I have been spending the last 2 weeks flashing rom after rom (mainly HERO ROMs) and i bored of them
i want to go back to the Cyanogen 4.0.2 ROM and i see all these people applying themes with ease. how do you do this?
when i had my stock Mytouch NON ROOT i had to download an app called OPEN HOME and then download themes from the ap store but OPEN HOME made my phone so slow so i got rid of it. (even though i paid for it)
i just want a nice clean rom with a clean theme (i like that new google chrome theme i saw)
never mind, i got it. didnt know it was as easy as just copying it to your SC card and going into recoveyr mode and hitting update.
if i want to change themes often can i just copy the new theme to the SD card and go into recovery >update every time? or do i need to reflash the Cyanogen ROM first before doing a new theme every time?
i read somewhere where someone said they were just flashing themes over each other and something messed up and someone told them to reflash the Cyanogen ROM but NOT do a WIPE and they would be good.

i was wondering the same
i always wipe when i change themes. just because i dont want to deal with the headaches later if something from the old theme messes with the new theme. but i'm no expert.
My Kingston 16G class 10 sd card actually physically cracked and is therefore defunct but they will be replacing it within the week - but I do not have it backed up on my PC .
I had rooted my Incredible with Unrevoked 3 and had been experimenting with a couple of Froyo ROMs : Cyanogen6 and Skyrider 2.5. and I had just updated my Clockwork Mod Recovery and I had made full use of Apps2sd.
Now, when I put my old SanDisk 2G sd back in, it only had 1 nandroid backup on it and I am back to:
Firmware 2.1
Baseband 2.05.00.06.11
Kernel 2.6.29.....
PRI 1.28
Clockwork Recover 2.5.0.1
and while I still have some apps and my phone and wifi seem to be working fine:
I don't have Market, Rom Manager, Titanium (but I still have SuperUser). Also, when I USB my phone to PC - the PC doesn't see either. At this point, I don't even know if I'm rooted or have busybox.
I'm really puzzled as to what I should do next:
I don't know whether to do a phone restore from Settings or, perhaps from Recovery?
Or, do I want to try reinstalling Rom Manager and one of the Froyo Roms. But would that get me Market back? In all cases I'm gonna have to reinstall most of my apps since most resided (at least partially) on the dead sd. Fortunately appbrain has a record of all my apps. - but, from what I understand, there's no way to install the Market, except via HTC/Google/Verizon.
So, I probably won't have my new 16G card for almost a week and I'm very open to suggestions as to my best plan of attack
I guess I should also think about repartitioning the new sd - according to the recent lag fixes.
Please keep in mind that I'm pretty much command line challenged - so (perhaps foolishly) - I am doing all of this on the phone itself.
I recently downloaded SDK to my PC and I was just getting ready to try to get the hang of adb, the emulator etc - but I'm hoping I can get my phone back to where I had it before I get into that.
Thanx in advance for any help you can provide.
To be honest if you have to time to, just start all over.
Get the stock RUU and just wipe everything. Then unrevoked 3 again and start re-install / re-setup.
The appbrain app list will come in handy as soon as you get everything back to where it was.
That's just what I would do. It seems like the simplest solution from where you are at, but I'm no expert by any means.
Best of luck,
Flawless
Edit: Also about every week or so I copy my most recent Nandroid off my SD card and back it up to by harddrive. Just in case I ever need anything, like an old APK or old kernel or something. Just as a safety precaution although it may seem kind of redundant.

Thanx!
That was kinda what I suspected.
Where's the best site to get the stock RUU? I see several.
Are you telling me that now that I have the Clockwork Recovery that if I go to Settings > Privacy > Factory Data Reset - that I will no longer be restored to the original Google/HTC/Verizon stock phone?
Is it the same as if I go into Recovery > wipe data/factory reset which looks like it will go iinto Clockwork Mod v2.5.0.1 - which I don't don't whether it includes Market.
I managed to get USB bootloader to see hboot, reran Unrevoked 3, Cyanogen 6RC3 and Gapps and all is well Thanx!
I have been having all sorts of problems with my phone, mainly from it running super low on storage space, even though I have moved virtually everything to the SD card that I can, and keep wiping the address book (which of course screws everything up). Some kind folks had helped me out a lot, but in the end suggested I just wipe it all and start over, but I was waiting to get a new SD card, which I finally have, and I just wanted to make sure I understand everything correctly before leaping in.
So I understand I need to format the SD card, and I was hoping someone could give me or point me to a guide to doing so. I understand I need to get A2SD, is that right? And so once I format it, I can just put everything on my old card onto the new one, yeah? And I understand I need to install Amon RA and get rid of Clockwork Mod, I get that. So then after I do all that, I should just flash a new ROM and not restore anything, and if things seem better, then I can batch restore apps, is that right? I think I just want to stick with the stock ROM, but is there a rooted version of the latest update available?
If someone would be so kind as to walk me through this one last time, keeping in mind I am pretty much a noob, that would be much appreciated.
Oh, I also would love to do the Firerat custom MTD partitions thing (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=855424), tried to do it once before but screwed some things up, had to revert back to a previous backup, so figured now would be a good time to try that again, so if anyone can give me the rundown on that too, that would be super.
Thanks so much!
im gonna try and help you here, first back up everything you have on your sd card to your computer so you dont loose it when partitioning, then download a PCIMG36.zip of amon ra, put it on sd card and boot into bootloader and select yes when prompted, that will put amon ra as your recovery. now that you have amon ra and already backed up the stuff in your sd card to your computer go ahead and in recovery selcect partition sd card, its gonna ask you for a swap size( i use 0 but you can use 32 if you like, 0 works fine), then its going to ask for partition size for me 1024 is more than enough(1024 equals 1gb), once this is done, select upgrade ext2 to ext3. now your sd card is partitioned. you can go ahead and put all your stuff back into your sd card and flash the rom(for a2sd to work your rom has to have it built in, other wise you are going to have to flash it) if your rom has it built in it will automatically kick in. once your rom is flashed you can go ahead and restore apps, i would do them one by one, sometimes there are issues when doing batch, and also unless the app is really important i would only restore the app not its data, but i do restore app and data for important apps. if all goes well you should have a lot more free memory on your phone, you can check if apps are going to sd ext by opening titanium back up and at the bottom you should see sd a2sd or sd ext and next to it amount of free memory, if your phone internal is still low after all this and gets lower when installing apps you can fix it by going into terminal emulator and typing
su (hit enter)
a2sd reinstall (hit enter, this will move all apps to sd ext)
any more questions ust ask
With the new 2.1/3.0 hybrids, you're better off using larger partitions. I found swap 64 or 128 and EXT of 2048 works out better, if you have an 8gig or larger SD Card
Thanks so much for the quick responses! I am going to give this a shot later tonight, but another quick question.
I think I've got down how to partition it, thanks a lot for breaking that down for me. And I did just get a 32 GB SD card, so I'll go with the 128 swap and EXT of 2048, that's no big deal.
Now for what ROM to flash - I've just used the stock before, haven't flashed any other ROMs, but if I'm going this far, figure I might as well give it a try, why not. So what ROM would you recommend that has A2SD already built in?? If you could just give me a quick run down (or point me to somewhere where there is one, I'm sure it already exists) on how to go about flashing the ROM (I think I just download it though and install it through bootloader, is that right??), that would be super appreciated.
Thanks again!!
Roms are flashed through recovery and what Rom to use wow that will get you a lot of opinions.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
man there are so many roms for so many tastes, but i would suggest Vaelpak 3.2 rc2 which is still a sense rom, but has a lot of customization options. to flash your fresh rom you need to put the rom on your sd card, then turn off phone, go into bootloader, go into recovery, select wipe, and wipe cache, dalvik cache and data, do each twice to make sure, then go back and select flash zip from sd card, scroll to the bottom and look for the rom, select it and reboot
Once again, thanks for the replies and the detailed explanation, much appreciated. Didn't get around to it last night, will do so tonight. I definitely understand there are a ton of ROMs out there, but am just looking for something pretty simple I guess, since all I've used is the stock so far. Vaelpak 3.2 rc2 sounds good, I'll give that a try. So just to make sure I understand, when I install this ROM, that's everything, right, so I don't need to worry about installing the latest Android software. Or do I still need to install the latest Gingerbread update (and if so, how do I go about doing that?) in addition to installing this ROM?
Sorry for the million questions, and thanks again!
VaelPak is a very extensive ROM. If you REALLY want to stay close to stock, but have the most updated, complete, streamlined, error free experience, go with Synergy or MikG.
I LOVE VaelPak, but there is a LOT of options, themeing, development, etc in there. It's definitely not for a beginner. Also, his newest release, which is based in GB is pretty awesome, but it's an AOSP Rom, which I'm not a fan of.
Hi all,
So this is really strange, I feel like I must just be missing something, but I finally pulled the trigger, did it all, flashed my first ROM (exciting!) and all seems to have gone smoothly, except that I cannot figure out how to access Titanium Backup?!? I thought it came with MikG (I decided to give that ROM a shot), but did not see it, so went to the Market and re-downloaded it, and it says downloaded, but I cannot click on "open" and it is nowhere to be found in the apps list, or anywhere for that matter. Help! What the heck is going on? Any thoughts?
Thanks much!
Did you have a notification saying "Titatium Backup Installed" or something like that? I've had the same problem in the Gingersense roms if I leave the market before the download AND installation is complete. Not every time but sometimes.
I was just being a little slow there, I had installed the key, but not the actual program. Oops So all good, got that working, but a couple quick more questions.
Sadly it seems that I did not have TB set to backup everything on a regular basis, looks like it was just set up to backup new apps and new versions (yikes!, I know). So I've been restoring some apps little by little, and when I restored Angry Birds I noticed I was stuck back on the first level and I was like, this isn't right, looked at the date, and last backup was like March/April. This is kind of a drag for some things, like that, and especially beyondPod, lost all my settings and a number of feeds there, but I think it's probably just something I'm going to have to live with, right? I of course made a nandroid right before I wiped and flashed, but it seems like even more of a hassle to go back to that nandroid, backup things to Titanium, then reflash MikG and restore everything again, rather than just recreating what I've lost, right? Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something, there's no other way around this.
Thanks for any assistance.
On a different thread i asked for help with regards to pin locked. While under GB i used pin lock with Go locker and also stock. Never had an issues. Since ICS update, as my other thread my screen will lock with Samsung pin lock with no matter what i am doing. So is getting extremely annoying. I have done 5 factory reset, 2 after finally rooting my phone. Now it has being weeks since ICS and i am still with the problem.
Trying to live with it, but now daily is getting more annoying since now is really asking for pin like every min. I went on a trip over the weekend. While using telenav, the phone ask for pin over 30 times within the 3 hour drive.
Now at this point, with TBU i have already removed but backup 5 bloatware and froze the most. Here is my question, what or how can i bring the phone to clean factory setting. Including formatting the card. Do know i checked it while under the other resets and never formatted.
I am hoping that with a new clean, swype, or whatever steps i can take to completey clean my phone of anything and everything it will fix this issue.
Any thoughts?

What delay are you using before pin lock comes on? Try and step it up a bit longer
i already tried the delay. Heck i even called tmobile and they couldnt figure it out. It happens while using it, meaning, i will be typing a text, and pin locks comes up, searching the net, using an app, anything, it will happened back to back. Especially installing an app. I will be on play store, download an pp, try to install it and pin lock will come up. And no just pin lock, i change it to lines, facial, and just slide and they all do it.

Have you tried darkside wipes and fresh installs without restoring TB data?
well there was no removal or installation with TB after the last factory reset. So here are my questions.
1. What is the different between, Clockworkmod recovery wipe/factory reset and the ICS actual factory reset?
2. I know i used Darkside cache wipe to fix my hanging failures after root with permission fix too. What would Darkside wipe do?
I just want to do anything and everything to clean my phone completely and start fresh while keeping root access. Also, if resetting the phone, should i reinstall all bloatware i uninstall using TB?
Any thoughts?
So, it seems that my problems, after visiting so many sites, as all know including this one, there is no solution. Except one. Since i am rooted, i might as well and crab my cojones and install a custom rom. This might help me removing everything and starting fresh.
Can any reassure me that i am not so stupid and i wont brick my phone? lol
Can anyone suggest a great rom? i dont care in regards to battery life and such, after reading under android development, i think all roms give just about the same. But maybe there is one that has being favor by most. And i noticed way too many under Android development.
Also, do all rom come with kernels, radio and all the necesary for the T989? or would this be things i will have to obtain separate?
I know i will be doing another nanbackup, using TBP for app backup as well as backup pro. But, should i reinstall all bloatware that i unistalled with TBP?
Thanks in advance for the time some have given me here by helping me.
I use the Infamous rom and it's been stable and worked well for me, though you will get several answers on this. Everyone likes something different. Since you are already on ICS, your radio should be fine. The roms all come with kernels. If possible, install your apps fresh from the market, sometimes there are issues when you use TB to restore apps or data.
Make sure to grab the darkside super wipe and darkside cache wipe tools. The first post in each rom thread should have flashing instructions (they are not all the same, some require flashing google apps, some have them baked in already).
Infamous is fiyahhhh power. Can't get enough and cant wait til next update. Its gonna be the ish!!! But don't stick to one rom. Try em all and choose for yourself. What I like might not be the same you like. Good luck

So i want to install a custom rom, but before i do i wan to another nand. I am trying to restore the following app which i uninstall with TBP (Talkbalk, voice command, and yahoo finance) however, it has being already 30mins since i click on Talkbalk and restore and until this point, right now is 749p (30 mins later) TBP it still saying restoring APP+Data talkbalk 3.0.2.
What can i do here? i am afraid of not uninstalling the following add and if i brick or want to go back to stock i wont be able to. Also, i did notice that i have little to no space under my system/app, i recall only install S Voice, but i dont even find that system/app, so i do not know what is taking all the space when i unistall 3 apps.
any suggestions?
no one has any ideas what i should do? or how can i get this programs reinstall?

If your still around, give me specifics of what you want done and I'll do my best to point you in the right direction. I'm not a dev but I can help you even if it means starting from scratch.
1) to reset back to factory. Look up a Google site called galaxys2root.com and find you model. Follow the instructions. You be back to factory. After you done all of that factory reset your phone from within the settings menu. You will erase everything on your phone minus your external SD card.
2) on the same site re root your phone and install superuser. It has a step by step guide of this as well.
3) search the forums on xda and find your device and the roms that are supported for your specific device.
4) you want to find darkside super wipe and darkside cache wipe. Install both on your SD card. Your get used to using both this tools.
5) choose the rom of your liking and install on your SD card.
6) follow ops instructions about install without any changes. Don't change any of the steps. If you do not follow the steps It will make the the install not work correctly.
7) BE PATIENT. Let the rom settle in your phone. After you install everything, make sure you fix permissions so that way everything falls into place.
..... this is the way I have done it and yet to have an issue. Your best bet is to read EVERYTHING. Don't just skim thru the original post and just go by the screenshots and choose just cuz it looks cool. Research all the thread to find out what issues are there and what not.
Last but not least thanks the dev or devs involved in the rom, tools, kernels that you decide to use. Their doing all of this for free. And I feel like I need to say this even tho I know it sound very minor. But Google is your best friend.

Hello all, I have refered to this site many times and now need assistance with my MT3G
First off, thank you zeubea and the rest for all your work. I tried to ask my question in the developers section but...
I hope you see this post and can guide me along.
Background: I'm ok w pc's, have built and repaired/recovered my own for sometime. But this phone stuff is new teritory to me.
I got my slide mebbe 3 yrs ago? But as phones go I have yet to find one that I like as much. The key board captures my hunt n peck thumb style intuitivly. The weight and feel, and size, seems as right as can be, for me. The only thing I disliked was the carrier
I had studied, and studied this site and others trying to learn how to root. This isnt the best phone to learn on huh lol. So after asking several associated at outlet malls (soory, we can't assist you with that type of request) I found a guy at a pc store that confidently said "no problem, we can take care of that for you." Awesome! The price, $120 US. worth it to me.
2 weeks later, my phone was ready. He did great, I will lay out the specs below. But, when I asked if he could now do it again for less having done it once, his reply was " man, that was a @#$&^, I wont do it again, you have the only one that will come from our shop, but I assure you that you wont find anything like it at starbucks..." Wow...
So first, heres what I have, and then my problem..
Build number is: cm_espresso-userdebug 4.0.4 IMM76L
eng.zuebea.20120618.005058 test-keys
Version: 9-20120617-UNOFFICIAL-espresso
That probably tells you alot of where the phone is. In its apps screen I see dev toolsrom manager and superuser, along with several others.
The phone appears to function as described by the others at the same stage ie: the fn key works as long as it is held when using, no keyboard backlight wifi calling f/c's 4 times upon boot up (I LUV that little guy ) Screen keyboard a bit cut off etc...
So my problem: I was not provided a sdcard when I received my phone. Coulda sworn there was an 8 gb in it when I left it, but oh well. I have a new 8 gb sd card, sandisk. but dont know what to do. I dont want to lose the work that went into this phone. But I cant seem to download any apps from the market or play store
ALSO, I dont currently have a sim card, I plan on getting a pay as I go plan when I get this figured out.
I am unsure about the whole partitioning the sd card thing, as well as how to do it, and wether it is done with cwm or what? The guy who did it suggested titanium back up, but again, cant download. ( Yes I do have wifi at home and it connnects and browes internet superbly)
I have formatted the sd card to fat32, and see all sorts of apps running in cache.
I believe that is about it. I know this is a long read, but I wanted to be clear so you could assist. Thank you...
EDIT: I was assured that we did get S off..,.
update
New guy still here, and for all my reading, I dont feel my confidence level has increased any as far as messin with this phone. I kno I can do it once it all makes sense and maybe after a run thru it will seem easy.... "sigh", any input from you who have been there done that will be greatly appreciated.
Since my above post (this makes #2, 8 to go ), heres whats progressed.
I bought a T-Mob pay as you go SIm card and can now call and text with my phone. That much seems to work fine. I have a 8 gb micro sd card installed which was formatted fat 32 on my pc first. Befor I got the sim card, the phone would appear to download apps but they would never actually load, just went thru the motions. Now, with the sim installed, I get this dialog box from google stating several possible reasons that I'm not getting nothing from them at this time. Well I think I know what the problem is, just dont know how to fix it, which brings me to the last bit of update to include. I was able to get a reply from zeubea himself, and tho it was short and sweet, and I appreciate that he took time at all to assist, I am in need of help understanding what to do...
zeubea said:
it is possible you have to reinstall the last version of cm9 for espresso and gapps, with proper wipes of /data /system and dalvik chache an /sdcard partitioning is no necessary for a testing setting. /sdcard partitioning is made with CWM
check in CWM thread in espresso threads or in other more active thread of similar devices as legend, wildfire s or aria.

So I am guessing its gapps that is preventing me from downloading apps. What I am asking for is a step by baby step proceedure, taking me by my hand and guide me thru all this so I learn without messing up. Please, if anyone can make sense of all this and assist, I'll be the most humble student ever...
Thank you...
As far as I am aware you don't need to root the phone after its been rooted (unless you flash T-mobile's kernel .. but lets not get ahead of ourselves). Rooting unlocks the phone's admin and allows you to install and uninstall things you wouldn't be able to without admin control. However, rooting does NOT unlock a network locked phone. There are some ways to do this I'm sure, but rooting a phone itself would not automatically unlock it from a network if it was locked to begin with. Now lets assume your phone is both rooted and network unlocked. Now you can install custom ROMS (Operating Systems), etc.
I would highly recommend you download Cyanogenmod over other custom ROMs in terms of stability, ease of use and beginner-user friendly. You can get it here -> link. This guide by the CM team gives full instructions -> link.
Most custom ROMs come without the Google Apps. To download and install apps, you need Google Play Story (previously known as Google Market), though other ways to install exist as well but are slightly more complicated. When you install a custom ROM, in most cases, you also need to install Google Apps AFTER installing the ROM. You do this the same way as installing a ROM, through CWM (Clockwork Mod recovery). Do you know how to do this? Read the guide above for details. Depending on what Android Version you have, you need to download the appropriate gapps (Google Apps) file and flash (i.e install) that after the ROM. This should install Market (or as its now known, Play) on your phone and will let you install apps.
You don't need an SD card to install. But this phone is notorious for its small space. Just turn the phone off (to be safe), take the battery cover off and insert an SD card into the phone. After boot, it should recognise and be able to use your card normally. It will not effect anything and you can move some apps to your SD card to save some space. However, this doesn't save as much as possible and so some users partition the SD card and use Apps or scripts to make the phone use the SD card as an extension of its phone memory and free up space.
I know whats a lot of information but do have a look at the link and then if you have any more questions, ask. Its quite easy to root and you really shouldn't have to pay someone (especially such a high amount) just to root your phone.
I hope I've been helpful. If so, don't forget the Thanks button!
