytime soon.
I will first wait for ATT to launch it at full price, then for people to start selling new units on Ebay, for competition to get intense, and prices to come down..and for xda-developers to really get active on that unit; then I will switch. So I am thinking that for all those things to happen I will wait about 6 to 12 months after launch date of the ATT model (which is the one I would need to get in order to gain the trully global flexibility) to switch over to that unit.
Thanks again for your responses.

Well the reason I stated that T-Mobile was using the 1700/2100 3G frequencies is because those are the one that they mention in the catalog of the SP2 that they make available through their website!
There is plenty of articles on the net which say that T-Mobile chose a frequency which is not used by any other carrier in the world, and they refer to the 1700 frequency. Here are just a few:
http://gigaom.com/2008/09/23/4-things-you-need-to-know-about-t-mobile-3g/
"The T-Mobile 3G network may look like those in use by other global carriers, but it’s not. T-Mobile uses a radio frequency band (1700 MHz) for 3G connections that is unique in the world. The carrier claims it allows faster data speeds but the reality is it means that only phones specifically designed for the T-Mobile network will work at full speed"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-Mobile
In September of 2008 T-Mobile began rolling out it's 3G network (operating on the 1700 MHz band)
The official T-Mobile website says:
https://support.t-mobile.com/doc/tm23715.xml;jsessionid=xhk4zMCQaMfhQJxqos?
What frequency does your 3G network support?
Our 3G network supports both the 1700MHz and 2100MHz frequencies.
Since the T-Mobile website says they support both 1700 and 2100, I wonder if a phone that supports the "850/1900 MHz AND 2100MHz" combination (such as the Tilt, and perhaps the Tilt 2) works with T-Mobile's 3G network?

That is interesting. So the Australian version of the Tp2 runs on UMTS? Is that phone out already? Does it support 1900 and 2100 3G as well?

It has 850MHz and 2100MHz, but not 1900MHz. It will work on part of AT&Ts 3G network but not all of it.

i see. Thanks for the reply. In that case I am going to wait for the ATT model as that has the frequency combination that fits best with my international work.
I found the HTC Touch Pro2 (US Version) at On The Go Solutions
Last Friday I found the HTC Touch Pro2 (US Version) at On The Go Solutions:
http://www.onthegosolutions.com/product.asp?itemMDL=HTC_TOUCHPRO2_US
They told me it will be available in about 2 weeks. According to them it will run Windows Mobile 6.1 and not 6.5.
Hope this helps.
Too expensive!
Hope price go low in a few months...
All TP2 versions comes with 6.1 installed but MS announced a free update to 6.5 soon as they release it!
Thanks for the info and welcome to forums!

Yes, price is definitely going down and quickly. Don't be fooled into buying at such high prices. If you take a look at the T-Mobile model it is being sold on Ebay brand new, unopened for US $449; and that is only a few weeks after the product was released. I expect the same behavior with the ATT model, or even lower prices if it doesn't include a front camera...and has less memory (as some have speculated) than the other models.
I am going to wait 6 to 12 months to get mine, and I expect to be able to obtain a brand new one, without a contract for aproximately $300 within that time frame.
Yeah.. I know
I expect to buy it lower in less time
