I have done the obvious steps of googling and searching the forums so please excuse me if I have missed the answer to this question but here goes....
I bought a T-Mobile branded HTC S620 on ebay, the advert says it has WiFi but the device never showed this ability at all. I followed instructions here to update to the Kavana 6.1 Rom but still no Wi Fi. I was wondering if anyone can tell me should this actually have Wi Fi capability?
The technical details are:
CPU: TI OMAP850
Speed: 201 MHz
RAM: 64 MB
FLASH: 128 MB
Model Name: HTC-S620
Radio Version: 4.1.13.51_03.07.90
Can`t find a way to display further information, if I run the freeware program WifiIO it says "sorry no WLAN hardware found" and I`m thinking it doesn`t have the hardware built in
There is a code underneath the battery that reads EXCA210 if this helps?
Thanks
Dave
Of course it does. Did you check on CommManager? If you flashed the phone to 6.1 then I assume you also followed the steps to allow SMS, MMS and Internet to work? If you haven't, look into that. If you have... then it sounds weird. I am sure I read something similar to your problem around recently.
I just got a Dash from T-Mobile and I do have wifi, so yes you should definately have it also.
That`s what I thought, using a registry editor I can see that under HKLM\SOFTWARE\HTC\CommManager\WLAN it has two values
one says DEFAULT and in brackets (value not set) and the other is the device name. I have been reading in one post that maybe the T Mobile models don`t have wlan hard ware. I looked at the exact wording on the ebay advert and it says "put wi fi and Bluetooth 2.0 as a extra item" whatever that means
It does not show in the comm manager though
I have just found that in the folder WINDOWS is a file called RemoveWiFi so I would assume there must be a way to make it enabled again?
Busted wifi yet another ebay Dump, Busted wifi S620.
I think there may be a way to re enable it and hopefully someone who knows more than me about the subject can help.
I`m guessing the key is to do with the removewifi file. I opened it in notepad and it contains a load of text including bits saying to enable just 6 items (whereas with wifi enabled there should be seven I think on the manager screen).
Of course it could just be that thats the default setting for the Kavana 6.1 rom however it appears from hours of googling that the 210 (my model) is the Dash from T Mobile and not the hard ware disabled T Mobile mail so I`m hoping
So maybe if someone can tell me how to edit the removewifi file (is it safe to do so?) I may be able to enable the feature

if you loaded kavana's rom the wifi manager should be at the bottem where it says settings under photo and you just scroll left or right and it should say wireless manager : wifi off click the silver button and it will open your comm manager then you can turn it on...if it isn't on there maybe you messed up when you loaded the rom, re-download the rom then re-boot the rom back onto your phone..
Thanks, I know the comms manager but it shows only bluetooth and the phone options, followed the instructions for rom properly and image appears to be fine as everything else works.
Its supposed to be the T-Mobile Dash according to the sellers advert, he refuses to answer my queries, but if it ish that should have had wi fi and when I got it there was no wi fi on the t mobile rom eithr so maybe I just got ripped off by a smeghead on ebay
Still nice phone though
I don't want to look like a cretin, but I have seen on ebay knock off exact copies of phones such as the Nokia N96 and they all lacked wifi. Maybe you got a knock off HTC Dash hence why no wifi? Just a thought.
I'm not aware of any T-Mob Dash that was sold without WiFi.
Here's an idea: Reflash the phone with T-Mob's latest ROM and see if the WiFi gets installed and can be enabled. If it is/can, then you know something fubar'd when you flashed the non-OEM ROM.

I am pretty sure I read somewhere that the MDA Mail variant of the Excalibur sold by T-Mobile in Germany & UK did not have onboard Wi-Fi
Not sure if cross-flashing ROM can enable it - or if the hardware is not in there.
yyour wifiinit.lnk mustve gotten deleted, thats exactly what happens if i remove mine from windows/startup folder. im guessing that if u either reflash it, hard reset or idk if someone uploaded it for you tt download that the issue will be fix
The original T Mobile rom didn`t allow wifi either, it had Windows Mobile 5 on then. I will have to see how to create a wifiinit.lnk file and where to place it.
Hi!
I own both a unbranded HTC S620 and the German MDA mail. Im a alert by the fact that u stated that the model name under the battery as EXCA210. Because that is exactly what I have in my German wifi-disabled MDA mail. The wifi-enabled HTC S620 on the other hand reads EXCA200.
However, it is very easy in fact to determine if your Excalibur (whatever the model) is one of those "handicapped" MDA mails.
How does the case look? Is it all black? Not like the new US Dash but a metallic, black paint on the front cover? Plus, a MDA mail only has the "Designed for Windows Mobile" logo on the back and nothing else!
Usually, all the ROMs automatically detect whether WiFi is available or not. If the WiFi option is shaded grey and not applicable in the CommManager then I'm very sorry but to tell u that either the WiFi Module is broken or you've got one of the MDA mails. I can approve of that since I am easily able to check this for both of my phones.
Googling for EXCA210 and finding that it is a T-Mobile Dash doesnt change the fact...that is usually some confusion about that. Even on the Excalibur-Wiki and the smartphone-db, they list the MDA mail as wifi-enabled which it is, obviously not.
EDIT: Oh, and btw. There is no way of enabling the WiFi on a MDA Mail. It simply lacks the WiFi-onboard module!
I have to admit the seller who won`t reply to me at all says its a T Mobile Dash with optional Wi Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 in his advert on ebay, however it seems to me to be an MDA instead.
Its a UK one, jet black as you describe complete with ten silver numeric keys and I`m thinking the seller just is a rip off merchant!
Alright mate, then u got a MDA mail..sorry to hear that. It's not a bad phone though..its a q nice contrast to all the other silver ones...but yet, very disappointing withouth WiFi. To be honest, I reckon the seller didnt even know what he was selling, and just copied the data from the normal HTC S620. Very little people know about this crucial difference between the two..however, he should have been one of those..
Have you got a link to the bespoken product on ebay?
HTC MDA Mail
Is this your phone? http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/03/12/t-mobile_ships_mda_mail/ I got to say that I really like the looks of it, even though it doesn't have wifi, is a nice phone. Is there anything else different from the dash? regarding apps and features.
Yes thats the one roloracer.
Yes the looks are really cool i admit, but its bears the typical HTC problem as other re-branded/re-modelled phones for T-Mobile : the colour wears off very rapidly. I had that problem with my Amadeus (SDA music for T-Mo GER) that the white paint came off really easily. For the MDA Mail u basically end up with the normal HTC S620 cover underneath with still little bits of the original colour scattered on the front cover...makes it look very roughed up..not nice
Apart from that, everything is the same. I cant really remember about the Apps because I unlocked and upgraded the ROM very quickly.. But another advantage is that those MDA mails were manufactured in the HTC plant in Taiwan...so its said that those usually show a better component quality.

So unless you absolutely need the wifi , then you're not missing anything by having an mda mail instead of a dash/excalibur.

I like my MDAIII after deciding to ditch the smartphone and PPC for an all in one no real bugs except if the unit is in standby for a while the back light stays off and I have to go through settings to turn it back on not easy in the dark....
Does anyone else have this problem - I am awaiting a reply from T-mobile
Well T-Mobile have washed their hands of it -
I am now waiting for Microsoft
Men, I had your problem too., you must select one off the boxes in the backlight settings, I had that problem too, and it was due to my problem coz I accidentaly disabled an option.
I cant tell you right now what it was coz my rom is in chinese....hehe...and I can't read it
I have already gone through ticking & de-ticking bits.... Also it does it from a hard reset which has no settings changed from its original start up which means others should have the same problem?????????
I did not like T mobiles response they did not even suggest anything they just said call Microsoft on a premium rate number... I have to spend extra money trying to fix a faulty item they sold me...
sorry a bit off topic
The backlight on or off goes with a app, I assume, something like the TPeneble, and TP disable in the ExtROM I assume, so maybe you can try to find all the files in the windows folder related with backlight (only by name or if you know what files) and copy them from a good working MDAIII, and reeboot.
It is just a thought.
You can't complain with me about their service, cos in my country I have nobody to ask that kind of things, coz they sell the devices but they don't have any service (my operator was bought by tmobile recently)
I will try the copy from another MDAIII soon ... Cheers
same backlight problem with mine mda3 t-mobile
I have been sent a link from O2 Data Support for downloading the new XDA2s ROM upgrade, which apparently will fix the Bluetooth problems.
The link is...

Haven't done anything with it yet, but thought you guys might like to know...

Hmm I wonder if I can use this update on my O2 Xda2s.
I got it in Malasyia.
Noel
I installed it on my UK XDA 2s, I will report back later.
In the PDF it's saying that this version is only for devices sold by O² UK or O² Ireland... Not sure if I should give it a go on my version..
Noel
I think I might wait and see what others say about this before I install it myself. So many that have it already say it is great but then you hear others say it has caused problems.
That post is the launch rom, not an upgrade. LMAO It is intended for people who attempt to flash the XDA IIs with a different vendors rom and screw it up.
Mike
Nope, its not, click the link. O2 are obviously just too lazy to create a new page for a new rom!
Nigel
HAHA you are correct!!! LMAO oh well.
Hi..have installed the update..and have encountered several problems...was wondering if anyone could help me.
I hate the fact that the clock has disappeared from the top right so whe u are using applications its no longer visible. Is there any way of bring it back?
Also now when you click the o2 at the top it dosn't give the active connections anymore. Therefore whats the quickest way to disconnect the gprs? and is there any way of bringing that back to how it used to be?
I have also had to reset my phone more often that I had to before.
Was wondering if anyone had encountered the same problems and how to resolve them.
Thanks so much...
Bit the bullet and upgraded last night, wifi still works and as I use Corporate mode I don't get any issues with 02 active, icons or clocks. All seems normal, so far!
Have to agree with Dave. I finally bit the bullet and installed the update last night. Don't like the new O2 active and put the clock straight back with the registry key.
Other than the missing clock and poor O2 Active software which I never use anyway no real problems. Tom Tom still works fine with my Bluetooth GPS receiver. WIFI still works fine with WPA security and everything locked down on the access point.
Still receive SMS notification and its nice that you're not limited to 70 char when using ' in sms text messages now!
All ok.
har5ha:
Just get the old O2 active back. To to this, head to the xda-dev FTP site, find the old O2 XDA IIs extended rom, pull it, find the file install.ARM.CAB (O2 active)
Sync/backup yr stuff then hard reset the XDA IIs, and let it do its stuff. When leave it to install the extended rom, but be ready to soft reset it when you get asked the 'corporate/personal' question (you'll have to watch the screen since there is a timeout). Once it reboots, copy install.ARM.CAB to the machine, and execute it. It will soft reset yr device at the end.
I use 2 things from O2 active, the battery plugin and the O2 icon to kill connections. Shame billy did not think to include a disconnect dialogue as well really (he put on in for vpn).
There might be a way to install old over new, dunno. I tried and it locks loads of files (even if you prevent it from loading).
Nigel
thanks Nigel...I ended up installing gb soft for the disconnect button.
So its ok...still getting loads of crashing. I think am going to reinstall it and then use corporate mode..hopefully it will crash less!
can I get an update on xda iis rom update
Hi all, I'm still new to this whole thing but reading and researching all I can. Don't have an xda iis as of yet, but on the high streets waiting list. I like the phone and in one way, can't wait, but don't want problems when I get it, especially at the price. Can anyone on o2 that has purchased their phone from o2 let me know how you are getting on...problems...ect, before and after the update.? To be honest, I'm a bit afraid to bite the bullet and get one right now due to what I'm hearing...especially since I'm not very computer smart. I do understand that it depends a lot on the manufacturer of the phone but if I had problems like I'm hearing about it would really do my head in...(no patience). Thanks
Well I love my phone to bits...had issues with the update but now that I have hard reset it and put it corporate mode its not freezing anymore.
But you have to remember its a pocket pc...like a pc..will need to be reset every so often...I was resetting mine of average once a day. It just takes a minute.
There are some negative points..but the positive outweighs the negative I think. My old pda was palm os (clie) and this is windows which is really good! As well as the fact that it has a phone built in too!
Hi all.
Can you please post some more feedback on this rom.
How is the BT stability?
Range?
Crackling noise?
License Expired troubbles?
I know its Build 3500, but maybe something else in this rom makes a difference.
How about the problem with sound dissapering when you answer a call.
Any troubbles here? This is really a pain in the (_!_)
Running the New Rom for a couple of days now and it seems much better than the launch Rom, The O2 active stuff is just as pants as usual so remove that and the "Connections" exe from Windows\startup.
Best thing is that it's stopped the annoying bug of the GPRS settings being screwed up when you enable/disable Wi-Fi.
Recommend it myself

I'm currently running Black 2.5 (the T-MOB variant) and everything is fine.
But I'm tempted to upgrade to Black 3.x before I re-install all of my apps on my Vario (the speed improvement sounds good).
Has anyone with a Vario/T-Mobile installed Black 3.x? I see that there isn't (and will never be) a T-Mobile variant. What will I lose with a generic install? How hard is it to customise it for T-Mobile (UK)?
Thanks in anticipation.

Its fairly easy, all you really need are the internet and mms settings, look for a thread with operator settings in the title and find a cab file called t-mobile uk fixed.
Just drop it on to a storage card and run it whenever you do a hard reset or flash a new rom version.
Cant see why you would need the other t-mob customaizations as they mostly suck eggs.
Edit:cab file attached below
Here's the cab
Just drag to your Vario and run it.

Let me get this right. Upgrade to Black 3.x. Copy CAB to device. Run CAB. Voila? This sets everything I need?
I agree most of the T-Mobile extras are crap but I need the settings for Internet/GPRS/MMS/SMS etc.
Cheers.
yes, working fine here, all connection settings set manually.

Yep. I actually have a directory setup on my sd card called rebuilds with the cabs I need to reset my ppc up after flash/hard reset. Generally takes me about half an hour now to set up everything, including restores of pim records

I'm with Orange and my flashing routine now is:
1) flash new rom
2) run pimping changes
3) manually enter gprs and mms settings
4) sync with 4smartphone exchange server
5) run smsproviders cab off Storage card (to sort voicemail)
6) install spb pocket plus and customise today launchers
7) set up two pop mail accounts
8) sign in and configure windows live messenger
Got it down to about 15 minutes now (but it does help that exchange server syncing is so damn quick.)
I tend to install things like Reader that like a soft reset so it takes me a little longer.

Is it as fast as people say? Did you notice a speed improvement when you installed it?
MDA Vario II works with Black 3.01, what about rSAP?
Hi there,
Just as it has already been mentioned earlier (upgrade to 3.01 on T-Mobile MDA Vario II). I took the plunge today and installed version 3.01 straight from WM5. I was initially a bit apprehensive being my first update since I got the phone and I can confirm that it works well. I simply had to add the 3G and MMS settings back or just use the T-Mobile cab to get everything back to normal.
Speed actually seems faster than before. The question I have got now is what happened to the rSAP (Remote Simm Access Profile) as I need to ensure that I can use my phone in my "troublesome" Mercedes CLS. Never was able to pair it with the car so i'll be testing it tonight. I just noticed that the rSAP seems to be missing.
Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.
Vido.
It works a treat, however when i goto use Live Messenger it cannot connect and doesn't present me with a login form like it did with Black 2.0... Is anyone else having trouble with this? I'm using a Vario II, i've tried connecting over 3G, Wireless and through ActiveSync, all with no joy,
The service may be down, mine works without any hitch. Then again, I haven't and never do install any other third party software.

All working ok for me, web'n'walk back working and exchange server sync'd ok. TomTom OK. Calls OK...
Only problem I have is connecting to a WPA2 WLAN.... maybe me.... maybe the Black 3.0 (2.5 worked ok). Need to spend sometime looking this evening.

TomTom
Justin, I take it you have the app TomTom on your mobile, rather than being a 910 or similar?
I took one of the other WM6 ROMs and the DUN (data transfer) has been removed so I can only use it as a hands free device and not to update traffic over GPRS.

I gave rSAP a try with an earlier black build, and I'm sorry to tell you that it behaved exactly the same as WM5 with the Merc car kit - i.e. just doesn't work (even once you've hacked the stack to make the Hermes look like a phone). If you get anywhere, it would be great to hear, but I'm afraid I think the Merc kit is just toooo limited in what it supports.

Hi Vido.
I hope you read the extensive guides mr Vanx has done on upgrading. If not, consider this a stern warning to do so *now* (link in my sig)
Your post suggests that you did not put on the olipro bootloader which means you are taking a risk flashing any OS rom onto your phone - if something went wrong, you would brick your phone.
For you and anyone else reading this, please read Mr Vanx's guides and save yourself, and everyone else, the headache of trying to recover your phone as this stuff voids your warranty.
Cheers,
Smiffy.
ok guys im on tmobile usa and mms doesnt work at all on any of the new wm6 roms. do you guys suggest that i try the uk settings
Hi, you need to check this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299023
If USA not on here go to your T-Mobile website and do the settings manualy or get them from tech support...
Then post in the above thread!
Martyn
Hi Smiffy/All,
I actually followed all the instructions regarding upgrading to WM6 by flashing all the instructions in Mr Vangs guideline and used the 1.40.olipro bootloader. I just didn't type in all the details because of space. What I meant was that this is my first attempt at upgrading to WM6 after reading all the instructions in this forum.
Like I said my phone still does not work with the Mercedes Bluetooth UHI which is a pain and one of the reasons why I performed the upgrade. The other thing I have just noticed is that my ohne now finds it difficult to connect to my wifi at home using simple WEP key. I was only able to connect to my wifi at work only once after which it doesn't connect anymore. Has anybody else encountered this problem or is it only me.
Last question, is it possible to have the VOIP (Sip) work with T-Mobile? it shows up as "Service Blocked" and I read it somewhere that this can be tweaked. does anyone have the settings for testing this?
Apart from that the Black edition 3.01 is really cool.
Regards,
Vido.
Hello there,
What I Have: Att 8525 Herm100
Rom: Att's Mobile 6
Everything is stock but the extended life battery
The problem I am having is when ever I try to activate my WiFi the phone doesn't do anything. I am not sure if there is a wifi card or not but that's want I want to know. I have tried everything from activating it in com manager to going into the settings and activating it manually and nothing happens it acts like I didn't even hit the button to activate it. Is there a wifi card in the phone or is it integrated on the motherboard in the phone. Note: I bought this phone off e-bay and the wifi never worked when I received the phone.
I am new here and if there is a post about this already I am sorry.
I hate it when that happens.
To begin, there were two ATT OEM WM6 roms relevant to the 8525 that I noticed deep in the bowels of XGA.
I chose the later file (higher revision numbers) I found it here:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Available Original Shipped WM6 ROM Versions
From comm manager when I click the tower button on within a second the spinning windoze icon shows something is happening. It then starts "sniffing" for my preset wifi connection (ATT supplied 2wire portal 802.11g).
Now, if yours does not show the spinning windoze working icon when you turn on wifi? There obviously is a problem. This could be software, or hardware related (duh). If there is no error message related to "wifi is not an option, unavailable, or screwed" then my first guess is there is something missing or damaged in the ROM update that was applied to your device. As far as I know all 8525 (herm100) were shipped with wm5. It had been mentioned in the volumes of xda that the first AT&T WM6 rom was a little buggy. Try the later released AT&T WM6 update.
It was a run file so no muss no fuss. Sync the phone run the update from the pc, three minutes later the phone is flashed to ATT WM6 professional.
You could take it to a ATT shop? But, I think that without a doubt they would hand it back and say you need a new phone with a 20 year contract and 3g data plan even Obama would blush at.
Try the hard reset. take a picture of the startup screens so you have the numbers and see if the wifi startup is working after the reset. If not then compare the numbers to the above mentioned roms. If the indications are you have the first issue of WM6 from ATT try flashing the second release. If that still fails then your device could indeed have a hardware problem.
The wifi is indeed built into the system and if that chip on the board is not working it could be a overly expensive problem. Possibly a shop has a working board they would swap out cheap? Otherwise, it is a fun phone you can keep notes on, run gps software if you have a bluetooth gps receiver and software like tomtom.
To be honest the wifi on my 8525 has been convenient when around the house to check the local weather radar when I hear a thunder outside, or browse headlines from the porcelain room or even leave messenger turned on incase a gamer friend is looking for someone to get shot up in a game.
I have used the live search voice thing to amaze the neighbors once. But, the limited range of wifi is a real drawback to how truly wonderful that addition could be.
HELP Please! Wi-Fi not working!!!
Hi to XDA all users !!!
MY Hermes - HTC TyTN [Herm200]
I bought HTC Hermes myself year ago.
there was flashed a WM5.0, I've just downloaded from here HARD SPL & WM6,1 (Custom) Flashed.
Wi-Fi will works on WM5.0.
Well here I am at 6.1 flashed and now is not working Wi-Fi. When i pressed Power ON - loading long and nothing happens.
Other methods are also tried on Commanager and Settings - but did not help.
What do I need to do my dear.
HELP!
Thank you for your attention!
Hi Nurk.
Since the wifi worked on wm5 but failed after the 6.1 flash. I would guess the problem is in the 6.1 components. You might start with contacting the kitchen rom you employed for WM6.1 thread and see if this has happened to others. Next step would be to check the radio rom version. I did see on xda an assortment of Radio roms.
If your not totally in love with the current rom you have flashed? Try another 6.1 or even a 6.5 and see whats poppin.

HKLM\Software\HTC\CommManager\WLAN\DeviceName - {98C5250D-C29A-4985-AE5F-AFE5367E5006}\TIACXWLN1
There's a new Zest firmware available for download from http://www.my-xda.com/. The filename is Xda_Zest Firmware Update_V7.7.0S.WWE20.00_M4.6.5.P7_V2.1.4 GBR20, which seems to be updates to most of the roms inside the zest. It's installing at the moment, and the upgrade interface on the phone is displaying "GalaxyMini5 Eboot (3.33.0). Since this appears to be a codename for the P565, I guess this is more evidence that the XDA Zest is simply an underclocked P565 and more evidence that P565 firmware may well work on it.
Warning, this firmware does not appear to contain the O2 menu software, or the free GPS software that comes with the phone (although maybe the latter can be re-installed from the SD card). Shame - I rather liked the O2 menu interface.
what improvements does it have? Is it actually worth upgrading?
Thanks.
The only things I can see that I don't remember seeing before are a couple of new or updated control panel entries. Video calling is probably the really important one.
You seem to lose the RSS reader, the O2 auto settings, the O2 menu and the GPS s/w (although the latter was only a demo). I have no idea if using the SD card that came with the Zest will restore these, as I don't have it. (If the software is all on there somewhere, and someone could bung me a copy, I'd be really grateful.)
It does make me wonder how the P565 firmware compares. I understand it has a nice touch interface on it.
It seems odd that the new firmware would remove all the o2 specific bits. Great if you want to use it on another network I suppose, but I quite like the mobile shell or o2 menu.
The satnav software isn't on the sd card - only the maps.
The instructions say:
Please note that if you already have CoPilot satellite navigation software on your Xda, refer to the Xda Zest user manual before upgrading your device software.

I couldn't see anything of significance in the user manual.
Interesting. I actually have Tomtom for GPS on a different SD card, which is related to the reason I don't have the original SD card. Tomtom autoinstalls from the SD card, so I thought it might be that the O2 software installed itself from the SD card provided by O2. I guess that if it's only maps on the SD card then that's not the case, and the new firmware does strip out all the O2 extras, which seems like a peculiar decision to say the least.
Still, it did get me to try the new SPB mobile shell 3, which is what the O2 menu is based on, but nicer. I'm trying to decide whether it's worth the $35 for just a flashy finger driven interface. The weird thing is, it actually might be.
I'm actually going to upgrade my firmware to new one which is currently available in O2 site. What I want to know is if upgrade mine to the latest what would be the changes I may seen... Is it worth upgrading by loosing all the software?
So far I've seen nothing to write home about. The only reason might be if you can't already make video calls and want to do so. (I never make them, so I have no idea whether or not they're supported in the original firmware.)
I just upgraded mine to new firm ware. It worked fine for me. I didn't lose any O2 extras inc O2 menu. It was Oki but haven't tried yet to make video calls.. I will install iGO8 and will uninstall the co-pilot.
SPB Mobile shell 3.0 Rocks working smoothly with my Omnia and Xda Zest
I've just updated, and I didn't lose any O2 extras either (including Copilot). I backed up the Program Files\Copilot folder on the device to my PC before updating, and copied it back over after the update and voila, I've still got my fully activated version of Copilot. It did still prompt for allowing it to connect to the net during the 14-day trial the first time I ran it, but the license screen confirms it's the full version.
aDe
I have a working theory that the autorun on my Tomtom SD card might have run in preference to some autorun that might otherwise have run the first time the OS booted. I could test this by re-installing the firmware, but it's kind of a pain to have to put all the data on again.
Having played around some more and browsed the Extended ROM on my device, this does appear to be what happened, as all the CAB files are present. Fortunately this is a bonus for me, since I'm not on O2, and most of these files are useless to me, and I can therefore just pick and choose the apps I'd like to install.
This might be useful to other Zest users - the hack to make the Extended ROM visible:
Use your favourite Registry Editor to make HKLM\System\StorageManager\Profiles\ONDisk2\FATFS\MountHidden set to 0 (default is 1)
You can then browse to \ASUS_ROM\ in Total Commander to view your Extended ROM partition. The ROM does not appear to be write protected, so you can now put all the packages *you* want re-installed on a hard reset in there. Neat.
I contacted O2 support about this issue, and they replied saying that:
On occasions the O2 menu can drop off after a ROM upgrade, but this would usually be resolve by either hard resetting or running the upgrade again. The o2 menu is still installed on the new ROM.

I have now done this upgrade and have retained the 02 menu. The radio reception seems a bit better as I now get HSDPA at home, which I didn't previously, so the radio upgrade seems to be worth it.
ringer
ive got the zest and am happy with it so far apart from the last 2 days i cannot hear it when i get a call everything else works ie.system sounds, core player etc but the actual phone wont ring it just vibrates ive reset it a million times and checked system settings etc but nothing so if anyone has any ideas i would be very grateful, also how do you know if you are getting hdspa or not is there a setting for it or something, cheers guys.
The connectivity icon at the top right of the screen shows what communication protocol is being used by showing a symbol (usually just a single letter) in a solid square. The letters I have seen so far are:
G - GPRS (2G)
E - EDGE
3G - 3G (this is the odd one out with the two letters squashed together)
H - HSDPA
It's worth mentioning that on my train ride home I see all four protocols at different points, and the hand-off between them is very smooth.
thanks for quick reply i will keep an eye on it, still no joy with my ringer though its very strange. never had a problem like it on my orbit. i will keep investigating ,also do you know if anyone will be coming up with a rom for zest as i miss manila 2d although mobile shell v3 is good.
Have you checked:
Start->Settings->Sounds & Notifications
On the Notifications tab you can select the "Ring type", one possible choice of which is "Vibrate", which will make the phone only vibrate on incoming calls. Just guessing.
yes ive tried all that it might be affected by software ive installed recently i will try unistalling them one by one and see if that helps, failing that il do a hard reset i guess, anyone know how to hard reset the zest? thanks for your help.
There is a contortional key sequence for this, but you can also reset it by going to:
Start->Settings->System Tab->Default Settings
cheers managed to sort it , i installed mini lyrics software and ticked all in associating files which for some reason stopped the phone from ringing
thanks for your help.
Failure of firmware upgrade
Ive just had a power failure whilst upgrading the firmware on my new xda Zest and all it it shows when turning on is "OS Update failed! Please update again". Is there anything i can about this or will it need to be returned to O2. Any suggestions. thanx
