Speedtests...≠ Rev A? - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

What gives.
I've done a number of speed tests from a few different locations and my results are always around these numbers, which, from what i've seen, are nowhere near Rev A speeds. I am running 3.2.6 with radio 3.37.75 with Alltel. Im located in mid to northeastern ohio.
Does anyone have some advice on how to unlock rev a, or otherwise get it working (because i am pretty sure my phone is not using it after these speed tests)?

PIE Performance Issues/Questions

I wasn't sure where to post this so sorry if in the wrong place. I am in the Orlando area where 3G signal is fairly strong. But when running DSL Reports mobile speed tests I am only getting between 500 and 600 kb/s on average and sometimes as low as 195 to 200. The 500-600 results are using both the 600 and 1MB tests. I am on Ultimate 4mb with 1.40.30 radio.
Anyone have any ideas for settings or other things I can look at to make sure I am set up correctly?
Or is this average for the Orlando area?
Thanks for any ideas.

How do you tell if you have EVDO Rev A.

I'm on the Telecom NZ network with the Vogue.. when I download SPB Monitor GPRS(monitors CDMA as well) tells me I'm downloading at 700Kb/s does this mean Rev A.
With internet sharing on (USB>Touch>Internet) IE said I was downloading at 50KB/s, its been higher too
What speed does the older one do?
The Touch is not (as of yet) Rev A enabled, so no, you are not running on Rev A.
When it is enabled, you will see download speeds ranging anywhere from your current speeds (300-1000 kbps) up to a max of around 2 mbps.
Uploads should also increase from around 100 kbps to an average of about 300 kbps, although some see uploads as high as 6-700 on occasion.
My best speed tests on my Mogul (which is Rev A enabled) gave me about 2.2 mbps down, and 550 kbps up. I can average about 1 mbps down and 300 kbps up everywhere I go. Hopefully the Touch gets GPS and Rev A soon, but there is no official date set.

Modem comparison using SpeedTest app

Hey guys. I have been using the out of the box EG30 modem up until today. Never had LOS and for the most part had good 3G speed but kind of crappy 4G speed. Today I finally decided to flash the EL13 modem.
Using SpeedTest app (with same location) I did FIVE speed test on EG30 modem and FIVE speed test on EL13 modem. The test were done at the same time and in the same exact location. I did test on the 3G and 4G speeds. The rom I used on all test was CALKULIN's 2.5 rom. Here are the results:
EG30 modem: 3G avg = 1.35 DL, 184 UL and 97 ping
4G avg = 3.28 DL, 355 UL and 143 ping
EL13 modem: 3G avg = 1.51 DL, 190 UL and 93 ping
4G avg = 4.2 DL, 594 UL and 123 ping
As you can see from my test flashing the EL13 provided moderate increases in DL and UL speed. Like on my EG30 modem, I have not experienced any LOS yet (have only been on this modem for a few hours though.)
Feel free to post your comparisons between modems...it may help someone decide whether they want to flash another modem.
Nice. Thanks.

How about EG30 vs EK02 vs EL13?
Now that the EG30 is avail to download and restore to stock, I'm interested in determining which modem pulls down faster d/l (all subject to area).
Also, did you notice any screen / transition lag on EL13 compared to Eg30?
My signal strength and d/l speeds seem the same but my u/l speeds do seem much faster, not the results I hoped for but it's an improvement lol. Can't test 4g...not sure it really exist.

must be nice to be able to get anywhere remotely close to that dl speed, best I seen ever here is 700Kbps
EG31 next.
I have a hunch that it's the fastest, but, that can change from minute to minute, place to place, phone to phone, etc to etc.
Though getting 3G speeds like that you seem to be in the perfect place to actually test these modems.
I get the best results with EG31....but, that's just me....and I haven't done back to back radio tests since my evo3d when the eng. radio got leaked

You beat me to it. I see serious variations between tests. Maybe if someone can run 10 tests on each and took the average of the 10 to compare....

I've tried this before and even on the same phone with 10-20 back to back tests in the exact same spot, speeds vary so much, it's really hard to say what causes the speed changes.
The network has many, many users on it and their use is not controllable. If 10 users on the tower are tethered and DLing a torrent, that will affect everyone on the tower...
Unless you can control who is on the tower and how much bandwidth the tower has available, these tests aren't very reliable.
If you want something that *might* be meaningful, you'll need same phones with different modems side by side and running the test at identical times. You'll need to do dozens of trials and vary the time of day and week. Over time a trend will occur and then you can begin to make inferences about THAT tower in THAT area ONLY.
You might also consider a different testing software. Speed Test, for me, has always been highly variable. I've tried different apps on the market but I seem to get the most consistent results using speakeasy.net (website) rather than the application on the phone.
I am on EG30 modem and my wife's phone is on the new EK02 modem. I do side by side testing at home and at restaurants where we eat. There is no improvement. At any one time doing the same test on 3G and 4G, the speed difference can be + or -(10-50%) with no clear indication of which one is the better modem. Tried both the speedtest and speakeasy.net website. I have done this 50-60 times for 2 months before and after the update. There is no way I can draw a conclusion about which modem is better so I left mine at EG30 running Calk 2.0 which is based on EK02 rom and kernel.
Our 3g speed in Tampa/St Pete is anywhere from 200kbps to 2000kbps with the average of around 500kbps. Our 4G averages around 2000kbps but there are plenty of area around town including our house where we can regularly pull 5000kbps and up to 10MBPS if I hold my mouth just right. Testing with our own wifi shows that we can consistently get the same speed. Testing with 3g/4g, no way to predict which phone will post a higher score.
Just did 6 consecutive tests with speakeasy.net using 4g with 2 bars and the results are as follow(in Mbps):
3.5, 1.7, 1.2, 3.4, 4.61, 3.14
I moved 6ft to the left:
1.19, 1.4, then I switched to a server that was farther away and got 2.0
Trying to get a consistent number is futile but getting a range of number is not.

Looks cool, but what are the units? mbits?
Getting my Epic on Monday. New to this whole scene, coming from an EVO 4G. Whats the best modem? And which should I avoid?
el13
for me, el13 has drastically improved my 3g dl and ul speeds.

"cant test 4g... Not sure it really exists" hahahaha same here. Im not sure there really is 4g. I have never seen it or used it. Theres definately ZERO 4g on kauai
---- speed test app that every one uses seems to not be reliable for me here in hawaii what so ever. Its really a joke. How ever the most reliable and 100% consitent test is not a app, its a web site that is bar non the best out there. http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ try it out. You cant be dissapointed, especially for those of you in Hawaii that cant reliably use speedtest.net app

[Q] Measuring local network performance

Hi,
What apps do you use to measure local network performance?
I know that we usually use SpeedTest to measure 3G or broadband performance.
But, I want to measure the speed of my wireless access point locally.
So, something like transferring big file from Windows network share to my phone and measure the transfer speed.
Thanks.

Try to transfer a file that is 1024MB big, and measure the time it takes to get it to your phone.
Calculate: 1024MB/{Time measured}/60 = MB/s
MB/s * 8 = Mbit/s
Example: 1024MB sized File takes 13 minutes to download.
1024 / 13 / 60 = 1.31282 MB/s
1.31282 MB/s * 8 = 10.502 Mbit/s
/Edit: The bigger the file you transfer is, the more accurate the results will be.

[Q] TELUS GNex Baseband Issues

Hello:
I have a TELUS Galaxy Nexus with yakju 4.02 installed, which unfortunately, I installed without checking what the stock software versions were. After reading through the radios thread, I played around with the various radios and got the following results:
Ping Down Up
xxkk1
1074 1.71 3.33
203 2.02 3.36
232 1.43 1.66
200 3.20 3.13
xxkk6
217 3.59 3.60
229 3.64 1.73
253 2.04 2.97
634 3.74 1.72
240 3.68 1.72
xxkl1
214 2.18 3.64
207 3.17 3.82
213 3.97 1.73
204 3.79 3.71
455 3.04 3.83
ugkk7
195 2.97 3.68
934 2.18 4.01
1227 3.68 3.68
928 2.42 3.75
938 2.49 3.29
with ugkk7, I see some 3 -> H going on, GPS takes a while to go away in notification bar
ugkl1
202 3.02 3.86
919 3.40 4.10
210 2.07 3.80
200 3.27 3.77
903 2.94 3.59
I'm wondering if moving to Google's 4.02 fubar'd my phone.
Using the same TELUS SIM in my unlocked Galaxy S2 LTE (it's a V2 SIM, so no LTE, and LTE was disabled) I'm getting a consistent ~90-100ms ping, as well as 8Mb/s down and between 1.5-2.0Mb/s up.
Using a Rogers iPhone 4, I'm getting a consistent ~160ms ping and about 6Mb/s down and 2.0-2.5Mb/s up.
My Galaxy Nexus results have been all over the place, and I'm not sure why. I think for the time being I'll use ugkl1, but does anyone have any ideas on what to do? Could it be my phone?
I doubt anyone here still has a stock 4.0-4.01 TELUS GNex that they could test...
Here are the speedtest.net results I am currently getting on a stock 4.0.1 TELUS nexus in Ottawa, ON. Is there a better program to test network speeds?
Download Upload Latency ServerName
4105 1531 95 Kanata, ON
2872 492 144 Kanata, ON
2943 778 111 Mount Royal, QC
4106 800 81 Mount Royal, QC
4525 1027 92 Mount Royal, QC
5987 1742 130 Kanata, ON
6036 1453 63 Kanata, ON
5307 1630 70 Kanata, ON
4850 1246 88 Kanata, ON
Not that I'm aware of.
Your Nexus is behaving a lot better than mine.
Can you see what baseband and version you are using?
//just tested again with my Galaxy S2 LTE. Getting ~35-50ms ping times and 6Mb/s down 3Mb/s up.
Those look like pretty standard telus speeds here in alberta.
I've tried every baseband available. Most reliable for me is XXKK6. My speed test right now is 200/3.1/1.3
Would love to see some better speeds one day.
