Hi, just have found solution about how to change the USB mode (from ActiveSync to DiskDrive and vice-versa) without having to unconveniently unplugg and re-plug the cable.
The application to call is "\Windows\HTCUSBToPCPopUp.exe", so just create yourself a shortcut to it, and voila

The GUI usually auto-popup and stay for 5 seconds whenever you connect the usb cable. You can select the mode (within 5 sec) or the last mode would be auto selected after the timeout. ... Like in Nokia phone.
once again, nothing todo with ROM Development!

Bro.. the idea is to get the GUI without re-plugging in the cable.
Good tweak, czbird. Got mine as a shortcut already!

which rom did you try to flash on it?
if you plug it into the PC does the PC load (or try to load) some USB drivers for the phone? (not activesync)

It stayed blank even after performing a hard reset. (did it blind folded)
Any solutions?!

sorry, then it's really dead, i.e. either the hardware is totally broken or in the best case you need JTAG to fix it. no software based solution possible at this point

Hi everyone, I just managed to get my completely stock Xoom updated via USB host-cable... some instructions:
REQUIRED:
USB HOST CABLE
FAT32 USB THUMB DRIVE
3G Instructions:
1) Place the update.zip (can have any filename you like) on the usb stick.
2) Connect the USB stick to the host cable and connect the host cable to the Xoom.
3) Power off
4) Power on, tap (ONLY TAP) volume down a few times until you get a list of options you can cycle through.
5) Select Android Recovery
6) Tap Volume up to boot into recovery
7) Hold power and tap volume up at the green android screen to get the BLUE recovery menu
8) Select apply update from USB drive
9) Select your update.zip from the menu... enjoy!
As for the 3.1 Update, if you get into a boot loop, just hold power and volume up to get out of it.
WIFI ONLY USERS:
There is no menu option for android recovery, you'll need to use:
adb reboot recovery
you can plug in the usb stick at the green android guy screen
good stuff, wish i had a host cable

Im assuming its the same, but he tested it on a wifi i think

How about if we don't have the Host cable?
Anyone searching for a cheap host cable can find one here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00474OYLG . It also ships pretty fast.

Can anyone suggest a USB host cable? There's plenty of USB micro to USB female cables on Amazon, and I really can't tell them apart. I'd prefer something with Amazon Prime, but the smaller the converter the better...
Thanks!

I got a random $2 one from ebay, I think it shipped from china. It MUST be a HOST cable, not a converter.

Thanks, I realize that some of them work, I just can't figure out which is which. Can you provide a link or did you just get lucky with the one you got? Nothing on amazon makes it clear which is which...

I'm trying this out right now but I'm not getting Android Recovery as an option. I plugged the stick in, powered it on, tapped the down rocker and I get 3 options: NvFlash, RSD, Fastboot. What could be wrong here. I'm on a stock WiFi Xoom.
This would only work on 3g, as wifi only doesn't have a boot to recovery option in the choices.

You can try
adb reboot recovery
But you need to plug in the usb stick right away or it won't recognize it.
The very first option when tapping volume down should be recovery

Bought the 'official' usb to usb3 lead from the Play store. When I tried connecting to my Macbook Pro the Android File Transfer can't find the Nexus. I thought it might be the USB Debugging needs enabling so I did that. Nope. Maybe the Android File Transfer needed updating so updated it. No joy. I'm a bit lost now, can anyone shed any light on my problem?
Mine would say something about the screen being locked even though it wasn't.. When you plug it in, pull down the notification drawer and tap the Choose More USB Options, or whatever it says. Make sure File Transfer is selected and try again.. took mine a few times of switching between FTP and Charging but it works with my Mac now

Ok, thanks, I'll try switching between MTP and charging a few times like that.
I have no trouble. Have a 2012 MBP using El Capitan.

More thanks. I had to switch it between charging and MTP 5 times to get it but it worked in the end.
Is there any way to making the MTP setting sticky for trusted devices? When you connect with usb debugging, it asks you to verify and save the device. If something like that was possible with this setting, you could have the security of not auto enabling when charging from random devices but the convenience when connected to your own remembered computer.
This solved my problem!

Hello, I have problem with USB connection.
When the phone is connected to the computer, the phone starts charging but the notification of the choice of file transfer, charging, etc. does not pop up. The computer pops up message that the device is not working properly.
In fastboot mode, the same message pops up and you can hear the repeated sound of the connected device until the phone is restarted.
The headphones on the adapter and OTG do not work either.
I tried different cables so it's probably not that, I also replaced the bottom board with a USB port but also no effects.
Could this be due to damage on the motherboard? How could I change rom without usb? I have uploaded MIUI alpha 8.5.31
You can try edl mode and if that doesn't work too that maybe a hardware problem

Hey. I read about such problems on one of the Polish forums, and from what I know helped to clear the usb socket on the phone. Maybe it's stupid and will not help but it's worth trying

I think if I do a hard reset, maybe the phone reinstall the drivers knowing the new usb board.
Have you solved it?

Clean your usb port with say a sewing needle. The USB port is metal. And silver in bottom. If it's black or any other color it's got lint packed in it. I see this day in day out and is a common occurrence on type c ports

Send a close up picture. Everyone tells me it's clean. They cleaned it. Normally they don't. Flashing from pc ? Wouldn't that indicate a USB problem as well?

When you plug in to pc, phone should pop up a prompt asking if you want to allow the pc to access phone. Keep phone screen on and look for message at bottom of screen asking for access.
You could also check in developer settings under Default USB configuration and make sure its not set to Charging

I know all of this bro! I flash phones everyday! This is new to me. Someone was talking about this in another thread that a bugged software caused this problem and damaged USB port's d-/d+ points. Now i don't have much knowledge on hardware.
Only flashing a software will fix this
