Hello!
I am the bloodiest rookie ever!
I have searched this and other forums but couldn't find anything solving my problem:
I got a Blue Angel from a friend for testing it for 2 weeks. I want to check out newer ROMs, install some proggs and so on.
Here is my question:
How can I backup everything, test anything I want to and "re-backup" before giving the Blue Angel back to my friend?
:?: :!: :?:
thanks a lot and greetings from frankfurt / germany
doncorso
Take a look at sprite backup - for data
If you search the forum there are links to Rom backup utils
You could also try Sunnysoft Backup Manager. It works well, even with WM5, in case you're going to try a WM5 ROM upgrade, whereas Sprite Backup doesn't.

Hi, lastnight i upgraded my radio from .03 to .09 and it worked perfectly, as normal i had to make sure the phone was in bootloader mode to make t work, i got the files from this sites FTP server, XDA-Developers site is all you need!
Thank you to everybody that gives there views and advice freely!
P.S i got Pocket plus to install after i did another hard reset, phewwww
Don't want to sound stupid but ...
.. is upgrading your ROM an easy thing to do for a non teckie ?
Do you need to hard reset etc etc. ?
Is there a guide out there ?
Don't wanna take the plunge and mess things up. I've got loads of software and tweaks on my SPVM5000 - will Sprite Back up re-install with a new ROM. I'm also on 1.13.49 same as jab1a.
Hello All,
If i replace my xda exec rom to orange rom, it will be locked?
Another question, where can i get the radio rom 1.09 to flash the orange rom?
Thank you,
racerx
Hi Rick GM,
the ROM upgrade is pritty easy and the Radio update is aswell, everything you need to know or might not need to know about the update is in the WiKi and forum. its real easy.
As for backups, im not sure how this works but for good measure before i did the upgrade i did a FULL backup, then i did a non-rom backup (i.e i just backed-up the things i had installed on the m5000) then i did a PIM and message backup (note: i only ever have problems with a restore when i decide to restore the messages databases so unless you realy need to i would only backup the PIM(contacts) database). I think if you tryed to do a full backup and then do the upgrade and then restore the full backup you might run into a few errors or incompatability. it only takes about 30mins to do the update and about another 20mins to re-install all your software and then the rest of your life to get all the setting you want just right! lol
I am sure you will do fine, after all this is the best site in the world for PPC so im sure someone here would be able to help you if it all goes pear shaped
Moved thread from news section
Thanks for that jab 1a
I haven't taken the plunge yet but it's coming !
I think your 20 minutes to re-instal software is a bit optimistic even if all goes well. I reckon it will take me an hour plus to sort out all the cr*p that I've got on my device. (I keep a copy of everything but some's on my home PC and some at work).
I'll update you when I finally pluck up courage / find the time.
BTW - I'm only going to do it because you can. Isn't that what these devices are all about ?

Well I upgraded with the ROM from the Orange site (1.30.90) - no problem. That's good news.
Sprite Backup V5.1 is newly released this week and boasts cross ROM/Device backup capability after capturing your old ROM in .sbu file immediately after hard reset and prior to ROM upgrade.
It hasn't worked - it won't recognise my .sbu file (Invalid Upgrade File) or words to that effect so it looks like a slog to put everything back on (unless Sprite can restore (no pun intended) my faith in them and come up with an answer. Might have a go at the Radio Rom next.
I have the new ROM from Qtek into my Universal. Is it worth the upgrade to this new Orange ROM?
best regards,
Deiota

Sprite really screwed up here.
When they released 5.1, they re-introduced their killer rom upgrade proof restore feature. It even works for the new self-extracting restores. How cool is that?
Now, today, I had to have my SPV M5000 replaced (same model) because of a screen problem, and knew the replacement would be AKU2, so I purchased Sprite 5.1 to back up with. I looked around all the different pages I could find showing how to use Device Upgrade Mode. All had links to the same GetUpgradeData.exe. So, even though I had that nagging developers' intuition that this must be wrong, I assumed it was the right version. I only had twelve hours to puchase, get the file down, and do all the backup stuff.
Then I exchanged devices with the courier. (Orange care is great (mostly!)). However, when I tried to restore, what a surprise: "Invalid Upgrade File". Checked back on Sprite Site - ONE page out of the five or six links to GetUpgradeData2005.exe. Howl !!!! :x
Can someone please post an UpgradeData.sbu, from a clean vanilla Pre-AKU2 M5000, dumped with the new GetUpgradeData2005.exe, otherwise someone at Sprite is just gonna have to die. Lots.
Many, Many thank yous in advance!
Update: Sprite have kindly offerred to provide an sbu for 1.13.53 WWE.
Unfortunately, as best as I can remember, mine Rom was 1.13.49 WWE.
Can anyone please tell me of an identifying characterstic by which I dould have distinguished the two versions (bearing in mind - I don't have the device any more), or even better an upgrade file (sbu) for 1.13.49 WWE?
Mutant
I too used the GetUpgradeData.exe as advised by Sprite. After registering my problem they advised me to use the GetUpgradeData2005.exe and sent me a copy. Unfortunately I'd already upgraded the ROM so didn't have the .sbu pre upgrade. I've since got a clean 1.13.49 from a colleagues Orange SPV M5000 but the backup still didn't work. Sprite recognised the .sbu but just messed up the device (after partially restoring) requiring several hard resets. If you want the .sbu, I think I've got it stored somewhere. Let me know.
Hi!
sorry, if i´m in the wrong thread and please excuse my english :?
i´ve got a "n00b" question concerning the branding of a MDA Pro/QTek 9000/HTC Universal.
Please correct me if i´m wrong:
The branding is performed after a hardreset and can be interuppted via a softreset after rebooting.
the branding also includes the network parameters for UMTS/GPRS/MMS/SMS/etc...
Is there a *.CAB file where all these configuration information is stored?
if not - how is the configuration done?
why i´m asking this:
i want to update my ROM, but i don´t want to enter all configs by hand...
Thanks in advance for your help
there is indeed a cab file for this
i dont know which one it is for your provider... i only know which one it is for the dutch t-mobile settings
you could find wich one it is:
1) copying the current extended rom to your SD card
2) hard reset and soft reset before the custimazation or update to new rom (incl. extended rom)
3) start the 1st cab file and install
4) check if settings are made
5) go to step 3 and use the next cab file, until you found the one that does the correct settings you want.
6) use it in the new rom (put it in extended rom or keep it in SD card)
alternatively you could install the new rom without the extended rom
[edit]
gprs and mms probably have different cabs, they do in the t-mobile rom, so search till you know which cabs you want
hi bartjan!
thanks for your reply. i also got t-mobile. could it be that there is a naming convention for the files ?
do you know which one(s) did it for you?
i want to get the brand out of the MDA - thats the main reason why i want to flash. would it make sense then to flash without the ext_ROM ?
thanks
cab-customization-tmnl-universal-01-03-04aug05.cab
signed_uni_tmonl_conn_112101.cab
signed_uni_tmonl_set_111101.cab
these are the ones i use for my tmnl (T-Mobile NetherLands) settings
one is for my internet, one for MMS and i dont remember what the tird one for is. dont remember which does which also
if you want the brand out you shouldnt flash without the extended rom indeed.
you could remove the extended rom in this rom (and keep warranty) or flash entirely and use a better and faster rom with aku2 and a2dp support if needed.
Depends also on which bits of branding you want to get rid of.
First, there's the physical printings of tmobile on the alu plate and next to the screen and keyboard. The one on the alu plate can allegedly be removed with a sugarcube without damaging the alu underneath, but that doesn't work for the others.
Second, there's the "t-mobile" screen that pops up as, as it were, the BIOS screen, which is a special part of the OS rom and which you can change using some utilities found around here. Comes up before windows is booted, and then it will get the rom version superimposed on it, and only then you move on to the next bit:
The t-mobile screen while windows is booting, which is also part of the OS ROM (I think) but in the regular filesystem somewhere (?).
Then fourth there's the t-mobile 'theme', pink and white everywhere and a special today screen. That can be turned off in settings>today. The actual presence of the theme is again in OS rom, but the extended rom as its first action actually turns it on. You can easily edit that out of the config.txt in the extended rom if you want (it's the exec cusTSK.exe line).
Then there's the t-mobile Today screen plugin with the 5 icons. Not entirely sure when that comes on. I think it should be extended rom but I can't find it in any of those cabs. Experiment.
And then there's a whole load of other subtler stuff.
hi!
many thanks for the replies!
going to sync. my mda tomorrow - maybe the files are the same (except the language part)
removing the branding on the plates doesn´t interest me 8)
just software branding is what i get rid of.
going to get the qtek rom (1.3x.xx) but first of all i have to check which bootloader i got. don´t know at the moment.
thanks for the tips removing the "branding screens and themes" maybe i´ll need it for the qtek rom?!
i would like the rom because of speed, i don´t want to listen to "stereo" music via bluetooth and at the moment i don´t need push email (especially looking at the battery times when using it)
thanks and have a nice day
The Qtek rom doesn't have numbers 3, 4, and 5, just number 2 (except that it says QTEK, of course), but that's relatively easily rectified and also a fairly minor problem, given that it only shows up for 10 seconds or so, only after a reset.
thanks!
didn´t have time this weekend to sync. maybe i´ll get it this week.
thanks for the replies!

Hi all - sorry about this, but I'm new to this. Got an Orange M700 - still running the original Orange branded WM5 OS: yup, Orange have mangled it. I've been reading the (many...many...many) threads and the wiki and... well I think I'm more confused than ever.
So, just wondering if someone can advise me on the best route to upgrade, and bear in mind I'm a graphics guy....
So, briefly
from the Orange WM5, is there a straight one-step upgrade to WM6?
What .cabs/versions should I be looking for? -> I know there are many you guys have tuned. I guess I'm looking for a fairly standard one? Unless you think otherwise!
Are there any major caveats (other than warranty/support invalidation)?
Need a little hand-holding...
Thanks in advance.
Hi, welcome..
I have M700 too, took the plunge a while back and loaded one of Mun's ROM's.
All I did was install activsync onto my pc and hook up the phone for the first time, once that ran its course I unplugged the phone powered down and removed the sim & sd card and then powered back up again.
Once up n running I plugged it back into the pc and ran the rom I had chosen, yes I was worried it might go wrong but I have to say it was and is very simple n straight forward. There is a WM5 Orange backup rom on here so if you ever did need to send back then you can flash this back onto the phone so it "looks" normal, tbh I'd doubt it would come to that.
I was using XP-SP2 at the time, not sure of anything different for Vista but that's where others here will put you straight, since then I have altered rom many a time and finally settled for Tom's Black'n'Blue - nice and fast and room to add what I want to add rather than be given. Oh and also update the radio rom to the latest version too, pretty much the same method.
Have a look at the roms and decide what you want Happy modding...
Only "gotcha" try and flash from XP, it is rumored to be problematic on a vista PC.
Also be warned flashing ROMs can be addictive, think i have tried 8 or 9 on my Trinity to find one i like, have yet to try the MUN one suggested in the previous post, looks like it will be next.
Ah, twas an early Mun rom and was WM5 - like I said the very first rom I'd flashed so I wouldn't flash to that now
Also realised why i hadn't tried it, i have tried several 6.1 ROMs and none of the WM6 ones. Probably will now i think about it though.
spv m700
Just joined the forum, thought I'd say hi.
I've just bought an spv m700 (following 2 years of the great spv m600), mainly because I wanted inbuilt gps.
The previous owner flashed it with Windows Mobile 6.1, I've yet to really test it.
First of all, I'm going to re-install all my Spb software (spb time, spb backup, spb mobile shell, etc) and transfer contacts etc via active sync.
If anyone has any advice or tips n tricks that you feel may benefit me, I'm all ears.
Cheers,
Matt.

First of all, welcome!
You have to know that the key to knowledge is searching, reading, and if none of those work, asking through posting!
So, happy enlightment and enjoy your device!
OK Monkeybox - hold out your hand - here's mine.
First thing - choose a ROM (sorry, you'll need to make your own choices). Judging by what you have said a LITE ROM would suit your needs.
I have tried most trinity ROMS. I like ADW's ROMs, am currently on Akeo's ROM but have tried LVSW, mUn, black and blue, PDAVIET, FInixNOver, ervius etc etc etc (Sorry if I've tried and forgotten your ROM!). Once you have your ROM, you should unlock the phone
1. (Hard-SPL - Service Providor Lock). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299659 This will enable you to flash a ROM with different carrier ID to you SPV M700. OK - Once you have hard-spl'd your phone, find the RUU (Rom Update Utility) exe file within the ROm that you downloaded.
2. Connect your phone (windows XP is best) using activesync and when activesync is connected, run the RUU Updater. The phone will switch off and go into "bootloader" (coloured bars on screen). If you get a connection error here, just run the RUU updater again. this time things should get going. When finished - your new ROM is installed - no more Orange!
3. Next update the Radio - search xda-developers.com using google for Trinity Radio - and choose 1.46 or 1.5x.
4. Install missing software (generally you'll need a GPS navigation software at least).
5. Enjoy.
6. If you like a ROM - donate to the cooker
7. Get a flashing addiction
8. Read all of the Kitchen threads
9. Cook your own ROM
10. Share it with us

Thank you, and all others who have responded, for your greatly appreciated advice! I've been trying to get my head around the process. Have backed up using PIM backup and settings saviour... and with your hand holding, am about to dive into the world of modding!
It's a little daunting for a newbie (and I really do mean a newbie!), but with everyones help, and this fantastic community as a resource, bah, watch me fly! (I'll probably be back tomorrow asking how I can de-brick the phone ;O) )
Thanks again all.
Cool. Upgraded to WM6.1 - Akeos latest black one.
Have to say the functionallity is 10 times better already. Upgraded to the latest radio too.
HOWEVER... and this is where the newbie kicks in, I can't seem to start any data sessions. IN COmm manager I don't have the option to turn the data connection on (this was also the same prior to the radio upgrade)
Don't suppose anyone knows how to resolve this do they?
As I say, taking my first steps on the modding ladder, and it appears I may have slipped...

You have to define your data connection from "Start, Settings, Connections, Connections, My ISP, Add new" according to your carrier (ie GPRS, 3G). Same goes to configuring MMS, just that you do it at "Start, Settings, Connections, Connections, My Work Connection" and you also have to define it in Arcsoft MMS.
You will not be able to start them from the CommManager as they connect on demand as needed, but you can STOP the in the CommManager when they are connected since they don't disconnect automatically.

Once more, thanks to all who've helped me over the threshold - the data connection must have been an issue with the signal, as this morning it was happy to connect to mms/internet via 3G/GPRS and HSDPA (which I didn't even know Orange supported).
Cheers all. Your help has been absolutely spot-on. It's refreshing to come to a community where you not only happy to help newbies, without the usual sarcasm or pomposity you find elsewhere, but you do so in a clear and concise way that really does help.
Thanks all. Look what you've gone and started now... !!!

have fun with your spv
I have a problem, and the more I search the forums, the more I worry it may be due to an upgraded Rom.
The original owner of the spv m700 I just bought has by the looks of it debranded it and installed WM 6.1:
Device name: HTC_P3600i
Model NO: TRIN100
Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional
ROM version 3.03.751.5
ROM Date: 04/01/08
Radio Version: 1.16.00.00
Protocol Version: 32.53.7018.01H
With Tomtom 6 installed and seemingly working, the GPS receiver is not being detected. I have done what the forums say, i.e. selected "NMEA GPC receiver", get a screen with:
COM3: GPS in COM9
COM7: RIL on COM6:
S2410 IRDA
I have clicked on the first option (COM 9 is recommended), but still no GPS device found, indoors or out, after 10 minutes of trying
Like I say, much info says the above should solve it, but others say an upgrade can knock out the GPS and it needs to have a different ROM reinstalled. Never done this before, and there may be an easier solution?
Help anyone.... please.......?!
I'm not 100% sure but I think your radio rom needs upgrading to support GPS - I'm sure the one's that do have 11 at the end of them..
Really?? It would be great to finally reach a soultion!
Can someone verify if this is true and if so, what do I have to do??
Thanks.
Hi Monkey Boy and all.
I think I'm in a similar situation that you were...
The original owner of my new spv m700 debranded it, unlocked it (by flashing an old radio ROM) installed WM 6.1. I now fear that the reason tomtom detests no GPS device is because the radio may need updating too... (see below for the spec on my phone at the moment).
Have you discovered which is the best radio to update to?
Device name: HTC_P3600i
Model NO: TRIN100
Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional
ROM version 3.03.751.5
ROM Date: 04/01/08
Radio Version: 1.16.00.00
Protocol Version: 32.53.7018.01H
All advice and recommendations welcomed. I have never flashed anthing before so this is all new to me, but I like to think I learn fast...
Thanks,
Matt

Original owner would have done this to unlock it, so all you have to do is search for the latest radio rom and flash that to your phone - there are guides how to do this in here..

Hey Trixter.
Thanks for the reply.
I managed to get in touch with the original owner and he sent me a link to an an .exe file which I downloaded, ran whilst activesynced to my phone, and voila! I now have radio ROM 1.50.08.11. Tomtom 6.03 now successfully works using settings "other NMEA GPS receiver" with "GPS baud rate 115200" and "GPS in Com9"!
I'm a novice and bought the phone as a "pimped up" spv m700. But I'm learning loads since joining thanks to people like your good self answering posts, so thanks.
Matt
Thanks to seeing your signature I'm sorted! If you read anyone else with the same problem, I hope my experience helps them.
Thanks again for your time,

Hi Guys,
I installed the Hard SPL as instructed in page 1 of the tutorial, as I intend to put on the newest official ROM. In boatloader it shows its installed. However, after the new HardSPL was installed (which seemed to install very quick ) the bettery will now only last a rediculous 6 ish hours! Without any use!
Do I need to install a new ROM to fix this? My bettery was about 60% charged when the new SPL was installed, after it showed 100%
Im currently on : -
Rom version - 1.93.405.1 WWE
Rom Date 08/06/08
Radio Version - 1.00.25.03
What the newest officail ROM I can install?
Thanks for any help as Im having to charge all day
try discharge the full battery and then fully charge. This should take your battery back. Then use normal for some days and report here again.
Hi, I have also noticed this...
I put HardSPL 1.40 Olinex and then installed Cloudys 1.1b ROM,
Since I did this at the weekend, I have noticed my battery life has been reduced quite dramatically... But I'm not sure if it's the HardSPL or the ROM!?!?!
Anyone got any ideas???
HardSPL cant be a battery drain since it only used when you turn on the phone or are in bootloader mode.
Some roms have memory leaks that affect the battery performance but I dont belive this is the case.
In my opinion you are suffering from a strange "battery memory" problem (ok I know ion-lithium batteries shouldnt have this). As I said try to fully discharge and then charge complete.

I experienced extreme battery drain with certain HSPL and ROM combinations. After upgrading to Unsigned HSPL 1.93 I decided to go back to 1.40 as I never had battery issues with 1.40 in any ROM.
AZTOR's X2 and SchaksP 3.2 with HSPL 1.93 chewed up the battery quickly.
I am now on UDK R3 with HSPL 1.4 without ant battery issue.
Thanks Guys,
I'll give the battery a full drain and recharge - see if that works... If not I may have to try a different ROM.
Cheers for the help guys.
I'm new to all this so you will have to bare with me
Is there a thread that shows benifits/ drawbacks of each ROM? looking through them all is sooooooo confusing.
There aren't any benefits or drawbacks to any of the ROMS as they are 'user specific'... So what could be a drawback for one person, may be a benefit to another user!
Be careful how you ask about ROMs as soooo many times the question has been asked - 'Which ROM is better?' no-one will answer this!
The best way to find out which is better for you... is to have a go and try one, if you don't like it, try another untill you find one which suits your needs best.
Hope this helps
OK cheers mate.
Hard SPL 1.40 here and running Shaks.P v4.00 ROM
I noticed that my battery is draining very quickly as well.
Using radio 1.09.25.23
Anyone else?
Use any of the 1.12/1.13 SU radios.
Very good battery life, as well as good GPS fix times.
The best I've seen till now.
It totally depends on what rom are you using...Just try different Radios or Ask in your rom's thread for the best radio. For example the best one with Nataly v2.1.1 is the Radio 1.08.25.20
I dont think HardSPL has anything to do with battery drainage. you should look out for Radio and the ROM you are using instead.

I upgraded to 1.09 radio and used it a long time before the official version came out with ROM 2.3 and never had an issue with Unsigned Olinex 1.40 on any ROM. As soon as I upgraded to Olinex 1.93 the battery got hot and lost it's charge rapidly in combination with SchaksP 3.2 and AXTOR X2. I decided to go back to Olinex 1.40 and Udk's Syrius HD for a long time (never changing Radio 1.09).
However, I did not test all combinations possible to clearly identify the culprit. I still need the phone for work
Maybe this answered my question re battery issues. I have noticed that after I have flashed my diamond, the battery would last just a couple of hours for GPS use even with a charger. I have tried a number of ROMs and they are all about the same.
after you install the hardspl your phone is hard reset. from what i have seen it takes a while for the phone/WM to figure out how to use the battery to its full capacity again.
I'd say give it a few days and it should correct itself?
