I have a very serious reguest to ask of all the good programmers and chefs on XDA site.
I am what you would call a power user of my Hermes aswell as my PC and am always looking for the best and easy to use apps for my PDA. One of the apps I would love to use more is my windows mobile office package but due to the lack of integraty between PC office and PDA office I refrain from using my PDA office. Examples is the lack of formulas in PDA office in compareson to PC office. I have searched the web for better office Apps but the cost a fortune, Example is SoftMakers Office... approx 66 Pounds.
Is there anyone who could help me and other Office users by programming a more transparent office for PDA?
And does anyone know if there are programs like GNU Octave that can be run on PPC since I am an engineering student and would love to have these tools in my pocket.
Any help in to this respect would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. I would like to thank all the people whoe have allready made my PDA experience enjoyable, My favourate roms : CRC, TNT(although it has been discontinued, Josh Manila ect... Thank you all very much
Matlab
Well I dunno about Office or Octave but there's a great "Matlab Clone" for the PPC called LME for Pocket PC, just Google it, there's no miss. I love Matlab and this great program works just as well, it has most of the functions you need when help is needed. Hope it helps!

Thanx alot, I will do so. Just for interest sake. Google Smath Studio. It is a graphing calc 2D and 3D, and you can do some programing on it, but only "if, while for " commands.
I agree that pocket office is incomplete. I wish pocket excell would do all the formulas just like the desktop version. I got spoiled using a palm pilot for years, it did all the formulas.
This request, though, might be better heard in the dev/hacking forum.

this is a fair comment, everyone is entitled to voice their opinions on windows.
Its just a shame that its so easy for people to make comments like this on WM2k5, I have to say, I am disapointed with overall speed. I think the swap into flash from RAM has contributed to this, but thats not the whole story.
My XDAII with 2k5 was faster than the universal. Bah. What did HTC or MS do wrong?
they dont have buzzzzz
Thats probably worryingly right.
Speaking of that, how did they "buy Buzz a Universal" fund come on?
excuse my language, but that thingy really piss me off.

What version of Outlook are you using? And have you applied the latest service pack ?
Am I the only one to fnd that WM5 is a complete waste of time and not worth upgradong for let alone buying. It is in fact a huge step back from 2003.
First of all the flaky Activesync 4 which has had minimal testing on anything approaching a real world PC. How could any developer worth anything have not tested this on a machine with half-decent secruity measures, especially moving the sync protocol to use the TCP/IP stack. TCP/IP -> firewall -doh! (not the laughable toy Windows Firewall either).
Onto the operating system itself, where do I start?
1. The new "improved" memory management???? where is the improvement. How can you class something an improvement when it slows everything down, makes usability more difficult.
2. The communications manager. ....why???? a dumb interface hiding access to needed functions, especially when you are setting up a wireless access, why put on a pointless window just to be able to "switch on" a function???
3.GPRS why hide functionality again? Why remove the connect option from the icon on the top bar. Why do I have to start an internet explorer session just to connect to GPRS?
4.Messaging. Why remove the send/receive button? now we have to press menu then navigate to the send/receive function. So much easier to use...I think not... and why is Outlook email the default, we are not all corporate clones yet
5.Contacts. Where are all the customisation funtions, why can't i arrange the display to suit me. Why can't i select more than one contact at a time, which bright spark of an MS designer (whose only experience of the real world is the trip to the coffee machine) thought it was a good idea to only select one contact at a time....
6. Uninstall programmes, doesn't work properly, stupid error message about not being able to uninstall completley, then bits being left over even in soft reset, making a hard reset inevitable. double doh!!!
7.Installation failures, for example installing MS own voice command, warns not to install on anything but main memory but then when that is selected comes up with a classic null error message, and takes up over 50% of the program memory anyway.
For those of us who haven't got time to sit and devise brilliant technical workarounds, for us who have to deal with an irate user group having this approximation of an upgrade forced upon them. WM5 is a complete waste of space.
I THINK Buzz got given a Universal....

I agree with much that has been said above. Is their anyway of uninstalling M$ WM2k5 and going back to 2k3 2nd ed on a Universal (I-mate JASJAR)?

I don't think can be go back to 2k3 2nd ed because Universal just design for wm2k5 , same as BA runnig for 2k3 2nd ed , if MS don't had wm2k5 text verson in BA that we can't get wm2k5 in BA , as I knew HTC just install the ROM proved by MS.
Hi everybody
I have the main question - what are the main advantages of WM6.1 comparing to WM6.0.
Is WM6.1 worth enought for change if we says about so many mystakes in it?
Sorry fo my english.
Bigfoot
I'm interested too, and what about Battery usage & Speed (memory usage) ?
thanks
There´s quite a few threads with the same question and the answer is usually the same....Try the roms out.
To me is kind of rude when someone says"this one is better than that one" or stuff like that, because these rom cooks are using their time just for us and they don´t deserve those comparisons.....so like I said give different roms a shot and compare yourself.

WM 6.1. can be managed from System Center Mobile Device Center (see http://www.microsoft.com/systemcenter/mobile/default.mspx). Thta's a big advantage for the large compagnies
The bluetooth pairing doesn't need the password 0000 toggled in.
Memory & battery usage are still the same.
Going back to WM6

After many efforts to work with WM6.1 and with my apps I finally gave up: for the indevidual (and not companies) there still many bugs comparing to the stable WM6: annoying soft-reset, many apps are well integraded with WM6.1 etc.
Sorry, but I do not see how WM6.1 is better than WM6.
but are any of the roms real 6.1...or just lookie likey?????
i have been using PDAVIET 3.08.61.29WWE and it is excellent. I have many apps loaded and have not encountered a single problem. This rom is blazing fast and supports everything i have thrown at. 6.1 has been perfect for me i dont have any problems as i read. i literally install 1 to 2 apps per day and not a single issue. before this i was using FInixNOver WM6.1 and same thing not a single problem.
in fact, i was looking for WM6.1 because i wanted a new GUI ... but microsoft appears to be as same as always ... just sells us old **** that hadn't changed since Windows Mobile 2003 ... poorly unacceptable ... like microsoft ... like always ... i'm just fed up with theses poors OSs, i hope the iPhone2 will get out soon, i will sell my trinity as soon as i can and get this really GOOD device !
there will never be improvements on WM from microsoft for a long time, everyone will have to wait until at least 1 year before seeing the first devices coming with WM7, so i prefer going to a brand that do good human-machine interfaces, and the iPhone is doing really good !
why would we have to stay to WM ?! the iPhone do the Exchange Sync ... i just don't understand anymore microsoft ...
Question about pocket excell and word
I red somewhere that WM 6.1 pocket word and excell documents are in PC full format and for WM6.0 this format is only pocket. Is that true?

Hi
Iphone ? ha ha ha ha
It's so buggy and you need itunes to use it .......
If you want another interface, try ifonz or another one available here
I use now WM6.1 on 3 devices : a trinity, a blue angel and a smartphone : so far so good
And I am not a big fan of Bill !
iPhone
I bought two 8 Gig iPhones the first day they came out. One for myself, and one for my wife. The very next day, I returned mine (10% return charge).
My wife loves it because it's VERY simple to use, and you cannot mess things up easily. But for me, you have to HACK the PISS out of it to get it to do ANYTHING! It's network is dog slow, no MMS, no GPS, no SD slot, no programs to install, (untill I hacked it), it crashes more often than my WM6 devices, JOBS Locks it down every chance he gets, iTunes SUCKS and crashes Windows! I will admit, the screen and the multi-touch is impressive! It makes a GREAT iPod, but a usable communications tool, it's not.
Even with all the hacks on it, it still does not compare to WM6. WM has litterally thousands of software programs you can use freely for just about anything. I'm sure in time, the iPhone will get closer, but for now, not for me.
My biggest pet peeve was the fact that my appointments would not show up on the main screen when I first turn it on. That's something I insist on with my WM phone.
If you want a great TOY with a fantastic screen, then it's fine.
i think differences are only little.. part of it is the sms system. 6.1 transform sms system into some kind of a chat window. well this is quite good considering it is easier to read the history messages

Why not trying the new SPB Mobile Shell 2.0?
I am very happy with this.
I apologize for getting side tracked.
iPhone does have a great GUI, it's just locked down making it hard to modify, at least for now.
You are right, WM 6.1 GUI is basically the same. Thanks Bill!
WM 6.1 adds the threaded SMS as mentioned before. It IS slower, but I prefer this layout.
The task manager now shows a LOT more information including running processes, memory consumption, & CPU consumption.
I'm not having any of the problems reported by other users (ie: program incompatibilities, crashes, bluetooth, activesync, etc...), so it's MUCH quicker running on my phone.
Bluetooth is Much more reliable, and simple to hook up (0000 is automatic).
Browsing in File Explorer is Much Quicker.
It might just be me, but my speaker phone seems a bit louder.
Managed Programs as mentioned by Stingray66.
Wireless Lan seems to have less trouble for me. Stays connected without having to set it up constantly.
Just my experiences.
6.1 is perfect for my Trinity, RAM memory avalaible about 25 Mb, A2DP is perfect and direct, without password, multitasking in best way.-
I don´t like the easy touch interface, but in fact, with SPB pocket plus interface is working perfect and with your own custom interface.-
I can see youtube and flash videos, no problem with video and audio files and 100% compatible with Corecodec media player.-
In my own opinion is the best OS for my trinity.-
Thanks Landy.-

I agree and .NET 3.5 can be added too. With the tool of Modaco (.NET Configuration) it's possible to switch between .NET versions and even configure the version for each application.

Hello
I'm looking for a way to install java runtime on pocket pc (windows mobile 6.1 on hp ipaq hx2495). I've been looking all over the internet for a specific download, but I'm not very experienced when it comes to java, and I don't know what to download. To be more specific, I'm trying to run this java program called DGuitar (http://dguitar.sourceforge.net/en/index.html). Thanks for the help!
Woot! Something I can answer...
There are a few answers though;
First you can use IBM's J9 which works just fine on the WM standard versions (no phone).
I find that Jbed is a much superior JRE for the Pocket PC but there are a few files you need. There was a post awhile back here on the boards so credit goes to who ever figured this out (a freaking genius!)
You need to have two dll's in your windows directory. They are SMS.dll and Phone.dll. You simply need to unzip these files, copy them to your pocket pc's windows directory and restart your PDA. Once you do this you can install many of the HTC apps like HTC home, HTC today etc and Jbed.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

Thanks very much I'll try it.
That´s perfect! Thank you very much.
Now it works on hx4700 with WM6.1.
Glad to hear it!

CAn u plz tell me how i can install win 6 on my i mate jamin ????
Hello everyone
I'm a new HTC Touch HD user ( I bought it yesterday), I have been a palm user for almost 8 years!, and finally I took the step and change to windows mobile!!, principally because I need to work a lot with word, excel and emails on the go, and not always I can bring my laptop with me.
I have been reading diferent stuff about WM for around 10 hours, and it's quite diferent than the experience with palm OS, I think with Palm OS was much more easy to choose a software for each job!!
well I would like some help please:
1.- I need a good email software, which support many accounts and foulders to organice my emails just like outlook, I'm thinking in "seven" http://community.seven.com/viewforum.php?f=17
or just outlook mobile, but I would like to heard some oppinions before buy this last one.
2.- a good PDF reader, I need to read a lot of datasheets, and I need a software which can word wrap and be finger friendly. adobe reader LE coudn't do it, eather ubook, or maybe I'm doing something wrong? any idea about it?
3.- for GPS I'm thinking in buying IGO 8.3, it's a good choise?
4.- a good agenda software, and I think I will buy Pocket Informant, any coment?
well this is the most important thing for the moment, apart of this and only like a comment, I'm looking for a good clock with alarms, a good english and chinese dictionary, music player, movie player, picture view software, etc.
any help or comment will be apreciated
iGO8 its ,imho ,the best option. I have tryed TomTom but iGO beats it for far..
http://forum.ppcwarez.org/viewtopic.php?f=255&t=53127
For music and video u can choose coreplayer ! Enjoy!
Hi stranger!!!
Hi! i-m trying to bring my experience to this panel... i-m not an expert but have know both worlds, Palm and PPC devices... i-m own today a Samsung I900 Omnia runing under WM 6.1...
in my experience here you are some tips about your questions....
1) Outlook Mobile provided is good enough... it can manage messaging (SMS) and mailing (i have 4 emmails including hotmail, gmail, yahoo and a propietary one) without any problem... is something spartan if you understand but give you a peace of mind to search and found something more sophidsticated... may be u can try Fleximail...
2) My Omnia had a PDF reader File Wiewer that's good enough... i-m not shure is a standard in WM 6... try Pocket Adobe or Mobile Foxit intead....
3) GPS depends where are you use it!!! because of maps IGO is a good one if you use it in Usa or EUROPE... i-m in Argentina, South America, here Garmin XT rules because detailed maps that it works...
4) I have Pocket Informant and it's superb!!! another good one is Iambic Agendus Pro... i-m not shure rank of prices... both are excellent....
+ clock with alarms: SPB TIME or Ptravel Alarm
+english and chinese dictionary: True Term
+music player: sorry i like WMedia...
+movie player: again WM
picture view software: Pocket XNView or Resco
all topics are just an opinion, hopefully that give you some easy guideline and my english isn't zulu 4 u (MY TONGUE IS SPANISH) c u HERE OR @ WEB...
hugs from Argentina
Jorge
thanks tossero
I think I will check the maps of IGO and if they have good ones for Asia I will buy it
thanks jorgec333
mm, thanks for your advices, I didn't know Fleximail, I will check, about the agenda, yes I used to use agendus, its really good, but I didn't know was good for WM too.
BTW touch HDD came with adobe reader LE, which is really bad in my opinion, I will check the ones you recommended me!!
Hello all. Please help me! I wish to contribute to the development of cool apps for HTC devices/windows mobile devices, but I dont know which programming environment to use:
I have VB 6 and Vb.Net 2002. Is it possible to develop software for PPC using one of these? If so, exactly how and are their resources?
If not, What can I use and is there a low cost solution (I dont really want to buy .net 2008!)
Thank you!
Pocket Programming Language is worth a look:
http://www.arianesoft.ca/
PythonCE
PythonCE is just python on your PPC. You can develop your own program on your PC or on your PPC directly. I have started developing small apps on the PPC with PythonCE and I just love the feeling of developing on the PPC.
Anyway if you do not like the idea of scripting and interpreted languages at all, then you should work with at least VS 2005 I guess.
If you like hardwork, you can check CEgcc though.
I was a former Palm user and I liked the powerfull on board development tools there. I was able to program using a real C compiler (On Board C) or a real Pascal compiler on my Palm OS device. I wish we had such programs for our PPCs as well.
