Hey all,
I know that the current PDA2K GSM is GPRS enabled but not EDGE (EGPRS). Will there be an EDGE version or did I just buy a Siemens SX66 for no reason at all... hmm I mean I realize you probably can't upgrade it via a soft upgrade or an SD card... but at any rate any thoughts on whether an EDGE chipset based device will be available?
In PDA2k form? Never.
HTC has moved on to it's next line of products.
The HTC Universal has UMTS support, the step above EDGE.
The HTC Wizard does indeed have EDGE support. I personally believe late buyers of the PDA2k got screwed, and would not recommend ANYONE buy a new device until the next line is out.
The next v ersio nis not the form factor I (and a lot of others) desire. Yes newer and faster is better, but did what were they thinking onthe re-design of this device. I did not want a mini laptop, I want (and bought) a PDA with slid out keyboard. This has been their most popular device, and have touted how their financial numbers have skyrocketed, have they forgotten why?
I know that a lot of people that I have spoken with are just as disappointed in the new design as I am. How about others on this board?

Is UMTS backwards compatible
Question is UMTS backwards compatible, like most edge enabled phones still support gprs, will the UMTS phones operate one edge networks. because out here in the USA UMTS is no where near, cingular is still trying to make there edge networks nation wide, and tmobile doesnt even have an edge network,
sorry what is edge????

Hypothetically, you can buy Backpack for XDA (100$ at my place:-( which gives CardFlash (CF) extension to your device and then you will need to buy CF GPRS/EDGE modem card (usual CF card for notebooks ~150$)
Cheers
So there isn't such thik as an EDGE upgrade for the siemes?

Hi guys, i am getting a universal from the UK in about 2 weeks and i have some questions.
1. Is it unlockable yet?
2. Is bluetooth stable, not cutting off during calls and stuff?
3. Since it is WCDMA, does that mean i can use it with CDMA services here in the states like sprint and Verizon?
4. What is the best case for it
Thanks for reading my questions, you replies will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Obiesoft,
1. Not yet to my knowledge... Keep an eye on the 'universal' unlocker from this forum. An app that is updated over and over to add support for new phones.
2. Did not try yet, sorry, one of the other ones ?
3. Most likely not. UMTS here in Europe is on 2100 Mhz, as radio bands are of course regulated per country, you might want to see with your wireless provider if they a) use 'UMTS or WCDMA' as a standard, and b) if they also operate on the 2100 Mhz band. In the phone there is only one band available for UMTS connections.
GSM in general is provided in bigger cities in the states, you have to check which wireless provider has it in your area, some might even have the Qtek 9000 with an interesting price if you take one of their plans.
(T-Mobile) Be carefull nevertheless, the USA has GSM services on 1900 Mhz and on 850 Mhz, the Universal can do w/o a problem the 1900 Mhz band, but to my knowledge not the 850 Mhz band. You would be out of luck if your cellular provider only provides services on this band. Check also if you have to be a lot in rural areas, as far as I notices coverage there is way less on GSM systems.
4. I'm happy with the 'leatherishlike' one it comes with. Sleek, and it does protect it very well. Snug, just no belt-clip, that's all.
Hope you'll be having fun with your device ! (Well, all depends of course if you can get it either sim-unlocked or from one of your local providers...)
Willem
Thanks
Thanks for your reply
I hope there will be an unlocker soon, i have Tmobile here in Florida, i will call to find out of they use 1900 or 850Mhz. I will probably try asking Tmobile UK or something.
The reason for me asking if it will work with USA CDMA is that i also have an account with a CDMA provider so it would be cool if i could use two providers on one phone, probably switching between them.
I have a MDAIII with WM5 and the bluetooth does not work, keeps d/c so i hope this one stays on with the MDA PRO.

I know that T-Mobile Germany sells the device w/o SIMlock. Might be an option. The QTEK versions of the device come also w/o SIMlock. I don't know if T-Mobile Germany ships the device outside europe, you might want to have a look at http://www.expansys-usa.com, they have a Spanish version of the QTEK you can easily reflash to the WWE version, new and not locked for a whopping 1045 USD.
P.S. I have no commercial relation to either T-Mobile or Expansys and both links are provided only for informational purposes.
Obiesoft, I have PM'd you.
simlock
t-mobile.germany has no SimLock - that's right!
but they did a NETLock!! - you#ve got to pay 100-300 € to get it unlocked for other networks. If You know where to find Band-Information i can tell you if it supports yours.
Universal is not working on CDMA One/CDMA 2000/EVDO networks.
In US, it will work for voice calls and GPRS on the 1900 networks like T-Mobile US. You will have to wait for T-Mobile US to launch UMTS (WCDMA) as it is planned, but I'm not sure they will use the same bands as in Europe.
MDA PRO
I did not check here sooner, my girlfriend is in london and she got the MDA PRO since she just renewed her contract. I am guessing it will be locked cause she is just shipping it and i will get it next week. Tmobile UK said they can unlock it for 15 pounds and it will take 28 days, so in the mean time i am hoping there is another way for me to unlock it.
HI all, thanks here for all your help. I finnaly have my unlock code from T-mobile UK, for 30 pounds, but i think it is workth it.
Now using the PRO as a phone, it is kinds weird to get used to. I live inthe US and i put my T-MOble US sim card in, when i check the settings, i found out for some strange reason that the GSM band it was using was EGSM+DCS1800, i don't know what this band is, but i noticed that i don;t get enought bars, always loosing signal, and i have put the new 1.08 radio rom on it. My SK65 gets better signal.
The only other option i see there for GSM band is PCS1900, so i have manually set it to this. My question is, which band should i be using? whats the diffrence? and when setting up WAP for MMS, do i use WAP1.2 or WAP2.0.
Also does the UTMS2100 mean it will work on Sprints 2100 network?
Thanks.
Search is your friend
All of the Universal forums are full of information about why the MDA Pro is not as useful in the US because it is just Tri-Band. T-Mo USA uses GSM/GPRS 1900 for voice and data. You need to stick to this band alone. Try using WAP 1.2 for WAP. There's no EDGE available on the Uni.
No, Sprint won't work It's different technology using a different standard. You can only use UMTS in Europe, the Middle and Far East. That's why this device is targeted for these markets and was never brought to North America. And it never will be.
Let's hope the successor to the Universal can do it by incorporating the latest technologies prevalent in North America.
I am from the Philippines and I am planning to get one. The nearest I could find was this:

But it is the UK version, is there any difference in hardware (keyboard layouts etc..) and software?

There is always a difference. Usually in the bands, style, looks, and keyboard. I would suggest you wait until all three come out. If you are hasty, you may end up buying a version that doesn't support HSDPA in your region.
TP2 EU/UK is MSM7200A with 2100mhz 3G. TP2 US (RHOD210) is MSM7201A with AT&T 3G. More versions are still coming, Sprint version uses MSM7600.
Wait until more is known and are out there to make sure you get the correct version. In general EU/UK versions are also compatible in large regions of Asia, but thats a rule of thumb, not a rule.
Also the U.S CDMA TP2 (Sprint and Verizon version) is going to be dual mode (CDMA and Euro GSM) i've heard. This especially has me tickled pink .
Basically i'm a happy Sprint camper and love the CDMA service, plus as a bonus if i'm visiting my big sis in the U.K, i no longer need to drag along my unlocked Moto Krzr, i can just pop in an o2 prepaid SIM in the same TP2.
Hope this comes to pass.

Well if it works in Hong Kong it should work in the Philippines I think. Thanks for the opinion guys, will ask expansys also regarding this matter.
Cant wait to get my hands on a TP2. Actually, I am getting a free Iphone 3G from my service provider as loyalty award and I am selling it to get a TP2 :-D
My TP2 has died, and I'm in the market looking for a new phone.
I've decided I want to go Android, and I'm on AT&T.
The most important criteria for me are:
a. size (don't like the trend towards gigantic 4.3" models)
b. tweakable / modable
c. Front Facing Camera
d. rear LED Flash
e. AT&T 3G friendly
Being locked into AT&T I gave the Captivate, the X10 and the Aria a look and all fail to hit my important criteria.
I was all set to get an Nexus S until I learned it won't 3G on AT&T. I'm kinda digging the Optimus 2X but but it's not on the streets yet (I'm in Thailand until Feb and then in Tokyo for a week, so this is still an option). I'm even tempted to go to the darkside and get an iphone 4.
So ... long story short: can anybody point me at handset that sports a rockin 3.5"~4.0" screen and hits my other criteria?
Much thanks ...
Rob
BTW - if this post should be elsewhere, feel free to move it and chastise.
you want at&t 3g.
with a tmous phone. you wont get at&t 3g.
with a verizon/sprint world phone. you wont get at&t 3g.
with a european gsm phone. you wont get at&t 3g.
the frequencies are different.
your 'important' criteria bar is too high.
sh4d0w86.
You may want to look into a Nokia N8. Also the Samsung I8520 Galaxy Beam meets all your criteria. It will work on at&t 1900 3G band.

i think youre forgetting about all the Canadian carriers and Telstra they all have AT&T compatible bands for 3G
@OP id suggest u take a look at some phones that are from Telstra and all of the Canadian carriers, they have a great selection of phones
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
I know Sammy had to make this model because of some hardware compatability issues with T-Mobile's 3G network, and I've head that the standard international S2 (i9100) won't work with T-Mobile's 3G. If I buy the T-Mobile version, will I be able to use this in Asia? (specifically Thailand).
Right now I'm debating whether to get this or the Sensation. I'd rather get this phone, but I'm moving to Thailand next year, so I just want to make sure everything will work. I've searched everywhere and I haven't found an answer to this question.
it will depend which network frequency you are planing to use it on, but the answer is likely yes
