New storage card, transfering old data... - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

I'm upgrading my storage card to 4gb. Most programs, program files, messaging, dlls, data, links, etc are on my 2gb storage card. When I install the new card, will the shortcuts remain the same; will the programs and links remain intact when I migrate to the new card? I REALLY don't want to reinstall all those programs and move all that data again.
thanks for any advice...

I presume that you are running WM5 or WM6? If so, you should copy ALL the files on the current card to the new larger capacity one.... Yes.
Done it myself... I cannot think of any gotchas.
You can miss out personal data files if you want to save space and if you are willing to swap back to the old card to pick them up and use them. For example, if you have created another My Documents folder containing your personal documents or pictures, music files etc. Anything that is required to start up or run a program should be left in place. All the short cuts should work just fine.

Thanks for the tip. Worked OK. I just copied all the files from my old card to my PC and then from the PC to the new card. The device and all the programs read the new card just like the old one (for those who have the same question in the future).

Need help with HTC 3300 ran out of ram memory

The problem is that there is not enough available free space for correct work of win. mobile OS. Each time I reboot my phone, the greetings message appears, it also appears when I browsing in menu, trying to change settings. What should I do if there is no additional processes in progress besides Calendar, Messages or Contacts? I have only 700 kb free and remaining 41,3 mb are used. I thought that adding 2 gb flash micro sd card would solve my problem, but it still exists.
Thank you all.
I'll wait for your advices and suggestions.
Try to uninstall some programs (like today plugins and etc)
they use your memmory.
Adding a 2GB memory card isn't like just adding more memory to your PC - the phone treats the memory card as separate memory, not just an extension of the existing. You need to actually move files from the device to the card, remove programs and re-install them to the card instead of the device, set Pocket Outlook to save attachments to the memory card etc
But there is nothing to be uninstalled, cause there are only few programs, that were already in my phone when I bught it.
Should I clear a date storage? Then what will happen with my contact list and messages?
"Clear storage" will delete everything on your phone, including settings etc. It's similar to doing a hard reset.
If you've not got programs installed on your device, how much e-mail/contacts have you got stored on it?
where would i find today plugins etc to remove and then put on memory card,
and would i be better doin same with other folders like video, music etc , im new to the orbit so any advice is helpul thanks
Yes, always store stuff (docs, media etc) on the storage card; only use the phone memory when you REALY have to.
For your own stuff, use the built-in File Explorer and cut and paste all your files from "Documents" (or wherever you've saved them on the device) to the storage card.
As for programs/plug-ins, rather than just move them it's probably better to delete them and then re-install them, selecting "memory card" when it asks where you want to install them.
thanks for yr reply atleast i now know i can put most things on storage card. the onboard memory isnt that big and thats what confused me im use to havin a normal phone the orbit is all new to me thanks again for your help

Upgrading to a bigger MicroSD card

Sorry if this has been asked/discussed before but I couldn't find it or maybe I didn't know how to phrase the question.
With the exception of Garmin Mobile XT, when upgrading to a bigger MicroSDHC card, can you just copy and paste everything on the old memory card to the new memory card and just plug and play? As in, insert both cards to a PC and just select all (folders created for mail attachments, program files, videos, music, folders, etc) from say a 4gb card and just drag them to the new 16gb card. Will everything work ok in so far as programs that were previously installed on the old memory card, or folders created from apps in internal storage?
Thanks in advance to any help or if anyone can point me in the right direction.
Yeah, that should work just fine. Unless you have a program like Nav N Go iGO 8, which will only work on the SD card it came shipped on, you should be just fine. Though you should make sure that you have File Explorer set to show hidden files, and not to hide protected operating system files. That ensures that hidden files are also copied, some of which might be important to the programs on your SD.
garmin lets you copy over to a new card too.
thanks for information. much obliged
Yeah worked for me...I just upgraded from a 4GB to 8GB and copied everything over. No problems...
just as a small note about this thing. I made a copy of my card onto my computer when I changed cards from 4-8gig. Man I am glad I did as my 8 gig card stopped working in my Kaiser and was basically useless.
I got a new card and copied all the saved stuff over to new card and voila it all works again. This little step saved my a$$ as I had backups, tons of apps and cabs ect on the card. I am sure I could have got them all again, but I did not have to and I am so glad.
We all, or should, back up our phones but I will venture to say not many back up the cards. Now once a month I copy card to pc so its current, just in case. Old computing axiom: Its not if it will fail but rather when it will fail.

MicroSD Swapping Question

I was wondering:
I have a 1GB microSD currently, but I just ordered a 16GB. Now I have the newest .net framework installed on the device, but everything else (mainly advanced config. tool, reg. editor, divx player, etc.) is installed to the memory card. Will it mess up the phone to just switch out the card and reinstall these programs? or should I make a complete backup of the phone and put in the new card? I'm really lost here and would appreciate any advice.
copy all files from existing sdcard to your computer. then simply transfer them back to the new sdcard using a card reader. or, use your phone to transfer if you have no card reader.

First make sure you format the new SD then just copy all to new SD, no reinstalling of programs necessary
One caveat is that some software can actually be tied to the ID of the SD card upon install (i.e. Garmin) and thus can't just be copied over and still work. But those are the exceptions.
as kierandill mentioned, some apps are tied to the ID of the SD card and would require you to re-enter your registration code.
But i've swapped SD cards many times and haven't faced any issues and all i did was simply copy all the files from one card to the other.

[Q] Loads of folders on SD Card, which do i need??

Hi All,
I want to have a clear out of my sd card as it seems to have alot of data on it which isnt any of my media (music, pics, vids etc.) I do try out loads of apps and games so it could be filled with old useless files.
I was just wondering if there are any files/folders on there which i should definately back up to restore after a format? For instance what folder are all the titanium backup files? I will obviously be backing up all of my own media files.
Could someone also let me know which format to use when re formatting a sd card? Im using Virtuous Unity (latest) if that makes any difference.
Also is there any special procedure to follow when doing a format or is it simply back up files/folders you want to keep, format sd card, restore backed up files/folders?
Thanks in advance!

I did it like that,,, copy and paste folders to your HDD and back.
Format of the SD Card should alway be FAT32 ... dont know really much about the folders, but you may check if some old apps, that are not in use created folders (like call recorder creates that "voix" folder, etc)

Thanks again!

how to transfer SD to new one?

With some programs installing partially to external SD card, how do I transfer them when I upgrade it to bigger size, when system files are invisible? My data files are easy, I just copy them to my laptop and then back to the new card, but invisible system files?
Better yet, how do I make them visible on Win7 laptop, as this is really, really annoying me beyond belief. I could be thinking the card is empty and format it, when it could have whole bunch system crap on it. I really don't feel like reinstalling 100 or so programs again, some of them paid.
You can use adb to pull all files/folders from old sdcard to laptop and push them back to the new one.

There are no programs/apps which use the external sdcard by default for installation purposes.
Now if you are talking about Apps2SD that's a different story, but that's something which
YOU have initiated, the actual programs/apps by default install themselves entirely in the
internal memory of the phone.
Good luck!

That is absolutely not true. Just downloaded game ARC Redux, App info says 37 MB internal, 521 MB ext SD card, right after install and I have not changed any installation settings nor move to SD (is there a setting where programs should install? I know developer can allow program to install on SD or not, is there such option for user?). Worst comes to worse I'll instal ADB, but there must be easier way. I remember I had some program that would show all invisible files in windows, can't remember what was it, maybe it would work. I can't believe I'm the only one having this dilemma.
