what do you think i should use?
i dont know which is better, what do you prefer?
how do i switch from clockwork mod recovery to Amon Ra anyways?
The choice essentially boils down to personal preference. Amon-ra arguably has a nicer looking interface (I prefer it at any rate), while Clockwork integrates with Rom Manager. I currently have Amon-ra installed. You can flash Amon-ra from Rom Manager; the menu entry near the bottom should say "flash alternate recovery".
Another feature of Clockwork is that it allows the user to navigate through subdirectories to select the zip file to flash. Not a killer feature for me, but I'm not everyone.
Well that's not what to has at the bottom. It says ra something but the doesn't say amon ra recovery. Is amon ra recovery the alternative recovery? Hm, I have no idea how to do this. Help?
Sent from my HTC EVO
Stick with Amon, I don't think clockwork backs up the Wimax flash partition which is pretty big since people seem to be messing up their wimax radios/settings.
I don't even know how to get an amon ra recovery on my phone.
Sent from my HTC EVO
Ive been using amon_ra since I rooted and it's done me good so far. You can find a link to amon_ra's thread in my sig.
Install rom manager from the market. Then just press the flash alternate recovery. It should install
Amon's recovery. If that option is greyed out, install clockwork first, then the option to install the alternate recovery should be able to be selected.

You surely realize that you are asking a simple question in the Development forum, right?
You do realize there is a forum for questions, right? It's called ....... Evo 4G Q&A.
You do realize you are taking up someone's valuable time and making them MOVE YOUR post to the correct forum, when as a adult (?) you should have been able to do that in the first place, when you created the post.
Please... have some respect for these forums, create your posts in the appropriate forum, it's really not that hard to do.
Oh, wait I take all this back.....Your nym sounded familiar so went back and saw some of your posts to see why it rang a bell.
You're the guy with questions such as
Cm6, what is it?
Does unrevoked forever come with Nandroid?
Does anyone know how to do a nand backup?
Dude, you really should just stop creating any new posts and READ. Every question you've asked, are questions that should have been answered by doing the most basic of reading, BEFORE you even root your phone.

Most Custom Rom recommend Amon Ra, the main reason is because Clockwork Mod is known for not wiping the Davlik Cache properly.... My Personal choice is Amon Ra but I do use Clockwork from time to time...
BTW: Think this is a post for Q & A and not the Development area...
ARMON backs up wimax.ing which contain a copy of the RSA Private Keys, you lose these, no 4G, Clockwork does not.

I don't post alot, but I just don't understand why people can't leave "stupid questions" alone or just not respond to a "valid question" if its in the wrong forum. You may want to be a forum moderator, but you're not. And guess what? 9 times out of 10 (that's a guess) the real moderators will take care of it.
Well, though I think a few people were a bit rude telling you the way they did, they are right in the fact that this belongs in Q&A and not in development. No question is stupid unless is it absurdly obvious, since some prefer one to the other it is a valid question. It just happens to be posted in the wrong area. There are better ways to handle this, obviously what you got was not it.
In any case, I feel Amon RA is the superior of the two. It just works and has everything you need in a recovery. Plus, it has more options to fix problems built in than Clockwork does. Clockwork also has the "not sure if the Dalvik is wiped" issue which Amon RA does not. I used to use Clockwork until I had issues installing some ROMS, I switched to Amon RA and have never looked back. I do like the layout better in Amon RA as well and find it more readable.
Clockwork has two advantages: Able to read ROMS stored in any folder and it is integrated with ROM manager. One of not really a con (better and safer to do that through recovery than a program) and the other is meh, would rather have it on the root of the SD anyhow, ready to go, but that is just me. I think the advantages of Amon put it well ahead of Clockwork.
You can read my post (listed below) "Common misconceptions and other useful information". I am sure it can answer a lot of question you and lots of other people may have. I know a lot of people have told me they have found it useful.
Hope this helps, but please...next time post this in Q&A and save a (real) mod from having to move yet another post. Thanks!
I've said it before, don't know why they can keep people with low post counts from posting links but let any clown with a keyboard start a worthless thread. In the wrong area no less....

First off get off your high horse. There is no reason whatsoever for you to respond like this to anyone. And that goes for everyone else. Why not simply bypass the post and go look for whatever it is you were looking for. So what he put this in the wrong topic. Who was the idiot that open the thread up and wasted about 2-3 mintues coming up with why this should be somewhere else. Here's one for the QA were your parents related cause you seem pretty retarded?

Alright off my soap box I believe amon ra is the better choice. Because of the full wiping and overall better interface. Though rom manager works with clockwork. At least you can flash the other rcovery through that.

While this is an overall good community, you will get a lot of people who feel they need to police these forums (makes them feel good about themselves) and you always have want to be mods when it comes to forums.
The point is that there is ways to handle things and there is ways not to. I think it is obvious how NOT to handle things, that is why you should let the mods do their job and leave the rest up to us! If the mods handled things like this, there would be hardly anyone around!
It is funny, these same angry people can take the time to rant at the person yet cannot answer the question.
Hey guys,
im pretty new to custom ROMs and i cant ask this in the Starburst Thread because of the > 10 posts rule.
I currently have an older version of Starburst with Data2SD running perfectly on my Desire. Now theres a new version out and i want to update.
The things i would do now:
1. Nandroid backup everything of course.
2. Flash the new ROM
3. Immediately flash the Data2sd Reinstall zip
4. Profit ??
Will i keep all my apps and their settings with this method ?
Sorry for this low-level question but i couldnt find an answer anywhere to this.
Thank you.
That is correct!
Everything that you have asked is answered in the original post in the starburts thread

The 10 post rule ? Thats only for asking questions on a thread ?
It should not hamper your ability to read the thread ?
Its amazing what you can find out without asking questions ?
First of all thanks Raymond for your answer.
Thanks also to you mark for repeating what raymond said but instead with pointless flaming.
I hate people who cant read as much as the next guy but can you please show me where exactly in the Starburst OP the answer to my question is ? (I also read most of the thread, nothing there too.)
It seems like this knowledge is so basic that it doesnt get mentioned anywhere anymore.
Edit: Maybe I should have made my OP clearer: My only question was if i will keep all my apps and settings when flashing a new ROM version. Dunno why i repeated the installation steps, but my whole reason for this thread was to ask about the apps & settings, which doesnt get answered in the Starburst thread.
if you back up your stuff with something like mybackup you should be ok ? If you do a nand and the back up dont work you can alway use that ?
Best option to try if your feeling lucky is back up then nand then just flash over ? Worst that can happen is you need to restore the nand ?
oh people come on i really appreciate all the work your doing here but your talking about flashing custom roms and unlooking boot loader !!! and stuff like that but the thing is i don't even know how to install a cutom roms and i'm sure there r many guys like me out there so please be easy on us so here what i want to know and i'm sure if you answered this topic it's gonna be a useful one
1-do we need to backup out things from phone memory and sd card before unlocking our phones using the new htc dev thing ? and if yes so how to make a full back up ?
2- we will do the unlock boot loader thing and there is a good tutorials out there
3- after unlocking the boot loader i think we have to do a complete wipe or some thing like that and then flash a cutom rom right ? so please tell us how to do that wipe thing and install a rom and which rom is the most stable one out there
4- can i go back to the old rom which is htc 2.3.5 if i didn't like that boot thing
5- with custom roms is it posible to install apps from the market ? and what are the deferences in general between the 2.3.5 official and any rom i will install after rooting ?
thank you for reading this post all, i'm asking for is an easy 1 2 3 .... complete guide for noobs
Well, problem is not you guys are new. Neither your lack of knowledge about the topics.
Mostly the problem is that people do not read and open new threads for topics already existing. I wrote 2 tutorials and I think I wrote them a way new users can understand.
Using a searching machine or forums search is no advanced topic. When I was new to it all, I spend like 2-3 days of reading and finding out myself.
So, look at our point of view: we write tutorials that are detailed and answer questions all about in the respective threads. We can't write a whole tutorial again for everyone not willing to read.
And to almost all questions, there already is an answer. And I think if you want to do stuff with your phone you should search and read. then you still can ask questions. But often people come here this way: Hi, I'm new, now tell me exactly what I have to do.
theq86 first of all i appreciate your time
but you can't judge me !!!! i spent 2 days reading and searching all i could find was people talking about new roms and stuff like that and expressions that i don't understand
and i tried to the search tool btw if u type noob you will find tons of suggestions with no match topics
so i'm not taking the easy way or any thing
and rather than complaining from my post you can point me to those threads your talking about for new comers it would have been nice of u
I don't blame you in particular, I just give examples. So sorry if you understood it that way.
Well, here we go:

Yes, I'd recommend that. You can backup all your PIM data (calendar, cntacts, messages) with MyPhoneExplorer. If you have synced everything with google you can restore it afterwards with a full sync. But I'd recommend MyPhoneExplorer, because you have your data on pc then.
During the process of unlocking the phone and all of it's data will be reset!
2- we will do the unlock boot loader thing and there is a good tutorials out there

When you flash a custom rom, be sure to wipe the cache partition, the dalvik-cache and the data partition. otherwise bootloops or malfunctions could appear. Wiping all these is very easy once you have a custom recovery tool.
4- can i go back to the old rom which is htc 2.3.5 if i didn't like that boot thing

You can go back to stock rom. But this will not recover your warranty. You can even lock the bootloader again if you really wish. How to do so is stated in my bootloader unlock tutorial, too.
5- with custom roms is it posible to install apps from the market ? and what are the deferences in general between the 2.3.5 official and any rom i will install after rooting ?

Yes, in case you use the cyanogenmod rom you will have to insall the google apps manually, but market is available on every rom.
The differences between stock rom are manifold:
themes and designs can differ
custom roms often include fixes and tweaks to improve device speed, stability and battery life.
Most roms are debloated. So never used apps are removed.

thank you very much for your time i really appriciate it , but i still have some more questions
1- after unlocking my bootloader do i have to install a custom rom or can i keep using my current 2.3.5 i understand that it will be like starting from scratch
2- what is the clock recovery mod and where to find it and how to use it " in this question i'm using the easy way beacuse i know i'll find info about this thing if i searched the fourm but who want's to take the hard way thank's to you "
3- i've read some thing about adding an sd card partition to the phone memory or some thing like that please give me a full description about this thing and can i add this partition to my current stock rom after unlocking the bootloader with out installing a custom rom if it's possible ?
oh sorry i forgot 1 more question
people are saying that cyeanogen rom is the best but i keep reading that it's not an official realese and the radio and wirless and camera etc ... is not worknig but there is the 7.2 version i saw recntly on the dev section which is said to work perfectly so is it stable ? it it fast ? do you recomend me to use it ? i'm asking this question beacuse i noticed you r a cyanogen mod fan
and to install any rom of course i'll have to do these steps
1- flash the clock recovery mod which you will point me to how to use it
2- flash the custom rom and that's every thing
and to flash these things i but them on the root folder on my sd and disable the fasy boot option then turn of the phone and power t up holding the volume down button and it will do the magic am i right ?
Search on marketplace for clockwork mod - use it to boot to recovery mode - then, if you have a flashable zip rom stored in the root folder of your phone you can just flash the rom from there - best to backup and wipe first

Mate, you're going to get the same from everyone as it's been answered a thousand times before. In a nutshell, update your recovery to the latest if not already and then read up on why Google has set this new folder structure up
Google took 0.3 seconds to find me this...
http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/35541/why-did-sdcard-turn-into-sdcard-0-with-4-2
Perhaps USE the Internet to find your answer in future - it'll stop you getting flamed

That's not what the OP says now is it!?!?!
The old folders will be left behind but they should be copied into the '0' folders as well. It's easier to format and then restore the data using TB or something similar (I'd imagine, I don't game on my phone so never worry about it!!)
As for Zepius - he probably didn't see what I'd posted

this. cause you edited your post
The 0 folder has always been there for 4.2 plus. It's for multi user. If you had searched and actually read a thread or two you'd know that.
You'd also know to either live with it since it's the future or get rid of it the usual way.
That's why everyone is (correctly, might I add) telling you to search.

Maybe you should do a little reading of your own, like to what i posted, i Dont care about the 0 folder, im trying to say i CANT ACCESS MY DATA cause there is a 0 folder and All the android folders do you not understand?! whats with people being so aggresssive you cant even get help .. this is what a forum is for .... youre telling em to search but i keep getting multiuser 0 ... i dont care about that ... read my post THEN reply ... dont assume after seeing 0 i am just asking what the 0 folder is for .. i know its for multi user i can read ...
Edit: Honestly forget this thread, clearly you cant come here to ask questions without being attacked to use the search button as if its wasting your time and money ... didnt know this was a place for only professionals that know everything there is to know about anything ... will ask else where next time ...
Then why didn't you remove it yourself? There is an entire thread dedicated to getting back to the old file structure?

1) it has nothing to do with not being able to ask question, it has to do with following the rules of the forum. if you had said you looked at some of the threads by using search and didnt find the answer you needed, it would be different. the fact that your original post just had to do with the structure of the /0/ folders and not where your game content was pulling it from made a difference
2) this forum was originally founded for development for the O2 XDA phone so they could unlock the extra features, it was not started as a helpdesk
3) your mannerism/response are the reason people are being hostile towards you. the fact that you stated refused to use search said it all.
I intend to keep my 2014 stock.
Is there any point/benefit in installing a custom recovery?
Thanks,
If you intend to keep using only ROM updates from Samsung, and do not intend to flash things such as superSU or an update.zip from titanium backup with all your apps in it, then you have absolutely no need for a custom recovery.
Seriously, if you need to ask that question you don't need a custom recovery...

Whether you think it's snarky, I didn't intend it to be, it is true. If you need something then you wouldv'e, through thate need, found out what it is for and how to do it...
It's like people asking about if they need to root their device, they have no idea what it's for thus have no need for it. A small bit of research will tell you what these things do but people ask the same questions over and over. If you want to find out what these things do, go to the source without asking what it's for.
These questions have been asked SOOOOOOO many times before....
