Howdy,
I've just upgraded to the O2 Orbit phone, and am trying to get the GPS working, however, I can't seem to. In settings, all I can see is external gps, but this phone should have an inernal one (it even has the antenna in the back).
For the life of me, i can't seem to find out how to get the GPS working... anyone could help?
a.
Hi Adam.
Which GPS software are you using on your device?
At the moment, none, as before I bite the bullet and buy one, I wanted to see how good the GPS receiver was... so I tried the TomTom GPS driver, that includes a testing thing that shows locks on sats, and so far, after about 10 minutes, still nothing...
Having said that, I tried Google Maps, and that can't get a GPS lock either.
Try making sure the settings are setup for the default configuration before using GOOGLE MAPS.
Start>Settings>External GPS>GPS PROGRAM PORT = COM4
Then try google maps using try MENU>Track Location and see if the GPS starts working flashing AMBER LED and you should get a text message at the top of the screen saying initializing GPS and searching for sats.
Good luck, I found this Artemis to work beautifully with TOMTOM6 and a 2GB mSD card.
I've added a program called GPS Viewer, this gives you GPS gives some handy GPS details.
As for the GPS settings:
Programs
GPS program port:COM4
Hardware
GPS hardware portNone)
Baud rate:115200
Access
I have 'Manage GPS automatically' ticked.
My deveice always seems to want a vertically sight of the sky to locate the satellites but once connected i can take it indoors no problems.
Interestlingly, when I make the change to Baud Rate in hardware, and click ok... if I go back, it has reset itself to 4800?
A.
quickGPS
in my HTC3300, I've found QUICKGPS ? I've tried to run it, but after a few minutes it send a message so it cannot make the connection
Anyone can help me
thx a lot
michael
quick GPS is just to speed up the process the phone neesd to locate the sattelites.
well but if i were you i would check the baudrate. the default setting is at 4800
thank you very much really nice tip i spend about 3 hours try to get it working but now done it in 1 minuts and working but keep saying no valid signals whats that mean???

HTC has this function listed (on the cooked ROM as well). I'd be most grateful if anybody can tell me how to activate it?
I searched the forum and found one where there is a long discussion and registry changes without success.
Thank you
When searching the web (google the great!) found this info. Has anybody tried it? However it is for HTC Tytn.
Well I descibed my problem and solution in the first thread you mention;
If I exit the camera and the storage is set to my SD-card, GPS Photo doesn't work the next time I start up the camera.
If I set the storage to the Main Memory and then exit, GPS Photo does work the next time. Even if I switch back to SD-card before activing GPS Photo.
I've tried out all possibilities and this quite logical order seams to work.
I didnt install the fix or replace any DLL-files since I hope that Meschle can cook the solution into a next release of his ROM when hes got more time.
Let me know if it works for you!
GPS-Photo works only when your main memory is selected.
Thank you all . I will try this.
I found out another operation that doesn't work when you use the SD card .
When you choose a picture to set the background for 'Today' screen the 'Transparancy' option doesn't appear if the picture is in the SD card. However it appears if the picture is in the 'Pictures' folder in 'My Document' in Main memory.
Use this CAB, it changes some drivers for gps making it usable by the camera
PS: to work properly ensure (COM3) starts automatically, if doesn't start it manually... (TaskMgr can help you to see if device it working or not)
Hey hey everyone. I have just got myself an XDA Orbit. First few hours was working ok, then it started to not load/gps would not work atall. So i decided to get the official o2 WM6 and that seems to have done it.
But now the programs i thought were standerd arnt there no more. I had a GPS program that had some like bar graph type things, and telling me how many satiliets i was connected to. Cant remember the name now.
Other GPS tester programs ive found cant seem to connect. Is this a problem with my GPS ? As it did work for a few hours, or is there certain points where there are "blind sots" ?
EDITI just tried the GPS Test 1.04, and i got 1 green bar and one yellow. Keeps changing to either 2 yellow or one yellow. The fihures at the top still havent changed though. Not sure if this is good as this is my first phone with gps inside. If it helps my settings are:
COM Port: COM4
Baud RateL 4800.
These are what i have seen in settings looking around. I havent changed any of them.
I also have a 4GB micro SD card. This card used to work ok, but now the phone shows there is no card, and the card reader on my laptop does not pick it up either.
EDITFound out that the card i have is SDHC, and i understand that it cant run without drivers. Tried to find some but they dont seem to work. the card worked before i put the official o2 update on there.
Any advice/information/answers would be great. I apoligies for any spelling mistakes.
Hi Vildar,
Since no Orbitites have answered you I will
I was just lurking from the Diamond(Ignito) forums, I have an old Orbit too, just feeling nostalgic
I see from your edits that you are starting to find your way around the Orbit slowly
I guess that, unless there's a backup file somewhere on your SDHC card then you can kiss all the original apps goodbye after your WM6 flash. In a lot of ways that's not such a bad thing as these machines tend to get full of junk after a while (my Ignito is already)
Your GPS COM4 4800baud settings are correct, I suggest you install some GPS apps to test such as:
GPS Cycle Computer - A superb app which is what XDA-Dev is all about
Try the QVGA version of course or how about:
GPS Skinner which has the satellite signal page that might help you.
The Sirf chip in the Artemis/Orbit is much better than the Qualcomm integrated one in the Diamond IMO (and a few other peoples') so you should be able to get a good signal and a quick fix (*You HAVE run QuickGPS to update the ephemeris data haven't you???) - Search the Artemis forum to find out how to point QuickGPS at the best server.
I also found a good file manager such as Total Commander or GSFinder to be very useful
A task manager like FdcSoft this one
And/Or Magic Button
I also used RhinoLaunch
You could try running chkdsk etc. on your SD card if it won't show in your card reader, even if you have to format it you haven't lost anything after all.
If you do need to Hard Reset make sure you have kept all you application cabs somewhere safe and use the excellent Pim Backup 2.8 to backup your personal data, SMS, call history etc.
The main thing is SEARCH IS YOUR BEST FRIEND (login first for best results) read EVERYTHING and welcome to the club dude

Thanks for the reply . I have managed to get both the GPS and my Card working. Found the right driver after a while. As for the GPS, not sure how i fixed it but it all works now. But i know have a few more problems.
I have 2 navigation programs. Tomtom7, and Igo8. Igo8 freezes and dies when i go to put an address in. Works ok with postcode.
Second, is there a way i can make files i recive from bluetooth go to my storage card instead of my phone? Just a pain having to move it all to the card.
BTW Thanks for the apps. Downloading them now
Has anyone managed to get their GPS Locking in Google Maps?
I've used QuickGPS to download the database and set Google Maps to use GPS but it never gets a fix.
When in TomTom it knows theres satalites about but doesn't connect to any.
Wondering if I have a duff.... anyone else?
How fast do you connect to satalites?
Have you been out of the house? Some houses really interferre with the connection.
Also, maybe there are some settings in the application you have to change? It should get a fix pretty quick. (first time from 10 sec tot 60, after that, below 10 sec).
So you have updated the quick GPS? Did you (after running tomtom and getting the update for the first time) do a soft reset?

Yeah, did a soft reset after I turned A-GPS on in Advanced Config program. Have tried it in work which usually gets a fix, but will try outdoors, just thought I'd ask the question first
why did you do it on in advanced config? maybe that's where it went wrong. Can't remember me having to put A-GPS on in advanced Config program.
I had the issue in google maps where I could not get a lock. I had to manually configure connectivity to com port 4 in settings.
After that it has worked perfectly. I cannot say if TomTom works or not as I am waiting for my ne SD card to be delivered.
I have however noticed that everytime I sync with active sync QuickGPS always moans it is out of date even thoguh I might have updated it about 1/2 an hour ago.
Its not a major issue as its connected to my PC and just downloads the data again. i'm just ignoring it.
Do not use A-gps.
I have my TP2 fixing with no problem without it: first fix in 55", then always under 10".
Try and use for first fix Quickgps.

Brilliant, turned off A-GPS and loaded TomTom 7.915/Google Maps, got a lock, even indoors.
Spot on, thanks for that!
Turn off A-GPS?
I keep seeing that to make the GPS work better, while also using QuickGPS, the A-GPS should be turned off?
How do I do this?
I have only had the Touch Pro2 for a few days, but have not been able to get a satellite lock in Google Maps even when standing outside away from many buildings.
If it would work better with A-GPS disabled, please tell me how to do this!
Thanks,
Dazzer

It should be turned off by default, I turned mine on using a program called Advanced Config.

Ok, thanks, just going to go try Google Maps again to see if I can get a lock. Maybe I just wasn't outside long enough, or far enough away from buildings last time.
Hopefully I can make GPS work soon
Ok, I just sat outside for about 20 minutes, in the middle of a field, away from any buildings, and was unable to get any GPS lock!
What is wrong here?
I have not touched the GPS Port settings in the control panel, but Google Maps only says Seeking Satellites (0) all the time.
If I do change Google Maps to use COM 4 Baud 4800, it gets worse and says Seeking Satellites (48037656) or some other equally stupid number! At least 0 makes sense, as there are not millions of GPS satellites, only about 20!
Please help, surely there is some way to make GPS work?
Thanks,
DW
Hi all,
AGPS is not currently supported by any UK Networks, so should be turned off if in the UK.
Cheers,
Beasty
i think i ended up setting all mine to com0 but i think it wasn't working originally coz i was sitting in the car and it badly needs a wash (yes that bad). Just stuck it up by window for around 2 mins and it had 8 satellites but i've reset it so often since i last used the gps i wouldn't have been surprised with around 5 mins ... 20 on the other hand is a bit daft
Yeah, I'm beginning to wonder if there is something wrong with settings somewhere, as in 20 minutes outside it never indicated a single satellite in Google Maps.
I have downloaded the Advanced Configuration tool, and it says that A-GPS is Disabled, which is correct for the UK, so there is nothing to change here.
I have tried changing the Port settings, but I don't know what I should change it too. The Hardware GPS port is blank!
Getting close to giving up for the day, but I really want to get GPS working soon!

Ok, I had the same problems, have you updated Quick GPS? Are you using Google Maps?
If you go into settings and go to External GPS my GPS Program Port os COM4 next page GPS Hardware Port is none and Baud Rate is 4800.
Make sure settings are same and restart phone.
Have you installed anything since getting phone? Might be worth doing hard reset and trying is "out of the box" so to speak.
I could confirm the GPS is working and flawlessly! Much quicker than my old HTC P3600i and the locking is done in the CBD area!
I used the QuickGPS (download the latest update) and then using my GPS software called TechrificWay for Australian (it's a rebrand of NavNGo iGo MyWay 8)
Very happy ^^
(I need to set the TechrificWay application settings to find the GPS unit on COM4 though)
I actually spoke to HTC today and they think it's actually a fault with the hardware, possibly the internal antenna for the GPS is not connected properly.
Slightly annoying as I now need to send it back to get a replacement, or have it repaired, but good in that it's not a problem with me using it! There definitely is something wrong that I can't fix, I just can't wait to get one that works now!
I can get a lock, but get bad lag, and it wonders off course regularly. I wonder if it could be that the radio is not that great for GPS, as many other HTCs have suffered with GPS performance that has gotten better with certain flashed radios?
HTC gave me a generic response of "check these settings" (which were all as they should be in terms of com port and baud rate etc... So I think I'll have to call them if it keeps crapping out on me
(Fortunately) For me it turned out to be a genuine hardware fault causing the GPS to not work. I spoke to HTC and they believe I was the first in the UK to need to get a replacement due to a genuine hardware fault, which I guess is an honor (just a very annoying one!).
Even with the GPS not working for the week that I used it, I loved the handset, can't fault it, and can't wait until tomorrow when I should be receiving my brand new replacement, hopefully with working GPS and no faults!
Thanks for the suggestions here though, I needed to make sure it was a hardware fault before sending it back for a replacement.
I've tested three over 30km trips with Tom Tom 7 installed on the device.
Haven't lost a signal once. So it works fine here in Finland.

Just wanted to ask that
Are you outdoors, with a clear view of most of the sky? Is this a new phone? If brand new, it might take several minutes for initial lock, but then will find satellites much faster after that.
Have you messed with the settings at all? Or fresh out of the box?
Make sure your HTC GPS tool is set to port COM4.
Hi there,
I use this tool: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=571266
With this "GPS mod" my device will find satellites even when i'm indoors and reletively close to a window. The fix will usually happen within 10 seconds and it will fix on 6-12 sats (even when it's extremely cloudy/rainy).
I useTomTom 7 and it works extremely fast with almost no lag at all.
Read the instructions in the first post, they are easy and well documented.
Good luck!
