Hi Together,
I try to update the radio and os on my universal. My problem is that I only have a Linux machine. I tried to use VMware, Paralles and VirtualBox with Windows XP Pro inside, but the update always fails. I tried on a Windows PC, which I borrowed for a short time, and it worked. So I think the problem is not my knowledge of the update process.
Since I'm quite new to the universal I still would like to play around with some ROMs, there for I'm still searching for a way to perform updates via Linux.
Of cause I would prefer a more "native" method, instead of using a virtual machine.
Any ideas, hints, etc.?
Best Greetings
Thorsten
I'm watching for this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=296436
In TODO file which cames with latest flasher sources I see Universal to support in nearest feature.
However, I'm able to upgrade CE rom using vmware from my linux, but unfortunately not GSM rom (I suspect I have corrupted GSM)
Hi Vacula,
thank you for your hint, I see there is hope...
I don't think your radio is bad, I have the same error on my tested VMs. But on a Windows PC my universal flashes like charm ...
Greetings
Thorsten
Hope you'r rigth! I'll try to flash from windows machine as soon as I get one, and 'll report here just to know what's current status with virtual machines in linux and usb.

hello,
I have a hitachi g1000 with windows mobile 2002, i want to rid off from sprint win version with all functions and feature and install a normal winCE.
the problem is, I cant do that, downloaded from micrsoft website trial verision but when run setup.exe it stops and ask tell my windows on PC need some other application and etc and etc. I install one application .NET Framework 2 but still not possible to go on with setup.
I would like to know is it only with me or someone also experince similar problems, please share with me yourexperience if you have installed on your pda win CE and how.
is there any other way to install it on my hitachi, or what I'm doing wrong?
Hello dar22.
It seems you misunderstand the whole Pocket PC OS issue.
You cannot just install Windows CE because it is not a generic operating system like Windows XP.
First, Windows Mobile is a derivative of Windows CE, but it also adds some functions. Even if you could replace your OS pure windows CE cannot run most apps developed for the PPC.
Second, Windows Mobile is custom tailored for every device (so is Win CE) and the result is called ROM image. You can't just install a generic version and then add drivers because they all come together from the manufacturer.
So to conclude this:
Unless the devices OEM provides an upgrade, there is no way to change the OS.
yes I uderstand than the generic WIN CE comes without drivers for a specific PDA, but the whole idea that I don't need that pda's most of it's functions such as camera and phone functions, I need only to have WINCE on it.
Can anybody advice me how to rid off from original Windows Mobile and install instead of that pure win ce version?
I mean what applications should I have on my PC to flash my device with WIN CE?
You still haven't understood me.
When I said 'drivers' I meant such basic things like memory, touch screen, device buttons.
Even those things need specific drivers from the OEM so there is no way to install Win CE on your device, unless:
1) You can dump the original ROM and extract all the drivers.
2) You can get MS Platform Builder (full and legal version), incorporate the drivers and create a special image for your device.
(I think you actually have to be an OEM and have contract with MS for the second part)
I am not sure what you tried to install, but there is no Win CE version you can just flash to any device and it will work.
levenum, thanks for your support, what you think can I install linux instead? I just don't want to have the sprint windows version
Well, you could try looking for linux version, but I am not sure there is one for your device.
You see, for mobile devices it is pretty much the same thing with linux. OEMs do not release even the basic drivers so there are no generic OS for these devices.
There are linux projects for HP iPaqs and also xanadux project (look in the WiKi) for HTC devices, but I don't know of anything for your device.
Perhaps if you specify what exactly bugs you about the OS maybe we can recommend apps and reg tweaks to get around is.
I recently install Vista RTM6000 on my laptop. But I found that I can not upgrade my universal rom ever.
Is there somebody successfully upgrade rom in Vista? And how can I do it?
At this point upgrading roms under vista is impossible, because RUU software is incompatible with Vista
The current way I do it is to install Virtual PC 2007 and run XP to do any flashing...it's a cludge but it works.

oh,thanks very much,I can't refresh the rom for long time,but couldn't find out the reason.HoHo, that's just because I'm using Vista 6000.
Thanks, but a little sad. Vista does not runs so fast on my laptop. I have already two operation system installed. I really won't to install an another one...

How it works?, in my virtual XP, it doesn't recognize the prsence of any external devices, not only the jasjar but also the printer, webcam , and so on> Do you have any tricks to do that??
Hi everybody:
I recently started to use a PC with Vista. No activesync but instead WMDC exists. There is no problem in sync.ing with PPC but RUU does not work as expected.
I wonder if there is anyone else who successfully run RUU under vista and flush a new rom to the wizard..
I tried to apply the steps explained in this tread (which is for Hermes) : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299462 but I failed. RUU starts, then PPC starts in boot loader mode, after that the RUU hangs with an error...
Any advice, solution etc will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Orhan.
did you try mobilty ceter
i think windows vista uses mobilty ceter not active sync

I have used VMWare to update the ROM and it works without problems
it worked flawlessly!!
it worked flawlessly !!!!
1) install VMWare (http://www.vmware.com/download/ws/), 2) add a virtual machine in VMWare, 3) install Windows XP to that virtual machine (I used a 2GByte disk space for the xp virtual partitation), 4) Install activesync 4.5 ,
the rest is straight forward as you know

Yes, VMware works flawlessly on my vista x64... I've flashed ppc several times using XP virual machine and without any problem, but don't forget to disable usb connection on WMDC - else the RUU may cause an error in bootloader mode as it happened to me
Easier way?
So your saying this is the easiest way? There has to be an easier way to flash on vista.
i also use a virtual machine...its called Parallels Workstation...all vista users stick with a vitual machine...it is the easiest way so far...unless u just want the OS then just use ShellTools
Step By Step
Can somebody explain step by step how dos it work.Thank you.

I'm not sure exactly what "it" is referring to, but if you are talking about how to install a VMWare workstation and create an image, there are plenty of helps online already to explain that. Just Google it. If you are referring to how to do the ROM update once you get into your virtual machine, it's pretty straight forward. You just plug in your USB cable from your cradle (when the Axim is on it) and the virtual machine will install it just as if you were running Windows XP natively on your machine. Again, there are lots of helps out there if you Google it.
htc prophet
1. installed vmware - xp pro
2. installed active sync 4.5
3. WMDC usb bypass
4. VM menu - REMOVABLE DEVICES - USB DEVICES - High tech computer usb device
5. nothing
just curious, but will this work with microsoft virtual pc instead of vmware? will probably test it myself when i next flash a new rom, but figured it was worth asking here...

Yes, it should work just fine. It's the same concept either program you use.
I think that microsoft virtual pc 2007 doesn't support USB connections, so it won't work with it.

Oh really? Well why the heck would Microsoft do that (remove USB connection support)?

hmmm...that would suck...though it does seem like virtual pc is a bit limited in it's hardware setup for a virtual system. if it doesn't work, i guess i'll have to try vmware...assuming it's free as well.
thx for the tips

VMWare Player is free, but you would have to obtain a VMWare image somehow to use it. Otherwise, to create a VMWare image, you have to get VMWare Workstation which is gonna cost you.
yup...confirmed that virtual pc doesn't work...doesn't pick up connection (kinda sucks...since it was a free program)...

Well, it is a M$ product...free isn't really part of their vocabulary.
I'm in the middle of writing a paper for class and ADD has kicked in... I'm running windows xp pro 64bit and want to upgrade my xv6800 with dcd's new rom. Anyone have a similar set up and have any problems? I'm no stranger to vmware so I know how that works. Just wondering if I can do everything in x64. Thanks ^_^
As I have never done it with winxp x64,can't suggest much, but winxp x32 sp2 is widely used and very stable for flashing and is highly recommended.
Cheers !
could be an issue that the 64bit version cant use drivers not signed by ms not sure if the ones required are
Tried to install a Meshe Rom (vanilla)
But all programmatic has problems with the 64bit structure.
Hi guys, I've searched already, and found nothing that answers my question, so that's said. Now, my Windows computer (a laptop) was SMASHED by a cousin of mine. That was the computer I used for flashing (everything else, I'm an Apple-lite, so I use my MacBook Pro and Mac Pro) But now I can't flash. Is there any way to do this with Missing Sync? on Mac OS X?
No there isn't. To bad. I use a Mac too (and the Missing Sync). All the rom flashing and stuff happens on a PC.
But...
Since you've got a Mac with an Intel processor, you can use Apple's Bootcamp or some sort of Windows emulation app.
ah!! A fellow Apple-lite. Hmmm... Can't flash... that IS rather depressing...
Flashing on a Mac Solutions
I also am searching for a solution to this problem. I have a Powermac G4 so, alas, I can't do mine through intel via bootcamp. I would have to spend the money and lower myself to Virtual PC. I'd rather put that towards a new Macbook Pro! You can do it through bootcamp. I did it at my Dad's house on his macbook pro while I was visiting.
In my searching I've discovered that you can flash via your sd card, but you need a program to extract the .cab and make a change to the file. They were sugesting cabextract. Problem is, that it's not available in Leopard right now, and I haven't found another solution yet. I'm still searching though. If anyone can give any more light on this or correct me if I'm wrong that would be great. I really want to come up with a solution for us mac guys!

Way to put my smiles up there! Ha!

Check out VMWare Fusion which lets you run XP in a window. I use that to flash to my MDA Wizard and it works great. The only thing I haven't been able to do - and it may be resolved now in a later release of Fusion - is upload maps for my iGuidance navigation software. For that I have to use the PC.
Hope that helps.
You can use BootCamp to install & run Windows XP natively on your mac.
One of the problems is that I don't have a copy of Windows XP SP2 or above... I have SP1, but not SP2. And I don't have Vista either.

I don't know how to do it sans Windows. Please let us know if you figure that out.
In other words, I can't use Boot Camp, cos it requires at least XP SP2.
get ur device CID unlocked(CID unlocking requires activeSync)
n then try SD card formatting it doesnt require any computer
After my desktop fried, and i'm always on the go, i purchased a macbook and its my primary computer. I use windows xp running through VMWare's fussion to flash roms, hardspl, cid unlock, tether.. basicly everything for my WM devices. Works perfectly fine for my hermes and kaiser, but wouldn't work on my wizard(that was with parallels) and haven't tried on my magician.
Anyways, i used to use parallels before fusion and it also said it needed an xp sp2 cd, but i went ahead and installed it through the xp sp1 cd and downloaded the sp2 update after xp was installed and everything worked out fine. SO go ahead and give it a try with sp1 and see what happens. Also if you decide on running parallels or fusion, make sure you have enough ram! (i have 2gb ram on my macbook and fusion is set to use 1gb when its running and it runs perfectly!)
