You could just flash a stock HTC rom or flash one of the custom ROMs here. Either way, you will have a branded-free phone. Just check the threads and find a ROM that you like. Since you almost certainly have a GSM phone, don't flash a CDMA (Sprint) ROM as that will most likely brick your phone.
If you ask the XDA wiki these same questions, you will find your answers in details.
2 simple steps:
1: hardspl
2: flash a rom from the forum
...
3: rt*m
have a look here this helped me alot at first.

being difficult is all part of the jounery here
when you are going to flash you will lose all data on the internal memory you will find some free backup software on this site to use.
I have Vista and windows mobile center works well for me.

Use PPC PimBackup for SMS's, contacts etc.
For programs, think about using sashimi.
You can TRY Sprite Backup, but I wouldn't recommend it as a primary solution.
Last but not least, use the search feature.
Questions similar to yours have been answered A LOT of times previously.
Help yourself, and you will be helped. Don't expect us to spoon feed you.

Not necessarily true. A diamond is much easier to unlock (yellowsn0w isn't a true unlock anyways).

Please take time to read the Diamond wiki pages and search the forum, you're not the first noob on this site, and if everyone of them created thier own thread, what state would the forum be in
There are forum guidelines for a reason.

Dear all,
I contacted HTC for my device upgrading and ROM updates, and they direct me to this forum.
I have a TyTN unlocked device, and want to upgrade to WM6. I explored all what you posted here but couldn't decide which version and link is suitable for me. Any way, here down my device information, and I'm appreciating any help to upgrade my device to WM6.
Device Information:
Device Name: HTC TyTN (Unlocked)
Language: English
Processor: SC32442A - 400MHz
Memory: 49.05 MB
System: Windows Mobile 5.0 OS 5.1.195 (Build 14955.2.3.0)
That are all information I could get from my device
Need Help my friends.
After all, I beleive that HTC should have an upgrade area to support their devices.
Thank you in advance.
Hi there!
its good to know that HTC assistants sent you here on this forum !!
I can suggest you to go for the wm6 image black 2.5 as its been always the most stable for me, so read the wiki and all the documents to upgrade your hermes to that version.
http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=37&Itemid=26
and don't run in the upgrade, take your time to read everything and if you don't understand something, come back here.

It depends on your personal reasons for upgrading. If you want to upgrade because of more speed and more stability you should try Black 2.5. If you are doing it because of adventuresomeness you should give all of the great roms here a try.
But at least you should try Black 2.5, Duttys V2 and Custels 1.3 to find out which one is the best for you. You should also try different radios to see if theres a difference in your area.
And don't forget the most important object: read mrvanx upgrade guides very very carefully and follow every step exactly.
be aware that the ROMs here are *unofficial* and *unsupported* ROMs.
HTC will NOT help you out if you screw up your device.
if you are unsure about flashing, then stay with the stock ROM.
I have a UK unlocked Tytn and would very strongly recommend Black 2.5.
My first ever ROM upgrade was Black 1.2 and it was soo god. 2.0 was even better and 2.5 better still. Have had no problems, battery life is much better, doesn't lockup/freeze any more, loads more memory available.....i could go on.
Go for it - follow mrvanx's upgrade guide. he makes it very easy
Flashig roms is one way... be careful...
When I first flashed a WM6 Rom on to my HERMES I made sure I read all the preinstall instructions very carefully as I didn't have a clue about flashing. MR VANX's guide is excellent, follow it carefully and you can't go wrong.
I have now successfully flashed numerous ROMS on to my device.
No-one can tell you which is the best ROM as they are all excellent for their own different features and customisations. You will need to try a few and see which you like best.
Good Luck.
I highly doubt
That an HTC representative sent someone here for ROM updates to WM 6.0.
If they did and are caught, they will probably be terminated.
I deal with HTC regularly and they don't condone or encourage our methods of tuning and research.
Be careful out there.
Thank you
Thank you a lot for your replies guys. They helped me a lot. I'll do the upgrade and will back to you with the results. Thanks again.

It always amazes me how corporate structures can be so schizoid. I too have received- from in-the-trenches personel- a pointer to this site specifically for beta testing WM6 Push. Conversely, the moderators here made it clear that management at HTC was a major impetus behind MS's request that the ftp archives be pulled.
The kicker for me is that the Wiki on HTC's US site specifically points to this XDA-developers and those postings are all vetted by someone at HTC USA. I'm thankful for that because that's how I found this site in the first place.
My Upgrading Status
First of all, I would like to add my voice to (teambnet) that I'm thankful for them to made me know this website and forum in the first place.
OK, about my upgrading status guys, I did exactely as shown in mrvanx.org website and did install WM6 Black 2.5, everything is gone fine except one thing, that the button of contact voice tag is not working. When I push that button, it gives me a message "Error opening the shortcut or locating the target filename.", I tried then to assign the shortcut to a program by going to Start --> Settings --> Buttons, but I couldn't find the program that should be assigned. I don't know if my problem are clear or not but I tried to explain as much I could. Any suggestions to solve that?
Thanks all,

I always suspected that secretly HTC were using us as beta testing guinea pigs, now it looks like I was right! And half of the fixes for their bugs are created by developers on this site.
Seriously though, if your Hermes is no longer covered by the original HTC warranty (as mine was from the very first day I got it, since I bought it from an "unauthorized" distributor), then HTC have nothing to lose by pointing someone to this site. They might as well have said, "Flush it down the toilet for all we care..."
John
HTC's wiki is just like ours, anyone can edit it... So i doubt that HTC themselves put a link to XDA on their wiki, but someone else probably did..
You need to install the voice commander CAB located on the first page of BLACK2.5 Then remap the button.
You should read thru the numerous posted before asked already resolved issues. Congrats on the UPGRADE!!!

Finally Finished
Hi all,
Thank you stuckes, I did as you told me and everything gone very nice. WM6 is a nice OS, not that much different from WM5 at least for me. But, it's nice. Thank you all for your help in that.
I got a question, when I would to upgrade, there are many versions of WM6, Black2.5 and other versions, where can I find a complete comparison with screenshots of them to decide if I'm gonna change to another one or stick to black 2.5?

I keep seeing in these forums many threads regarding ROMs. I know what they are but my question is...why should I mess with it. I have an HTC Touch GSM with WM6. Now if you tell me I can get the interface in general to be quicker and the wifi to connect sooner, then i'm sold.

youll be very suprised at how much of a difference it makes to flash your phone with a rom itll make it faster due to the applications that u dont use water down ur programming memory and that can be released and run faster with them gone ...just look around and find one that fits ur use..promise u will be happy...just one thing to remember ..Read he insructions carefully and dont be scared to ask any questions ..have fun
Perfection,
I guess so, sound logical. What would be the best ROM for the HTC Touch GSM, I've always felt that the phone is a little hesistant, and I've done the best that i've could in stoping animations, sounds and some registry hacks. I mostly use the Office Suite, Messenger, Skype and Netfront Browser. Then on trips the mp3 player and cameras.
Just in case I have a whole assortment of 3rd party software like: Pocket CM, PCM Keyboard, SIP Change and SPB Mobile Shell, in case it's neccessary to know.
Also, how does one go abouts installing this, i have both Mac and PC, so as you said i'm not scared of asking or trying things out, my Treo 650 I've dont a hell a lot to it, and it still runs good, but the HTC is it's replacement.
Cheers,
Paul

Well i my self have a herald or atlas >>or normal people call it the t-mobile wing so i wouldnt know exactly which one is the best
for that model but i have done alot od flashing and u always need to just post a question to the senoir members they know alot of the info and work arounds.....I promise they will make a difference ..send them private message its faster..and if ur phone is a
touch then go to the forums that show the names >>> Vogue or the Elf just look at them to see whihc one looks like urs...speak or ask the question for better programming speed to on of the senoir members it should show if they are seniors under there names.
Will do, thanks again Perfection3.
Please pardon my ignorance. I have tried to work out what is going on here for the last couple of months, hoping that it would finally just click. could someone please explain to me what all these ROM's are. So I have an HTC touch diamond with the standard ROM (from the last update, i think 1.9xxxxxx cant remember). With all these 'ROM' developments what more do you get out of the phone. Do you guys still use the TouchFlo 3D? What is HARD-spl? Is it worth changing the ROM? There seems to be a lot of ROM's, how do i know which is the best 1 to use? I feel like i have so many more questions, but please could someone just outline what it is all about.
please excuse my ignorance. I have tried looking it up but i still dont understand so pardon me for taking shortcuts.
Thanks

i don't see how pointing him ti the wiki will answer any of his questions. that thing is as old as the diamond itself.
ROMs are the data image on your phone. the read only memory that includes sys, xip, wm6.1 and tf3d plus all the component packages in a ppc. all the ones floating around here are tweaked and updated by people to work the way they want them to, with suggestions by the testers.
they are all basically the same.
they are based on official htc releases and updated to the latest operating bits from other devices, then shared with us.
its up to you to find what works best on your device in your locale and for your specific needs. you don't have to read entire threads, just the last few pages or from the date that the latest one was released by that cook.
hard spl is a phone condom to keep people from bricking their phone. it is required and very important. i suggest developers edition so you can flash any rom you want.
and yes, flashing a cooked rom is very worth it, but i warn you, once you start you can't stop.
i can't tell you which is the best, i do know what are my favorites, but the journey you will take finding that perfect rom is very rewarding.

pretty much all apps for ppc can be found in .cab form. this is for easy installation and removal. if you choose a full rom you will get all stock htc apps, but a lite rom is bare bones. keep your collection of cabs on your internal storage for quick re-installation after flashing. also keep a backup of your cabs on your pc.

ya i can relate to that. Im also quite a forum junkie and I cant stand it when people direct me to search engines. Even on my local PS3 forum people always help out. Thanks to all for your help. Much appreciated.
So if I want to flash a ROM on my phone I just have to sift through the 1's here that are available. Do you guys recommend any? ie. one's that have few problems.
Typically the rom you get with the phone is a generic one, not too fast, full of feature and there to please everybody.
A cooked rom normally strips things down or tunes the device to a specific need. some roms remove as much as they can to give you more ram. Great for those of us who browse the web.
Others load them with more features so you never want for anything.
Others are generic but more upto date. The problem with official roms is they are updated and then go into testing for months and months then get released.
a custom rom will take updated drivers from other devices (like the HD) and place them into our roms with around a weeks testing or less. so we get them sooner. This does have its drawbacks.
A custom rom can be less stable than an official one. but you can get lucky. Duttys 3.6b is a good mix. Its faster than the stock rom, has more features but more memory as the rubbish is removed.
In the past 2 days I have learnt how to cook my own rom, which is the dream situation. I get rid of everything I dont want like Cyberon, transcriber, ringtones and other stuff. SO I have loads of storage free but also add in the software I use the most.
I now have the fastest rom I have ever used and its perfect beacause its tailor made by me, for me. Its really not that hard.

OK, I am new here and have done a lot of reading. Apparently me and about 3 other guys are the only ones that have USCC, not a lot out there for us. NFSFAN, you have mentioned that you might be able to whip us up something if there were more, that would be great. I do have a number of specific questions and I'd love all the great input that everyone has.
1. 6.5 or Android? (yes I know it is all personal taste)
2. My touch does not have GPS enabled from USCC. If I unlock the phone do I use .41 or 2.31? Yes I want GPS and would find a ROM with it and is that why I would choose one or the other?
3. My Radio is 3.42.30, do I need to upgrade to 3.42.50 for GPS or just to upgrade to 6.5? and where do I find that radio?
4. Am I asking to basic of questions yet?
5. How do I get Adobe Flash Player loaded/upgraded?
6. Is there a good .cab website out there for games/apps?
7. Can I have my cake and eat it too?
Nah j/k but I know my phone is capable of so much more than I am using it for now and want to take advantage of it. I really appreciate all the help and suggestions.
Thanks

Yes it is a personal choice, nice thing about Android is that it is a Linux shell - rebooting the phone brings you back to WinMO so really it can be best of both worlds just be prepared for some work in using Android and remembering steps before starting it like, Starting IE/Opera before starting Android to make sure you have Internet within Android (at least when I was using it a few months back)

Of course you can, but the actual saying is "can I eat my cake and have it too" in reference to the days of Marie Antoinette and the famous line of "let them eat cake" the idea is to be able to eat your cake AND have it, which of course would be impossible as would the situation a person in reference to the saying would be wanting as well
Hope that helps

Thanks Doug I had almost given up hope on this thread. I have been on PPC Geeks and am just about to take the plunge. Thanks for all the advice and I see the logic in the actual "eat / have it" order, very interesting and educational. Thanks again and I will try to update after I upgrade.
spittinfly, in your reading have you found the settings you need with QPST to make your GPS work with USCellular? Also, the instructions that get you into the diagnostic mode with other carriers do not work with USCellular. I had to do a lot of reading myself, and piece together information from several different threads to make it work. With the same radio you have I can lock in from 6 to 11 satellites. If you have found all this information I won't bother typing it all in, but if you need it let me know.
Personally, I've tried a couple of different ROMs, but I'm currently just running the USCellular WM6.1 with SPB Mobile Shell 2.1.5, while I'm anxiously awaiting Shell 3.
Well I am not familiar w/ SPB but I did go on ppcgeeks and searching for "uscc 6900" found what appears to be a good option for me. Would someone mind checking it out?

If it is regarding NFSFAN and the ROM he has to offer, then yes I would suggest trying it, its the ROM I use on my HTC Vogue (Touch) and its been stable, fast and reliable

Is there a way to "turn on" the GPS (unlocker first, I understand this) WITHOUT changing the ROM?
I very much enjoy my current setup with ONE exception: no GPS.
I've read a little about QPST and have tried a version of it (its been quite a while) but it doesn't seem to recognize my 6900...
so... basically... 2 questions: 1. can I turn on GPS using only a settings change in QPST, and if so, 2. what version of QPST do I need to do so?
FYI, USCC 6900 6.1 Radio 3.42.30 ROM 3.01.573.4

Do I need to flash my phone or is it just like a .cab file that I install on my phone? What stuff do you guys recommend I get to just get me started on making a cool home screen? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Again

All the 6.5roms have Chome. and they are very customizable. You will need to flash your phone if you want the full package. Check the sticky and make sure you do an application lock prior to flashing.. I personally recommend ookba's 3vo rom and edit everything with Roloracer's titanium filechanger. I also recommend you search this forum for the icon and background thread for some cool backgrounds for your phone. image size for backgrounds are 320x240
RE:
Hey I looked and searched around for the ookba 3vo rom and had no luck. Is It just a rom that flashes me to windows 6.5? Can the dash have windows 6.5 on it? are there any other things or steps I need to Do before flashing the phone? Do I need a program to flash the phone or is it just like a ROM you would download from T-mobile, hook up the phone with usb, an let the install do the rest? Please help. Thanks man.
Tim
you dont have to look very far, the rom is 3rd from the top of the list!

Very true. 3volution series rom's are the biggest thing since sliced bread here in the dash world. Let me answer a few questions for the thread starter.
Is It just a rom that flashes me to windows 6.5? Can the dash have windows 6.5 on it?

It is the rom itself that will flash you to WM6.5 using the fore mentioned thread will directly link you to ookba's 3vo rom for the dash. Additionally check the Sticky out. (the very first post) it has a list of everything im linking you too.

You don't really need a "program" everything will come in the files downloaded from the 3vo rom thread. The one thing you will need to do is download and install an SDA application unlock found here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=355789
After that's done check out this thread on flashing for the Dash, its a little outdated but everything is the same. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=415225
