Being that XDA has great info but 5x the garbage, here is some knowledge if you are interested in having root access on your HTC Evo 4G. This may change in the future.
Brought to us by Toastcfh, so this has been known as the "Toast" method of root and is quickly becoming the only way to go if you want root access. So thanks to him and anyone who has helped in the process.
Note: This process will wipe all data from the phone, so you will HAVE to start from stock.
Steps to have root:
Step .1
No matter what version of stock you are on, download this file: PC36IMG.zip
This file can be found directly here: http://link.geekfor.me/rootedromzip
Original site and info here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=690762
Now that you have this file, place it on the root of your sdcard. That means in your sdcard, and in no other folder. DO NOT rename this file. This will take care of acquiring root. But we are just getting started, so on to the next step.
Step .2
This next part will cover getting ready to use a custom recovery. This has be given to us by Koush and is known as ClockWorkMod Recovery. Major thanks to him and the devs behind ROM Manager for making this so simple/PC less.
Download this file: recovery-clockwork-1.8.1.7-supersonic.zip (file version may very)
The file can be found here: http://www.droidaftermarket.com/koush/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-1.8.1.7-supersonic.zip
Again, original site and info can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=699043
Now, with this file, you want to place this in the root of your sdcard as well. However, this must be renamed to 'update.zip.'
Note: This file must be named update.zip and remain in the root of sdcard to use regularly.
Step .3a
Here you will want to download whatever rom you want in zip format and stick it in the root of your sdcard as well. You will need this for later. Most roms now have the super user app so you will be good to run rooted apps.
Step .3b
There is a good possibility that whatever rom you just downloaded does not come with the newer radio for the phone. This is available in a zip as well. Again, put in the root of sdcard and save for later.
Download this file: evo.1.39.00.05.31.zip
Found here: http://link.geekfor.me/radio139000531
Info here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696462
All files should be in the ROOT of your SDCARD. Meaning not in any folder.
Now that the files are ready, we can begin to attain root access.
Step .4
First you must reboot the phone into recovery mode. To do this you must turn your phone on holding the Volume Down button and the Power button until a white screen comes up.
When this screen pops up, the phone will go into recovery mode and works automatically. Give it some time (~60 seconds) and it will ask you if you want to install PC36IMG.zip.
Step .5
When the phone asks you if you want to update, click the Volume Up button to say YES.
Allow the phone to work. Takes a couple minutes so take a little breather.
Step .6
Once complete, the phone will ask if you want to reboot the phone. Again you click the Volume Up button and respond, YES.
Allow the phone to boot and install the stock rooted rom. Once the phone has booted, do not bother signing in and everything as you will be doing it again very soon. But congratzi, you have root access! But only from Recovery mode.
Step .7
Power down your phone. And then, turn the phone on by holding down Volume Down and Power.
Step .8
This will send you into the white screen that is searching for PC36IMG.zip. When it is done, this time decline the update by pressing Volume Down. Then it will ask you if you want to reboot. Press Volume Down again and say NO.
Step .9
This will send you into a menu that you can actually control. Use the Volume buttons to navigate up and down. Use the Power button to select. Scroll down to 'Recovery' and press Power. This will reboot the phone with a black screen and a red exclamation point icon.
Step .10
From this black screen, press Volume Up and Power. This will send you into the real recovery mode.
Step .11
Once here, again use the Volume buttons to navigate and Power to select. Navigate down to 'wipe data/factory reset' and select with Power. This will wipe the phone and get you ready for your first rom.
Step. 12
Once that is done, navigate to 'apply sdcard:update.zip' and press Power to select.
Congratulations, you are now in the custom recovery of ClockWorkMod.
Step .13 and beyond.
This menu is a fully capable recovery. Although it takes some time to get to, here is where you flash any zip you want. I recommend you start with the rom, then the radio. It doesn't matter really. And if the rom comes with the radio then it is redundant. But flash to your hearts content and enjoy your rooted Evo.
To flash zips, navigate to 'install zip from sdcard' then select whatever zip you want to apply. Refer to the roms instructions for any specifics.
Enjoy!
Note:
-Notice I didn't say "connect to computer?" This really can be aquired completely ota if necessary.
-Later on you might want to rename PC36IMG.zip and store it somewhere safe on the sdcard and home computer. Not that you will ever really need it, but if you want to go back to stock, this is a semi-automatic way to do so.
If there were a "thanks" button, I would have clicked it. Very nice of you to put all of this in one thread. Going to help a lot of people out.
Thanks. Finally a short & sweet guide.

hey thanks y'all. I wrote this because flashing seems kinda confusing to people and for those who have yet to take the leap gain more confidence. fear not the root process! find a rom you like, use this, and boom. eventually think this is how themes will work... im guessing there is always metamorph as well.
Yea, I came from the Droid and used the crap out of Rom Manager. That is one awesome app for testing and frequently changing roms.
I wrote a rooting guide and have pictures in it of the recovery process, feel free to use them in here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701152
Great job Burst! This does help out for newbies. This should be pinned in a newbie forum. They also need something like this in the event you need to push apps to your phone.
Example: if a newb installs a Flipz rom (.2), and he wants to keep fm radio feature on his phone it would be nice if some has a guide like this to help.
Anyways great job again.
this was awesome!
I did this all OTA just for fun and it worked great! And I agree that it already seems faster and more efficient! Nice job!
i'm not asking this because i think it was any fault of your tutorial, but because i'm guessing you'd know the answer: when first going into recovery and installing update from .zip, i'd had whatever rom removed all of sprint's bloatware, but in the format it came in after downloading. after selecting the update, it said no update had been found. i rebooted and renamed the file to update.zip, but after trying the aforementioned steps again, it said the file didn't meet the verification of something. this is starting to aggravate me; i've been trying for a while to load a custom rom.

update.zip is the 1mb~ recovery zip, leave the rom named what it was.
If you just want to add zip files do you have to have full root? I currently am using unrevoked as I dont need full root, at least I dont think I will. LOL
For some reason this is still not adding my zip file. I have been though this process 3 times. Its really frustrating. All I want to do is add one zip file. Pulls out hair.

Install guide :
1. Disable any lagfix if have it installed
2. Make sure have the 2e recovery. If your rom is froyo and you don't have 2e recovery, use cf-root by chainfire
3. Make sure you have a backup of your /efs (not mandatory, but highly recommended).
4. Factory reset is NOT required, but is recommended. Wipe cache and dalvik cache if you’re not performing a factory reset.
Installation Steps:
1. Download the ROM and put Spike Speedy Edition v2.0.zip on your internal memory
2. Download clockworkmod recovery from here. You *need* Clockworkmod, this won’t work with stock recovery.
3. Rename the clockworkmod recovery file to “update.zip” and put it on your internal sdcard.
4. If you had Voodoo installed prior to installing this ROM (eclair or froyo), make sure you still have the "disable lagfix" folder inside "/sdcard/Voodoo". If you’re coming from sztupy’s kernel, make sure you have disabled all Lagfixes from CWM.
5. Shutdown phone, wait for it to power down, then boot the phone into recovery mode (press volume up, keep it pressed, then press home button, keep it pressed, then press power button, keep it pressed until you see the Galaxy S screen. Release all three buttons when you see it).
6. Select “apply sdcard:update.zip” (use volume rocker to move up and down, and home button to select). Clockworkmod recovery will boot now (you may have to do apply update.zip twice for Clockworkmod to show up).
7. Once in Clockworkmod, select “install zip from sdcard” (use volume rocker to move up and down and the back button to select).
8. Select “choose zip from sdcard” and then select Spike Speedy Edition v2.0.zip. Then choose yes.
9. The update will start (will take some 5 minutes) and during the flashing you will see some strange big characters on the screen, don’t worry, that’s normal. After the process finishes, you will be dropped back into Clockworkmod recovery. From there, choose go back, and then reboot phone.
10. The first boot will take some time as the ROM will deodex
Special tnx to kalpik for install guide.

In the interest of Community and Theming in general I wanted everyone to have the Stock Framework so you could revert back if you so choose... Also themers please feel free to use the zips here to build your themes (they update System UI correctly). ANYONE can use this or any of my work... It's all about sharing in my opinion. Thats what ANDROID is all about... LET THE THEMING BEGIN!!
Instructions
1. You MUST have a deoxeded Rom.
2. After downloading the zip Put the zip in your phone files (not IN a file on the root or you phones file system (hint it shows as a disk when you hook up to your pc via usb).
3.. Go into recovery CWM (I use quickboot which is great and FREE on the market so i can go directly into recovery without shutting the phone off).
a.Start by turning the phone OFF.
b. Hold the volume up (or louder) button down. Then press the power at the same time and hold them both down. It boots into recovery CWM (its ORANGE in color)...
4. Using the up/down (volume buttons) navigate to "install zip from sdcard" (hopefully you've already put the zip in your phone files, see #2), once its highlighted hit the power button.
5. Using the up/down (volume buttons) navigate to "choose zip from sdcard" and once its highlighted hit the power button.
6. Using the up/down (volume buttons) navigate to the zip you put on your phone and once its highlighted hit the power button.
7. Using the up/down (volume buttons) navigate to " Yes - Install "whatever your zip is.zip" and once its highlighted hit the power button.
8. LET IT DO IT'S THANG. Once it's done at the bottom it will say "Install from sdcard complete."
9. Using the up/down (volume buttons) navigate to "+++++Go Back+++++" and once its highlighted hit the power button.
10. Using the up/down (volume buttons) navigate to "reboot system now" and once its highlighted hit the power button.
11. HOLY CRAP BATMAN YOU ARE DONE!!
Thats all there to applying themes (zips) or Roms (that are zips).

This replaces my framework-res and twframework-res, but not my Systemui.apk. I believe it may have something to do with the updater script.
Thanks though .
EDIT: Nevermind, somehow I've accidentally placed my systemui.apk inside my framework folder, so it now overrides my current one in system/app. How on earth does one reverse this? LOL!

I was comparing our zips (my ObsidianRed) and I have my framework and app folders under system while yours is just in the root of the folder. Is your updater script edited to work that way? It's interesting because it's different.

This is a guide for noobs
First things first, ask yourself am I using a T-Mobile Note II SGH-t889?
If you are not, stop now.
Now if your phone blows up, fires nuclear missiles, activates sky net, or becomes a nice pretty paperweight, I am not responsible. You are using this guide at your own risk.
That being said I have provided the exact methods I used to do this on me device and it works perfectly.
OK let’s begin.
First plug your phone into your computer.
-If you are getting an error message about a connection you must have windows xp SP3 or higher (vista, windows 7)
-you must also have the Samsung mobile phone drivers available here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961956
-you must also have windows media player 11 available on the Microsoft website.
Now that you have all this you should be able to explore the files on your phone, it will be under mobile devices.
Now on your desktop let’s make a new folder called System Folder, and in that Folder make two folders, one called ROM and one called KERNEL.
Now back on the desktop let’s make another folder called ODIN
SYSTEM FOLDER
-ROM
-KERNEL
ODIN
Let’s go over to the T-mobile note II XDA forum page http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1877
Now we’re going to go to the section called ORIGINAL ANDROID DEVELOPMENT
Download the KERNEL "peruses". http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1960935
Download the one that says Perseus-alpha27.4-T889-CWM.zip (though the version number may change)
Put that file in the KERNEL folder (DO NOT UNZIP IT)
Download cwm6-recovery-n7100-121014.tar : http://www.mediafire.com/?mouxvj4og7azcow CWM md5: 67208cd19e82478af8591a83ca0a39b2 (the md5 is used to check your download, make sure you have no errors)
Put this file in the ODIN folder
Download CWM SUPERSU installable ZIP: http://www.mediafire.com/?w3i20sr6r58r8ah (put this in System Folder, DO NOT UNZIP)
SU md5 : 010b98d757544d7b2971574951c1d5e6
Download PC Odin: http://d-h.st/6Er put this into the Odin folder and unzip this one
Download Xquizit rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1960950
Download the xquizit rom kitchen too.
Put these in the ROM folder, (DO NOT UNZIP)
This rom is straight forward, once you get the hang of flashing try other ROMs.
Now copy the System Folder to your phones external SD card.
Now open Odin and select the pda button and select the cwm6-recovery-n7100-121014.tar file in the Odin folder on desktop
Now switch off device and reboot in download mode by:
Press Vol down + Home +Power, and then, press Volume UP button in Warning Page to enter the Download Mode
Connect device to PC and wait till device successfully added to com port (it will turn light blue)
Hit ‘Start’ to flash
Once it flashed successfully, you can see 'PASS' in table above the ID: COM, you can disconnect device from PC
Now reboot into CWM by: Switch off device and press Vol Up + Home +Power hold about 5 second
Install SuperSu by selecting install zip from SD card, then select install zip from external SD card, then navigate to system folder and install the superuser.zip that is there.
Reboot.
Download Triangle Away from the play store or from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114
Run this and it will reset your flash counter to 0.
You have now achieved root.
Install titanium backup, and backup all of your user apps+data (USER APPS ONLY or just reinstall them all from the play store) (you can do this one by one or in a batch in the third tab if you have the paid version. (DO NOT BACKUP RED NAMED FILES, ONLY WHITE)
Download APN backup and restore from the play market
Open it, you will get an error, dismiss it and press the back button
Open titanium and find APN backup and restore, long press it and select to make it a system app.
Press home.
Open APN B&R. and dismiss the error, this time hit menu and disable the ICS check. Then press back and reopen it, NO ERROR
Now backup your APN settings.
Switch off device and press Vol Up + Home +Power hold about 5 second to go back into recovery
Go to the backup/restore section, and backup your current rom (do not skip this, we are about to erase your phone and if something goes wrong and you do not have this, pretty paperweight)
Now go back to the main menu
Wipe data and factory reset 3 times over, wipe cache 3 times over, now go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache 3 times over
now go back to the install zip from sd card menu and select the external sd card, navigate to system folder, and then Rom, then install the xqizit rom.zip file it will open aroma installer, it will give you options of what you want to do, you do not need to re wipe, install typical or custom to choose what apps you want, (svoice is removed unless you add it back under custom) then you want to install the 15 toggle mod.
Now once that is done, reboot the device, wait 10 minutes.
Now open the play store and update superuser
Download apn backup and backup the new tmobile apn with the wifi fix and titanium backup and restore your apps
You are now rooted and on a custom rom with multi window support. Hold down the back button to activate multi window.
Reboot into recovery
Install the perseas kernel zip from the kernel folder
Reboot the phone
Wait for the home screen
Reboot for good measure
You will want to put triangle away back on your device and run it again
You can download CPU control apps and over clock and under clock ECT.
You can change your boot animations; see my post under themes n apps for that.
Have fun and enjoy
Special thank to Dr.Ketan , Chainfire , Chenlu, simplelife, wild child, and any others I have forgotten to mention
Well I would say this needs a sticky...
But since we cant get anything stickied for no reason at all. It will just wander off into the forgotten realm of the tmobile note 2 forums in the dark cold depths of xda where no one cares to do anything to help organize this forum.
Not only do we have worthless posts repeated day after day to no end, and the same question asked repeatedly by the same user. The foreigners that dont have a clue. And trolling to no end. But a thread that could possibly help someone one day will just die along with 'help I bricked my phone' threads. What a shame...
Someone please sticky this

Bump for your hard work.
This seems like a great tutorial and guide. The only thing missing might be pictures for the super noobs
I haven't tried this yet but i subbed for future reference
What about backing up the IMIE? Forgive me if it's in there it's just that I am very nervous about that. I am coming from the HTC Sensation and am not familiar with flashing Samsung phones. And from what I am understanding this issue is even new to those that have been flashing Samsung phones in the past
To be honest
I havr never backed up my imei
I only use sammy
I have never had a problem
Ill look into this for you though
Good point, better safe than sorry.

Don't wanna be a hater, but this guide is super drawn out. There is already plenty of guides that explain it much better, A for effort tho.
Yea its long but I mean where are the other guides? This forums a mess and theres no sticky thats what I was talking about

The stickies you all want regarding root already exist in the Development forum. Everything you need to know is contained in that thread.
