Search fix? - About xda-developers.com

As a respectful newb, I try to search as much as possible before asking questions, but in some respects it seems the search is not as effective as it should be. I hope this thread isn't a repeat because I have searched it, as ironic as that would be (you'll understand as you read). I know that on forums, especially ones as busy as this, searches are limited by word length/content or something like that. This limits some people (especially those with limited vocabulary on these topics). For example (not dealing with vocabulary at all): My touch pro is my GPS, therefore while looking for a new Rom, gps ability or the ability to run the latest radios (patches or w/e) is very important, but while searching "gps", xda search turns back no results. I have to go through the google search, which isn't specific to ROM threads. It's a bit difficult to ctrl+f 50+ pages in each rom forum only to find it hasn't been discussed. Basically, could the moderators change the forum's search ability? Things like tf3d, gps, etc do not return adequate threads/posts.
This next part is more of a question than a proposal, but would it be possible to show, on each person's post, when they answered a person's question last? I know there's no quick way to see whether a post was a question or answer, but if it could be done, selfish people would be unable to benefit from people here and only those who contribute would be helped. Of course people would have to choose whether or not to answer someone's question if the asker hasn't answered a question in a month. Basically, newbs couldn't answer hard questions, but they could answer other newb (newber than them) questions. I think it could help. Sorry, I just had a thought and figured I'd share it. I'm just sad that a particular chef might be done because of selfish people and I wish I could've helped or could help the problem that angers alot of people. Sorry if it's not possible ( I don't know much about forum moderation or creation)

The software this site run's on (vBulletin) limits what searches can be performed. I've lost count of the number of times I try and search for something with a TLA and I cannot find it. There is a "Google" search facility that will search the whole forum - just click the main search button at the top right and use the box there.
Oh, and we moderators just moderate, changes to the forum will require the invervention of the admin.

It is possible for people to use post and thread Icons, but it's not enforced as a rule.
For example
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
can be used for questions and maybe
for answered.
I'll drop the Q&A guys a PM about this, it might be a good idea for the Q&A forum at least.
Thanks

[request]XDA-DEV Thread Button Link

Hi xda-dev,
I just thought if we could have us thread owners to have a standard button design for a specific thread that we can use/link in our blog post or websites?
Just a thought ..
And, while on the subject: Is an RSS feed going to be made avail in new version ?

I think that's a great idea. But could you clarify: Are you speaking of the same basic concept on news sites where various social-media icons are avail to auto-repost? (twitter, digg, etc)... Or do you mean a button that performs the action of copying the thread's link & title to the clipboard, then being able to paste it anywhere on your own site, manually, into a blog post etc?

SLIGHTLY OFF-TOPIC:
I'm WAY behind the curve in using twitter, and how it integrates with what seems like 1000 different twitter-based apps... And twitpics, i'm even less clear on how and WHEN to use it, and if it's used WITH twitter, or a parallel service to twitter for just sharing photos in real time.
ON-TOPIC
So I'm not clear if your posting that image on twitpic is literally an example what you want to be able to do, or are you saying there are apps for either phone or desktop computer that will generate a template graphic as well a specific thread title linked? So, in your picture, is the thread title generated as part of the graphic itself? Or is the thread title displayed in HTML on top of the template graphic?
I am really confused but I like the way it looks! please explain further...
Okay, so now I see this, in your prior sig file.. and I see that it is a graphic that gets generated with the title of the thread rendered as part of the image... so i just have never seen these used -- but I love the idea...
So for this example here:
tell me how that gets generated -- at http://www.twitstamp.com ? and then when you apply that generated graphic, how do you also code the link to the thread, in this example?
even more confused and feeling so behind the times !
well whaddayaknow -- this looks like a pretty cool web app ! ---
so are you speaking of ...
(1) You're here at XDA-devs, and you're on, for example, this very thread...
(2) You'd like to see a simple small graphical button, as part of "thread tools" or somewhere within the thread page layout, that when you click on it, it grabs the Title of the thread, and the link, copies it to pasteboard...
(3) then you go to a site like, for example, TwitStamp.com, and insert what's on the pasteboard into the "input box" at Twitstamp...
(4)... thereby generating a graphic with link that can be embedded anywhere on a webpage etc, exactly as you would grab embed code from a YouTube video, or from a photo at photobucket.com, stuff like that?
(5) Is this kind of small-file-size "picture status" thing being rapidly used as a way to post updates, but using twitpics? So that after you generate the graphic, you post it to twitpics? And those who subscribe to your feeds can see "oh cool, that sounds like an interesting thread, i want that for my phone"... and so they would click on it and link to the thread here at XDA?
even more confused by all the permutations of pasting what where... hah hah.
Is this what you mean exactly, or is it close, or is this just one of many examples of what you are envisioning?
sounds & looks interesting....

I really am interested in learning about how people are using these kind of twitstamps... I went and registered. I don't know what else to say, I like this idea -- and I really would like for you to answer my questions, all of them, because if I "getting" it correctly, I like it. Samfirmware issues.
I am not pretty sure on the Samfirmware links as it was in the spotlight a few days ago behind the scenes of the XDA Dev forums. So I need time to revise the clauses put by my seniors over there and then open/action/delete the thread.
As for now, Inconvenience is Regretted.

Thinking of posting a new thread?
Search the whole forum using the search button.
Not having any luck searching? Remember that this is a computer. If you want to know why your having an error and people keep telling you to HardSPL, search "HardSPL HD" or "HardSPL Blackstone" or "HSPL Blackstone" etc
If any mod, including myself, continue to find new threads about topics that have threads already existing.
The thread will be locked with no notice and/or the user will get a temporary BAN!!.
Mods, including myself, are not able to see/do everything. We need your help to keep things organized, clean and grouped. Having an organized forum helps new members find help easier and keeps older members from getting gray hairs.
To the dedicated members that care to keep this and all other forums clean, organized and grouped:
Please start reporting threads to the mods to take action. Using this button.

It appears a reminder may be in order, about the purpose of the development forum.
If you have developed a ROM, or are working with others to do so, it's somewhere to discuss and share ideas, post useful feedback and logs or crash dumps, and to discuss a common goal developers are trying to receive.
It is NOT the place to post your question because it gets higher traffic, or because more experienced users frequent it. Doing this just annoys those who are working on the device, and drives them away.
If you are posting in development, you should have read every sticky and notice there, and should be actively developing or helping in the development of something.
For example, if you find a leak of a new ROM, which isn't already posted, and you verify it's legitimacy via either running it, or based on the source you obtained it from, then this is assisting in development. If you want to ask when a leak will be available use search first, then if not already in discussion, open a thread in general or Q&A.
If you have a problem flashing a ROM, this is NOT related to development. It's up to you to determine if it is specific to a particular ROM, and post useful information in that developer's existing thread for the ROM. If it happens on more than one ROM, and isn't a known issue (remember you should read several times more words than you post), then find out what you are doing wrong. Check guides written by others, try to repeat the problem and see if it happens every time.
Once you have identified what you need help with go to the device Q&A forum (general if device lacks one), and make a clear, informative thread that explains the issue, and what you have tried doing to fix it. Did you re-download the ROM? Did you ask a friend to flash it for you, to reduce chance of user error? What steps (exactly) did you follow? What errors did you see (exact wording) etc...
If you make a clear, concise, yet detailed post, you will find help forthcoming, and should get the problem sorted very quickly. If someone suggests you try something, report back on what happened, did it work etc. Then, next time someone has this issue and searches, they will find this and have a verified and tested solution.
So remember... before you start a thread in development, ask yourself what you are developing.
What does this mean??

It means that Samfirmware is an external site accessing XDA.We are currently investigating the topic with the Admins and the Owners because Samfirmware breaks some clauses of the rule framework framed on XDA.
This means that you have to wait for the further actions from us,Inconvenience is regretted...
And please learn to read this thread and POST IN CORRECT SECTIONS. We have worked endlessly to make this site very easy to operate and use.Do not create a mess.
What does this mean:This means you haven't read the rules,so please go through the rules,rule # 11 in this case.
Again, we will investigate asap and decide on the fate of the thread. Please keep calm and help us work efficiently and make this site free from controversies.
Thanks and have a nice day ahead.
If you have any doubts on this,you may publically discuss this topic with me in this thread or PM me...I wont let you down in any way although i will take my own time to respond coz i am not online 24/7.
Any further assistance on this if at all needed by all the members, you'll may contact me or my seniors too.
This post is not to be taken as a harsh reply to all or to a particular user. Sorry if anyone misunderstood my way of putting down things.
Again, Inconvenience is duly Regretted...Sorry and Thanks for being patient.

11. Don’t post with the intent on selling something.
As an elaboration to rule number 7, don’t use XDA to advertise your product or service. If you are the proprietor of a for-pay product or service, you may use XDA to get feedback, provide beta access, or offer support on the product, but you may not make any posts with the primary intent of selling. This includes posting press releases, announcements, or links to downloads for trial software; the only exception to this is when you’re posting an exclusive release to XDA. Off-site downloads are permitted as long as the site does not require a fee or mandatory registration to access the content.

[REQ] Rate posts and filter by rating, so you can filter out off-topic posts

Dear admins/website developers,
It would be a really nice feature to be able to rate a post.
-1 off topic/offensive
0 off topic/irrelevant
+1 on topic
+2 on topic/informative
+3 on topic/must read
Something like that. They use it on the dutch website tweakers.net and it's really handy.
By filtering out the off topic posts. You have a much cleaner view of the thread.
The user is free to choose the level of rating. For example I wan't to read the "thank you's".
I set the viewing level to 0 offtop/irrelevant.
But if I would be a developer I would set it to +1 or +2, so I could easily read up on new developements users have made or requested.
Ofcourse the rating of the posts has to be done by users themselves.
And they themself have to be rated as well (their credibilty).
If one user A rates a post -1, but five other users rate that post +1. The credibilty of user A goes down.
I think this is a really nice way to clean up a thread.
Popular rom threads get spammed so fast with "thank you's" and/or questions, that there's hardly keeping up with the actual developing discussion, bug reports, fixes, etc.
Cheers,
Daan

I know but I don't think it's appropriate to report a "thank you" post
What I meant was, viewing a thread on different levels.
Normal, informative and developement. Or somethng like that.
Now that I think about it you could indeed skip the -1 and just report offensive posts to the mods.
Mods will still have to remove it. Not a big deal ofcourse, probably takes 2 minutes.
But with the system above that is no longer necessary. Users become the mods in a way.
Cheers,
Daan

Nothing wrong with reporting "Thanks" posts in my opinion. I do it all the time. Dev threads get cluttered up enough without having newbies clutter it up with "Thanks" or "ETA?".

That's exactly what I mean.
Wouldn't it be nice if you, the user, could mod the post.
That way you won't have those annoying cluttered up threads anymore.
The posts are still there, but you filter them out to your own needs.
I think the biggest issue with your idea (which I like, btw) is the server overheads. You're basically asking for every single thread to have its own dedicated view. I've seen similar types of features in sites like Stack (I use Stack Overflow quite a lot) and it works very well for them, but they're not forums - they're purely Q&A sites and they discourage discussion. While that difference is not particularly pertinent to your suggestion I do think you're thinking of this site more along their terms.
The mods are there for a reason, and as tedious as it may be, cleaning threads is one of their tasks. Just report things that are out of place.

A quick fix would be to use the XDA Toolbar for Chrome. You can collapse posts, sigs, and images. It's probably going to be more to your liking than us telling you that XDA isn't going to implement this feature.
[20-Dec-11] XDA Toolbar for Chrome v1.7
I agree with the report button... Cause a mod can review it to see if it needs to be removed.. If they did it the way your talkin about.. Things could get messy since some new guys or someone wanted to be not a nice person could just down rate your thread for no reason at all... Which does happen from time to time.. I have no idea why when a bunch of others love it.

New users should not be able to mod posts yet.
There should be a rating system for the users themselves, as stated in the first post.
If user A rates posts -1 while 5 others rate +1, then eventually user A won't be able to mod posts anymore.
Well, I guess I'll have to use the report button more often and more aggressively.
It was just an idea.

Whahaha, I can see the connection.
Nice work on the toolbar!
kind of similar request: how about keeping it simpler, and have the ability to filter a thread so it shows only "thanked" posts? I think this would be extremely useful, and although I know very little of programming, it shouldn't be difficult? This way for example if I'm in a custom Android ROM thread, instead of searching or reading through posts, you just filter out the questions and other "less useful" posts and get straight to the answers or the more useful/interesting ones.
Sorry if this had been requested before (or if there already is the ability to do it..... ) but just saw this thread and thought I'd jump in

The post rating system only exists in the Galaxy Nexus forum at the moment and has been there a while now.
I'm not too sure about it though because I figured there would be buttons to click to rate the post up or down.
I couldn't understand how simply showing that message (one in screenshot) would solve anything.

I don't mean to sound angry, but you should really think before talking.
Search before posting. It's right there in the forum rules. You may call him "kind of a douche" if you like, but from our perspective this is spam.
At most, this is worthy of yet another reference to it in the Registry Tweaks thread. I could understand creating a new thread if you'd released a new app to automate it (because there totally aren't enough theming apps yet...) but even if this were a brand new tweak, it should have gone in the existing registry tweaking thread.
That said, I do appreciate your desire to help explain the exact steps. Just, please consider the most apropriate avenue for doing so.

I don't think you guys understand. I was just trying to make a clear step by step guide to doing what i thought was a pretty cool tweak.
As you can see, I just recently migrated from android, and I'm loving windows phone so far. I guess the WP dev community is a bit different, and that's just something i'll have to learn to get used to.
That said, what do you think i should do next? Delete the thread? post it in a different forum?
Thanks for helping a WP noob out!
PS: the "for like a month" part was a bit exagerated. I only got my WP device 2 weeks ago
My inclination would just be to lock it and let it fall of the first page (I'm aware that posting this bumps it, but meh). I don't frequent the Adroid forums, but if they're cool with (or full of) people "discovering" a tweak (you can't even call it a hack; the registry editor itself is the hack, this is just one way to use it) and making a post in the OS-wide dev&hacking sub-forum... Oh, and then there's the fact that the registry tweak thread (which has been running for well over a year) shows up right away if you type the first three words of your subject line into the Search.
I've made this mistake before - come new to a community, figured something out, thought it was super-cool, and posted about it without checking if anybody was likely to benefit from my post. I've done that once, to be more specific. It's embarrassing, but no real harm done. This is probably the reason that actual newbies to the forum (as opposed to people in your position, with lots of posts in another section) aren't initially allowed to start threads in this section. It gives people time to learn how the forum works.
Take your lumps, let the thread die, and start seeing if you can build on what we already know. There are still lots of cool hacks and tweaks to be discovered within this OS. We do welcome newbies with cool new hacks, for sure. Just, please make sure it's actually new (for example, with anything relating to the registry, do a search on the relevant registry key). Also bear in mind that new threads in this section usually include apps or other simple ways to apply the hack (for example, not everybody can run WP7 Root Tools).
I honestly don't see the harm, and think you're all being a little douchy. This isn't just a place where the "regulars" come to pat each other on the back, there are plenty of us who had no idea such a thing was possible and would be (are) grateful for the post. I don't go digging through the registry on my own, because I know I'd break something. So this simple post showing me what to do and what it looks like is much appreciated.
What are you all worried about? That this one thread will bump your uber-super-awesome-cool thread off the first page? Give the guy a break. I've been checking out every interesting thread in this forum for 6 months and hadn't noticed someone posting this tweak in this way.
Nope theres assholes in this community too ! Im about to switch to Android altogether because of snobism of Microsoft (I cant blame Microsoft really) ,but like in the Android section xda has run out some of the best devs there was ,hell most of them arent even considered devs ,not sure why either, BTW that was a very clear and concise guide

Question XDA is incredibly frustrating. Why does search not work?!

I go into a thread, and click to search the thread and it takes me to a search outside of the thread for the entire fkng forums.
I noticed this the other day and thought it was me being stupid. Super annoying

On 3/11/2021 at around 10am New York time, XDA will be upgrading our forum software to XenForo 2.2 which brings a bunch of new improvements, like a new thread preview tool, a Device Inventory tool to show off which phones you use, a most-thanked...

Ah ok, so now you have to memorize or copy the thread name so you can go out of it to search a bunch of fields to find a keyword in that thread. Very inconvenient.
It's definitely a pain for now! I prefer my Chrome browser Google Search until there's a better way on XDA...
You're doing it wrong...

Change to "This forum" or "This thread" depending on what you're looking for.
Really a question that should be posted here too...

Anything to do more with the site than with the phones. Feature requests, announcements, praise, moaning, etc. :)

We're talking about the "search this thread" button, which straight up doesn't work
OP, I agree. The new format is annoying. However, it does work, once you figure it out. It took me awhile:
1. Click on "Search This thread" (top right, if you are on desktop)
2. Click the "X" to close the search suggestions.
3. Now you can actually search the thread.
wow, thanks between the two hints and my experimenting, i now understand both of workarounds for the crappy implementation of search this thread function.
summarizing in either method of tapping "search this thread" button or the top of page search box switched from "everywhere" to "this thread"...
must use the "search" button instead of magnifying glass to run the search (don't hit enter on kb either).
this means for "search this thread" button, must tap the X to close the stupid sitewide search result suggestions, to be able to see that "search" button. (also for top of page search if zoom extends it too far down)
hope that helps.

^this^ Gookill Search> "*your search parameters*, XDA"
Works like a charm... not a big deal.

Yep, my go to! Cheers
the google search method seems like an unnecessary hassle since the built in "search this thread" functions as expected (as long as you make sure to X out of the suggested results and tap the search button (don't hit enter or use the magnifying glass button).

Many forums are the same way.
No big deal... make use of those nasty webcrawlers
XDA really screwed up the implementation of search in Xenforo.
It can be so much better/easier with a few tweaks.
Xenforo 2.0 had a better search out-of-the-box but 2.2 can be made better with just a few clicks.
I really dislike the Xenforo they built here.
I'll actually search Google for help before I come here and search XDA.
And I would pay a dollar if XDA would add a roll-eyes "like" option.
LOL it could be useful!
