Hey for a while i was content with no scratch that amazed by the ricky and kavana roms but lately ive been looking at rickys rom kitchen that he had posted a while back and i feel relatively confident in my ability to make my own rom the only thing thats making me weary is the fact that he has a huge disclaimer saying he is not responsible if we brick the phone which is completely understandable I was just wondering what are the risks involved with making youre own rom and how difficult is it thanks in advanced
Good question
I kinda wanna know too. I wanna make my own but I don't know where to start. I found a ROM kitchen fir 6.1 but it was so confusing I gave up.
Come On
90 views and only one reply could someone gimmie some feed back plz
It is pretty tough especially if you do not know what you are doing. You have to take into consideration if you would like the chance to brick you phone because hey it could happen to the best of us.
NVM
Definitely not worth that risk even though my phones already screwed up as it the mic is broken so i have to use a bluetooth and people get my texts in random orders it sucks

This is my second post but I have flashed many times and have ended up with wm black 2.0. I have seen a few new threads now pretty much discussing the same issue in regard to the black 2.0 being shut down which is cool and all but at the same time just seems to be going on and on without resolution. Why not just fix it. Let the people who pissed off jas and anyone else who has been pissed off receive apologize and move on with new rules in place. I would rather see people get banned then lose out on the ROMs I have become addicted to.
This is just my opinion, I am a noob to the fullest and understand I'm probably about to get a verbal beat down but I know most times there is a way to fix things like this with a joint effort.
I would like to see jasjamming and others like him making future updates and not being forced to be selective in who gets it. Especially considering I am a noob myself I don't think Ill be high on anyone's list.
Just my .48, if a mod want to shut this down I take no offence, I actually don't even need response, just hoping to make a point. Thanks
Almost everyone I see on here has some sort of a problem with their phone. White screen, wifi not working, menus not showing up and god knows what else. Is there any ROM/upgrade/software that will make this phone stable?
mine runs perfectly fine, if you are unhappy with the current wm6 selections you can always fall back on the original cingular wm5 rom...
The very nature of the 8525, and the people on this forum, is FOR FUN!
The phone is highly cusomizable, and therein lies the instability.
Stick with stock and it will run fine!
only thing that really bothers me on custel rom is the IE getting stuck and not loading any pages. Requiring soft reset other then that so far so good!
reading threads and all the issues people have im wondering what they do to make it happen.
Ive had my phone for 6 months, flashed lots of different ROMS including WM5 and WM6 and i havent had any issues that i cant fix.
Software is wrote by humans so the quick and easy answer is .. no. There will never be a stable software that will work 100% on 100% of the phones. If you use Windows then your an unpaid beta tester for Microsoft. Think of this forum as a Microsoft forum for collecting all the issues and fixes for this software as a collaboration of every forum member. Just replace the Microsoft with HTC and that is more like it.
Stable and bug-free software? You are implying that people do their job and also test software? LOL, you should be a comedian. Look how well RIM tested their software last week (took down much of the Blackberry network).
that being said, what kinds of software are you looking for? Music/Video players? Text messaging apps? Office apps? Games?
I'm shocked at a question like this from someone with 6 whole posts. Ok, lesson in sarcasm over.
Look, you read a little and saw that with every new ROM there are problems. Read a little more and you usually find the fix to that very problem. If you yourself run into a problem, then you post and state what kinda problem you're having with what, then everyone else can help you. *sigh* This forum isn't a place where somethings released and all the angels and cherubs sing with praise. You have to have the patience and drive to know you're gonna run into problems from the get-go, but decide to stick around and work through them. Good luck in your quest to find the holy grail of apps though.
well it's just that id much rather be doing smething else than fixing my phone all day long. I'm not trying to offend anyone by the way, simply frustrated at fixin one thing and having another go wrong. Im gonna keep flashing untill it works rigth and if not, Im gonna giveup and go with stock since I'm not all that knowledgeable about this anyway

Re-flashing a new ROM wont fix anything. Have you read anything here? It's not offensive, and you're not offending anyone, but the whole process of flashing a ROM and seeing what works and what doesn't is what happens when you decide to do this. Each person here that's flashed a new ROM has thier own preferences as to what they want installed with it. Some apps are buggy, some aren't. If two people with identical phones flash identical new ROM's, they still might have totally different problems stemming from issues caused by what radio version they decided to try, what apps they installed or didn't install, whether they found the CAB that fixes a known problem or not. When I flashed my 8525 I went with Black 1.2 and still use it. Why? It's fast as hell, and over the weeks following the initial flash I found all the fixes to any problems I had incurred. Now my phone is sweet...to me. I'm happy. It wasn't a one day fix-all. Takes time to get it as near perfect as possible. Still freezes when I wanna run WAD on it, but oh well. It's something I know will happen when I use it. No biggie.
You need to be patient, and if you can't then this place isn't for you. You might be happier with the stock ROM that comes with your phone. It'll be less of a headache for yourself. Good luck in whatever you decide. I hope you decide to read more and work through the bugs. IMO I think you'll be happier in the end.

If you wish to have the most stable device possible your probably best off to download the latest Cingular ROM (which is WM5), ALL the WM6 roms here are developed by the community (obviously the chefs do the real hard work but the feedback from us users helps develop them) and such are improving ALL the time. Firstly since you are not up to date with your version of Black, upgrade to the latest one...also make sure you upgrade the SPL,IPL and Radio...these can contribute to stability.
How to upgrade to Black 2.5, IPL 1.04, SPL 2.10.olipro, Radio 1.41.00.10.
IF you are still not convinced then I would downgrade to WM5.

isn't this the whole point of this forum and the wikis??
i'm not experienced as those other guys, but i'm pretty sure i've learned enough in the last 2 months to not have to sit here all day debugging, the only reason i spend 2 hours is b/c there's always better roms coming out and then u gotta customize your phone again...
Finally Usable
Have you even tried ANY WM6 ROM from this forum in comparison to the original WM5 Cingular 8525 ROM? My 8525 was nearly unusable. It locked up constantly. It had the sleep of death constantly. It was horrible! I decided to flash it with a WM6 ROM for the hell of it, and suddenly it was a useful device again. I have tried several ROMs on this forum, and all were better than the original, and all required some tweaking to work how I like it. The current big three, Black 2.5, LVSW, and CUSTEL, are all infinitely more usable out of the gate than that POS WM5 version ever was. If you want a trouble free phone, get a plain jane phone that does nothing but make phone calls. If you want a useable Hermes device, flash it with any one of these ROMS.
okay
I installed windows xp back on my pc which made things a little easier. I think my phones finaly working in order without any suprises.
There's alot of units out for the touch, not like its anything rare..
But only 2 pages for the upgrading thread??
I just ordered a Touch for Sprint cause I get 3000 MIN. Nights/Weekends. Unlimited Txt/Pic Msg/Data. for $20 a month. So i'm breaking my Tmobile contract..
I like to try out new roms, but there really isn't much.
Will any cooking be happing in the Vogue forums? Hope so..
This was posted on PPCGeeks and my reply to this guy's post is below. I'm not saying your situation is just like this guy, but in order for this to flourish, we all have to work together to build ROMs. I am still very new to it, but once you starting playing around with building them, it begins to get easier. There are a few roms on PPCGeeks and I have a Alpha ROM on there FTP just to show I'm not just pulling your leg

Between ppcgeeks and XDA forums theres probably about 3 decent (mind you) roms. Its has nothing to do with "hunting" because its a completely different ballgame when you have the CMDA "Vogue" from Sprint.

I'm not trying to sound like an ass over this, but if you are "so disappointed" in Vogue ROMs... you might want to step up to the plate and do something about it. I know that is what I am trying to do by learning how to build a ROM. There is a lot of whining and b00n-ness in the Vogue forum, I think it has to do to the fact that this phone is *still* rather new to this community.
As far as the kitchens are concerned, (more or less) they are the same approach. It just bottom lines to the fact that there is a time requirement to build one and the necessity to actually sit down and learn something rather than pointing and clicking. I feel that there is an art to this since we don't have a GUI-based kitchen for the Titan or the Vogue. Because of this, I think more thanks needs to go to the people leading this battle (Cokeman, DogGuy, etc).
Again, I don't mean to incite anything, but complaining doesn't help the community in any way. I guess I have read too much of it lol. I apologize in advance if anyone gets upset over this *end rant*
In case you haven't seen it yet, a few Windows Mobile 6.1 ROMs have recently been uploaded.
You also might want to check out PPCGeeks.com Vogue Forum as there is a lot more activity there than here.
To be honest, I agree with Mr.Geoff...
I'd love to get down and dirty with ROM cooking, hell I might become the next Helmi.
Anyways, I can't start doing anything as I don't know where to start. If you can point me in the right direction, I should be able to take it from there.
I would like to learn how to do this myself, but, I've found it hard to get information to get started. I know this place is full of info, but when I search I can't seem to figure out were to even start. One thing I'd like to know before I do anything is how to make a backup of my current ROM and Radio and anything else that I might want to put back after a change. Do you have any good links or info to start by backing up my current device?

I have had to wander a lot on XDA and PPCGeeks to find the information I needed. There has/is a lot of info in the Hermes, Trinity, and Kaiser sections.
Attached is a Word document that does a pretty good job of giving you an idea of adding stuff to your custom ROM. I would give credit to the person that made it, but I don't remember who that is.
The software for creating an oem package that was mentioned in the document is not free, but there is also something else out there that does an acceptable job (and I use it). Again, I would give credit where it's due, but I don't remember where it came from (I think I found it on this site).
This should give you guys a decent understanding on what needs to be done. The temporary kitchen is on PPCGeeks. If you guys aren't a member there, I suggest you become one It will be well worth your time.

Radioshack employee huh? I'm on the same exact plan and only because I work at Radioshack. You going to get the network card and the unlimited interent for just $30 a month too? That's what I'm using. Rev A really is quite a bit faster than Rev 0.

Hiya everybody!
I would love if someone could give me directions on where I can get good ROMs for flashing my brand new Artemis...
I'm brazilian, but I'm looking for a ROM in english with the best functions that people could get together....
I'm totally new to modding in here, tho I'm sorta pro in modding Motorola's MotoMING phone (my last one)
So if anyone could help me with directions of a newbie guide, I'd be glad....
I could write a newbie guide myself later on....when I lose the newbie status LOL
Check here for tips http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=362
There are also quite a number or ROMs in there too.
Although I would definately recommend this one.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=365312 .. great speed, very light so you can add all your own apps and customize it how you like. Generally speakingm, after flashing alot of ROMs to my Orbit, I tend to stick with Meschle's ROMs and usually stick to his latest Vanilla. Although as I say there are alot of others, depends what your looking for from the ROM.
Any other questions Id be glad to help. I also have quite a collection of prgrams n customiations n stuff if your looking anything.
Thanks a lot for the hand!
It surely will come handy! I got the USPL to go over the CID locking system....
The carrier problem can be solved by the carrier itself, at least nowadays.....
To tell the truth, I'm in need of some tutorials on the best programs to have, what kind of stuff fits well in it...
I work with game design, and I'm starting to develop on python....I was wondering if there is anyway to run python programs in it too...
Last but not least, how much knowledge is necessary to work with Artemis?!?!!? LOL
Hmm unfortunately I dont do programming n such, i think you probably be better off asking those questions in the artemis developement / hacking section
If you were to develop Pocket PC applications, you may use eVC (free) or VS2005/8 (more expensive)
No idea about pythons.
How much knowledge? Probably nothing or as much as it is needed to read english. All you need is to experience and experiment to learn.
Regards,
Carty..
@fubofo
Thanks for answering again, man! I know that not everyone is a fan of programming stuff....
I got the ROM you said you were using and I'm gonna flash it today...hope it works and I don't end with a 15 hundred bucks brick....
@Carty
When I said knowledge, I ment time spent studying stuff made for it and etc...but still the ability to read english is way too complex for some people in my country....
I'll take a look at the eVC and see what can be done in it....
I have Eclipse's SDK and Visual Studio 2008 here....any of them is good for it?
Hi

OK! Let me see, i have to buy some Lotto this weekend and give you sure a beautiful villa. If i win the millions lotto.
You can always dream even further...
i just need a new Doctor
well after seeing the new Dr. Who episode, all I can wish for now is:
CAN I PLEASE HAVE TOM BAKER BACK?
a trillion thanks for the new 'Quantum Genie' rom Tai, now my jasjam can boil water! Battery life not so good though, and I got a weird headache + blurry vision.
Can you guys, please not spam and reply gently if you really know?
I mean jesus christ, if you don't want to help then it's fine. But don't make fun.
Simply amazing how this makes sense... this guy ask onmy rom thread something like a bricked device... but it seems that old guys here that are always helping some time to date... are blofing like this... its a shame ppl...
Just limitate to answer if you want to laugh about newbies you know where you can do it...
lol
shame on you +Que , it's fun to laugh at people who can't even read the sticky's. I don't think that's mean at all. We all wish there was a magic-wishing tree.
BUT - to answer the original question, I have gone back to CRC's rom for stability, but experimental downports of newer ROMs from newer devices are done by +Que and TAI at the moment. Note that these roms are stripped and downported in the hope that they work ok and use a less memory. Read the stickies, then their threads, flash HardSPL, and then read read read more and more and more... Honest answer!
