I don't think I'll switch yet obviously because I'll wait for a stable version, but, in the end, will it be worth switching? What are the main advantages of WM6?
Native SIP, that's my main concern and the only real main difference i see ^^
and office and html-mail

seems stable enough to me, im well happy with LVSW ROM
wm6 is faster, trust me it worth it
I'm using the LVSW ROM here and everything is working good here too. It's not a big change like WM2003SE -> WM5.. but there are some nice changes in WM6. I find it as stable as WM5 for a normal user like myself. By not upgrading you are cutting yourself out from the "Trinity Mobile 6" forum in xda-developers... which should be reason enough to upgrade alone...
I'll offer some ridiculous opinion.
It is worth upgrading to WM6 once you have already upgraded to WM6.
But truthfully, there isnt that much extra in WM6. So it's not especially worth upgrading until you have upgraded... at which point you have nothing to lose.
I suppose it won't do any harm, if it is faster, I would be interested...but in what way? Is that just in running apps and stuff? Also, what's the user memory available?
Well, I found it worth switching to mUn's version, its faster, I have office 2007, better wifi, not any major change, but yeah, its worth it!
Most of those switching at present are doing it 'because they can'
We want to have the most up to date devices, and we love fiddling and sometimes faffing, sometimes f***ing!
If your PPC use is mission critical, don't even consider it until RTM versions are available. Both current WM6 versions are works in progress, fantastic though they both are.
Each has strengths/weaknesses and these forums are invaluable in shaking those down; hopefully before too long we will have fully functional versions we can recommend to everyone.
Once mun_rus fixes the ActiveSync problems, we will be much closer to a fully configured WM6 build which is fast and reliable, and there is no doubt at all the LVSW won't be far behind.
Hopefully their sterling efforts will shame HTC into providing a 'factory' ROM for those who don't like the risks involved in unofficial ROMs, but I suspect that these 2 will remain ahead of the game in providing faster, more memory efficient, customised versions.

Excellent round up of most users' opinion here I guess I'm using LVSW's version now, no huge changes and stuff, but the extra speed and cool new looks are enough for me , and of course if it's there, why not try it
you guys present compelling reasons to check out the WM6 ROMS, however, i have a couple of concerns/questions: does GPS & TomTom 6 work and internet connection sharing work with the upgraded ROM? what about the Office 2007 apps included with WM6 are they working? i just began reading the threads so forgive me if these questions have been answered already. thx for the replies...

Everything you mention works. Not sure about the internet sharing tho, can someone tell if that works?
Internet sharing works perfectly well
Will the same software still work? Along with backups?
I follow you , My problem is that i got too much soft on my wm5, and it'll take me too much time to reinstall all this. So can we backup from wm5 and restore to wm6 ? ( is there some changes in the registry architecture ? )
thanks for your answer.

I ain't no ROM-chef, but to my knowledge the registry is very much the same on both OS'. However: i must stress that it is very unwise to restore backups that were made on a different ROM image (that's even the case for same OS ROM's, like WM5 aku 2 >to> WM5 aku 3 for instance).
For best performance without any quirks, you should best always rebuild the device (and hey; WM6 probably makes you require less third-party apps )
The only problem i see for now is that video call and VOIP don't work well on those WM6 roms, everything else is fine and nice but it kinda takes away the benefits of upgrading to WM6. I'm going back to WM5 after a week of testing but I admire the work of those fantastic devs !

But with all those same apps work on WM6?
Has anyone tried Spb GPRS monitor on it?
I need this program cuz i run my laptop's internet through it.
My boss has the 8525 from Cingular. We recently upgraded it to the latest WM5 rom and the thing works fine, except he can't get his gmail accounts to work anymore. I have a Treo 700wx myself and have messed with it a few times on stuff like this. But what I was wondering what is the most stable WM6 rom out there that we can upgrade to so it resolves that problem, BT problems he has as well?
And is there a way to go back to the original ROM? I can't seem to find a download of it anywhere. Thanks!

also, before somebody starts to flame you with your "whats the best ROM question" (it has been covered here a million times) it really depends on what you want. again you need to patiently search through the forums for your answers. it definitely is there.. good luck..

I have been searching for the past 2 hrs trying to figure out what ROM. There are so many I can not figure out which one to get. From people who have tried them I want to know for a CFO of the company which one is the most stable and works with AT&T. And how can I go back to the original ROM. Anyone have that ROM upgrade/downgrade available?
dude, you gotta read each ROM's thread... and see what people are saying about it... if it is a hermes rom then it will work for AT&T .. and you can ALWAYS go back to the original ROM by going to www.htcamerica.net and downloading it and installing it.

How was your boss accessing his gmail accounts prior to the WM5 upgrade?
i.e.
-Pocket Outlook
-the web (www.gmail.com)
-gmail java client
-Exchange Server (Google Apps)
Seriously, I have been testing most WM6 roms posted on this site for the same reasons. Our whole company uses 8525s.
I would NOT recommend ANY of them for corporate use. Let alone for my boss!
Wait for the 'official' Dopod 838Pro ROM out tomorrow.

Yeah, I'm sure it'll be ready for prime time alright, especially for use with AT&T.
Seriously though, what are you people smoking when it comes to the fervor over this impending "official release"? I believe I'm having iPhone deja vu...
My 2 cents
Well the original poster was asking about what the best ROM was. I've tried a few of the WM6 ROMs and at least my 2 cents, the best has been vp3G's 2.01h. I had issues with the keys not lining up with othe versions - though was able to fix them with a patch. Also, vp3G's version has the data connections configured for AT&T - though you could possibly do that manually with other ROMs. I did have to install the other Cingular apps like MobiTV and XM radio that wasn't included in his ROM.
Before I upgraded to vp3G's ROM (I didn't keep the other WM6 ROMs for very long so I can't speak to their stability), but on the 2.15 "official HTC" upgrade for the 8525, I was resetting my phone daily - some days multiple times - but I seldom have to reset my phone now. Bluetooth also has improved. I have a logitech bluetooth stereo adapter which was hit or miss before when I tried to sync the two. Now it syncs without any issues. There's also the added benefit of a registry editor, as well as addition tweak settings included in the ROM.
Great work vp3G! - got my 3 other friends with 8525's to take the plunge and upgrade as well.

I just pruned the living hell out of this thread to keep it technical. Any more OT crap and I start handing out bans.....
Those of you whose posts were deleted: You've been warned...

Anyhoo....
I've been running my company's 8525 equipped execs on WM6 for over a month w/o complaints. In fact, they love it. We've also been able to mass upgrade to Office 2K7 because of this since the ROM I'm loading has Mobile Office 2K7 installed and can read native attachments.
We use direct push to Exchange 2k3 currently.
I'm also keeping the security folks at bay with WM6's SD encryption capabilities.
No worries Sleuth, apologies. It got crazily out of hand, I thought my posts were pretty low key. Sorry.
Anyway, I hope you don't mind me reposting some of the relevant info minus the BS. I think it has merit.
As stated, I still think WM6 is not ready for an environment where high reliability is required.
The latest WM5 AT&T ROM works flawlessly with MS Push for all 35 of our 8525 users. It does not stop syncing.
I have tried most current WM6 ROMS and MS Push will occasionally stop syncing at some point we find.
We are a large corporation and tested the 8525s thoroughly for MS Push before dumping Goodlink and moving to MS. We still have 250 Blackberries in the UK which will also be migrating to MS push/Hermes. (MS did it like they always do, take someone else's idea, offer it free and wipe out the competition!)
I'm not implying the official AT&T ROM is perfect, far from, the one big bug is that PIE will stop showing pages and device then needs a reboot.
But the killer app for us is MS Push and that works as we need it to.
Thus, I am hoping that the official HTC/Dopod WM6 ROM does indeed work better than the current 'cooked' WM6 roms. Fingers crossed!

Really?! That's good news! Which ROM and what Radio ver?
I find that using EDGE/GPRS and not 3G improves battery life considerably and minimizes the stops in syncing.
Does your WM6 ROM not stop syncing using push at all then?!
I'd really appreciate any info you can give me.
Cheers.
I agree, SD encryption along with remote wipe is a plus.
There is an issue with the RTM CommManager that appears to affect direct push. The WM6 release our execs run pre-dates this. Direct push is completely stable.
That being said, I'd hold on WM6 updates in your case until you get a chance to test the ROM I'm currently working on. I know how to fix the sync bug but have several options. See the latest posts in my current ROM thread (click on my sig) for more information on this.

Well, am testing the new Dopod ROM. It seems they left the old CommManager in that too, obviously for the reason you just mentioned. I have good hopes for this new ROM.
Thanks again.
Update - so far so good! This Dopod ROM looks promising. have been using all day. No stops in Syncing. Lets see how it pans out when I take the subway home. Always the decider as to whether it will start syncing when I come out.

Thanks Jamerican....
did you check the new PIE how is it, does it have flash???
How about threaded sms like the PPC version has??
i'm actually really curious about wm6.1 too. I know it's out already, so where are the ROMs at? BTW, does anyone have access to HTC's downloads for the S620-621? When I attempted to register my unit with the serial # at their site, it wouldn't let me since it knew it was T-Mo Dash instead.
EDIT: well a quick search on google yielded this interesting result:
http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?newsID=13800
I guess that's why we're not seeing any wm6.1 devices anytime soon...
even so, here at xda-developers you can see upgrades to 6.1 for some devices, so i guess we´ll just have to wait a little bit, but its going yo be here i´m sure
Google is your friend. Many websites have covered the new WM6.1 features. Basically it comes out to these:
* Threaded SMS - A Chat like function for your SMS Inbox
* Zoom out in Pocket IE - Enables Page overview mode and better navigation
* One Note included in Office Mobile
* Running Programs tab in Settings > Memory replaced to a better Task Manager. (But the previous running programs tab was much simple and easier)
* A new Managed Programs menu
As you can see, no mention of flash incorporation in PIE. Personally, I won't upgrade until it is as fast as the HTC ROM I'm using now. I am, however, really excited about threaded SMS.
wm6.1 does exist for the dash.
Lets put it this way. People have HTC excalibur running wm6.1. 6.1 adds a new home screen, better IE (much better IE), copy & paste, new version of active sync, etc, etc. WM6.1 is also faster. I'm not sure when this will be avaliable to everyone... but it does exist.
Actually I tried it at a M$ event at my school. The lady said it would take at least 10 months for consumers to see it. That does not include carrier customization etc. Pissed me off.

WM 6.1 is alive and well on the PPC platform. First batch of WM 6.1 Professional ROMs hit the scene about a week and a half ago and I may be wrong about this but I believe the wing (HTC Herald) was the first to get it from our fine chefs here on XDA-DEV. Still waiting on a 6.1 Standard version for our favorite non-touchscreen devices (HTC Excalibur etc)...
Also don't forget that fortunately/unfortunately the touchscreen devices are way more popular than the non-touchscreen devices.
Personally I believe my T-Mobile Dash running the HTC ship rom is way more stable than any other Windows Mobile device I have ever owned, and I've had quite a few as can be seen in my sig.
Thats interesting, I had no idea!
I don't want to waste time flashing my Dash with a cooked 6.0 ROM (HTC ROM) if 6.1 is only a few weeks away. Any estimate from the ROM cookers on a 6.1 release for the Dash?

dont run away so quickly, there are some decent roms in this forum, just have a look around, SCHAPS has some good one,s go for an earlier clean WM6 though one that's been hammered, and has some updates, for some reason he doesn't seem to want to provide updates to his latest Beta for 6.1.
There are a few other good full roms but its all about what you want to use the device for, I also just need a clean one not one that a chef has put all their fave apps in which bloats the build, I'm currently trying out the Shadow one which seams ok at the moment, main reason for that choice was that it states he has tweaked the bluetooth, what he's done I don't know..
and saying you've been searching since Friday... some of us have been searching for the wholy grail of ROMS for a while, I too am not a coder and don't want to brick my rom, no matter how good the destructions are, they invariably will be for the non uber geeks amongst us
Yes don't go to WM5. WM6 is much stable, dependable and you can find some good ROMs here. Though not officially launched, people here are cooking for WM6.1. It feels a bit strange to see you are going back to WM5.
Firstly decide the use of your Herms device.
Check out the applications the chefs are offering in their ROMs or you can use a clean ROM and instal cabs afterwards if you donot want to cook or expert in doing for yourself. It all depends on your personal preferences, but I feel you should not give preference to WM5 over WM6.

You may not quite get that combination but one of the numerous lite ROMs on the board may well suit.
Myself I'd recommend using Mattk_r's Pandora 6 (WM6.0, not WM6.1) and using the 3.60 Big Storage ROM. Very nice, stable combination. That way you can add in just a couple of things.
WM 6.0 Kitchen: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=316881
Or you could just use his 'Naked' ROM for 6.0 and add just a tweak prog from a cab.
WM 6.0 Naked ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=351274
I went up to the Pandora Naked 7 Kitchen and 'naked' ROM (still WM6.0) for a while then into the 6.1 'naked' ROM and kitchen with Pandora 8 & 9. Now I'm back with the 6.0 Kitchen and the 3.60 Big Storage ROM.

I ran Schaps 4.01 Full for a while without too many problems, I have just installed this one, as a base ROM, there are a few minor issues with the launcher app but I don't use it anyway http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=372118 seems reasonably fast can't comment on stability as I've only had it installed for an hour or so.
If you don't want all the tweaks and apps the ROM is offering just do a soft reset after you align the screen. Be sure to get a connection wizard then just pick and choose the apps you want. If you want a .CAB for something PM the person that has the ROM and ask for it.
I have been running the shaps 4.31 and although i like it its very very slow.
it keeps freezing and it takes ages to do anything.
I know no one believes me when i say i had less problems with WM5 but its that bad im seriously considering it.
I still have no way of putting the pays rom on as the loader always crashes.
Anyone else got a 6.1 rom that they recomend i can try.
try vp3g's it's very stable and not too many extras
I sure hope this is the correct forum for this post. If it is not please excuse me for improper placing.
Way back when in 2007 I purchased an HTC Tytn and immediately found this website and was able to unlock the Tytn and was able to successfully upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional - I believe I also upgraded my antena as well. I also found some cool weather app or something.
Since then I have not messed with the phone at all - in actuality it has been inactive for large periods of time. Well fast forward to 2009 and I am looking to upgrade this to 6.1 or 6.5.
There seems to be a plethora of options and posts out there - could anyone point me to a good stable working upgrade? As well as advice on any new cool APPS / Programs that they would recommend - that may have been developed in the past 1.5 yrs?
I thank you for your time in advanced.
Upgrading to 6.1 or 6.5
Good morning,
Well, you're probably going to be flashing a lot, since there are many new builds available since you've been gone. You'll find there is not going to be one that is an overwhelming recommendation, as much is personal preference.
That said, before you do anymore flashing, make sure you have the hardspl done and also that you have downloaded a stripped ROM, both of which you can find many places here.
There doesn't seem to be much difference between standard 6.0 and 6.1. I would suggest trying a few of the 6.5 builds, they are much more exciting and add new life to our phones. TAI_Sw has been churning out more ROMS than McDonalds has hamburgers lately - I would try one of those first.
You'll notice the today screen is much different, the interface is called Titanium - I personally don't like it, so the first thing I do is go into Settings, Today, and take that out and check the items I like. Besides the Titanium, some of the ROMS have Manilla, which is another cool option, and FCW has a newer ROM with a PointUI cooked in, another neat interface.
Bottom line, I believe you'll be happier with 6.5, which build is purely a personal choice. In any event, have fun flashing over and over until you find something you're happy with.
Best Regards.
Well I thank you for your reply. I have acquired the HARDSPL download from the sticky. As for the stripped rom - I seem to be lost at this point I have done a few searches but have not come up with much. Is this stripped rom specific to your carrier/provider? I am with a Canadian Carrier Rogers Wireless - I did see Tai_Sw reference a stripped rom for At&T. Hmmm?
Thoughts? Thanks for the heads up on WM 6.5 - I will definately narrow my focus to the 6.5 variety (just got to sift through the thousands of posts - to find a download for 6.5)
6.5 Links
I would stick to the first two pages of posts, that is if you're sorting your posts by the most recent activity. Read the comments toward the end of each post to see if there have been any problems with a specific ROM. I don't think it would be a problem using the AT&T stripped ROM, as you're immediately going to flash another, so carrier settings are not important.
I've played with 6.5 a little bit. Had it on my 8525 for a few days. It always feels slow in comparison to 6.1 for me. It takes a lot of memory to run. Keep in mind that it is still in beta at Microsoft, so anything you flash is going to have bugs, regardless of the tremendous talents of the chefs here.
The IE in WM6.5 is REALLY slow. There have been a few complaints about that and I concure. If you want fast and stable, I'd stick with 6.1 for a little while longer. I'm sure 6.5 will be much better when Microsoft finalizes it (or at least hits release candidate status). For now though, it is just too BUGGY.
Also, 6.5 probably has a time limit on it right now. I'm guessing it won't go away till someone finds it and removes the time limit, or when 6.5 comes out of beta.

on the other hand theres some good things coming out of 6.5 now and the official release is due soon so as for the timebomb built in there shouldnt be a problem. dispite its bugs i think 6.5 is a worthy upgrade and will become better as time goes on and new builds come out for us to play with.
Can you upgrade and then downgrade?
Ive just started flashing for the first time (ive already successfully flashed two 6.1 roms) and i have a question about upgrading from 6.1 to 6.5. Once you upgrade to 6.5 can you easily go back to 6.1 just by flashing a 6.1 rom? I know it seems like a simple question but ive looked around and havent seen any answers to it yet. Also, is flashing the 6.5 rom just the same as flashing a 6.1 rom or is there something else i would need to do?

It's all the same. You can flash any rom you want (as long as you have hardspl!).

thanks! just flashed a 6.5 rom on my touch pro and it rocks!
the time-limit on WM6.5 is true. i am currently using WM6.5 on a Treo750 and last week I noticed (with a lot of others) that this version of WM6.5 will stop functioning on 01-july 2009!
Hopefully we can find a 'way-around' this...
I am open for suggestions

I really wouldn't flash a hermes rom to it! Might need to do a bit more research first!
