Hi everyone... I am new to the PPC world... being just recently swatch from my Treo600 to a new XDA2s, I am having a little difficulty getting used to the Microsoft way of doing things in PPC2003... I am just wondering is there anyone who can help me or point me to the right direction where I can get some external program that can help me from going insane... here's my problem... I usually keep a huge contact list with all my customer, supplier, co-worker, family and friends contact all in my PDA... so the usual way for me to make a phone call is to search it from the contact list... but here's my problem, I travel alot with my job and depending on my current location, I have to edit the number in my contact before I dial the number... in my old palm, I can simply edit the number before I dial that number (there's a funtion on my palm that allows you to edit before call... so it allows me to edit the number without physically changing the number in my contact list)... I am just wondering can PPC do that? Or is there any program in PPC that will allow me to do that? As far as I can see... in PPC, as soon as I have search for a contact and then I click on his or her number with my stylist... it will automatically dial... I can not edit it before I dial... the only way I can edit it before I dial is to physically edit the contacts... which is very annoying as I sync my contacts with my exchange server, I don't wanna to have to have all my contact get mess up with different area code and dialling code from different country... anyone know how can I solve this problem? Thanks for your help in advance... I very much appriciate all of your advice in advance... Peter
I think the most straightforwards solution here is to store all of your numbers in the international dialling format; that way, wherever you are, your device will place the call correctly
For example - if I had a contact in Glasgow, UK, it would be stored as +44141xxxxxxx (+44 for UK, 141 for Glasgow and the remaining seven digits as the local number)
In my experience whenever I have been abroad, any calls to any of my stored numbers are placed correctly first time by either my SmartPhone or PPC.
If you're problem is regarding a slightly different issue then please expand on your problem by detailing what you mean by "modifying" your contact before you dial.
My problem is a little bit more complicated I think... I already has most number stored in the international dialing format... but my problem is that, depending on my location, I have to dial a certian set of numbers in front of the phone number to be dial in order for me to save on long distance and roaming... for example, while I am roaming in Mainland China if I want to dial home in Hong Kong with my mobile... normally, I will dial 0085226****88 but that will cost me like USD2 per minute... but if I dial with a prefix of 17909 (hence I will type in: 179090085226****88) then my per minute charge will now be something like USD0.10 per minute... which is a huge saving especially when I make roaming and long distance call all the time... the same thing in Hong Kong, if I dial 1666 before I dial long distance, I will get a much higher savings over regular long distance... my problem is that I can not possibly store all of these information for all the locations that I am going to be in, each places that I am going to be in, have a different sets of number... so is there any intellegent way to add additional numbers in front of the number stored in the contacts before it is being dialed in pocket pc? I know on my old palm... I can solve this problem in two ways... 1) I can set a certain dialing prefix before the system dial any number (normally I leave that blank, as I prefer edit before dial function)... I can use this prefix function but it will require me to change the prefix when I am at a different location but it is a workable solutions... is there something like that in PPC? 2) The second way to solve this was the edit before dialing function on the palm... I just click on the number, it allows me to edit the number temporary before it is automatically paste onto the phone software and before the phone dials it...
Anyway, I know this is very complicated and it is a very rare issues thats probably just affecting me or a very small number of users... but it will be great if there's some simple solutions to this... but I think this problem is mainly due to the lack of flexiblilty in the contact list rather then the function of the phone itself! :O) Anyway, thank you very much for your help and suggestions again... very much appriciate it :O) Peter

you got it all wrong
... if you ask me: your approach is wrong. Here are the basics. Windows XP, for instance and Outlook, that is the source of the contacts (and phone numbers and other details that are entered), stores phone numbers in this 'international' format:
country code (MS has a list of countries and codes of its own)
are code (another, separate field) and
number
If you respect the fields provided by Outlook then you get a number generated by Outlook that looks like this:
+381 (064) 6185250
THIS is the 'correct' international format recognised by Microsoft Phone Dialer (well not actually MS but Active Voice, but that is a completely different issue)
My point is that +448704364673 is NOT a correct international phormat, because MS cannot differentiate between the international country code and long distance (area code) and therefore the phone dialer cannot parse the numbers correctly.
NOW, how to get the system to know WHERE you are and should it use the area code when dialing or you are in the area your friend is, or you want to call a toll free number that is in 'another' area, or you are dialing a client abroad etc. Well, there is the 'Dialing Rules' settings! THERE you create a profile (home, office, abroad etc.) and provide the area code for the dialer to differentiate...
This is all well with the Windows XP/Outlook 2002+ I know well, BUT when it comes to PPC... sorry, I have the same problem...>
FACTS:
fact no. 1: Outlook separates phone numbers in groups of>
country code
long distance code (area code)
number
fact no. 2: phone numbers entered this way are stored in a format>
+381 (064) 6185250
fact no. 2: Microsoft Phone Dialer recognises this number and dials correctly
via a voice modem... (headset or speaker/mike required)
Question: what hapens when contacts entered this way into Outlook are sunchronized with the
Pocket PC (Windows Mobile 5.0)?
Answer : all contact's numbers are entered into the Contacts list in the 'correct' format.
(the same format with the bracket, as is noted in PC Outlook)
My findings: the problem arrises when you use your mobile capable Pocket PC
(i.e. the super cool Qtek 9000) and try to dial someone on to his mobile or office phone that are on another
area code...
the Pocket PC, or Windows Mobile 'Phone dialer' dials EXACTLY
as the number is entered in the above mentioned format
(the mobile operator recognises the + at the beggining of the number, but
does not understand the spaces and the brackets!!! and offcourse
the mobile operator returns an error voice message that a wrong number has been dialed!
What am I to do?
Can I find/download/install a proper phone dialer (i.e. MS Phone Dialer) that comes with Windows?
Phone Dialer 1.5
Developed for Microsoft by Active Voice
http://www.activevoice.com/dialer
bottom line is that CISCO systems aquired this Phone Dialer in 2001 and Active Voice discontinued developing/supporting whit app. (link on the Active Voice site is outdated and no support on MS site, as well)
(please do not post solutions as: "you should reformat your number entries etc. because I have 800+ contacts and counting...)
P.S. what I gathered is that this is not device related it is just OS and app related. I had the same problem with my previous Nokia phone... (I did not solve. Actually I thought I will solve with this device...)
I've set the Dialing Rules with my country code and area code (Mobile etc.) So, I don't have a clue what am I doung wrong
I saw a review of ETEN M600 in a (italian) magazine: there was a photo showing the wm5-integrated voice command...the problem is: why does my qtek 9000 only have voice speed dial (to call contacts or launch apps) and the lower-class m600 has a full featured program, that can also - as clearly shown in the photo that struck me - read sms (!!), call telephone numbers even if not stored in the contacts database, and many many more interesting actions??
is there a way to extract it and use it on Universal?? I'd really like to have sms read to me (useful while driving), and the radio/bt/wifi turned on and off without having to open it, turn it on and click click click... it takes no more than 10 seconds but sometimes it's annoying!!
any hints about that?? any suggestion??
Isn't this just Voice Command? Why not just install Voice Command to allow you to execute commands like radio on/off etc?
V
MS voice command 1.5 you mean?? but as far as I remember (It's been a long time since I last used it on my old PDA) it can't read sms or so....
It can if you know how
However, out of the box I don't know if it can.
V
I don't understand...you mean that there's a way to have it reading out loud all my text messages?? oh man that would be great!! are you talking seriously or is it just a technical fantasy?? tell me I'm so curious!!!

Hmm! ;-)
Vijay555, do you mean there's a way to discover some more hidden capabilities in Microsoft Voice Command 1.5 UK?
I really would love to have some more functions in this. Don't see any upgrades coming at moment.
I don't know about hidden capabilities in Voice Command itself.
But there are other ways to make the Phone speak and there are a couple of competing speech engines out there.
I'm currently working on a speech program, VJLoquitur, using Flite and some other stuff.
Anyone going to the Modaco meeting this Saturday? I'll be showing it off there, hopefully.

I'm looking to know if the Jabra BT800 is compatible with the Qtek 9000, anyone can help me?
Sorry about the delay, only just noticed this question, yes, the BT800 works with the Universal / XDA Exec / Qtek 9000 I use one myself.
Hi,
I can also confirm the Jabra works fine.

Just the number! MS BT stack doesn't implement this interesting feature.
However you can use the SW on this link http://www.jetwaremobile.com/index.htm from JETware Mobile
Evidence! I saw letters on my JABRA BT800 today!!!

Hi All!!!!
Yes, I saw letters on my JABRA's display after about one year of using this piece of almost useless crap! I have installed the latest version from jetwaremobile.com and it finally works. Previos versions just didn't worked!
(I wouldn't like to describe all issues and low quality if BT800, I just use it in a car to answer urgent calls.)
BUT!
1. If the name in the contact calling you - is not in English - you will see nothing on the LCD Screen;
2. It takes ages the name to appear on the screen (5 rings or more) even if I called few times;
3. It uses Jabra's internal memory to store the contacts. So, if you have 1000+ contacts (like I do), there is no chance to use this feature. (But, you stil can create a separate Category for the hot contacts, and setup jetwaremobile's software discussed here to load only these numbers).
So, All, train your memory and remember all your 1000+ phone numbers yourself
In my case names are displayed quite fast. But I've just a few hundreds of contacts... if it makes the difference.
Also managed to have previous versions working (v1 and v1.11. OK also for 1.20 Beta)
I guess your problem with non English names, means non occidental characters!? Because it is OK with mine and they are not English.
To avoid some potential problems I've ticked in 'Advance options', just what I'm interested in, 'Caller ID'
My only frustration is that I wish large names to scroll, otherwise many contacts seems to be the same...
@dima_the_chief
how can you browse contacts from bt800. I only know about last ten calls are stored in headset.
As for delay this is true but only sometime when devices loose conectivity, usualy works fine for me with xda2 wm2005.

As far as I understood dima, didn't say that.
In fact BT800 doesn't allow to browse contacts stored on device!
then what to understood with:
3. It uses Jabra's internal memory to store the contacts. So, if you have 1000+ contacts (like I do), there is no chance to use this feature. (But, you stil can create a separate Category for the hot contacts, and setup jetwaremobile's software discussed here to load only these numbers).

It means BT800 uses internal memory to keep lookup tables, that would allow to correlate an incoming number, with the correspondent name.
Doesn't mean you can browse the contacts list, from the headset, what in fact you can't.
Most probably it is technically close to be possible, bu it isn't in the feature list or at least implemented so.

But, I can review last 10 incoming calls. I can see names instead of numbers.
There is a compatibility sheet on http://jetwaremobile.com/bthfx/support.htm .
It says that BT 800 only can do a Voice dial, In-band ringtones and the Caller Id.

Why dont you think, BT800 loads the name for the incoming call on demand? That could explain the delay for the Caller Name display on incoming call.

HI All, gabiz_ro!
Sorry for bullshitting you, but my latest investigations shows, that, even the jetwaremobile's SW will try to send all off my 1000+ contacts to the BT800 it wount accept them.
My proposition about storing all the contacts in internal memory of the BT 800 - is wrong.
But, other BT headsets still can do that! And those devices can browse the phonebook. Like Parrot 3200 LS doest. But, it has a limitation of contacts to load. In this case you have to create a Hot Contacts cathegory in your contacts.
Hope this post gave clearance on the subject.

warn the newbies -- DONT purchase JABRA BT 800
Hi All!
With this post I would like to warn the newbies against purchasing the JABRA BT 800.
Guys!!!!!!!! Spend some time and find another product!
More reliable, stable and usefull!!! You will NOT meet your challenge with purchasing this useless crap!
After using for about a year of BT 800, I have finally got it bricked.
I would not like to discribe here my unseccessful experience of using it for a year, will only descirbe the technological issues in the product.
The main buttons stopped responding to my presses. As the warranty is almost not working in my place, I tryed to repair the device myself.
The reason was - the tailanted chaineese engineer's solution to use the small ****ty piece of the plastic as a spring for the buttons. Of course after the year of rare using, this plastic part was broken, preventing the microswitch to be pushed.
Had to change the button's design and introduce the spiral spring to make it working again.
Sorry for the technical details, ALL, just do not buy BT 800 not to be concerned to the subject.
Yes, I am a strong man, and have weight down the buttons, especially when JABRA do not respond to my pressings during the incoming calls (How many of them I lost thanks to BT 800!!!!!).
How will I live further? Will buy an expencive but more reliable kar kit to use in a car and will continue using just a plain Uni for regular calls.

JetWare Works on MDA but...
I like this program and all but before installing it, I used to be able to hear my actual phone ringing instead of it just ringing in my Jabra BT800 headset. I can't seem to figure out how to have them both ringing, any suggestions?

Just not possible. It is the normal behaviour JetWare implemented, just like that.
See their answer I received this week about the same question, bellow.
"The behavior you observe, of the ring going only to the headset when “Use phone ringtones” is checked, is expected behavior."
Does anyone have the tekkeon ez 3000 with the Jetware app using the Universal? Any comments?

Does this mean that when you are reviewing the 10 incoming calls you see names instead of numbers? I can see only the numbers despite that I use jetware so I see the names when the call is coming in.
Here I am going to reposit the multiple dev topics i am working on and a dev blog and where we r pushing.
Some of these topics will have been discussed before and apps released.
I am going to take 'em and tie em together for bigger goal.
Some of these Mortscript apps were written a long time ago and can benefit from a more robust version of Mortscript.
Also I will post as many script tools here as I can. Some tools are scripts I have written but don't deem their own thread. Other things are the real applications I find indispensable.
Links to real apps...

Wav player - Mort seems not to want to play different types of wav files. This app will let u test them through mort. I will list the types that Mort doesnt play and the types of wav it does play.
bluetooth functionality.
Currently there is no working Bluetooth toggler for phones with the Widcomm bluetooth stack. I made a working toggler with the help of Pocketmax PhoneAlarm. I am pretty sure i can make a stand alone bluetooth toggler now.
With Phone alarm i can have the bluetooth go on and off when I plug my phone in. As long as I can use Phone alarm I have that issue licked. I could Mort that, but Phone alarm is so great that if I can use it, i do. All these apps I work with I am stuck with the trial versions, but since I end up resetting my phone every other week that never is too much of a problem.
The remaining issue is with turning on Microsoft Voice command with my car settings. We're going to take a look at that here. For auto profile switching i can detect if the car is connected AND my computers bt dongle is connected, i am at home: (disable the car bt so i dont miss calls) Also if first connect of computer after being connected to car, auto run ActiveSync and sync up.
Also I can have Voice command msg me with spoken msgs using the SMS sender I wrote. What could work better is to make appts and have voice command read those. I expect to bump into some walls.
After a number that is unknown but the number is available can popup a while pages with the number.
sill want a whois posted to the dialer screen status. will the internet kill the call? no, right?
So my phone cant run http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=298279&page=6 but i can make it work with mortscript. also phonelog should do this on my phone can do this, but it is always 5 hours off when it stores it. i have complained about this bug for the last 2 years or so, but since i am the only one with this problem, updates have never fixed this for me. obviously i should just write my own.

internot
A good hard look at the connected to internet detector. Why does iexplore connect to the internet and morts sometimes don't?
One more for the pie.
Issues and walls that are suck.
I dont have GPS, or even rkLocation. WTH. But I do have internet. Which means maybe I could use a web page What;s my ip to get a location. I couldnt use that to drive a map program of course but just maybe I could tell that I was not at home and set my bluetooth and stuff to on.
Some apps use a static location. If i can get a zip it might be possible to inject it for the app to use.
Also, we can't detect how much memory a program takes up, for example in a task manager. but we do know how much memory was available before we opened the app and then how much free after.

A number of lost phone apps can do certain remote tricks. I don't want to reinvent any wheels, but none of these apps work on my Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone. To tell the truth I already have gotten most of the lost phone functionalities working with StatusTicker. But we can go a bit further than just send back SMS with GPS or even rkLocation (I can do that, sure). Here are some additions I will be workin on shortly:
Remote activation of cameras to take some pictures and remote live video.
http://www.mobiletopsoft.com/pocket-pc/download-mobiscope-video-from-webcams-2-6-15.html
Remote trigger an online backup.
File Forte (Auto FTP backup)
Shozu
Apps that capture documents and upload em to online could also capture the call logs and sms logs.
Evernote
Dashwire (I better hurry while it's free)
Qiik? sends video
Send Back data:
Send me all my SMS Received/Sent
Send me my call history
What's my phone's Ip?
Remote purge
Remote lock
Turn on the bluetooth and annoy the neighbors. It could be possible to turn on the bt and then use it like a range finder with a different phone. Of course we can just unmute it remotely if its muted and trigger an alarm sound.
Downloading on a smartphone
I'm Batman
Here we will look at keycap ing and how close we can approximate it.
Using Iexplore as a config editor.
I am pretty sure I can use html pages to modify config ini's.
By having the page pass itself the arguments on the url, they show up in the page title and thereby can be reintegrated with Mort.
I already set up the html a few years ago on a e-commerce site I worked on. I found my old javascript codes which pass and interpret the ? and & variables you see in the url address bar. This means I can can use check boxes, input boxes, etc...
I am thinking this is going to be very cool.
Poor mans motion detector
So can we make a motion detector?
take picture
take another
compare size.
if size <> image has changed.
What about taking a picture/screenshot and if its black then we can check its size and see that it is dark?
If there is no native camera click option, and we can't access the camera sometimes, we may be able to leave the camera view open and then take screenshots with a screenshot app and then use those picks...
***
Mort doesnt give size of an app in memory.
so we would have to subtract the new free space from the old memory. yikes?
AppToDate - Mortscript support and integration
integrate Apptodate version checking and updating without using apptodate:
AppToDate Subroutine for Mortscript
Hi,
So I have AppToDate support in my Voice command app. So if you have AppToDate it will report whether you need an update and can download and install from there.
I have made a subroutine for your AppToDate supported mortscript app so it can check for an update.
We could have it download the updated cab. I can't use the download command since I have a smartphone. I guess I could make the PPC version and then have my app run AppToDate on my Smartphone.
And to think I hesitated.

Infra red receiver/transmitter
i wonder if i can make a Infra red receiver/transmitter with mortscript?
Well we cant do infra red output. but we could activate the infra red receiver and then use a remote control on it?
Phone Utils
Can we identify the caller and if known, open the contact with that callers name. Yes, I think we can.
Bluetooth
Solution : all system sound in headset
I found a solution for route all system sounds in a non-stereo Bluetooth headset, the microphone still works for calls but at the end of a call the sound is back in the speaker and must restart to make it work again.
Does anyone know what is the problem?
To do this we must change a registry value: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Widcomm\Connections
Choose your device hands free in the right folder 0001 0002 0003 ....
And change the value of BDDevClass 24 04 04 to 12 01 04

1-way long codes:
Germany: +49 17 6888 50505
Sweden: +46 737 494222
All other countries: +44 762 4801423
We're working on getting more local short codes for other places, and we'll update this list as they become available. If you travel out of the country, check with your mobile provider to see if they route text messages to local short codes, of if you'll need to use the international number instead.
If you use 40404, you can send and receive unlimited messages from Twitter, but we do advise you to check with your provider to make sure your text plan covers text messaging. If you use one of our other numbers, you're limited to 250 messages per week, refreshing every Sunday at 12:00am GMT.
For people using any number other than 40404: once your phone is verified, you'll be able to send your updates to +44 7624 801423 , but you will not be able to receive text updates from Twitter. Find out more on the Twitter Blog.
A word of caution for UK residents using the international number: some carriers don't charge an international fee to use the Twitter international number within the UK, but others do. Some carriers consider it an international number and charge from .15 to .25 per message. Remember to check your phone plan for international rates; be aware that even in the UK, standard messaging rates vary by carrier, and do apply.

Hi
I don't know if this is maybe a phone issue or an android issue? you have to forgive me as I have finally gone to android from apple after 5 years
I have this really annoying problem now that when my phone pairs with my car on Bluetooth there is no problem with downloading contacts, call history etc except now when I get an incoming call it only displays the number and not the contact name which can be frustrating if it is someone that I don't want to talk too.
All my contacts are mainly UK but I travel abroad a lot so they are stored on google contacts with the international prefix as +44 but when I get an incoming call it shows it as 07**** which is the normal number without the international code and no contact name. I only have this problem with incoming calls in the car on Bluetooth any other time displays name fine.
Any help or ideas would be great .

I think that depends on the car you have. With my car eveything looks fine and shows the contact info. Even with both my mobiles connected (iPhone SE as secondary phone) everything works fine.
