As the title says, can I change rom with ubuntu or do I have to use Windows???

wiki will do the trick:

I think that wine will not work, maybe you can try Virtualbox + installation of Windows like a host operating system inside.
In Virtualbox you will allow USB for Win and you can install new ROM like a charm...

or you might use this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=399762
worked with my diamond without problems.

Is not a problem, you try with like up and copy rom.nbh to internal storage with usb drive disk !

Upgrading ROM on Vista

Hey All,
If your having problems with vista use a virtual machine like vmware workstation and install a copy of xp. It saves having to dual boot or borrow a mates pc. There is a trial version for download and a beta. Anyone else thought of this?
Don't use microsoft virtual pc 2007 as it doesn't have usb support.
Good idea.... have you actually tried a full install off a virtual XP and does it work ok?
Yes i have i had some problems. Eventually i had to use the vm player so i could tell when the usb was connected. but once i figured that out. I don't have any problems.
I upgraded with wm6 2.02 rom. However i can't upgrade the radio from 1.09 to 1.15 but i don't think that is related to this issue.
Good thinking,
But I think it is risky, as virtual machines are usually unstable and doesn't have all the system resources controlled.

Ubuntu ActiveSync

Hi! I figured out how to file transfer to the phone through ubuntu .BUt, Is there anyway to flash the t-dash with ubuntu? I'm just wondering. Is there a linux version of ActiveSync? I tried searching google and I had no luck.

Hey. How did you manage to do that? got an HTC tytn and been struggling long. I got ubuntu 9
when you say ubuntu 9, i assume you mean 9.04?
what i believe you want to use is a program called wm5torage i believe. it has just come with all the roms i have been using so i'm not sure where to find it. it sets up your phone as a flash drive with your sd card.
as far as active sync, there is a project that would provide some of the activesync functionality. but it doesn't allow for flashing
as far as i know you still have to use windoze for that.
Hi all,
i benefit from this post to report the excellent Syncmate !
It work very fine on mac (i use hackintosh).
I have tested that it works perfectly with the 3VO ROM, surely even faster than activesync on windows! Icredible!!
http://mac.eltima.com/sync-mac.html
syncmate for free can syncronize only i-calc and contact and ,obviously, it can mount excalibur as external disc,. Sync mate pro have full options!
CIao!

[Q] Connection to Mac (Windows before) ?

Hey guys,
im using my smartphone normally on windows 7 at home.
I need to plug it here at work into the mac to get some files copied.
I remember when doing this kinda stuff there are problems with

Or can i just plug it into the mac and it will work ?
Dont wanna lose my data or get any problems!

The sd memory of the phone is fat32 and macs are able to read and write to fat32. Ive got a mac and use it with my phone very often.
When u connect it via usb, select disk storage on ur phone and it should seem like a usb stick on ur mac.

Any clues, any one?
That´s a bit tricky. It depends what you are going to do and on what S3 Rom you are at the moment.
For KitKat Rom there are 2 USB Modi for the S3.
USB Storage : Direct connection to the SD card. Windows needs no driver.
MTP : Connection to internal S3 RAM and SD card. Windows needs driver. Look in optional drivers in Windows update for AyunOS driver.
This 2 modi can be chosed, when you connect the S3 viy USB wire.
For Lollipop ROM the USB Storage mode isn´t working right now.
For MTP you should find a driver in Windows update too, but i don´t use Win10.
Last but not least driver for SP Flashtool. SPF needs a special driver (VCOM-Driver). More tricky to install, but you can find information
and how-to on google and youtube.

Thanks for replying! I have the stock OS, KitKat, so it seems like I should be able to connect - I think there must be a problem with my laptop in that case, I will have a look in device manager and event viewer and see if I can figure out what's happening.
Out of interest, what is the status of Lollipop on the S3?
Thanks!

Do you hear the windows sound when connecting the S3? If not try a different USB port on the laptop.
There are 3 official Lollipop ROM right now. All 3 are good, with minor bugs. LL5.1 NewUI is for the chinese,
so a lot of chinese crap with it. I´m on Xtreme from TF right now for 3 days and pretty happy with it.
For more information read the last 20 pages of the monster thread above.
Ok, yes, I get the sound. Trying a different port does yield a slightly different result - if I connect in USB storage mode I see a new drive in Windows Explorer ("Removable Disk (E"), but if I try to open it Windows tells me to insert a disk. In MTP mode I see 'S3' in Explorer, and if I open that I see the phone memory and the SD card. This seems mostly ok, although it can get really slow.

Ok, MTP is working good. If it´s slow, then your SD is slow.
For USB Storage : What file system do you have on the SD?
I don't actually know, is there an easy way to find out?

Jap, either you use an external partition manager or from windows "disk management".
Also you can left click the drive, right click -> properties -> also shows the type of partition.
If you don´t see a partition type under windows, chances are its a linux/android one.
Check it with Linux or download the app "aparted" from playstore, so you can check it
with the smartphone.

This link gives all the details.
Hope it helps
I have uploaded a PDF file of the same at: http://d-h.st/tBcO
Generally the Kali Linux Installation is easy. The most common error a user gets in the network section, this is because in laptops and desktops there are different WiFi adapter and use a direct LAN wire.
The second problem is, users can't make the right partitions and gets errors. So my suggestion is to always use a seperate Hard drive for Kali Linux installation and do not go manual. Select the "Guided- use entire disk" option and then select the "all files in one partition" option, it will automatically create the right ext and swap the partition for you.
If you want to install a new HDD or SSD on your PC or Laptop and don't know how to install the hard drive, you can check this article on how to install Kali Linux without loosing Windows 10 and old data. I found this useful because it has multiple options.
