New To Cooking - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Hello all i am new to cooking and i was wondering a few things...
my main thing is that i have a usb worm on my comp. would this have any affect on my ppc if i was to use active sync???
also i was wondering if i was to cook a rom how can i upload it on here for some one to beta test it for me???
also wondering what i need to do to my phone to use a custom rom
My phone is a VX6700 ppc

hello please can any one help me

Which HTC model is that? The first step is figuring out what htc device you have. The forum that corresponds with your device will have a wealth of information on rom cooking. And yes, someone will try your rom if it's good enough. So, do your homework! The worm you have shouldn't affect activesync, although it might if you try to sync it with a different computer.

ok my main concern was the virus and my phone is an apache but i dont know jack about them al i have ever worked with was the wing and wizard

ROMs from other phones

Can I use a ROM from one model phone to another. Ex. can I use the ROM from a Blackstone and use it on a Fuze? I know I can use the blackstone radio but how about the ROM?
thanks

NO!
You can't use another device ROM or RADIO.
thank you sir, but you say you cant use the radio either? in other forums people are using different radios, ex. blackstone radio on a raphael, (fuze)
Yes you can use radios in 2 cases:
1) the radios are compatible. If you're not sure, don't flash it.
2) the phone is security unlocked.
Also, to use a ROM from another device it must be dumped and then ported in a Kitchen, you can't just flash it. The Kernel's and drivers just won't work.
Dave
Well, a teacher I had, always told "you can, but you must not". You can jump down from the roof of a highscraper, but you should not have to do it...
So, you MUST NOT flash a ROM of a device into another different one. Yes, you have tools to do it, but you'll probably get an electronic brick to put in any hole of a brick wall.
There's a part of the ROM which is specific for the device. Another part is specific for the OS. So, some parts of a ROM are related to WM6.1 or WM6.5, etc. and some others are related to a device. That's what is called the Kernel, mainly related to a nk.exe file inside the ROM files. In example, we can run WM6.5 into a Kaiser with a nk.exe belonging to a kaiser and WM6.1... BUT for running same OS of a different device, (i.e. Opal's WM6.1 into Kaiser) you'll completely inutilize (maybe forever) the device. Yes, you can do it if sou have enough money to buy another device, but if you don't want it, I suggest you to send me your device or give it for charity, but not to destroy it.
Another thing you can do is, as you were told, "dumping" the ROM, this is extracting all the files and structure, and then port it (this is, adapting it) to your device's needs - this means, getting your specific drivers and kernel files and substituting them into the folders you obtained of the ROM. (Also, getting the correct screen resolution files). In example, nk.exe and other files will be different for a Kaiser and for a Herald. And you should have different Camera files, as the drivers are different for one device and the other one. Also, a Touch HD uses different screen resolution that a Herald... so you must find the correct files for every device.
This looong post is to tell you that using ROMs from other phones is RISKY and also it GETS LOTS OF JOB (and TIME), and you'll always miss something. Only good, big teams, like to do it, not an only person. And they spend days, weeks, and must correct bugs and make trials and risk their devices even if they have lots of experience.
thanks
thanks folks, makes complete sense..
this leads to another question, how do you know if the radio is compatible with another device, ex. the blackstone radio with a raphael? I know the simple answer is to read the forums, which I have, but besides taking someones word for it, how do you know?

You have to know about the chips in the phone and what's in the radio firmwhere, I leave it upto the experts .
Just take peoples word for it, if in doubt, don't use it.

A little advice?

hello all, I currently have a tilt and am looking to upgrade to a cooked rom. I have my old 8525 Hermes/win 5 that I wanted to upgrade first (to get used to process) before bricking my tilt. I've done much reading & found all the hrd splsh & CID info for my Kaiser but not sure what to use for my 8525.
Can anyone pls, give me link to best hrd splsh for my 8525 to use. If all goes well with my 8525 im going to move on to my tilt. Any advice or warnings would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
Srry folks, I've found what I'm looking for. I THINK! Trying it now. If this is wrong guide pls advice!
http://www.mrvanx.org/thg/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=16&Itemid=26
It's the right one .
Great... Hrd Splsh was successful! Now I'm off to the races. Just not sure what race to begin with... Any advice on most popular cooked rom to begin with.
And any tips greatly appreciated.
Depends on you... if you want something to play with, try the latest ROMs from TAI (Hero V3) and +QuePPC (Moonspell B2).
Sweet, Found the downloads for those roms! Much appreciated!!!
Do I do the same process as I did to hrd splsh my phone? If not do you know of quick quide to explain steps?
And do you know if that same hrd splsh that I just did will work on my tilt as well?
Just double-click on the RUU_Wrapper.exe and follow the steps, that's it. I'd recommend you to go into bootloader mode first (press and hold power and OK button on left side and reset with stylus) and then connect to your PC, I think it's more reliable .
Every device has its own HSPL.
thxs, I've upgraded to win 6 stripped rom first as QuePPC recommended but when I try to download one of his roms rapid share says the dowload has reached it's limit of 10 and is unavailable. I did find one that was available. I'm going to try it, but in the folder it has a ruwrapper & romupdate utility. I am supposed to click the ruwrapper correct? If so how & when do you use the update utility?
It's all uploaded to MediaFire, isn't it? I'd recommend the latest 28008 if you want a 6.5.x ROM.
And there should be only two files, RUU_Wrapper.exe and ruu_signed.nbh. All other files are automatically generated after you choose the SPL version, perhaps it's a mistake, anyway you don't need to bother about the other file.
BTW you don't need to wait for the customization of the AT&T ROM to finish, just enter the bootloader immediately after you flashed it, saves a lot of time .
I dowloaded Mirion B4 Plain...... ran ruwrapper and Hermes is now modified for first time in 3 years! Sad I know!!! Pretty cool, yet it is plain..... Was first one I could find available from his links... here is the site he has listed...
http://www.techparaiso.com/roms/htc-tytnhermes-queppc/
Well im going to do it a couple more times then attemt the grandaddy of them all "for me that is" moding my tilt. If I brick it the wife will "Brick" me! LOL
I do appreciate all your help you were extremely friendlyl and not rude like many of the replies I've read to noobs.
Thanks again,
newtiltguy
The 28008 are listed at the top... anyway, try for yourself (and give +Que some feedback in his thread).
No problem, man .
If you the SDCard method I can almost guarantee that you won't have to worry about bricking any device! Flashing via USB cable is always risky 10x more if you are flashing a Radio or a ROM with the Radio in.
As long as you installed Hard SPL V7.... ;D

I am running NRGz 21855 Dec 31st Standard build and it is pretty sweet. A few bugs but it is still nice. NRG also puts out another TP2 ROM which is less than bleeding edge but more stable codenamed Pheonix. Also sense 2.8 (used to be called Manila) has recently been released for the Leo so we will see it baked into Roms including the above listed one very soon!
Omg kroniced thank you to for repling, Im having a hard time with this, there is a good chance im going to be asking for help. Thanks alot for the link man, I really mean it.

So what exactly happens when you run Rhodium-HardSPL_V2_00R3.EXE? Is it a connection error, a program error, a device error? If you have a Tilt2, you probably need to install this to your device before you run the executable. BTW, you're not backing up your device with HardSPL, you're replacing the stock, HTC bootloader with a patched bootloader, a process which you only need to do once. It's also not necessary to back up your device before flashing a new ROM, it's just recommended if you have important stuff saved to main memory, since you lose all the data on your device each time you flash. You will not lose data when installing HardSPL with this executable.
Hay thanks for reasponeding DaveTheTytnIIGuy, here is what the error seys, "ERROR
[246] Device not reasponding" -"The update utillity cannot get respones from your PDA phone. Please check that your USB cradle/cable is connected properly between the pc and your PDA phone. And also check your PDA phone."

A .cab is an installer, just like an EXE or MSI on a desktop computer. Don't uncompress it, just put the .cab file as is onto your device, disconnect your device from the computer, browse to wherever you put it with File Explorer Mobile, and open it. Install it to internal memory and you're done. Also, try disabling your Antivirus/Firewall and ensure you have Windows Mobile Device Center (Vista/7) or ActiveSync (XP and lower). And no offence, but you might want to hold off on flashing for a little while, at least until you get a bit more acquainted with Windows Mobile. I recommend that everyone who flashes their device at least understand the technical aspects, since that highly reduces chances of bricking as an end result.
DaveTheTyntIIGuy thank so much I did what u sed and i instolled it with no problems to my phone. You just helped me in a big way. Now I know how to download programes to my phone. So I think I have an idea how to do what i first came here to do. But your are rite 100%, I gotta get a understanding of this before I do anything so I dont screw up my phone. Thank you alot. So now that I downloaded the enablerapinew my phone is ready for when I decide to get a new interface on the phone like the Manila 2.5 / 2.8 / ext. ?
Get accustomed to you phone by doing the minor cabs and tweaks found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=524655
Most of this stuff is harmless and will get you use to using cabs and changing things on your phone.

No, that .cab enables RAPI (Remote API) on the Tilt2, which allows programs like the HardSPL unlocker, on the PC, to control the device to an extent, which it needs to do in order to flash HardSPL.
Hi, How can I get the actual version of manila running on my Tilt 2
Thanks
It's listed in this key in your registry:
Its HKLM\Software\Manila\Version

minor correction: HKLM\Software\HTC\Manila\Version
On the stock Tilt2, the version is 2.1.19183217.0
Note that this can also be seen by looking at the About section of the Settings tab in TF3D.
This is awsome DaveTheTytnIIGuy, the programe you sent me worked. I was suscussfully able to flash my HardSPL, with Rhodium-HardSPL_V2_00R3. Thank you. So now I'm up to the next step witch is finding a ROM.
Is it possible to get Manila without flashing a cooked rom or is manila a cooked rom? I guess what I am asking is Can you get Manila as a CAB file or do you have to flash it as a ROM?

The only way to get a different version of Manila is to change ROMs. If you're using the stock ROM, you'll need to switch to a cooked ROM to get one of the newer versions of Manila.

[Q] install androidOS after HSPL cooked rom?

I flashed HardSPL on my tilt 2 last year with the Energy Rom using the GTX theme. Ever since I've been noticing that android is so much easier to use and I have been reading on the android Froyo development.
What I need to know is if I have to reflash Stock Rom with SSPL to be able to Flash the Android OS to it.
I've read all the FAQs and I have not seen this question on it and am wondering if anyone can answer it for me.
I don't know if I missed it or if I was looking for the answer at the wrong place.
So can someone please give me a link to a guide on how to do it properly because I don't want to brick my phone on the process. Also tips and precautions if you got any. Thank you!
Android can't be flashed to the phone a la WinMo yet.
Devs are working on it. Works great on my CDMA RHOD, but GSM is still a mystery...
To answer your question, you would need an unlocked bootloader (hSPL) to flash any unsigned image.
Android in its current form for our devices will run on stock SPL or hSPL, it doesn't care... everything runs off the SD card.
more questions
What is an Unasigned Image and what does it do or what is it for? Thank you for your answers.
Also how fast does Froyo run on the SD card. Is it slow? Is there a program to make android to auto start instead of it having to transtion from WM to android?

Unsigned image = anything that's not a stock ROM.
FroYo runs about as well as you can expect on our hardware... which I might mention predates Android entirely... Proc+RAM dates to 2007 on the TP2. Thanks HTC...
For making Android auto-start, search is your friend. Gen.Y is your answer.
Oh nice I didnt see it was you arrgggh. Ive read you posts all day for the past 3 days. I constantly wonder how you guys know all this stuff.
Have you guys thought about video instructions or image instructions for the forum?
I also had a question concerning your device. When you flashed the Cooked Rom on your device ( i know, not the android, its not cooked ) did it change the buttons on your keyboard? Mine did and Ive been looking like crazy for a program that allows me to set the keys to what ever character I want. I did come across it a year ago, but nowadays that post is long gone. Thank you for all your help.

Video/image instructions...? A few have made videos, but stuff changes so frequently it would get outdated very quickly. A PITA to maintain... It's really not that difficult, is it?
I assume you're talking WinMo. I haven't used it in over a year - but there was some weird issue that effected only Sprint devices, and there was some cab that I installed that fixed the issue. Sorry, I'm not much help for WinMo. Ask cajunflavoredbob, I just tell people not to use it .

[Q] Installing KangBang 3.0

Hello XDA,
I've been following you for years. I started following you with my first Android phone, an HTC Hero. I've been very happy to be able to use a community ROM that made a far better experience than the stock ROM.
I recently got a brand new HTC One V PrimoU, and I'd like to make it my new polyvalent tool.
I'm not a noob in computers, kernel/linux related stuff, electronics, networking. I already tried some ROMs. In fact, I started with KangBang 3.0 (the same version as now I think), but both WiFi and BlueTooth were not working. Android could not even detected the WiFi MAC address, so I guess it was a driver or wireless chip firmware related problem. I think I was the only one affected, so it was maybe a bad flash or I used the wrong kernel. I did'nt investigate more at the time, but if it happens again to me, I'll send some system/kernel logs.
I then tried AOKP, had a great (really) experience with it, except that the Jack plug sound quality was awful. No bass, only mid/high tones. I even thought my speakers were dead at first, but then tried with headphones. Now, I want to try KangBang again, because that ROM was good, and fast, just missing WiFi.
TL;DR
I'd like to ask some precise questions about KangBang and the HTC One V.
I initially wanted to ask in the ROM dev thread, but can't since I'm a new user, so I ask here. Sorry if the questions are stupid/simple/answered, but let's make a clear base, with precise interrogations and answers, so that they will never be asked again
The kernel is included in the .zip file. Still, do we need to flash manually ? Or will the Aroma installer handle that ?
What about ROM Manager ? Is it recommended to use or is it a good way to brick a phone as I heard ?
Does this ROM change the base Android system and file structure ? Would it be compatible with a side-by-side installation of a Linux system such as Debian ? (To see what I mean by side by side installation of Linux, search Debian Kit for Android on Google, as I can't post links)
Also, I'd like to tell ROM makers these advices (don't take them bad, I you think I'm wrong about them there's no problem, just tell me why) :
It would not be a bad idea to give a simple statistic about the ROM : the load average with the ROM installed on an idle and clean phone. That would give a good indication of idle power consumption and ressource wasting.
I see that users reporting problems with their devices NEVER include any kind of debug information. Maybe you should ask for them, just because by searching for this debug information they might solve the problem themselves. Most Android systems and kernels report a LOT of information, that we can access with simple commands such as dmesg.
Last but not least, I would like to thank you, ROM developers and XDA users for allowing me to play this way with my phone, and to make it work exactly the way I want.
Hugo G.,
ummm this device has kangbang?? (btw questions go into q&a )
so i'll move onto the TL;DR which i was grateful for
1) The rom thread should say what kernel but yes, we don't have s-off so flashed manually
2) Ignore rom manager don't touch it
3) think of it as the differences say with debian vs ubuntu vs mint all basically debian but all with they're own differences (pros and cons)
also about the "suggestions" to the devs, that will NEVER go down well, why should YOU suggest to use what to put in the threads also i know in my threads i ASK for logcats time and time again...
hope this helps
if you need more info i'll be welcome to add more, but 1st i need sleep BADLY
