Ok, so when I flash and reflash my phone over and over to test these sweet new ROMs, I am contstantly having to restore data and reconfigure customization settings. Especially custom ring tones assigned to contacts, custom ring tones for messages, system alerts, and ring tone. Any way to back these up for easy restore??
I sync my contacts over the air with my Exchange Server so contact pictures come back just fine but ring tones and other phone proprietary data doesn't.
Whats the best way to do this?
I second This post.
I am in the same boat with this guy.
I'm trying to test out all the ROMS and see which one i like the most.
BUT I hate having to restore my contacts and tasks and all that STUFF!
or say I keep getting that "memory is low" problem with NRG ROSE (remade ricky and stylez) and I want to reflash it.
Whats the BEST WAY to back up all my data so I can reflash my Dash?

Sprite backup, you can select what you want and what you dont want, it wraps everything up into a neat little .exe file that you run to restore all you want.
Another one is SPB Backup it comes down to personal preference.
"Would advise making a backup of a total clean flash and a hard-reset if you are using Rose ROM, then do pereodic backups"
Check out DASHWIRE, its free and I use it to back up my contacts since outlook is a POS. It backs up OTA from the phone so you dont need to be around a computer when you use it. You can also back up other things too like pics, bookmarks, etc. It works great!

Yeah dashwire is pretty awesome, i'm a little anal though so i use it and sprite backup lol, but you said the magic word, free!
I find Dashwire to take forever to sync up. Someone just mentioned fexilis....gonna try that out.
back up
Sprite backup is the one for me just love it.
flash new ron set up every thing the way you want it back it up to memory card job done.
need to reset phone or flash it. then just run your backup and all is back as before.
I install a new app run and test and if all is ok then i make a new back up keeping the old one on my computer just in case i need to re-install.
I think its great.
You know what I'd like to see? A tool for exporting registry settings to an SD card or computer so that you could import them back into your phone after re-ROM'g it. I'm thinking specifically T-Mo settings, but I'm sure there are others. A way to export My Faves info, including icons, ringtones, etc., that could then be imported into Ricky's My Five program, for instance.

It's called Resco Registry Explorer, export the reg's need then copy to computer or wherever set up ROM inport reg
I tend to .cab up the reg's i use after every flash so can blat them all on very quickly then just soft-reset.

I use SKTools for that. Makes a fast back up then restore when needed. You can pick every reg entry or just specific ones.

you can also use www.microsoft.com/myphone, with it you can save online your contacts, sms, pics, vids, and calendar online, and if you change your phone you can easily take it on it without problems, i try it, i test it, and off course i approve it. enjoy
I think MyPhone is too much messed.... Too bad it, but PPCPimBackup is plainer and easier.... and after all it takes only few Kb of memory........

my phone is not messed, it's like ms active sync, except you just take it on your phone and you can use it online, no special action to do with.
Hello,
I have a T-Mobile Dash and I need to find a way to transfer the text messages from it to my pc. Is there an open source program out there that I could use to do that with? My guess is that there are about 500-600 text messages that I need to save.

You could also use PIM Backup v2.8 is made for PPC's so bit fiddly on SP but does the job all the same, can save to storage card & copy to PC.
or try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3587961#post3587961
Not exactly what you're looking for, but I don't know the reason for wanting to do this, so I thought I'd point out another alternative. Take a look at Microsofts "My Phone"... it'll syncronize your entire phone (including text messages) to the cloud. If you're doing this just for backup and restore purposes, it's easy to use. Took me a little bit to get my beta account though.

Thanks all for your tips. I ended up trying PIM Backup and it worked but the formatting of the text messages came out so scattered when I viewed them in Open Office Excel that I am unable to find a formatting that will keep the dates legible. I tried different file conversion attributes and even tried converting the file to a .pdf but with no luck. I guess its enough that the program actually backed up everything but I would really like to have some way to verify that all the data can be successfully restored after I cold reset my Dash since I have been trying for some time with T-Mobiles tech support to find a way to get my picture text messaging functioning again but they are telling me that the only way to get that to happen is to cold reset the phone and that will kill all of my contacts and text messages so I need to make sure that all of that data is actually saved and restorable before I go ahead and try. I also wanted to have a copy of all of my data should the hard drive on the phone fail at some time. Any suggestions for how to verify that the data can actually be restored?

Oh wow, this looks really interesting. I am going to give this a try too and report back. Thanks.
Just a personal opinion, but unless the texts are hilarious jokes or a guide to a hidden treasure, I don't see why anyone would have to save 500-600 texts!

PM me if you like the trial... hint hint hint
All,
After replacing a TP2 with a not-so-good button, I had the joy of re-doing all my contacts. Even though I had the contacts backed up in multiple forms (myphone, sim card copies, etc), I still had to re-enter all the ringtones and facebook account connections. No fun!
How can I make a safe backup copy of ALL the contact data? Not just the least-common-denominator data that all phones share, but ALL the data including TP2-specific items like FB links and ringtones?
Thanx,
/Mark
Try Pim Backup.
No joy, PIM backup does not include the Facebook link.
To recap, I am trying to find a COMPLETE backup tool, which can backup Contacts, including Ringtones and Facebook links.
HTC people, is there anything for this? Please let me know what I can do. Otherwise, I'll be very unlikely to take advantage of hotfixes (which I understand must wipe the device).
Thanx,
/Mark

People might start thinking I am working for Google, but I am not. If you use Gmail, you can sync with Gmail using Exchange and the photos are synced back and forth, which means that they keep their facebook pictures or any other picture used.

I don't work for Google, but I may apply...
i dont know of any app that saves the facebook link in contacts, but what i've done is renamed all my contacts to how their names are spelled on facebook and it took care of the issue for me.

Yea, this is the easiest way to do it, but you don't need the full name. Just the first name or the first part of their name. It will list the closest match and you just go through each one and select them.
BTW, the Gmail thing saves the pictures only, not the link. Still, I was thinking that was a pretty cool thing because it also reflects that in Gmail apps.
I'm going to start flashing my phone whenever any new NRG ROM's come out, but I don't know how to back-up all the data on my phone so I don't have to start all over again.
What programs are best to use? And how do I use them?
Cheers.
define data.
contacts, notes, tasks, calendar?
try outlook. or myphone.
though. there are others.
names escape my mind though.
ya men, plenty out there. depends on what your needs are.
some just care about messages, some wants to have all back.
maybe configuration of apps.
-
I am using an small easy script I wrote in mscr, you can give it a try.
no good for messages but doing all the rest.
it works the way that ONCE you have to copy files holding configuration to SD card to dedicated folder, then it's doing it itself on scheduled time.
once you reflash rom, it will restore them all back. registry as well.
just back up your contacts to your sim and use Microsoft My Phone. Backs up all the basics, simply, quietly and not a problem to restore the info. It even holds your douments too. Should already be on your phone (the best part). I now never hesitate to hard reset if I want to do something
Cheers guys.
But stuff I'd like to save are the likes of all the settings. All my contacts etc. are all on my account on Microsoft's exchange server, it's just all the individual settings which i wish i could keep instead of flashing then spending half an hour doing them all over again!

that's what this script is doing, if you are familiar with creating reg files. and you are able to point out files responsible for settings in whichever app, give it a try. it's launging somewhere around on xda-dev, but i would update it if you like.
e.g. skype:
you copy application data\skype to SD\backup\application data\skype
and it will every 2 weeks copy them, again and again. It's done in background and very slowly, not slowing other processes, you can't notice. then there is simple restore which through config.txt herds them back.
for registry e.g facebook, create facebook.reg and put in SD\backup
just adding pim.vol will take care of contacts and calendar.
there is an option to add a file: "backup.all" which would mean that the whole folder is going there.
it's simple but what more I need?
hi guys

i am using PIMbackup:
http://www.dotfred.net/default.htm
it's simple, small, free and the guy who wrote it looks smart, he did the fdc task manager too, there is no concurrence in that one.
I've been using something payed and fancy and big before and it messed my messaging.
thank you very much i downloaded it and as soon as possible i'll try it.from the web site it seems very good!
I would like to merge text messages located on 4 devices:
1. WM5 phone
2. WM6.1 phone
3. Another WM6.1 phone
4. WM7 phone.
How do I do this?
I would like for all messages to be merged into one file, threaded and easily accessed for archive purposes. I didn't forward my WM5 messages to WM6.1 because that seemed unreliable when I researched it when I first got the WM6.1phone and searching now still gives various processes and I don't know if any will work moving forward to WM7. I would prefer not to send everything to a Gmail account and have my data mined...so...how do I do this?
I don't have the WM7 phone yet, but will. And, I have 20,000+ messages... I know some messages I have are duplicates (on the WM6.1 phones) so would like for the process/software to check for duplicates.
I doubt I would want to load the whole file on my WM7 phone as I am sure it would slow things down incredibly, however, an option to do that if I need to would be nice (or on a WM6.1 phone). I am looking for something to be able to access them all on a PC at least.
Thanks for considering this!
G.
For your SMS messages on your WM devices, you can use this software to perform successive backups and restores from your older devices to your current 6.1 device: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299705. Start with the older one, backup then restore/merge to the next one, backup then restore/merge to the final 6.1 device. I would advise doing a separate backup on all devices just to be safe. Make sure you select the option to merge or add rather than delete messages on the device when restoring. Instructions are on the authors site: http://www.dotfred.net/default.htm
On WP7 however there is no way to backup or restore SMS at this time, dont think there is even a way to sync to an exchange server so accessing your older texts on your WP7 device will have to wait until a solution of some sort is found.
Thanks efjay! I saw that post but was concerned that it was a little buggy and didn't allow for editing on a PC. Also, does it check for duplicate texts--couldn't find it on the author's page nor a search of the original post? I do see it creates duplicate contacts and appointments which isn't encouraging. Of course I can use any of a number of programs for editing on my PC once I get them all in one place but would like to ask the community's help first and not waste time. Have you done what I am trying to do?
Thanks again!
G.
I dont know if it checks for duplicate texts, and the backups I've done have been with emails. Maybe exporting to a text file will make it easier to remove the duplicates.
However here is something else you could try. Download a trial for Resco Backup, which includes a desktop tool to view the backup sets, you may find it useful. I had to use this to restore some emails from my WM device some time back when they got deleted from the server. See how that goes.
