My phone has passed.... - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro Software Upgrading

Hello all! I have a sad story and an opportunity.
Sad story: I forgot my Universal on top of my car today and when I came around a bend in the road, it was slung out into a highway. The first car dodged it, and the second car aimed for it. I have taken pics. I think ti would have survived the slinging, and I am testing to see if the mainboard survived being ran over.
Opportunity: I'd like to get a new one. I don't mind parts-ing one together either. I am comfortable buying on eBay, and I don't mind it if I have to pay for international shipping, but I'd prefer to buy from the US for quicker delivery time.
I was just about to start really customizing the ROMS and all that too....
Sigh.
I hafe attached pics of the carnage. The microSD card survived. I did pull all of my data off though. Luckily I had done a hard reset las week, so I had all my numbers backed up. The SIM card survived as well, and I am borrowing a phone I gave a firend for the time being.

Wow those are some scarey images! Sorry for your loss, but that needs to be a closed casket funeral...
I've been considering selling my Uni/JasJar, PM me if you're interested in buying a used device with a bit of wear.

Oh my god............

RIP Uni are you trying to disassemble it for some pics of motherboard?

It looks better than I would have thought after being run over. You may be lucky and Mobo may be ok. You can buy replacement screens and casings.
Was it a compact that ran it over ? Cause I really cant see the Uni being that strong?
There are quite a few Uni's going on the UK Ebay anywhere from $200 USD to $80 USD if you are patient enough.
Good luck with finding another!

2 minutes silence for the Uni please......

Status update
I have purchased a B stock unit from eXpansys (the last one they had) for a decent price. Only problem is with the new unit, all I can do is get into the boot loader to see that it is version 1.00, and give it the hard reboot command. The unit appears to respond to the command but does not initiate the hard reset.
Hard reboot command I used: two soft buttons and the reset button.
Bootloader command I used: power, brightness, and reset button.
The bootloader does recognize that the difference between a USB and !USB connection. However, Windows consistently reports that the USB device has malfunctioned.
At first I thought it was a battery issue because the unit looks like it is brand new. So I waited patiently until I got home and tried all of the batteries I have here at the house. Yes, I was wary sticking the battery that was in the unit that was ran over into it, but I did try it. I have tried 3 chargers and two computers, and NADA. The only response I get from the device is using one of the two commands above.
Other random observations:
I tried inserting an old (disconnected but good) SIM card into it. Nada.
The battery was shipped in the battery compartment.
The backlight does work, as does the screen to some degree.
When I first plugged it into the charger, the battery status LED was red, as I anticipated.
The battery status indicator no longer turns red when the unit is plugged in. It does turn red when the battery is removed and power is applied.
Postulations at this point:
I wonder if I could load a ROM image to it?
I wonder if the battery is really charged.
Any and all help will be much appreciated on the matter.

I have disassembled it already and done some preliminary testing. The power LED does illuminate RED. I have tried attaching a battery and holding it, but hats not producing anything. But then again the screen is cracked like its cool, so I don't know what to expect.
I'll post pics when I get a chance.

It was one of those KIA/Mercades/lexus lifted CAR SUV things. They AIMED for it.
I looked on ebay, but I never though to check the UK side. Usually eBay does that for em for some reason....

Situation update
I have had a couple of offers and much sympathy. Thanks!
My unit from expansys is up and running. I was up till 3 am saturday morning playing around with it. I stumbled across a few posts that gave instructions on how to deal with a potentially bricked device. As far as I can figure. my phone was shipped to me without an OS. I knew that PCs could do that, but can you just blank the OS on a phone? I can theoretically see how that might be possible, but why would that happen? Do they not get shipped out with OS's? that baffles me.
The specific process of deduction I used:
read the manual (the service manual from HTC). It said to either reload the ROM or the mobo was defective. I started looking on this forum for the procedures and files neccessary.
It seemed that my phone was not booting, so I looked into the ROM upgradeing/reflashing pages.

As you can see, the wiki was quite helpful for me. Thae list above is not inclusive. I thought I had bookmarked all the pages I found helpful, but it did not apepar to be so. I have done much reading on this forum, and I purchased my original Universal over a year ago. I say that to let any newbies know that this is not a simple process and should not be attempted until you have a clear picture of what's going on.
I also tried the set 0 14 procedure, but that sis NOT work in my case.
What finally got me was the imate ROM I have attached to this page. It was able to see my universal, but only when I was in the bootloader. I will say that again because it bears repeating. I put the phone into the bootloader and ONLY THEN could I update the ROM on the device. I found no instructions anywhere on this, I had to figure it out on my own. The way I discovered it though is kinda neat. When I just plugged the phone into my computer, windows would not recognize it and say that it malfunctioned. If I plugged it into my computer with it in the bootloader, I got that nice sound that windows makes when new hardware is found. Also, I tried the Universal RUU and it did not recognize that the phone was attached in either way. Lastly, I first tried the ROM update with the phone not int he bootloader, and the IMATE program didn't see the phone. I tried it with it in the bootloader, and it did its thing.
I have attached a few of the files I found useful. I found these on this site, in some posts.
This is not a formal writeup, so please forgive any grammatical errors or rambling. I just wanted to share what I found.
So I finally just switched the SIM card back into the new phone. I tried to get MMS going, and SAME FRAKKIN thing: small pics. ARGH!!

Hi,
Some of the commands for MTTY are not in the standard bootloader command list, best advice is to supercid your device (this will help in recovery if things go wrong later too) then once supercid is complete, upgrade the Bootloader version and flash a complete Rom to the device, radio, extended and OS in one flash.
All info is in the Wiki mate, if you need any further help, post back to us or PM me.
Glad you got a device back up and running, ca'nt you sue the guy for intentionally hitting your old one................LoL!
Cheers,
Beasty

HELP!! Artemis blank white screen and not responding :(

ok everyone my first post here and I am not very familiar with the technincal stuff so please explain the fix properly (if their is any)
I have the o2 xda orbit and I never tried to modify it (change firmware, rom etc) or upgrade to WM6. Everything is original the way that it came. I have been using the orbit for about 6 months now and I had bought it off ebay.
Just yesterday I was chargin the orbit through the usb cable and I removed it since i had to go out and i just put it in my jeans pocket and after 5 min when i took it out there was a blank white screen. I took the battery out overnight and turned it on in the morning but still the same thing happens. The images below show exactly what shows up on my screen
I dont know what to do The minute i turn it on that is the only screen i see. No windows logo nothing. I removed the sim card and memory card. But still no luck. Can i change it through warranty eventhough I live in Canada? ANy help is appreciated!! I would be glad to give more information to you if I can.
If you know of any other forums where i can get better help, please let me know.
Switch it on but hold in the voice record button when you do it, do you get a Red/Green/Blue screen?
Maybe, it saw a ghost?

nope same blank white screen with a line in the middle.
Looks like a serious hardware death there. Did you buy it off an ebay shop or private? If from a shop you may be able to make a warranty claim, if not you'd have to post it to a repair centre and cross your fingers.
I am presuming here that you have tried a Hard Reset too, ie holding down both softkeys whilst resetting, then releasing the softkeys when you get a confirmation message.
if i press the reset button nothing happens. Orbit only responds to the power button. I bought it off ebay and hence the problem. Do you think it is only a screen malfunction and if i buy a replacement screen I should be able to solve the problem? is it easy to replace the screen by myself?
I DONT KNOW IF IT'S WORK for you BUT... I work in a big shop where a lot of clients buy differents models from Htc and, 2 months ago, somebody have the same problem (with 2 lines) WITH a Tytn. We have flashing his tytn with the original rom and the problem has gone !
Have you try to make a connection with you pc ??? If activsync work...(maybe the bootloader work and ... of course, you can't see if the htc is running because you screen d'ont work for the moment)... you have nothing to loose if you try... If activsync dont work, try to put a original signed rom from htc to the root directory of your microsdcard and follow this tread from the xda-wiki section : http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Artemis_SD_Card_Flashing
REALLY, I'M NOT A PROFESSIONAL BUT I REALLY THINK THIS IS MADE BY SOMETHING WRONG (FOR ANY RAISON) IN YOUR ROOT DIRECTORY AND THE SCREEN CAN'T WORK NORMALLY... oF IT'S MEABY DUE TO A BAD CONTACT BEETWEEN YOU SCREEN AND THE "MOTHERBOARD" FROM THE PDA.
I HOPE THIS CAN HELP YOU.

Could you give me step by step instructions on flashing the xda orbit rom. Out of frusturation i tried updating the orbit to WM6 and it successfuly updated according to message on my computer screen. So i have wm6 on my phone now but still the same problem.
I exctacted the file and put it in the root of my sd card and pressed the voice button and power button. Now how do i know that the ROM is being flashed? (since i just see the white screen). Even for the orbit should i just name the file on the microsd card as ARTEIMG.nbh ?
Thanks for all your help..but since i am new to this could you please explain teh process in more simpler terms?
Thanks again

Sorry to tell you dear friend but your LCD is cracked, you can see it very clearly on the first picture, bottom right hand corner.
simple way to test if true is to connect to the pc and see if its recognised.
sorry to give you some bad news.

i dont mind the bad news. So if i just buy a replacement lcd from ebay would that work? How hard is it to replace LCD? Is it something that i can do by myself? What should i be buying THIS OR THIS. You guys know of any other cheap places where i can buy lcd screen? My computer does recognise the orbit once i connect it to the computer and activesync successfuly completes the operation. So i am guessin there is something wrong with the lcd screen.
If You Put Out Your Battery More Than 30 Second, It Make The Same ?? And In The Same Place???
NOW YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOOSE... if is it the screen, you must change it...
But before, try to flash one more time your artemis with the original wm5 and, for sure, begin to make it supercid before (so you are sure you dont make a second problem !).
The client with a same problem (but not with the little trace at the right side from your screen) is happy now ! Play also a littlebit to make hardreset, softreset, usb bootloadermode ... And maybe you will see the color coming back!
I said one more time, i am not a professional for this problem but, "still trying" is never bad.... And for the screen... if you command him, you must waiting... so... try it first and if you have no more solution to try, send the pdaphone to htc... And if it's the screen, pay the replacement to htc and dont make it you self ( ebay?? are you sure 100 % the screen you buy its working???!!!??? ).
Yeah, if your computer recognises it, it'll just need a new screen.

Ok, first bit, there is a section on this forum on linking where to buy a lcd with touch screen, and there is also a guy who has done this, you can read up on it, but it will take you some time and hours removing the covers ( trying not to damage them ) and also hours of painfull cleaning, dust is the worst thing you could ever imagine,as soon as that nice lcd comes out of the package you will have dust all over it and once you have the phone back together the smallest amount of dust trapped inside will drive you crazy.
The best action for you to do would be to send it off for repair, in the end you will have your phone fully working.
the price of the replacement LCD is around 80 Euro's + sending cost.
the price you have to look into for a repair could be double.
but look into this carefully and ask yourself these questions.
1. Have you ever done this before.
2. Do you have the right tools.
3. Do you have a lot of paitience.
4. Is it worth doing it yourself and causing more damage to the phone ?
if you cannot say yes to all of these points that the solution is to send it off to repair.
hope this helps.

i've just sent you a pm! please check
Does anyone know, where can it be send for repair to?
I have a bricked phone (even bootloader is not started).
And it was bought at eBay, so no any warranty or so.
This is XDA Orbit and I'm in Austria, where O2 has no representation.
Could you, please, advice the companies/possibilities to reapir it (chip change or direct reflashing - not via USB).

Thanks for letting me know..i though it was a pretty simple thing to do by myself. But now I definitely dont want to take that chance. I will shop around for some local cell repair shop. But since this phone is not available in canada I dont know where to go. Does anyone know of a repair shop in Toronto?
I would think the quickest turnaround would be throught HTCamerica. Its located in Houston Tx...
http://www.america.htc.com/support/service-repairs.html
thats just my two cents, turnaround time is like 5 to 7 days after receipt... if they service your phone, they do p3300, you would have to call to find out

This happened to mine too,and screen was not broken.Working internally but white 'screen of death' showing.Sent back to 02 but no mention of fault on return.I think rom suffers corruption since it was after x close, fix.Not sure though!

Help me get an antique xda going.

Hello, I will start by saying despite my aged condition i have only recently (in the last week) been seduced to the ownership of any sort of mobile phone. I have one that works fine. But in my investigations a friend offered and gave me a XDA exec (O2) mainly to stop me moaning about the silly way text messages are entered with out a Qwerty keyboard. Unfortunately the phone seem to be dead. Or at least in a coma (as it has some life signs).
The symptoms are, White screen, not much else, odd times my eight year old got the keyboard lights on and thats about it, plain white screen. I have investigated the net for answers and tried. Reset (power, back light and reset), taking out battery and replacing, taking out the battery over night, i investigated 02's web site which i found of very little help, the user manual there etc presupposes some sort of information on the screen ! I seized on the idea that a Rom Upgrade might help but all links to that i have found are dead.
I installed Activcync to my PC and the phone syncs up allowing me to see that there is indeed things on it the windows files etc. Which gave me hope that it isn't totally dead.
So any suggestions? can i do anything with this impressive looking paperweight?
you prob get more results reading and writing in the forum for the device in question
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=280
as more people who own and or know anything about that device would be reading that forum
oops..will do thanks

[q] super bricked!

I've been rooting and working with custom roms for a long time (couple of years at least). I started with WinMo, and since I got my Evo the day they came out, I've been doing it in Android. I can also use ADB, and can typically recover from pretty much any problem on my Evo. (not claiming to be an expert) HOWEVER...
A couple days ago I loaded the latest Fresh ROM on my phone, and ran out the door while it was loading. Got in my car, the Evo started to reboot after applying the ROM, and zzzZZZIP! The thing went dead. And I mean REAL DEAD. The led which usually shows the charge level as not lit. I pulled the battery and tried to turn it on after replacing it. No go. Nothing when holding down vol while pressing power... nothing. When I got home I tried a wall charger, still no light, no boot, no drive with !, nothing. When the wife got home, tried her Evo's battery... same kind of nothing. USB connection to PC gives no adb access, no fastboot access,... you guessed it, nothing.
Sprint doesn't replace it if you didn't buy the warranty. Called HTC, of course they'll happily replace it, as long as it wasn't rooted. So I have a two part question.
Firstly, because I want my Evo back NOW! No, two days ago! LOL Is there a way to fix it?
Second, if I send it in, is there a way for them to know I rooted it?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Have you tried a different battery? That one may be fried. Just a suggestion.

Thanks for the quick response! Yep, tried that. I thought maybe I had one of the USB port issues that didn't allow me to charge the phone, but alas, my wife's fully charged battery couldn't boot it (or do anything), and my battery worked fine in her Evo.
I also disassembled the phone to check solder connections both on the battery connector and the usb port... both looked totally fine.
Well, if you pay insurance on it you could always accidentally lose it and report it lost or stolen.... that's what I would do, but that's just me....

Yup.... The ones yoe momma told ya about.... Bad Seed Customs!!
Yeah, I'll weigh my options. I think I'll send it to HTC first. I really don't think they can read the internal memory in this condition. I think it is probably fried. It is too late for the Sprint TPE (warranty), but but I might be able to finagle a squaretrade warranty. It will take time though. I thought about having a friend list it in eBay as a buy it now for what a new one costs, buy it from him (he give me my money back), and wait whatever period squaretrade requires, and file a claim. They're great, and I should have bought a squaretrade warranty from day 1. I've had it on the two phones prior and had to use it on one of them. They're easy to deal with and cheaper than any other options. Plus, its more flexible since they don't replace the phone, they issue you a refund for it (which would give me the option of switching phones, not that I would).

Are you certain the battery isn't fried? Also, make sure the SD card is fully seated and secure. With the battery OUT, connect your EVO to it's power supply and then reinsert the battery. Sometimes, after doing so, you will see the LED light up. If not, try again. If it still does not, try getting to the Hboot screen by pressing the down volume button while also pressing the power button.
I am pretty sure I tried that. I pulled battery while plugged in, put battery back, no difference. The first thing I thought was that it was a bad battery connection, because the phone has never worked with the battery out, but plugged in. The battery MUST be in to work. So I disassembled it to check the battery and USB connection solder points, and they look fine.
I called a reputable mobile phone tech and he said he has seen this a few times with rooted Android devices. He said he doesn't think they will be able to read the internal memory, or probably won't go through the effort it would require to (pull the internal memory out and put it in a reader).
Just pull all your root files off the SD card cause that is a dead give away that it is rooted.

Insurance
Going through HTC is going to be a waste of time. Their turn around time is 30 days... And thats if they dont discover the rooting and therefore actually replace it.
Your best bet is sucking it up and paying the $100 deductible for Asurion insurance... If you order on their website www.phoneclaim.com they will overnight for free. However I have heard of it being back-ordered, in which case you will either wait, or be one of the lucky guys who gets a brand new one.
In regards to them seeing your internal memory, I would say its 50/50. They can recover that sort of stuff, but at the same time, HTC is way more lenient with rooting/mods than other manufacturers.
Good luck

As it turns out, when you send your phone to HTC, you have to pull your battery cover, battery, microSD card, and any other "accessories" you have off, and keep them. They only want the phone without any of these items. I asked the guy, "you don't want me to ship the batter OR even the cover with the phone, but separate?" He said, "no, they are yours to keep. if you send them to us, they will not be returned." LOL! If they replace the phone, I'll have spare parts! Yaaay! I left my screen protector on it, in case they can fix it, they won't scratch it. Love my Evo y'all!
Yah the same exact thing happened to me when i first got my evo (the first day it came out). Absolutely no sign of life, but got it through best buy and just went back with no insurance or anything and she gave me another one on the spot.
Yeah if it won't even power, they won't bother. You are straight unless by some miracle they actually get it working.
TEP is a godsend.

That would be so barbaric and elementary - so many capitals and so much hostility!
To the OP:
Wrong section, jackhole.
It will probably cost you $35 without the insurance. If one store doesn't work, try another.
Yeah, just smash it on the floor and claim a new one
$100.00 ..thats it.
Where to post this?
I had a feeling this was the wrong place to post this, but not sure where else to do it. General maybe?
SORRY! ;-P
I wouldn't have a problem if an admin moved it to the right place.
Do did you make a decision to send it in?

Yeah, with fingers and toes crossed.
Well, I don't think they'll find out. Cuz I'm in engineering, and they could try to overvolt the phone [in an attempt to turn it on] but too much a risk of frying the circuits. Also no sdcard so they can't see your files...and way too much work to disassemble...so I think you're good.
Thanks man, that really is reassuring. I'm kind of on pins and needles over this. I can't afford ANYTHING, much less to buy another phone (I was laid off Jan 1).
I've been desperately trying to learn to program in Java, for Android. Both should provide me with more flexibility financially. I'd rather work as a contractor than FTE any day, but sysadmin type work is hard to find these days. I didn't expect to enjoy programming as much as I am, which is a pleasant surprise. Java isn't so hard. ;-)
I hope to get my Evo replaced under warranty. Then I hope to get more income by the time the new Evo 3D comes out! Not to sideline this thread, but what do you guys think of that thing? I'm also wondering if the new Evo View 4G would work as a phone replacement, just using Google Voice to replace cell service. Most new cars have bluetooth built in, and otherwise can use a bt headset (even stereo headphone type), so you never have to hold it to your head anyway.
Sorry, I guess I spaced posting my results. The did not know out had been rooted. They just replaced the motherboard and sent out back.
Unfortunately, they downgraded me from hw version 003 to 002. There were also two soft key lights out and I sent it back. Even though I complained about the version difference they still put another v2 in it. I called US public relations and came close to getting a hwy v3 board in but in the end it didn't happen. All they really care is that they made the device work.
Moral of the story is, if your Evo is dead-dead, send it to htc, and now you know what to expect.

DIY JTag

Three nights ago I plugged my AT&T GSIII to charge. My wife unplugged it in the middle of the night to charge her phone. When I woke up my phone was dead, no sign of life. I left it plugged in that day when I went to work, and when I come home there is no power.
I have already tried taking the battery out, putting it in, using my wife's fully charged battery, download mode, the USB Jig which I bought on eBay, nothing will turn the phone on. While I just bought a new main board, I would like to revive this one before the new one gets here.
Are there any guides out there to build a JTAG box? I have searched to no avail, and the XDA search is not working on my mac right now for whatever reason (maybe because it's a mac). I have a Raspberry Pi and have been debating whether to convert that to a programmer. I don't have the money to buy a RIFF Box right now.
Can somebody provide me to the AT&T GS3 Pinout for JTAG and / or a homemade DIY jtag box?
Edit: I also tried to perform an SD card boot. I've tried everything, and am not new to computers and am currently an intermediate programmer. Still, I've been reading all day and haven't found any sold answers.

Not sure how you can build a DIY JTag box. Before investing in this project, however, take note that the JTag unit is for forcing firmware installation directly to the MB and is mainly useful for fixing bricks caused by firmware failure. From what you described, it is doubtful if the problem with your device is with firmware especially since you weren't flashing any firmware. Most likely a hardware fault.
There is a known issue with a sleep-death that supposedly was resolved. I doubt it though, as I had the "latest" firmware. Either way, the firmware gets corrupted, and I have to find a way to re-flash the boot image with JTAG.

If you are certain it's a bootloader problem and you had the latest firmware (which is 4.3) then the unbricking instructions posted in the thread below may help ...

my problem is my phone does NOT vibrate when power button is pressed, it isnt doing ANYTHING at ALL, the red charging light only comes on when battery is left out and the phone is plugged in, light turns off after a minute or so of the battery being installed, to me it seems like less rom flash related, and more failure in the board, but im not good at this stuff so im probably wrong, i bought a verizon one (i535) for 50 bucks (pretty banged up touchscreen is cracked in several places i got it without a back cover, but it works,) to get me by but i miss my 4g on straight talk =( i wish i had just left it alone, it was clean just 1 crack in the touch screen wires ans such for lcdanddigitizer got cut by accient while trying to modify midframe for verizon board, i sure as hell cant afford the att version for a while 150-260 for a decent i747, is it possible that a JTAG service would be able to bring it to life or even one of those dongles to force recovery?

It could be a board failure but it happened right after you flashed the ROM which leads me to believe it is software related.
A dongle is not going to help since the phone won't even power up. A jtag service would be your best and quickest option. You should try and find a shop that will guarantee to revive the phone or you pay nothing.

Flashing an i9300 rom is guaranteed to hard brick the device and cause exactly what you described. If you follow the instructions in the thread linked in an above post it probably has a 90% chance of fixing it.
I am 99% certain it is not a hardware failure. Others have done the exact same thing and were able to fix it by using the instructions in that thread.

either way its gonna cost me a little cash, i dont have a 16 gig sd card, forgive me for being so noob but the sd card trick CAN work for my case?? i know for a fact i cant do anythingto my phone right now as it wont even power on, but if you BELIEVE it will work ill gove it a try
Unless you updated with the kk ota, you are probably on 4.3 firmware. I cannot guarantee it will work, but I believe the chances are pretty good that it will.
Just remember, if it doesn't work, dont give up on the first try. Many have had to run through the process several times before it would actually boot up again.
The only other tip I can think to give is to make sure you buy a decent sd card. It doesn't have to be top of the line, but there are tons of fake ones out there that would be less likely to work. If you can, try to buy one from an authorized dealer for whatever brand you are considering. This greatly reduces the chance of getting a bad card.

4.0.x was the last firmware, i never got to update it. i bought a PNY 16gb microSD HC class 4, it was 25 bucks at the local drug store, i was hoping for a class 6 - 10 but i believe it is a good quality card, maybe you would know better?
I won't lie, I am not a big fan of PNY, but as long as its the real thing, I think it should work. Class 6 or better is recommended, but it has worked on class 4 cards too. At this point, the only thing left to do is give it a shot. Good luck!
