Hi,
I've got my diamond flashed to 3.4 duttys. It's really good but I do have a few problems with it. Sometimes when you hold the hang up key to lock it it simply scrolls through the touch flo screens. I was thinking I might upgrade to 3.6 and see if that ironed out the problems. Only thing is I've got a few apps on there that i'd prefer not to lose and reinstall at the moment. Is there a way to back up all apps before flashing? I don't think PIM does it? From what I can see it's just contacts etc.
Thanks for any help
supposedly spb backup will restore installed applications, databases and file (rom upgrade mode).
Please note: I have not tried this application, nor am I affiliated. I have no experience at all..I googled and found the product. So if it doesn't work, don't be mad at me

SPB definitely works. I would suggest unticking the "overwrite" box when selecting ROM upgrade mode.
TBH I'd personally say just get used to it, until you find the perfect rom you are likely to change again.
Keep all the .cab's .exe's etc in a folder on the internal storage and reinstall the ones you want, it's a good way to keep the device tidy, and I think you'll probably find that you'll have to reinstall quite a few programs as you might find they keep their data spread around the filesystem.

Hi,
First of all: Happy New Year!
Over the last couple of days I have updated my Qutie 9000 for the x-th time, but now I am finally happy with the whole thing.
Installed all my tools and applied all skins and tweaks etc. Now I want to make a backup of the entire thing (OS, apps, registry etc.). So I can re-apply this backup after a crash or when I have gone to far in customising my Qutie... believe me... it happens..
Is it possible to make such a backup that you can re-apply? If not, what would be the best approach to take?
Thanks in advance.

use spb backup... it will be optimum for your needs... and you can keep the backed up file on your storage card... so if your uni ever crashes, all you ot to do is to run the backup file....it also supports sequential backing up

Quite a good program indeed. But, does it actually copy everything?
I did the mistake of backing up AKU2 and restore on AKU3.5. Crashed everything. Even if I only choose specific things.
But, nuff said. Good program, if you use it wisely.
Basically is should be a safe options is to restore (if needed) on the same OS version?
So I would only have to restore the ROM and then restore the backup?
I mean... I have a lot of tweaks and use skins on all my apps... will the registry and the applications be restored as they are now?
Thanks.

Thanks... really helpful stuff!
Not to be used after an upgrade

yes... you can not use it after upgrade.... for that matter when i upgraded from 3.3 to aku 3.5 and then used it to restore... the system showed aku 3.3 again.... but works great otherwise... have been using it for more thn a yr now
Sprite can restore after a ROM upgrade, SPB cant, provided you follow the instructions in the Sprite FAQ step by step, everything can be restored to the new ROM apart from pop accounts
Sprite it is...
I decided to use Sprite. Works like a charm. Thanks for all your help/advice.

Hi all,
I have flashed my Universal several times so far, and every time I did so, I have lost some of my data or had problems with backing them up and restoring them again. What I lost were, for example, all the calendar events and tasks, because AS recognized my phone as a new one and didn't let me restore backup from the "old" one. I managed to successfully backup my SMSes, but when I restored them, each of them was restored twice, and as I never delete messages I send and receive, deleting all the duplicates one by one would take about two eternities. Oh and of course I had to reinstall all my apps and games and lost all the topscores I spent ages making.
Anyway, what I want to say is that while backing up all the data could make problems to an ordinary user, I'm sure that there are some gurus that handle this with no problems, so..could any of them possibly write a tutorial on backing up all the data from important contacts to not-so-importnant-but-still-desired game scores? I know that what I'm asking for is pretty comprehensive and would take some time, but I'm sure that many users would benefit from such article. Thanks in advance to anyone who reads this and decides to reply or help

As a TOTALLY new user this month - I was surprised to find that I can't back up my total configuration to SD card (like I could with my old HP IPAQ)
Does this mean I have to re-install applications from a PC and re-sync from a PC each time the XDA EXEC 'hard resets' ?? (quite often at the moment)
Or has someone got a 'Back up to SD' tool that can restore after a 'Hard reset' ??
OK - I Just found SPB and Sprite - which one for a Novice ??
On a related subject , how can I transfer calendar and contacts from my IPAQ ?

Could someone please post a working CAB file for Sprite backup for WM5 trial? Thanx a lot, Longlife

Um theres no trial version.. What kind of device to you have? You most likely got the PPC version when ur device is actually an SP (smartphone) or vice versa

I have no idea what I downloaded then I tried to backtrack the site I got it from so I could read the decription again, but I didn't find it. Anyway, it was saying that it's for WM5 and as I have HTC Universal running WM5, I thought that is should work. Now, I got SKTools though, which are free and seem pretty cool (I just hope I will be able to restore the backup I made, once i need it )
Can I just point out something, if you use a backup utility, you should only restore that backup to the same ROM build you backed up from.
Otherwise, nearly all of the optimisations in the registry, and included application shortcuts will be lost if you decide to flash a new ROM and restore your backup.
You will be wasting your time reflashing if this is what you're doing.

Umm, sorry if this question is stupid, but what should I use to backup my data when flashing a new ROM then? The idea of getting a new ROM BUT losing all my data doesn't sound very good to me. Thanks,

I've been using SPB Backup sucessfully for some time and its been an essential for someone who like to play around with the system as much as I do. I've been trying to find a piece of backup software that will work to produce a full backup with 6.1 as SPBs doent seem to fully work, even with the help of PIMbackup.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Have you tried sprite backup?
I think that spb backup is the best... but i must affirm that sprite backup offerts more options than spb software (you can restore your data after a rom update)

How can you do that and different roms have different settings, doesn't that effect current rom functionality
I tend to find if you restore a backup with spb backup using different roms but same wm06.1 versions what tends to happen is that you end up with the rom that was backed up... BUT because there may have been different apps cooked in you find errors cropping up with soft resets needed a lot and sometimes major lockups that require hard resets.. And thats my 2 cents... cheers
Same release only

This is the same with sprite backup also.
So, if you want a new rom then only backup contacts and messages as there is no point to backup complete OS... Everything needs to be reinstalled anyway. these programs are just in case of events that require hard resets, no good to backup apps or anything...

I've you restore after a hard reset or a rom upgrade? what app have you used spb or sprite???
with spb if you do a hard reset you can restore all apps you installed and their settings, before your hard reset (but i've tested only with the same rom).
I use SPB Backup. I was saying that the full os backup is only good for HARD RESETS as it puts the complete os, registry settings and apps onto your hermes. If you reflash your os then restore your backup it overwrites the NEW os with the OLD os, however, because the new os probably doesn't have all the apps that the old os had cooked into it you get errors as the os cant find things it requires. Hope that cleared it up instead of smearing everything with mud....
UC roms

Its also make you have issue with the new now like freezing up and etc. Its just not worth the headache. Look in UC roms it is very little work to reinstall your app. Do a search for UC roms and read up on it. I'm tell is sweet I just did it for the first time it works like a charm.
What is the easiest way to get all of my settings contacts and e-mail settings back on my phone after I do a Rom upgrade?
use a backup utility before you re flash
Will a back up remember all the programs and contacts and mail settings?
I'm by no means an expert, but it was my impression that it was not a good idea to restore a backup onto a new rom. Things are not necesarily in the same place and it can cause problems. That being said i don't really know of any solutions for you.
Haven't tried it yet, but the new Spb Backup v2.0 will restore data between upgrades, don't know about each setting though. On the other hand, if it saves all registry settings and certain files (i.e. ".ini") then everything should be the same.
if you're installing another ROM, you'll do best by reinstalling all your programs. this will ensure that the programs work with the newly installed ROM. i use MS Outlook to backup contacts... backing up email settings depends on what you use for email; if you're using a POP3 account, i suggest you reenter them.... in my opinion, using backup software to reinstall your programs, settings, etc., is risky and may cause unexpected issues. good luck!

Spb Backup has been incredibly buggy for me on my Telus Touch... does it work well for anyone else?
It freezes unless I do this: back up my documents only, turn off the option to create an exe and don't use encryption.

so,on the telus touch, have you tried the rom upgrade and used spb backup to restore?

Not dumb, there are always questions when you install new software. But, this is another great feature of Spb Backup, it creates self-extracting restore files, with an option to create a copy of the software as well. So install it to your main memory, and have the files kept on your card. Whenever you need to restore, just run the file, you don't even need the app installed. Also includes a desktop sync app.
Rom update
Thanks for the speedy reply,I'm just looking now for any issues doing Rom update with vista 64(Telus tech said there should be no problem, but I've yet to get the same response twice from them)Ok i hope this new update is worth the sweat!

No prob, almost forgot to mention, after restoring the data, your PC will recognize it as it did before. I really like this feature, thought all my data was going to be duplicated.
Hi,
I have a stock TP2 and am keen to upgrade to the HTD 6.5 upgrade ROM. What's putting me off is having to rebuild my device. My PIM data isn't a problem as I sync with my work Exchange server, and even reinstalling apps isn't daunting (although quite tedious).
What puts me off is the application data. I have a lot of apps that I've spent a lot of time over a number of months configuring and setting up for my needs. I don't want to have to go through and do all that again.
Maybe I'm missing something, but is there a way for me to restore application data in one go without doing it manually? I'm guessing that doing a complete restore from my SPB Backup files won't work as they will attempt to reinstall the old WM6.1 files?
Some friendly help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Pete

THe best way to get it done cleanly with some customizing in Sashimi, but it does have a decent learning curve. Check out the videos here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nqeiv3en2Kg

Thanks rvt1000
I'd never heard of this app, I'm learning about it now. Unfortunately, it doesn't help me out of my predicament, which is how do I preserve my app data when I upgrade to 6.5, or do I have to take a hit now but rebuild with Sashimi so I don't have to repeat the process?
I assume that Sashimi resolves my issues of restoring all the associated databases of each my apps?

you can use sashimi now to backup your apps and such then upgrade, then run it to put everything back in place. that should be fine but you've got a bit of reading to do to figure the thing out, which I'm still working on myself!
