SKYFIRE: Forget Opera and IE - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

Recently i was searching for a "usable" Browser for my Hermes.
I was tired of NOT being able to view webpages with flash and no crashes at all.
I googled a lot and visited opera's website with excitement about version 9.5 beta http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/..... until i found out it was officially buggy and cames with no flash and probably "out of Memory" messages because of Hermes Rom.
Then i visited netfront website http://www.access-company.com/products/mobile_solutions/netfrontmobile/browser/index.html, but again.... disappointed.
After 15 minutes looking around i read a name which i wasnt familiar with. SKYFIRE. (Saffari and Firefox deja vu?).
It says that comes with full flash support and a desktop browsing experience in your mobile. Sounds too good to be true i thought.
But it WAS true!!!
Skyfire is everything i've always wanted in my Hermes. Full flash support, Zoom, Bookmarks, Terribly fast.
How to get it.
In Skyfire webpage http://www.skyfire.com/product you have to Sign Up with your USA mobile number and your email address in order to download. (HINT: Enter your real email address and if you are not a USA citizen (like me, i'm from CHILE) enter ANY mobile number, the number you enter here will be your password). In 30 seconds you will receive an email giving you the download link, thats it!!.
Try it, you wont regret.
I think this app should be cooked in future ROMS. Im using ROM 3.62.502.19 (Manila2D) HERMES http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=437571 and works like a charm.

thank you for the info but you could post here for those who don't want to submit a false mobile number, right? http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=123797&stc=1&d=1224625522

Thanks for your input farres, but signing in skyfire website is necessary. As i said in my post "the number you enter here will be your password".
So you need that number to sign into skyfire once its installed on your Mobile.

Sounds interesting...the only issue I have with IE is the memory usage of around 12MB. About How much memory does Skyfire use?

No Prob farres.

I love it.

I prefer this demo http://www.skyfire.com/product/demo

you do of course realize that Skyfire is almost as bad as Chrome in terms of tracking.
You don't actually web browse on the phone but via their servers and they send a compressed subset down to the phone plus you are doing it with signed account.
Yeah sure they are free just for the sake of it
At least with Opera 9.5 it's running locally
I am not suggesting you be paranoid but just realize why it's so fast and what the gotchas are with that.

I already assumed that
So it's equal to the technique Opera brought to us with Opera mini...

Yep, I am all aware of the technology behind it. You only use it for certain things just like how you use your ROM.
I have skyfire, opera 8.5 and PIE on my phone, ...

why should we be paranoid about such thing? as long as we dont live in one of these countries where internet is all restricted and you could be shot in the head just for saying the word freedom, I think it's a quite good browser for a pda. read newspapers, blogs, facebook... these are good things. however i wouldn't use it for purchases... like putting in credit card details or real private data.
far from being paranoid but it got me wondering how they would make profit.

Skyfire looked sweet as hell, I got it a while back in the first beta and it would devour my fully charged battery in about 30 mins and the phone would get hottt as hell. If they've fixed it I'd be willing to give it a shot again. Are you having any battery issues while running it?

Skyfire from outside USA
Is there any chance to sign up for skyfire if you are not living in the USA? I am not able to sign up for a new account from Austria. Thanks for help,

do some search, i think you can sign up with a 'fake' number from a white pages and give correct email, and download on to PC read around it is in the forums

Yes that is what I did, I already downloaded it and installed it, but can't log on to that account. Says it is not verified yet, so I guess I would have to send SMS from the number I created the account with.

Thanks a lot, that did the trick!! Downloaded my own version from the link they sent and now it works.

Hi!
I use the skyfire since some days. It is good, only you need to know, it's a beta! there are still so few errors which skyfire gradually be resolved. e.g. breaks with me after about 20 seconds of audio stream (at existing EDGE / 3G connection) from. wifi with no problems.
pages are sometimes not displayed, sometimes can not save favorites. These are just some errors that often occur with me. skyfire in the forum are more described.
Nevertheless, it is a great browser, if only because it is now possible, swf and flv streams to see.
Can you only wish so much fun!

Skype for Bada

I had heard of the mythical native Skype on the "3" UK branded version of the Wave.
But how about seeing it in action...

I'm not sure if it's a java app under the hood or a native version of Skype, but I've been after this for months.
The big question is, if we were to get our hands on the "3" UK firmware, do we have the skills or tools to extract the "AppEx" folder which would contain the Widgets and JAVA files, and possibly get to the OSP folder? Or would having the full firmware mean it would be easier to flash it, then extract everything.
Once we have the files, if it's an app we can spoof it, if it's a java file, we can install it.
What do people think? I think we can solve this and get this happening personally.
I guess this is doable.... But right now I am in the middle of my board exams and they will be ending on the 30th of March.... So I will be in the waiting side and watch someone else do it...
Preferrably, it would be easier and quicker if we were able to find someone who actually has a "3" UK Wave.
ok i am ready to do it but someone give me the firmware and a working trix
i can't understand trix every time i try to open it....it says file ***** is missing and no luck with it
The firmware is S8500NEJE6
If someone have a link to download, please tell us
lasentenza, where did you find this info? Am searching for it now.
If we're not able to find it, it should only cost 5 euros to download from Modaco.

Correct, the Youtube video link and pics came from badablog.ru. However here is where it gets interesting. The Skype.rar java app you have listed, which I have downloaded and installed myself is not the same "Skype" in the video or pictures. It looks no different than dozens of other java skype apps I've downloaded in the past. Watch the video again, or look at the pictures, and then install Skype.rar and you'll see what I'm referring to. In the pics, it appears to be a native bada version, or at least a new touch screen java app. In reality the app has the java menu at the bottom and none of the menu screens line it. Maybe it's a very early version of the 3 UK Skype, but I don't think so. It has a fancy filename "3UK_021-samsung-touch-no-fake-minimize-jsr211-480x800-i64x64.jar" but apart from that it's an old version of skype.
Sadly the java app inside of the Skype.rar file is not the "3" version of Skype we all want. So the search continues. If we can get the app, then we can go about removing the restriction of only being able to call other "3" phones.

You need to disable virtual keyboard and fit to screen to make it look like the one in the video.............
I wasn't able to find the same menus as what I saw in the video. Thanks for the tip on disabling the virtual keyboard, I didn't' know that was independent of an app. I always got it on old java apps, but new ones it wasn't present.

You get those menus after signing in.... which can only be done under '3' network.... In the starting you see that after the guy opens up skype it says signing in.... Thats cuz he has saved hi username and password in skype in his phone.... The program also gives us an option to save it..... But first we need to be able to login to save the username and password!!
you can't install it directly from the jad file either you will have to remove the certificate key from it or you will just install it from the jar file
after some digging in a vodafone branded firmware i found certification keys that the system use to make sure that it is installing a valid app
one of these keys was call vodafone.crt or something like
so i think it is security issue right now not a branding issue
So no ones interested to really do this??? I have checking by this page every 10 mins or so expectin a lot of development to be goin around.....
Well I'm not a programmer myself, but I do like to look inside files and try and see what makes them tick.
If this app signs into the "3" servers then we got out work cut out here. But if maybe we can find the login url or details, maybe we can change this to make it login to skype directly.
This is just the start though. It took long enough to get ahold of these files, so I'd be patient and see what happens from here on out.

And now that Samsung allowed VOIP officially from the 4th of march, no one is going to give a **** about this...

KINdroid(Vermine Droid Clone)

For those of you who have a psp you may know something about Portals. Offline web pages that give you the feel of using a different operating system. Well I've been working on making portals originally designed for the psp compatible with the KIN and then hosting them on a server due to KIN not being able to load web pages from it's flash storage.
I call the project I am currently working on KINdroid. It is based on the verminedroid PSP portal which is a PITA to work with because of the fact that it was programmed in french.
*UPDATE*
Recent changes include:
Fixed Maps link
Fixed calculator app
Added calendar link
Fixed weather link
Fixed duplicate backgrounds on some pages
Changed IM link to ebuddy

Give it a try yourself by going to http://173.89.0.47 on your KIN
Also try the windows phone 7 portal by going to http://173.89.0.47/win7phone/index.html
Use to have a psp, sold it for 50 bucks, modded xbox controller, and alot of other ****. And i had the same idea. All you need is a universal server with that on file so we can use it. Its not that hard. But hey, send me that vermin droid, i dont have it [email protected]

this is a pretty cool thing you've got going here. i'm not sure how useful it is right now, but it certainly has some potential.
it doesn't display quite right for me though. the background is tiled and everything is really small. i'd imagine it would be a relatively quick fix.
also i would suggest a back button, as the built in one is inconvenient as hell.
if anybody here knows javascript that might be a better option than html. loading each page is sort of inconvenient (especially on my awful internet).

Like any website, doesnt matter, and it's just html & javascript on the end.
You could do this anytime, but the real problem is always the same. You can't store it locally. If we could do local websites, then a pseudo app could work so well.
But storing it remotely.... not so much improved.

Removing the duplicate images is as easy as adding this code of css:
HTML:

Why do you need him to send you the files. It's a simple webpage. Can't you just save it through your browser?

Yes, it's a portal, but it's still an html file. It doesn't matter if he's hosting it on a local server. Just because you have to enter numbers in to access it, instead of a domain name doesn't make it any difference. It's just like any normal website.
In reality, the web could function without domain names. The thing is that no one wants to remember a string of numbers.

btw, for the up-and-above topic, i was reading a games site within a public WiFi site and the cache didn't work when exiting the WiFi range and pressing back, even after passing ~10 pages of comments.

Mozilla Firefox xD
If you use LastPass, you can make a master password and set sites to automagically log you in. This doesn't work on all sites, and some sites will fight LastPass over login protocols, so it's kind of a trial and error thing to get it to gel right with your online experience. Facebook for example works well. Bookmark the root site (Facebook.com) and set it to auto login. It just works. And it works in all the major browsers, even little ole Chrome.
I prefer Firefox... well, Pale Moon... well, Pale Moon Portable, haha. Same difference. Between Adblock Plus, NoScript, and Cookie Whitelist With Buttons (silly name, don't laugh, it does good) and a search box, Chrome just can't keep up. I've been fortunate enough to have avoided the memory leaks that Chrome users say made them switch, and Pale Moon is plenty fast enough for me. I could run Windows 2000 if all I cared about was speed. You start adding features, it slows down a hair, it's a fair trade.
Anyway, I've checked "Remember Me" when I log in, and it still likes to log me out after ~5 minutes of inactivity. Cookies are fine but I'm only accepting first-party cookies (i.e. from xda-developers.com while I'm here). NoScript is blocking a script from netshelter.net. It's allowing them from google-analytics.com, googleapis.com, and of course xda-developers.com.

Not available in all markets
The Skype Beta seems to be limited to certain markets. I cannot download it in Germany. Hopefully Microsoft is extending the Beta to more countries soon.
EDIT: The Zune Link is not working, but the web marketplace link (from Skype Blog) is working in Germany.
Strike_Eagle, thanx for the nice information.
Now I have one reason less to hate WP
ultrashot implemented RAPI (WMDC runs and gives full access to file system and registry from PC), you pointed on Skype...
Now - I miss only VPN .... and probably REPL....
and Hey!
heads up!
SDK 7.1.1 is live!

I put a note upthere, confirmed it work with IE only, haven't tried on Firefox and Opera.
Anyone who can't download properly, please look at post 1 for updated link for web version, please let me know if you still can't download.
This.. is great!
Finally Windows Phone has the Skype app..
Just wish I could use it properly with my HD7 (with a front camera)..
Oh well. good enough xD
It not support multitasking...
You are disconnected from Skype when you press home or back.
XAP for sideloaders.
Also I have a greek friend in my list and his name does not pop up in the contacts, but it does pop up when I click the plus to start a conversation...
But its a beta of course. Ow weird, I'm restarting the app now and the greek name shows up now, very strange haha. Never mind then.
I hope they can somehow use the ringtone when there would be an incoming skype call. This is what prevents tango from working correctly atm.
Unfortunately the design is not as nice as the mockups joe belfiore showed a year ago (!). But its better than nothing and I'm certainly happy with it, have been wanting this for long time
I can't download it, I get an error message saying I need a "newer version of Windows Phone". There is no update available for my device, HTC Mozart on Orange UK. Any ideas?
I put it onto my LG Optimus Quantum using Application Deployment and seems to be working great.

You can only download it directly on the phone. Zune on the Desktop only work for US users (because zune:// links don't support a locale parameter). It's not searchable in the marketplace either.
I recommend using the QR code in the official blog post.

Why not just get it from the marketplace? What's the point of side-loading it?
I would say people try it with IE. Yes, i mean Internet Explorer
I can't download in the UK.

i recommend try the Marketplace Link instead of the Zune Link.

Annoying commercials

Hi!
In the recent time, when I surf XDA-forum with my Xoom or Galaxy Nexus, I often am redirected to awful commercial-sites like this one ( http://cat.m.smartphonegirls.de/wwf...n_id=103566ff54dbd160ab06425f95bc91&path=SPOQ), who want to sale stupid things.
The only way to avoid it is to use a desktop UA-string.
Why does XDA support those kind of abo-services, we all know from the media? I have nothing against commercials on the forum, I know XDA needs the money. But not that way, please...

These shouldn't be appearing... Do you have any details about what's causing it to appear? Ie. a particular browser?
Just the stock android 4.0.3-browser, on my Xoom with Tiamat-ROM and on my Galaxy Nexus with CM9.
It only happens on XDA-dev-page, mostly when entering the UCP or a thread. And there are two sites I have seen. The one I posted and some other video-page. I don't remember that name, but will post if I see it again.
And it doesn't always happen, just from time to time.
I have this problem too. Follwing picture appears:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_share": "Share",

}
And in my browser cache is the smartphonegirls-thing!!

The same here. The worst thing is that these commercials are opening automatically. A soonish fix would be really appreciated.

Exactly what I meant! And there is another MobVid-Site I sometimes get.
I see you are German like me and those pages are in German. Could it be possible that only users in Germany get those "commercials"?

Yes, and if you accidentially would tap "Ja" (= yes in German) you would have to pay 2,99€ per week via your mobile bill, if you haven't blocked mobile payments on your contract (by default it's activated, you have to contact the provider).
Need to get rid of it...a.s.a.p

I sent this to the owners to get rid of it I will check how it's going
i get the same mobile ad Galaxy Nexus living in Germany too
I guess there are dynamic commercials, that adjust to the origin you belong to and for.Germans, who have a mobile UAstring, it redirects to.that site... Not very funny...
Just imagine you were showing the XDA-page to s.o. on your phone and then this page pops up. Some kind of embarassing
Same here.
It's really anoying.
Any suggestions for a workaround?
Blocking URLs or something?
I use Dolphin Browser.
Thanks in advance

We're trying to find out the cause of this... Is this over Wifi or 3G, and who is your provider?

Provider: O2
Could be both 3G and Wifi.

I don't know if it's with 3G, since most of the time I'm using WiFi (home, university etc.) so I just can only confirm it happens with WiFi. Anyway, it will most likely be with 3G, too - I simply don't remember that.
I also got that "ad" today ... That ad is not just emberrasing, but if you click it, it will cost you 3€/week and that's horrible!!!
3G (H), Provider: T-Mobile ...
Maybe the transaction_id can help find out more:
transaction_id=1030fff05c0bb9ea955d74de8061de&path=SPOQ
(Unfortunately I'm not allowed to post full links )
I'm getting this crap since today... I was surfing on my SGS2 on ign.com when that site was automatically loaded.
I think it's somehow connected to google admob or whatever... I'm also german, it must be connected to one of those
automated advertisments (geolocation) for germany...
It's automatically loading... I can't even check if I clicked on it by mistake because the first time when it appeared I was kinda surprised.

No, you didn't click something. It just takes until the entire site is loaded, then you are redirected. The worst thing about is that you cannot even go back to the page you wanted, because the browser seems to think it IS the page you wanted. If you go back, you.get the page you had before... Not funny...
And yes, I have also recognized it on other pages, but only very, very few, so I don't think it's Google Ads.
