i saw on a fourm it's said
the 838pro does have a GPS reciever but doesnt have a GPS antenna ... their are reports of successful attempts of soldering a GPS antenna but this will void the warranty
is it true?

total waste of time, the ammount of shorts put onto the chip by HTC shows there never was any intention of allowing it to be easy....you are VERY likely to kill the thing before getting anything working.

Ive been writing some experimental software that relies on GPS. It will run on standard PCs, not mobile phones. GPS isn't just for positioning. It also gives you a VERY accurate clock. I use my bluetooth GPS on both my laptop and my desktop all the time.

I don't know how the map data is for where you are, but I run Garmin Mobile 10 XT for me here in the States. It's pretty nice and for only about $100 US. For that you get the GPS reciever, the maps and the software, and it's all prertty easy to use. Not too bad compared to some of the all in one units that cost up to $300...I use this every day and with all the POI's i use it all the time just for phone numbers and to see where a place is. I love how it lets you click the number to call it. 2009 maps are supposed to be out in a couple weeks.

gps built in to universal?

I was reading all I could about my phone, since I bought a non working one from ebay, and when I read the info about the qualcomm 6250 chip it says that there is a gps receiver built into the chip. I'm wondering if anyone has thought about what it would take to get this gps engine working. For instance is anyone working on the linux version trying to get the gps up and running?
Furthermore I ran across this post
http://www.theunwired.net/?itemid=3756
Is it possible that htc will enable the gps engine in an update for the universal? These may be newb questions, and if so sorry about that, but if I can save $85 on a bt gps receiver, I figure it's worth asking. Lemme know what you people know/think about this.
As far as i know the Universal does not have a hardware gps receiver and will not be able to ever pick up a gps positioning signal because of this.
It's true that in atleast one HTC model there was a gps receiver in the chipset which was disabled at first due to driver issues, and later activated.
I'd buy the BT gps receiver
This has been debated in the past but the old threads seem to have been removed. There is apparently a suggestion that the Uni has limited GPS hardware but it has no GPS antenna so it could never be used.
According to Mamaich, the Universal *does* have GPS, but the unit is missing the necessary amplifier and antenna to make it work.
See this thread for details:

LOL. it has the gps processing software but
does not have the hardware LNA.
Very useful indeed.
My Universal now has built-in GPS!
@gliven: Yes, the Universal does have its own GPS hardware, but it is useless. However, you can try my mod below. My Universal now has built-in GPS! It was a lot easier than I had thought.
The Universal still works fine after the modification, even as a phone.
PS: use Blu Tack.
he he I appreciate..may we could try a smaller gps unit.
SiRF make a gps engine the size of a postage stamp (footprint) dunno if it'll fit into the case, if it could, wire it to the irda input, power, and get a micro patch antenna, hmmmm. It could work!!! well maybe not...

GPS for Tmobile wing?

Hey all, I did the ultimate no-no and bought a cheap, wired gps antenna off Ebay. It plugs in to my phone, and I get google maps to start, but I can't get the settings right for my gps to actually work. It keeps coming back telling me it can't locate satellites. I even go as far as to put the gps on the top of my car instead of inside to try, but it still won't work, no matter how clear the sky is, even if im in the middle of the parking lot with no buildings over a story nearby. im getting frustrated, and the guy I bought it from sent me here. so, im hoping somebody can help me out?
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120209369095
this is what I bought,so yeah. I'm hoping somebody knows more than I do, and im certain someone does.
If you look at the devices supported in the description the Wing/Herald/p4350 isn´t mentioned. The connector on the back of you device is for external phone antennas i e GSM/GPRS and nothing to do with GPS.
This antenna is only a GPS booster, your phone must have an internal GPSchip and the Wing doesn´t. (and the TyTN mentioned doesn´t either).
Use a bluetooth GPS reciever for you Tmobile Wing
Hey man, that sucks.
I do know for a fact though you can use the bluetooth function for a bluetooth GPS Reciever. I use it and it works beautifuly!!!! I've gone places I've never been too with mine, using google map, live search thats on the phone or you can download has a better maping service, its free too, tells you the gas rates near you too, good thing to have right now...but anyways...works super easy, no muss no fuss just connect like you would your bluetooth headset..just set the "external GPS" in your settings for hardware to com6 and whatever baud rate your GPS has to whatever it says your reciever has(in programs leave port to none, in "access" check the manage GPS and your good to go anywhere, also make sure google maps or live search gps settings match the com6 and baud rate. Need help ask me its cool I love the crap out of my phone its like a little laptop so friggin sweet. anyways
they sell em here, this is where I got mine.
http://www.buygpsnow.com/bluetooth-gps_9.aspx
the one I have is this one...
http://www.buygpsnow.com/OnCourse-B...o-OnOff)-(Your-Choice-of-Free-Mount)_896.aspx
Not very expensive either, I thought it would be.
I use mine to even track myself jogging, get my miles ran, how fast when I slowed down and all with Active Trace, you can download that, no maps but shows like the direction you went. but yeah bluetooth it, no wires put it in your pocket, dash whatever and go....
have fun
PS I only signed up on here cuase I was looking for accesories for my phone and ran across your post, figured I know how you feel and thought I'd help you out..

Try a different usb cable, different usb port, reboot pc and try a different pc. if none if these fix it it is the TP2 but to check if hardware or software you may need to do a hardreset.

dont have n e pix yet but its in really good condition. i have it in the silicon case bought from tmo and selling it with a 2gb micro sd. my father had a warrenty exchange right b4 he gave it to me. shoot me a pm if ur interested
This same exact thing happened to me on my Touch Pro 1. It just stopped working. I even called to get RMA info, but never got around to sending it back.
Then suddenly one day, it started working again. I have no idea why. One thing that I did notice though was that the contacts seemed to not work so well... like, if I pushed the cable to one side or another, I could get it to make contact... but eventually it started working just fine without any issues.
It's still one of the world's most compelling mysteries. It will unfortunately never be solved, since I have switched to a TP2.
Same exact issue as mine. I had to return mine. The new one worked perfectly. The reason I think mine went out was a 3rd party charger. Did you happen to use a 3rd party charger to charge your phone?

Desperately lost and at wits end

OK, since Sunday when the clocks went forward my SatNav has stopped working. It has worked flawlessly for the past year and I suspect my GPS reciever has stopped working. However, when I start up TomTom Navigator it tells me it is "waiting for a valid GPS signal"
I have already:
Soft reset my device
Hard reset my device
Reinstalled TomTom Nav
waited for over an hour for it to aquire the satellites
downloaded the latest Epherimis info from QuickGPS
What next?
I have to say that Google maps does not seem to find any satellites either.
I am at my wits end and without my SatNav I dont know how to get back to normal sanity

flash radio 1.14
flash topix 3.5.6
Hmm, by the fact that your location stats you're in Cambridge UK I'd say you've got a bit of an issue as the clocks don't change until 28th March!!!
Sorry, guys
I should have stated two more things
1. I am currentlu=y using Topix 3.5.6
with Radio 1.13
And I have been in the USA for the past month. I have tried all combinations of clock i.e.
putting clock back an hour
unchecking daylight saving in synchrotime so the time is -5GMT
By the way US clock went forward on 14/3/2010
as stated before googlemaps no longer finds satellites either.
Can anybody tell me if the radio for GPS is the same chip as all the other radio's or are they separate chips (seems to me they should all be on the same chip)
Updating your radio updates all radio functions (phone/wifi/gps/bluetooth etc).
I'm in the UK too and using radio 1.17 with no problems at all.
gonna flash stock and see if that works, always did before so should now. If not then I will know my GPS radio is toast!
will this work with a bluetooth gps unit by the way?
its been about 2 weeks now since my first post in this thread and nothing I have tried has fixed my GPS. My phone is over a year old now so I dont think its under warranty any longer. Do you guys think I can get it exchanged under my insurance in the UK (I pay something like £26 a qtr for insurance from CPW) or should I just hold tight and wait for my upgrade in September and use a bluetooth GPS receiver in the meantime?
I don't want to shell out for a new GPS since I already have maps for Europe, UK and north America that I spent over £200 on.
Thanks for all you help so far even though I found no solution so far. :-(
why not claim the faulty phone if youre sure its def a hardware fault.
sell the replacement
buy what u want

How to fix GPS on HTC ONE X , bouncing , and lock problems on satelits ( Tutorial )

For those who have problems with GPS on HTC ONE X i make a tutorial how to fix this.
This method work perfectly for me,and for other users.
If you are not scare to open your phone fallow this steps like in tutorial.
Method 1
1: open your phone to reveal what is inside
2: pull up those connectors shown in photo
3: close back
4: everifing is fix
Method 2
Instead of pulling up thouse pin ,use a soldering iron and put some soldering on the spot where pins touch the antena .
THIS WORKS BECOUSE AFTER THAT THE CONNECTOR APLY MORE PRESURE TO ANTENA AND NOW THE CIRCUIT IS COMPLETE
Hope this will fix all your problem with GPS, WIFI, Signal

I will mentioned the sky was clowdly and it was raining
I m not responsible if anything happens with your personal phone
This method worked perfectely for me
Excellent - this is the only thing that actually fixes this hardware issue.
I follwed your tutorial. Bought a pack of 5 plectrums off EBay for 99p to open the HOX like you did in the video.
Best 99p ever spent.
A lot better than sending phone away for 2 weeks only to hope it may be fixed.
Took 5 minutes, did it myself and don't lose all your data like you do sending it to HTC.
As I mentioned in another post, I had given up hope on my GPS, but didn't want to send off my One X due to root, custom ROM and stories of long waits without the phone actually being fixed.
This fix worked perfectly for me.
If you are having GPS problems and have the nerve, I suggest you try this.
Gabrielvl, thanks again.

Didn't really notice a difference for me (HTC One X Intl) and on top of that, i broke a wifi pin and damaged a network pin....
All seems to be working (GPS is still a bit weird), does anyone know if wifi will work properly on one pin and network on a slightly damaged pin?

You can try to soldering a wire from brocken pin to antena. If u can do that your problem will be fix. I know for sure becouse a friend happening the same like you and he fix with a wire
I dont have a soldering iron and i'm not gonna buy one just for a pin. I havent noticed any wifi problems, I still connect to 2.4GHz and 5Ghz and speed is still the same and with the network, its on 1 or 2 bars but i am inside and it usually is on that anyway and the GPS is not fixed, if anything, worse. But again, i am inside.

If it would work properly on one pin, thew would only have one pin to start with.

Soldering wires is not a good solution, they will act as antennae, which are a specific length tuned to the desired frequency.
Outside the gps was pretty good, the wifi is only one one pin and i notice no difference. GPS gets about 20 inside (used to be about 25-30) and outside i get about 35-40 (same).

OH GOD GUYS PLEASE STOP this is the same thing that I saw back in the Desire HD forums, and it ended poorly for pretty much everyone.
Do NOT try this unless you are out of warranty, the GPS antenna connectors are VERY thin and VERY weak, and it is VERY easy to SNAP them!
