On The Same Day That We Hear Of DeepFish, The Minimo Project Which Is Hosted By Mozilla Releases An Update. It Can Handle Modern Web Standards Such As Javascript And Ajax Check It Out Here.
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/minimo/
Cheers
Thanks for the headsup. Looks nice. A bit slower to fire up, but the features look pretty good.
the o2 wap site works incorrectly, acts like a download rather than a page.
I may need to configure this a bit more.
Thanks for the tip. Loading from the SD card takes quite a while... I'll try main memory to see what happens.
You serious? I am going to check this out now...
I am surprised, I had been reading the developer's blog and he had pretty much given up on the project saying that he didn't have time to write\update the app and that they were thinking of following another route to keep Firefox\Mozilla presence in the mobile market, but oh well, I am not complaining.
Okay, downloaded and installed -- yes, I am multi-tasking-- nice... nice... much better than the previous version. Still... uh... slow though.
Let me play with it a little more.
Thanks for the tip.
I installed it and it much better than previous verson. I might actually keep it on my 8525.
I would suggest anyone trying it first go to option and disable soft keyboard and also enable cache to storage card.
I have done several javascript testing on some sites which I know almost all mobile browser chokes on it and minimo actually breeze thur it.
It still a tad bit slow but I am impressed how it handled some of the websites now.
After playing with it last night.
I can honestly say that I am disappointed. After hitting a page earlier I decided to try again. I am a huge Firefox fan however this update left a lot to be desired. Yes, it is only Ver. 0.2 so it is far, far away from being finished.
I installed it on the memory card. Not that it should really make a difference since I have Webby and Opera installed there and they run without quibble.
I must have really bad luck since when I enter an address, all I get is another tab of empty white space.
Tried www.google.ca ... nothing.
Tried www.fido.ca ... just another empty tab.
Heck, tried clicking on preferences.... and... nothing. Just another empty tab.
Aside the Homebase tab I was not able to see anything. What happened with this thing???

Uh? What are you asking exactly?
Opera Mini does not compress pages at all.
Opera gets its data from a cache servers at Opera's headquarters. Opera Mini by itself compresses nothing.
To answer your question, Minimo is a full fledge browser like Opera or PIE.
I know - but for me that does not matter anything.. I only look at how it works, and how much trafic I have to pay for.
And if Minimo or other Mob Browsers does not use any compression tools - I believe they will generate far to much trafic, to become any serious alternative...
I pay around 1½ Euro for a MB and when roaming - I do not even dare to investigate prices... hehe
But I find it cool to get new browsers and I might use another when on WIFI - perhaps Minimo
I found that Opera Mini, is not the best compared to the full fledge browsers.
However interesting how things change to different people around the world. Over here in Canada, I am one of the few people --as the plan no longer exists-- to pay $50 for unlimited data through HSDPA. So to me the data aspect means nothing and since I tether through my laptop, well, lets just say that just yesterday alone because of my laptop, I used about 250 megs.
I am more about the usability and end user experience.
Too bad Minimo didn't seem to work with WM6.
Perhaps other people on WM6 encounter the same experience?
Seemes to still be almost unusably slow to me. Just pressing the buttons on the bottom seems to take too long. What's worse, copy/pasting URLs from my IM client into the Minimo address bar alone made it crash out at times.

In Denmark you can have unlimited for $85 with "3", but then you have TV-channels along with the offer - X-series. But still its quite expensive cause one still have to pay for calls... I have an old plan with 750 minuttes a month for $85 - so to put an unlimited data plan on top would give me an incredible phone bill every month... $85+$85... And by the way. At home I have a 4mb/768kb ADSL that costs another $85...
So... KEEP EXPENSIVES LOW --- hehehe..
By the way. I find that Opera Mini is very fast, and a lot faster than the build in browser - even when its on WIFI.
i tried to sign up deepfish but it has expired i have the cab someone posted but no reg key so.
is there any other browser that is similar to deepfish available for wm6
Yea it's called Picsel Browser. you can find it somewhere on here or google it
The beta version of Mini Opera has a very good page overview feature, which is a good step forward.
Browse to mini.opera.com on your phone or go to http://www.operamini.com/beta/
Picsel browser is really really bad. It was a good concept, but it really poor implementation.
The new Opera Mini beta does an ok job, but still being a beta, it is rather buggy.
I think the key issue here is WTF happened to deep fish? Microsoft pushed it aside and to the bottom of it's list like it does with ALL Windows Mobile stuff. Such a shame MS doesn't care more about the mobile market.
Deepfish wasn't anywhere close to release, it was a development "sneak-peak". I'm sure they're still working on it. As for Picsel, it was a great browser for it's time. Don't know why you think it was poorly implemented. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of what we require in a browser nowadays, but neither did any of the others when it came out. And as for Opera Mini, it only has overview and zoomed in modes, nothing in between, which makes it just as useless as all the current ones in my opinion. Still waiting for Opera Mobile 9 to come out.
I assure you, they have had how many months to make it work? And they haven't done anything with it...
Face it, MS doesn't care a bit about the mobile market, we will never see any real effort from MS. I'm pretty convinced they have 2 guys there that are their mobile development team, lol
I tried DeepFish months ago and it had some promise. But, MS would drag their feet on fixing the reported bugs. Also, the beta would not allow cookies even though this had been a priority request of the community. I dropped it due to lack of MS support.

I totally disagree. Picsel browser is a fantastic piece of software and one of the first things I install after a ROM update. Not only does it to a bang-up job for daily browsing, but it is my default viewer for all documents, especially PDF and graphic files.
OP, seriously, give it a try and see for yourself... ESPECIALLY for docs.

The problem is it is a poor implementation , the software itself is amazing !
I've used this softawre in my E680i , no doubt , it is excellent when view M$ office document and PDF file .
So the problem should be Picsel never intend to release a general version of it's software , only for specific device ...
Ummm ... I wonder what it will looks like if a Hermes version is available .
Hmm... I don't get what the problem with Picsel is?! I never experienced any problems... No crashes, no memory errors. And I use it regularly especially for web-browsing...
i googled for Picsel browser but couldnt find any download links!?
mkmonkey: we hacked out the Picsel browser from a Samsung rom some time back, and there were any device compatible versions released. However, due to copyright reasons we were asked not to distribute it. I'm sure you'll be able to track it down though.
If you do find a copy on the board, please notify me so I or the other mods can delete it.
However, IMHO, I like it very much. There are other browsers, probably Opera or NetFront, that work more "robustly", but Picsel works nicely, and makes a good light doc viewer and pdf viewer as well, so all in, it's a good compromise. I used it for several months and it made my mobile browsing experience (on the Universal, VGA, with some hacks to make it a good deal sexier) significantly more enjoyable then Pocket Internet Explorer.
V
hmm ask not to distribute huh?
well, mabye u could send me a PM with a "hidden" link, when picsel isnt watching .
edit: nvm, found it.
Problem with Picsel is that it does not always create its own internet connection. On a XV6700, you have to open a connection first (by send/receive email or opening PIE) before launching Picsel. This is a pain to do every time. For this reason, I use it only when I need to view documents close up. Also does not seem to work with flash. Why WM devices still ship with such a crappy browser is beyond me when there are so many better alternatives, but with spotty flash support.
My biggest problem with Picsel was that when you scrolled, it did not render on the fly. You had to stop for it to display the new section of the page. Anyone have a version that did it properlY?

I posted a workaround for that problem, maybe you're interested:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=277812&page=7
In that thread you find a small helper-program which you can bind to a key on your device to manually establish an internet-connection without having to start PIE.

Uhm, what did that have to do with the sentence you quoted?
How do i use a proxy connection with the Picsel browser?
As far as I know Picsel does not support a proxy... Which is bad because most WAP flatrates depend on proxies... :-/
I've developed an AJAX-based chat app that runs in PocketIE and Opera Mobile (which runs on Symbian devices as well), but I'm wondering how much need there is for this especially since we're free to install whatever software we wish on our phones, unlike some other phone. Anyway, this is just a poll to see how useful you guys think this is, especially if you have a Symbian-based device as well.
Just FYI, the app has the ability to communicate with multiple IM networks, much like meebo.
Wait, PIE supports AJAX? Now I am truly surprised.
Yup, it supports the creation of the XMLHTTP object in JavaScript, and PIE in WM6 even supports document.getElementById, which is a good thing It's just that web developers have been ignoring mobile devices for the longest time and are lazy with their code. Now that the iPhone is out, everyone is developing AJAX apps for it, which pisses me off a little
I'm down to beta test it!!
I am definitely interested. I have yet to find a chat client that has the right combination of usability, features and price. Not to mention the tendency to draw a lot of power. It would be interesting to see if a web-based client would fare better in that respect.
ummm.... yes pls?
Yes.
A MobileIM through PocketIE would be great for when im on the school networks and all ports but 80 are blocked..
Unfortunately I've been very busy this whole week, especially since fall quarter has started once more, so I haven't made a whole lot of progress with the app. I made a whole bunch of changes to make it easier for users to register and login, which took up most of my time. I'll try to get screen shots up soon. I am very limited, however, but the resolution of most Pocket PCs and the limited CSS & HTML support in Pocket IE. Which also reminds me, you need WM6 to run the site - it won't work with WM5, but that's why I posted it in this forum I do apologize and thank you for your patience!
Update: I finally got around to updating the code to make it more user-friendly, and the server-side stuff is pretty stable now as well. I'm interested in having a small group of people beta test so I have an idea of expectations, various network conditions and usability. If you're interested, please PM me and I'll give you the address to visit

THANK YOU OPERA! ! ! !
No really, this is great. I can't wait. All browsers on WM have their vice's (including Opera), but still, every time I keep coming back for Opera Mobile goodness.
I checked out the Turbo function on the Opera 10 Alpha, and its pretty good. I hope the rendering is faster and more effective, since that (processing power) is still a weak point on WM devices.
Can't wait
Opera 9.7 sounds really good, almost too good to be true.
Can't wait to give it a try.
Hope the startup is as quick as Opera Mini - cause that's a dream to use!!
now they are also doing geolocation
http://wmpoweruser.com/?p=3887
Opera and Skyhook Wireless Bring Geolocation to the Web
from wmpoweruser by admin
Opera Software and Skyhook Wireless today announced their partnership to bring geolocation to the Web. Users can now simply choose to share their location with any Web site and get a range of information about related products and services around them. Whether it is local searching, social networking, geotagging photos, local advertising or discovering nearby content, geolocation is a key factor in creating a relevant and meaningful experience on the Web.
Traditionally, geolocation was considered as being only a part of a downloadable mobile application, but, with Skyhook’s Wi-Fi Positioning System (WPS), any computer or mobile phone with a wireless adapter can take advantage of its advanced positioning technology and locate a user, making this service available to any Web site.
“Location is always relevant when someone is browsing the Web,” said Tatsuki Tomita, SVP of consumer products at Opera Software. “By embedding Skyhook’s technology into Opera and making it available through the W3C Geolocation API, we ensure that every Opera user gets the same, high-quality, location-based experience out of the gate.”
With the new W3C Geolocation Application Programming Interface (API), Opera will make Skyhook Wireless’ groundbreaking location platform available to any Web developer with just a few lines of JavaScript. For example, a popular coffee chain will write the necessary JavaScript code on their Web site, Opera will ask the user for approval, then the location will be submitted to the Web site servers and their service will display the coffee shop locations nearest to the user on a map.
“Making accurate and reliable geolocation available over JavaScript to any Web developer means Skyhook’s market leading platform will be in the hands of a whole new world of developers and we expect to see the explosion of location-based services on the Web,” said Ryan Sarver, director of consumer products at Skyhook Wireless.
A technology preview for their desktop browser is available for download at http://labs.opera.com/.

I don't think so
This really looks amazing, i cannot wait to try it out when it's available!
All I ask for is Opera Bookmark sync. Hopefully this will be included.
I've also been searching for a possibility to edit the Opera-Mobile-bookmarks on the PC to get kind of sync. And I found a - I have to give in not very comfortable - solution.
All you have to do is to edit your 'opera6.adr'-file. You can either replace the one on your X1 with one made by Opera on the PC or you can also open the file with the Editor on your PC and edit it how you want it.

Not new News of opera 9.7?
gretZ,

really excited to the opera 9.7.
Hope the flash problem really solved in the new version
my biggest problem with current version of opera in that you have to "zoom in" to click on links, as aposed to selecting them in the "zoomed out" mode. You get what I mean?

yeah, know what u mean
i really really want adobe to release a decent flash plugin (or opera should come up with another solution)
Hope the new one can play youtube movies directly from the website they are buildin. Watching www.pocketnow.com I can only see black boxes with "play" sign on it. When there's no link to www.youtube.com its hard to find the one.
this is a bit of speculation.. but i thought id share:

to articles claiming a release of tommrow
It's probably not going to happen. Turns out, Opera are quite prone to simply giving up on software and never getting round to releasing new versions. It's as if they have some attention deficit disorder, except on a company scale.
Iris is probably better, anyhow.
Opera 9.7 beta ftp link
ftp://ftp.opera.com/pub/opera/winmobile/970b1/
Freeware PPC, and the numerous FTP sites, along with device update, and PDM.
These are the many places I've fund over 85 different applications("apps") that I run on Windows Mobile 6.x.x. These all being in many places, sometimes hard to find, sometimes easy to find. Other "apps" include going to a website, made for and by the "app" parent company.
I have around 500 cabs on my HDD, updating and reorganizing them all the time.
Now say I make up a handy spreadsheet(on my phone) That goes over screen size Supported OS versions, and various other things including a description. Is there any way that someone else, that has a lot better understanding of mobile "app" writing than I do, take the info I compile, and apply it to their Marketplace for window Mobile, the real one.
I would hope to include my best Icon(that may take a while), and Potentially server mirroring the apps, since I already keep all the "apps" I use and have acquired, in a very organized fashion.
The style of PDM I like a lot more than M$Marketplace, the search feature is nice(sorting ITL and WWE is convenient. The touch interface, such as the drop down info, is also well implemented.
Device Update on the other hand it awesome, its simple, very similar to the OS it runs on.
I know WinMo is dead, within a few months from this threads initial post, it will be outdated, and completely forgotten shortly thereafter. But I know plenty of people sticking with at least one older model(e.g. HD2) and the apps are really out there.
Anyone care to work on this? I just lost my main PC and have been using my phones word processor and multiple web browsers to keep myself as close to a real PC as possible, this also had me downloading apps for usage similar to what I was doing on my PC.
Alongside this, I read an article about why someone is using the iPhone 4 as a "daily driver." When it came to his comparison of the apple, android, and WinMo marketplaces, he went over how although there is always an app there for WinMo its painstakingly hard to find. This is true(at least to those average consumers) and as he mentioned the Marketplace holds 1100 "apps."
I've been using a PPC since 05-06(can't remember...) and love what WinMo has had I.M.O. Over the other OS's. I have always been able to find exactly an app(s) for that. Normally in the larger "collections" I've grabbed from the net, there are thousands in each 0day pack and he was releasing them on a regular basis.
I also know that this could really help the platform, it would be the user made the marketplace. Then what's stopping M$ from handing us helpful(outdated e.g.. code) info that can make our app store even better.
I don't want a mimicking app store(although a skinnable one would beat unique) I just want something that can help out and be user made, user maintained.
Let me know what you guys think.
I worte, and published thi from my TyTn II(at&t tilt)

Your repository would be a great addition to it ... I will point him to this thread as I have pointed to his
Hope to see a great partnership come in place !
I would love it if you upload your cab files to the xda market
If you have an idea what could be improved on the xda market or a feature you would love to be added just PM me. Every new idea is welcome.
EDIT:
Nearly I forgott:
This is the official thread for the xda market: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=707988
Wow, I saw this thread drop off the main page listing so fast, I figured all was missed.
Glad to find the App that's here already, Just got my Tilt2 Monday, was busy borrowing other peoples internets to flash deepshining on it. Got it up and working the same day I got it.
I'll try to get my FTP server back up. I'm currently running all my computers in my office on shared shared internet. Tethering to my main rig, and sharing the net to the other three. My switch recently died, and the wire running from the lower floor died shortly thereafter. I've been only online with my phone.
After I get the XDA app store on my phone, I'll compare my list to yours, then null out the duplicates. The spreadsheet I can custom tailor to similar categories, but I haven't seen the layout yet. Hopefully it will only take me a few days to write up some descriptions.
