Welcome to the club. Alot of people are complaining about this, yet the people who actually have a fix, have yet to post it. This thread will be locked cause its been "asked before". So before that happens, what i did was create a mail2web account and sync all my contacts thru their free exchange service. Works like a charm and it does it all for you on the fly as soon as you finish entering a contact on your phone.

I boot Windows maybe once every few months--and then only for a few minutes, plus I've never had sync trouble with WM6.1 under the Vista Home Premium I do have. I searched a little. Seems people with the same symptoms actually have different problems, so the fixes are different. Just saying "I upgraded and can't sync" isn't enough information to really go on.
Yes, this has been asked before (about five or six threads alone in the past couple months.) And yes, it has been fixed for many people. Just because a fix works for someone else doesn't mean it addresses your own personal problem, though.
Some possible fixes mentioned over the last two months or so:

This might be stating the obvious but just in case, you almost always have to remove your old pairing before it detects the new version. I try various rom versions often and mine has never paired if there is an existing pairing. You must delete the old pairing and let it detect and set it up all over again.
Once I did get two devices to show up but sync center didn't respond after that.
Also it should be stated that many times when deleting a pairing it doesn't actually go away and I must reboot in order for it to actually remove. If this happens and I don't reboot it stops doing its job but still responds to mouse clicks. I have tried restarting the services to no avail and seems only a reboot fixes.
My experience has been with my phone with about 6 different ROM versions and with my team's devices as I upgraded each one (~5 devices) and I found each one required me to remove the old pairing first and re-setup a new one each time.
Hope this helps,
Chris

Update active sync
Update to the newest active sync. If you have Vista, you have to go to windows mobile sharing center and sync it that way. It will set up your dash, until you go to the sync center, nothing will happen. Trust me, nothing.

Active Sync Stopped Recognising - help!!!

Active sync get on my nerves!
I've had a partnershhip set up at work which was woking fine - it's how i transferred over my contacts from my wizard. Anyway, it's just stopped working and i cant figure it out! Please Help!!!
I was using 4.1 so upgraded to 4.5 to see if it made a difference - nope.
I unticked the 'usb to pc' box to disable enahnced connectivity - nope.
I've had the same problems at home using vista's Mobile Centre thingy.
Basically it looks like it's trying to connect but doesn't manage to. I can only think there's a setting on the device that has changed somehow.
Oh, and i've disabled the firewall to see if that would make any difference. The fact that it doesn't work at home either implies it's not that problem anyway.
Advice please!!!!!!
Try .. Start Activesyn on phone manually and push the sync button manually (when USB connected to the PC).

Hi. I had tried this. Ended up getting so frustrated that i deleted my partnerships from pc and phone so now don't even have this option on the orbit.
When i connect the usb the active syn green arrows turn and it does say connecting - but in AS 5 it comes up with the troubleshooter. In vista it doesn't do anything at all!!!
Very frustrated!
oh.. and the local area connection show connected...
OK... so reinstalled AS 4.1 and now when I connect it is stuck on 'Connecting' ... hasn't stopped 'Connecting' for about an hour now!
Now i've noticed that windows now thinks this is 'windows mobile device #8' coming in at 'Local area connection 10' ... not long ago i;m sure it was connection 4 and i certainly don't have 7 more devices!!
help!
I had a similar problem on my new Asus laptop and it turned out to be a nasty little proprietary program called net4switch that was gumming up the works. I turned it off and now all's well. It's a long shot that you have an Asus but, on the other hand, you might check to see if a network connection proggy is hindering your connection.

Nope, no ASUS laptop. Don't think i have any network apps installed - although i had though maybe the work network was holding me back!
But then again, it did work when i first had it - at work and at home! Now, all of a sudden it doesn't sync anywhere! Very very annoying!
I'm really hoping i can avoid a hard reset!!
When I run into this problem, I unplug the phone and then reboot the computer.
After the computer has finished rebooting 100%, then everything works fine again.
try updating active sync to Version 4.5 - that's the offical advice and it wored for me
OK.. I've upgraded my work computer to 4.5 ... no joy so back to 4.1.
Anyway, got VISTA at home so main issue is there.
Realised it's GOT TO BE the phone now though. Decided I'd try to plug in my Wizard and see if i get the same problems. I didn't, IT WORKS fine!
Orbit still doesn't.... HELP!!
ok.. reluctantly hit those hard reset keys and to my delight everything now works...
... i'm thinking MAYBE that i may have overclocked too much - only went as high as 260 once - so am going to hang back from battery status until i hear it's safe.
Thanks for all your help!
I have had this problem before, solved it mainly by following advice here, its now back again have...
- reinstalled activ sync several times
- hard reset twice
- boxes checked and unchecked all the same result
however i did use it yesterday in the car and probably, thinking back, start the engine with the with unit plugged in and charging.
i have also tried soft resets and different usb ports
not impressed
UPDATE
its now decided to work? oh well not sure what i did
Right, i've had the same problem. Fortunately i've got 2 Orbits at work to play about with, and after every possible combination going, i've found what the problem is........
Like previously posted, it is a hardware problem, however, in my case it was to do with the connection.
Quite simply all i did was insert the cable into the Orbit (not connecting). Then i would rest my hole punch on the connection next to the orbit - forcing the Orbit to lift upwards. And hey presto it works !
Hop this helps people

Cannot Sync from USB

Hello,
I'm facing a problem with my HTC Touch Pro2. I can't sync with USB. The mobile charges but my computer does not recognize it as a device.
I have already tried the following:
-I used 3 different USB cables.
-I tried it on 3 different computers
-Hard reset the device
P.S via bluetooth my mobile sync. just fine.
Thanks for the help
i have exactly the same problem with my tp2 and posted on here, but is seems unfortunately no one knows the answer.
i have since contacted vodafone and they have done some checks and come to the same conclusion i came to which is it must be a hardware fault.
my tp2 is being replaced on monday by the kind folks at vodafone.
Hi,
Did you try to deactivate the advanced network mode for ActiveSync?
You'll find it in Settings > Connections > USB to PC
Good luck!
I took my device back to the place i bought it, they made some tests and they told me that it's a hardware issue and i', waiting for a new one..
Had this problem myself. For me it turned out to be "Zonealarm" firewall even though activesync was given full access from the program list.
Disable Zonealarm and see if it works. My 2c.
other cable
Had exactly the same problem.
Connecting: no, charging: yes.
I used another cable and everything worked fine!
Good luck!
got same problem. after used the original htc usb cable, everything fine
Same Problem here...its a hardware charger problem in the TP2
A few things to try...
This most likely will work if you have no issues syncing via bluetooth (if you have that option), but you can't get it to sync via USB cable.
First - disable ALL anti-virus software. Many of them these days contain either a firewall (you want to disable all of those too - including the builtin ones in XP, VIsta, or Windows 7), or an 'unwanted programs/ports' protection scheme - which for all intents and purposes prevents the sync.
(More info - the sync is basically a 'networking' connection between the PC and phone. Anything that may have an effect on that could potentially prevent the sync.)
Second, do a clean boot with everything disabled.
Third - start (and then shut down) Outlook, to make sure it can run, get mail, and the like.
Fourth - bring up task manager, and kill the WCESMgr.exe task - which is activesync.
Fifth - kill the WCESComm.exe - which is the communication program/protocol.
Lastly, launch activesync manually, with the phone unplugged from the cable. Then - plug in the phone.
In 99% of the cases when I had an issue getting the phone to sync, this process worked.
Can you try this - and post back?
Yeah, i have something funky in my active sync too, but i think its something i tweaked in vistas services. I dont care to fix it either. I will sync when i want to, not every time i plug in to throw a file on the phone.
Try going into control panel and launch active sync manualy on the computor
@ Jayco no all fail...i have two TP2 here. with one conection its no problem. the second dont will be conect to my pc...some tp2 in germany are broken its a hardware problem!!!!
Had a similar problem with my HTC x7501 and I uninstalled Activesync then re installed it and it worked for me...Tj

USB Device Not Recognised - A NEW APPROACH

I'm hoping the wisdom and expertise I always find on this forum can help me.
I have a new AT&T branded HTC Touch Pro 2 (Tilt 2). After about a week, I began getting the dreaded "USB Device Not Recognized" error any time I plug it in. It never connects properly. I have customized the phone using some of the cool tools I found here, but I have never flashed any portion of the device - it's just the way I got it (WM6.5 CE OS 5.2.21849 Build 21849.5.0.63)
As suggested in various places on this forum, I have:
Soft Reset the phone numerous times
Rebooted the computer (WinXP) many times
Tried several different cables, including the HTC branded extUSB one
Tried different USB ports on my computer(s)
Tried other computers (WinXP)
Tried Windows 7 (WMDC) on another computer
Hard Reset the phone several times (with and without backup restore)
Uninstalled and re-installed ActiveSync 4.5 and the USB drivers
Adjusted various settings, including USB to PC, according to various posts
Cursed extensively in three languages
Regardless of any of this, every time I connect, I get the "USB Device Not Recognized" error within a few seconds.
I am now convinced the problem is hardware, probably the USB connector on the phone. I can't be without the phone until later this month, so I can't get the hardware fixed for a while. But I need to sync.
USB, of course isn't the only way to sync; the phone has Bluetooth. The problem is, I previously reset the device and un/re-installed ActiveSync, removing the pairing at both ends. To sync over Bluetooth, I have to first sync over USB, something I can't do.
MY QUESTION IS THIS:
Does anyone know a way to force ActiveSync to pair over Bluetooth WITHOUT first pairing over USB?
Any assistance anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated

if u go to settings>connections>usb to pc un check enable faster data sync
that might help
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, that's one of the first things I tried and it makes no difference (I just tried it again - no joy). I should have listed it in my original post.
The only thing I can think of is to somehow force the phone to sync via Bluetooth WITHOUT having previously synced via USB.
Anyone know if this is possible and, if so, how to do it?
I think you should go and replace your hardware if it has warranty (since you have not flash it). tell them my phone USB connection is not working at all, and let them try it on their computers to make sure, am sure the warranty covers this kind of things
Uh, you're talking about the error on your PC right? This is a common issue. (with pc's) Use another USB port on the computer. That is what I have had to do. It worked fine for both the TP2 and my Wizard before that, but ever since I reloaded the computer I get that error on certain USB ports. have not researched it too heavily yet, but I plan to.
Did you try installing the Windows Mobile Device Center?

Did either of you read the post? It clearly states that he has done BOTH OF YOUR SUGGESTIONS!
Unfortunately, it does sound like this is an issue with bad hardware in the phone. I would suggest getting it replaced under warranty.

I'm having the same problem (vzw TP2). I've already messed with all usb-to-pc settings, tried different USB ports (I've had other USB devices that req'd that), reset my PC (thank you dogbert), reset my device and am currently reinstalling ActiveSync; though I doubt that's the problem because my BT syncs work fine (I don't recall being req'd to do a USB sync intially before doing a BT sync, so I can't really help the OP with that). My device does charge via the USB cable when plugged into the PC. Disk drive mode doesn't work any more than activesync. I also haven't been able to spot it on device manager. Uninstalling it there was one of my first ideas.
I'm wary of using a BT sync to install the official VZW 6.5 ROM, because I've read bad things about ROM interruptions.
I have yet to find by searching anyone who had a real USB sync problem (i.e., one that doesn't get "fixed" by resetting or something equally simple) who has actually posted that they found a solution.
@OP, when do you get a message that you are req'd to sync by USB first? Does activesync tell you or your device?
I have this problem at work where the machine is managed. It just refuses to recognize the device. It's a security issue that we haven't been able to track down yet. I think if you look in one of the logs (forget which) you will see the actual error as it tries to load the driver.
just for the hell of it, try an older version of activesync. just tryin to throw in all possible fixes. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...3a-28bf-4cac-a682-58d3233efb4c&DisplayLang=en
try removing the sdcard and syncing?
RE: A New Approach
Thanks for all your responses. Sorry to take so long to respond to your questions and suggestions, I've been away (funerals and CES).
I have read extensively on this subject, have tried EVERYTHING everyone has suggested, and reached the conclusion that this IS a hardware problem, probably involving the USB jack itself.
At least for a while, replacing the hardware is something I can't do.
I want a BT sync for syncing with Outlook (Calendar/Contacts) and for installing software. I currently have NO plans to flash the ROM, I agree that would be risky over BT.
The error appears to be generated by Windows, I don't think it ever gets as far as ActiveSync, ActiveSync always indicates that it is not connected.
Despite that, I did try an earlier version of ActiveSync (can't remember which one); no joy. I tried Windows Mobile Device Center on a Windows 7 machine, but the results were the same: Device Not Recognized.
SO, does anyone know how I can force a BT sync WITHOUT first syncing by USB? That would solve my immediate problem.
Unfortunately I been there and done that.
The only workaround is to use a free exchange server - www.alol.net.br
I put it on my computer's outlook. Copied all the contacts and calender items from my default folders. Synced with ALOL. Installed on my phone, and synced via my wifi.
Not the best solution, but T-Mobile refuse to fix the faulty Diamond motherboard, but it works fine.
The first sync on the phone comes up with a error message, but after that it is fine. You need to manually put in all the settings.
I'm assuming that you have your phone set to "Activesync" + Enable Faster data synchronization on your Phone, under Settings->Connections->USB to PC
Have you tried changing this to "Disk Drive"? Activesync can still connect to the phone and do syncs, etc.
Atleast this is my experience on XP. I've had the same problem on/off after flashing one particular custom ROM.. Don't remember seeing this on my stock Tilt2 ROM.
Have you tried turning your computer Windows' firewall competely off? I read soom were that there seems to be some confict with windows firewall reconizing Activesyc.
None of the settings in the phone, including Disk Drive, make any difference. I'm fairly certain that I've tried them all. None of the settings on the PC side, including Firewall, make any difference either.
The connection never gets to ActiveSync; the USB drivers fail to recognize the device well before that.
As I mentioned earlier, I have become convinced that this is a hardware problem with the phone, probably related to the USB connector. All my research leads there.
The approach I'd like to try is to bypass USB connectivity completely and attempt to sync over Bluetooth. The problem is that ActiveSync refuses to sync over Bluetooth until AFTER the first USB sync (and setup).
Thus my question:
Does anyone know a way to force a sync over Bluetooth WITHOUT first syncing over USB. Registry hack? Settings change? ANYTHING?
Quick note.
This issue started happening to me as well.
And here's the somewhat odd part. With the SD card removed the phone is discovered properly. The original SD card and another spare one inserted in the phone cause the this USB error for me.
Go figure.
(and yes I've tried formatting the sd cards, and factory resetting the phone)
Since I use ubuntu, I'm not really going to spend anymore time figuring out this windows bug. Just needed to apply an update..via windows.
Try this it worked for me

Can't sync anymore on work pc

So... No idea what's happened, but today I can no longer sync my phone with my Win7 laptop. So far I've deleted the partnership on my phone & in the Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC.) Then I uninstalled and reinstalled WMDC. The error I'm seeing in the Event Viewer:

I'm at a loss here. I've never had a problem syncing my phone before. I've been syncing it regularly with this laptop & my home pc for months. The only thing I've done lately is install CoPilot8.
I can see the M$ Windows Mobile Remote Adapter show up under 'Network Adapters' in the device manager. Should anything else show up? Any ideas? I've been reading up on this error message for ages now and nothing's working for me. I really don't want to do a hardreset, but I will if I can't find anything else to try.

This is the only thing I've found that might be relevant...according to the posts it seems to be caused by a conflicting driver issue, there's a solution suggested there that seemed to work for some...

Darn, I had hoped that was one you hadn't stumbled across yet. The only other suggestion I might have is trying different ports on the PC, or a different cable maybe..? Sometimes when I'm using the cheap cable I keep at work for syncing, I have to reseat it a couple of times before ActiveSync will kick in and make the connection.
God I hate windows. I completely removed WMDC and the update to it, then rebooted. Reinstalled and now it's syncing. Good lord.
ETA: Is there a unix-based tool for syncing WM phones? I am seriously considering reloading this stupid laptop with Ubuntu.
Well hell. It got stuck while syncing, so I stopped it, disconnected and reconnected my phone, and now it's back to not connecting anymore. Grrr.
If its only happening on your work pc...
try disabling firewall and connectiong it... if that works... you will have to open some ports for mobile center(or activesync) to work with firewall turned on...
I didn't have a firewall on it, but god only know what the Enterprise McAfee was doing. I gave up on that stupid Windows load. Installed Ubuntu. It's sad when a non-windows OS is more reliable at talking to my Windows phone than Windows7.
hmm yea thats sad...

[Q] TP2 wont sync with WMDC on Windows 7

I really dont know why for the last two years Microsoft hasn't done anything for this very known issue. It seems they want all of us to use Microsoft My Phone service and put all out private data online.
The problem I am having is the following:
I am plugging my phone to the usb port using the original cable and if it detects the phone it will start syncing ...but this syncing will not actually start. The progress bar does not move.
Initially and for a couple of times after it synced fine. But then I got into this situation.
Of course like most of you know if I delete the partnership and make a new one it will work. But then what is the meaning of collecting data on TP2 when they will be deleted after making a new partnership....so there is no purpose of trying to sync if I have to make new partnerships once a while.
I have been trying aaaaalllllll the solutions mentioned in dozens of forums
ie:
unchecked faster data synchronization
checked if the right services are running
followed this procedure also [TUT] Dummies guide: updating HTC USB Sync Drivers
Checked my firewall settings, also disabled the firewall during sync.
disable third party firewalls and anti viruses
I have windows 7 ultimate 32bit, WMDC latest, and WM 6.5
I wish I could be proven wrong but I am sure that there is no solution to this problem. A 400euro operating system and a 500euro phone can not exchange information.
I have exactly the same problem (TP2 but running x64 windows 7). Did you manage to find any solution? Anybody?

Start > Settings > Connections > USBtoPC
Uncheck "Enable faster data synchronization."
It works just fine for me on W7 Pro x64.
If that still isn't working, consider switching to a different sync option, like BirdieSync and Thunderbird. That's what I use normally. The only caveat is that you need to set up a new partnership each time you flash, which is the same on WMDC anyway, so not really a big deal.

Perhaps the device itself is failing, then. If you are only able to sync with bluetooth, then it would seem likely that you would have a faulty USB port on the phone. Have you tried doing this with the stock ROM?
Win 7 64 bit
HTC TP2
Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC)
I was just about to ask a question about the same problem, but I see a thread is started already.
I just built a new machine, and when I first plugged the phone in, everything worked great. WMDC recognized the phone, loaded the drivers, and it sync'ed with Outlook 10. Everyone was happy.
The next day when I plugged my phone in, Windows Mobile Device Center does not even recognize that the phone is plugged in. WMDC shows not connected, I don't get the little "ding" when it connects/disconnects, and it doesn't show up as anything under "computer" when I click on the libraries folder.
The ONLY solution I have found is doing a soft reset on my phone. When I do that, it sync's. But as soon as I disconnect it and reconnect it, I get the problem as described above.
I haven't done ANYTHING to try to troubleshoot this problem other than uncheck that box on the phone that allows the phone to fast sync. Any advice appreciated.

Yes I have tried that Im using Vista. Thing is the HTC do come up with progress bar on the phone. Way to weird and frustrating.
Now everthing is connected and its only when the tri colors on phone comes everthing disconnects then the HTC emblem is there showing progress as zero.
When I'm in the WMDC and setting up a partnership should I check any of the options.

Like many others I have not been able to sync my HTC TP2 with my new Windows 7 64 bit computer.
I found a fix that worked for me. After many attempts to sync my phone and WMDC showing me it is connected, but at the same time show an error icon with no explanation, I thought I would do a manual Windows update to ensure I had all the drivers needed. After going to START> CONTROL PANEL> REVIEW YOUR COMPUTERS STATUS....I noticed I had an message that said there was an update for my Pocket PC. I downloaded it and it was an file called "drvupdate-amd64.exe".
I connected my phone by a usb cable to my laptop and selected RUN on the above file after downloading it to my desktop. It showed a status that was updating a generic driver and one other drive.......then WAMO, WMDC opened and my HTC TP2 showed it was connected and started to Sync. YEHAW!
