Proposal for a Toshiba G9XX specific Thread - About xda-developers.com

My universal is mine for the last day (even if I'm thinking about buying another one, because is a superb device), so I bought a Toshiba portege G900 to replace it, it seems like it's another HTC project, I'm sure that this project's base was the Uni (hardware is quite similar).
Until now I have mixed feelings about it, but I think that there are many of us out there with this device or one of its "reincarnations", G900, G910, G920, G8XX.
I also think that the Xpedia X1 is mostly the same hardware as the Toshiba's devices, after all, the uni has proved to be practically the best compromise between power, portability, usability, form factor, full keyboard, etc.
So, what do you say?

Toshiba g910

Hi,
I haven't this device but I thing you have to go to
http://myg900.com
I see that many softwares run on G900 that has the same resolution, TOMTOM 7, TOMTOM 6, IGO...
Look at "G900 3rd Party Software" section.

yepp, it is a good place for TOSHIBA

Unless you can prove it was created by HTC, there is no way you'll get a forum.

InfraRed for Remote Control

Is there some software that can turn the InfraRed on Hermes for use as a remote control for things like TVs?
There is. Say, VITO Remote. But Hermes infrared port is really short-ranged (no more than a meter, I recall), so it's of little use.

Some iPaqs have a decent range, heck even wizard has a better range than Hermes. Anyway Hermes' IR is not meant for remote controlling the TV.
Would make an interesting project to see if the ir led could be changed or boosted for a longer range. Would love to use my hermes as remote as well
you can search in the old parts of the forum for posts by me for curcirs layout extentions for boosters for ir for pda's
it's alot of work but hardware addons always are

so why didnt you search the forums first on this topic? theres enough threads on the limited range of iRda.
Novii Remote Deluxe
My Wizard would operate the TV from the couch just fine.
No such luck on the Hermes though. It's IR port is substantially weaker then the Wizard's
the Ipaqs where designed to be used as a remote, a special IR was put in it.
Three is one other option, you can make a sound to IR adapter and "play" the ir signal from a wav file.
forgot where i read about it, but think it was from an ipod hack. gd luck

SHORT RANGED
I use Novii Remote Deluxe from http://www.novii.tv/pocketpc/ on my TyTN (Hermes) and it works just fine at about 10 meters with my TV, Hi-Fi Sat. decoder etc. etc.
My wife likes to hide the remote when the Game is on, so I use my "TyTN-Multi-Remote" quite often...

ha-ha, No I do not sell anything, though I could do with an extra income... ( wife just LOVES shoes )
Anyway, I think I exaggerated a bit with the 10m (32feet), took the wife's measuring-tape-thingy-for-making-clothes and my couch is about 5m (16feet) from my TV etc.
Sorry about that, but it is still much further than most of the people I talked to said the Hermes can do, most people talked about less than 1m (3feet) I paid the odd $30 which is less than you would pay for a good hardware Universal Remote and you still can't carry it with you like a PocketPC.
My TyTN (Herm200) was bought new May 2007. I flashed the official WM6 ROM 3.54.255.3 from HTC (5.2.1437 build 17944.0.3.1).
The software version for Novii Remote Delux is 4.11 (build 2006.08.21a, IRv27), released in August 2006.
Sorry again for exaggerating, as you get older the percieved distance from one resting place to the next tends to get greater...
IR
Select models of discontinued HP's that included the Nevo remote software were specially designed with CIR that allows them to have better range etc. This is the same type of IR diode in your conventional remote controls. The Hermes has IRDA. Designed for short range transmission.

Many thanks for getting back and supplying the info. I suspect that the hardware that one is using it on also is a factor.
I tried the exact same version of NoviiDeluxe on 2 different devices (so far). One a very cheap no name DVD player and an even cheaper Matsui TV. The maxium range I got from DVD player was ~ 3 metres and the TV barely got to 2 metres.
Anyway, it is much better than often stated. The Novvi software is very good. From their forum there might be a problem on Hermes phones with the pre-built IR codes but there is no problem learning and implementing codes.
novii is nice, but the range kills the fun with stock IR

Don't know but I think it also has a lot to do with the quality of the signal of the original remote,
May be my imagination, but when in IR-learning mode, I got a huge difference in range if I use new batteries and press-and-hold for a few sec. the button on the original remote, instead of just a quick press. It is as if the captured code is just that little bit stronger...
As said, this may or may not help, but give it a go, you never know...

allow me to elaborate on this, my last pda (which i kinda sat on - not as sturdy as a remote apperantly...) was the ipaq rx3715.
there are two type's of ir ports generally for pda's - sir and cir.
confused? its sipmle - Serial Infra Red and Consumer Infra red.
the ipaq had SIR on it because it was part of the "media oriented packege" that RX models sport.
TyTn seems to use CIR, short range in order to communicate with other devices. most devices these days dont even get ir ports these days. i've owned my tytn for a year now and haven't once used it.
you'l get up to three meters max on a CIR usually as far as i know - BUT I COULD BE WRONG!!
maybe it could be done something from the radio rom to increase the radio power of the IR port

Adding WM6 to any device (nokia, samsung, LG...)

I enjoy using WM6 on my HTC Touch but my problem has always been the physical size of the screen. Even with a VGA screen like the Glofiish phones the 2.8inch screen still falls short. Especially for on screen keyboards. And web browsing.
Having seen the recent releases of devices such as the Iphone, Nokia 810, Samsung F490, LG Viewiety. While we may have our own opinions about these devices, im sure that if WM was running on devices with decent 3-4 inch screens such as what is being offered, WM6 would be a better experience.
Then that got me thinking and i accept i'm opening myself to attack here, but what prevents us taking a samsung F490 or a LG Viewiety or a good mobile that has good screen & processor and flashing it with a WM6 rom?
I know there's alot more to it, but in my inexperienced view, a mobile phone is just hardware & software.
Has anyone heard of OS swapping with mobile devices? How would one have to go about it? What factors would have to be considered?
If there are any links on the subject i'd be quite interested.
Thanks
a rom require specielt drivers for all the hardware present in a phone without them the rom will never boot at all
a rom require a spc addressable space for it's bootloader and the rom itself
if the hardware chipselect model the mem in any other way the rom will never boot
for these reason it require time and access to devices and tools not widely avalible to make a rom for a device
and current version of wm only support ARM cpu all other supported cpu's was drop'd with pocketpc2000
Thanks for the feedback. That gave me a little more understanding.
I hear the iphone uses a 700Mhz ARM Chip and i did think it would be funny if it did run WM6 like you can run vista on a intel mac.
One can but dream.lol!
For now Roll on Sony Ericsson!
and one more reason is that unlike the operating systems running on our pcs installs itself according to the hardware config (e.g max screen resolution) but windows mobile devices are made in a way to be compatible with operating system.
just like wm6 has no chance on a magician.
I didn't realize that, but it makes sense. Maybe in WM7 they will address this providing a more flexible environment? I can see how it can restrict phone manufactures who want to offer more.
wm7 is going to be dual touch sensitive like iphone where we can touch the screen at two places for some functions. this is one of the reason present devices running on wm6 will hardly support wm7.

Some thing to clear about BlueAngel

I have planned to buy O2 XDA IIs from my frnd (2nd hand for sure)
Does it comes under the name, blueangel???
also please tell me pros and cons about this dmobile device
I already own O2 xda exec, typhoon and voyager
what about this one???
cud U, experienced users please guide me....am i gonna upgrade its rom to WM6 or not??
It's a great device, you won't make a mistake It has Intel PXA263 400mhz processor (This is the only thing i don't like in blueangel. It is not so fast. If you plan to play 3d games it is not very good for this. But you can easily overclock it with pocket master to 530mhz. With this frequency it handles everything without Snow Rally - there's a little lag and you can't play Playstation 1 games even if you overclock it to 590. I got 21-23fps in Tony Hawk Pro Skater with @530mhz and Frameskip - 2), 128 ram (This is great! With so much ram you don't need real close button. But there are no applications that wants more than 32 ram, so this is not a big advantage), Big screen and the best design for games(The screen is perfect. It wouldn't be bad if there was VGA screen but QVGA is not so bad either. In web browsing the qvga resolution is a big dissadvantage. You have to scrool a lot. But now there are browsers now that supports Zoom function. With it the browsing is good even on qvga device. When Opera 9.5 comes out it will rock And the design is great for games. It's like joystick when you handle it in landscape position and there are many buttons), 64mb Flash Storage(It's not much but you don't need more. There are SD Cards for that), SD/MMC expansion slot( The bad thing here is that it doesn't support SDHC, there are no drivers for that and there won't be in future ), CIF camera (It is really badd. The image quality is similar. If you try to record video it lags. I don't know why :/ It does it wven in the lowest quality), WiFi( No problems here), Bluetooth (No problems here either), IrDA( It can't be used as a remote controller because the irda range is around 3 meters)
And finally the PocketPC comes with WM2003. You can install WM6.1 but I recommend you to wait for explode's WM6.1. His roms are the best With the new windows the pocket becmoes really fast and stable. That's all, it's a great device

I don't quite understand this question. If you are asking if it was sold under the name of Blue Angel, no. Blue Angel is the HTC internal name for the phone. It was never sold by HTC directly, but to the various cell carriers who rebadged it with their own plastics and ROM/applications.

Pros:
Good CPU speed (the keiser runs at the same speed, 400 mhz)
The CPU has been around for a while, so 3rd party apps that are designed for the CPU work well.
Good physical size on the screen
Lots of storage and program memory when the extended ROM is resized/removed.
Cons:
Since it is an older platform, any MW version after 2003 is a hack. The drivers are generally ported from other phones and there are various bugs that will probably never be fixed due to a lack of hardware drivers. Everything does work, there are just various quirks.
Radio range (bluetooth, wifi, etc) are not the best. Heck, they often tend to be down right crappy.
Unless someone is able to write and release a SDHC driver for the card slot, it will never support SDHC cards, which will limit the phone to 4 gig cards. 2 gig is the official spec for SD, but there are a few 4 gig non-SDHC cards out there.

I would. MW6 is a huge improvement over 2003 and 5. The latest ROM builds out there work very well, if not 99% perfectly, and are fast.
In my opinion, Hemli releasing wm6 for the angel breathed new life into the device.
Really, I wish HTC would revive the device, make an updated version of it. The form factor, while is a bit big for a phone, is great for usability as a PDA.

I second that! Just ditched my Hermes for my old trusty Blue Angel, which blows the pants off it! I forgot how much I loved the 3.5 inch screen!
Rookie as well with the Blue Angel
I am getting started with the Blue angel as well (O2 Xda IIs)
I like it a lot this will probably become my best buddy during my travels
I got a couple of complementary questions about it.
I intend to use it for business purposes, mainly Internet through
Wifi and GPRS, pdf and offices documents.
I saw on this forum that you advise to change from WM 2003SE to Windows Mobile 6 (the last published by Microsoft)
-My question is: This PDA is already a bit old now, is it going to work smoothly wit the very last OS, which is designed for more recent PDAs (i.e which should be more efficient).
I mainly want to use it for Internet, wich browser do you recommend ?
Internet explorer? Opera Mobile? Opera Mini? other browser?
By the way what is the difference between Opera Mobile and Opera Mini
you should go with opera mobile, as it is better suited for pda's. opera mini is suited for java based mobile phones.

man i wish they would do that, or release a device with the same glorious screen but with contemporary features, all in all the blu angel is still a killer device 4 years on.
Absolutely right. I had been using the subj for 4 years in nearly extremal conditions, uprading and downgrading firmware dozen times. But, unfortunately it died as hero. Really great gadget, legend of HTC platform challenging ages.
Hi
Well with WM 6.1 it does everything I need and thats for sure I have my pick of devices and always come back to this one - and the 11i which is just about as good
I cant think of a time I have been upset with what it does or doesn't do. I intend keep one for as long as it will run....

GPS?

Hello Trinity forum,
iam intedning to buy a Trinity P3600, as i see on the phone spec., it does have a built-in GPS module.
however the WM6 and WM6.1 Roms posted in this forum doesnt have any indication to support it, am I right?
another question: from your experience, do you recommand it? the spec. seems to be ok, fast CPU, big ram, GPS, UMTS HSDPA. iam excited to have one!
Regards
P.S.: for now i am using the HTC Prophet
No need to panic, GPS is all working and fine, I've used many ROM's 6 and 6.1, GPS works fine in them all.
Unless you really think you need a hardware keyboard, I would HIGHLY recommend this phone. It's small enough to fit in the pocket, but PACKED with features. I use TomTom software for the GPS and it works GREAT! I also have a TomTom Rider for my motorcycle, and they both work almost identically.
For a FREE alternative to TomTom software, you can always download the FREE Microsoft Live Search software. It has GPS traffic directions in it. Not quite as easy to use as TomTom, but Free... It also includes free traffic conditions and Satellite Maps. You can see your house on your phone.
PS: Welcome to the club.
Microsoft Live Search Software: wls.live.com from your mobile phone.

I hope the Polaris does not have the same problems as the Tytn2.
My Tytn2 feels extremely slow compared to the P3600.
Tried a lot of ROMs but I prefer my P3600.

[Q] Mini Cooper Third Party Entertainment System- WINCE/ Android - Upgrade Solutions?

Hello Xda-Developer Members,
My Name ist Robin, I'm from Germany and almost 20 Years old. This is my first post here (since 5-6 years ago), please be patient if my English is not that good or i'm writing in the wrong topic.
I've been customizing HTC Devices almost 5 oder 6 Years ago, so deep in my mind there are some rememberings about flashing XDA's left, but actual i would rather call myself an absolut beginner If you have interesting links or tutorials for me, that can answer my questions, please just post the link. I guess my english is that bad that i don't have the right keywords to find what i'm looking for.
I've bought myself an R56 Mini Cooper S and i'm very happy about this car, except of the Entertainment. The original Headunit has no functions than the tuner,an auxiliary input and a CD-Player. The sound is not powerful ( i already managed to customize and delete the 100Hz Limiter the Radio has for the "Stereo-System-Speakers") as this lays in the low ampfiler power. Upgrades are very expensive (Bluetooth just for calls - 300€ all around- no A2DP Support at all!!) and doesn't satisfy me as they won't work properly ( Problems with ID3-Tags, USB-Storage Sizes...).
Professional Digital Sound Processing (about 300€) requires a MOST-Bus Interface(very expensive). Summing up all togheter, working with the original Headunit will never make me happy at all.
I was looking for some alternatives and found two kinds of upgrade head units, that fit into the original interior design and which seems very interesting to me expecting the functions.. I'd like to ask the professionals here some questions about ist.
Headunit Version 1: Please search on Aliexpress for " ZESTECH New mini cooper car dvd player with gps navigation radio bluetooth steering wheel car dvd player mini cooper ", I'm not allowed to post a link in here
This Headunit is equipped with an ARM11 Processor 800Mhz, 256MB Ram, 128 MB Rom and a custom version of WNCE 6.0.
There are several functions that i would be really interested in- like the GPS Receiver, Bluetooth (With A2DP!) Touch Display, CAN-Bus interface for wheel steering control and so on.
Also i'm afraid of a very slow system ( 256MB Ram and 800Mhz is not very much, isn't it?!), a crappy software design with bad german translation, navigation software that doesn't work properly.... Problems we know from "NoName China Devices"..
So i'm wondering if it is possible to install a clean Version of WIN CE i could customize by myself ? Can i upload the ROM that is installed on the device just to take out drivers? (I guess, i'll have to?!)
I have heard, Windows Phone 7 is based on the WIN CE 6.0 Core. Is it possible to install Phone7 on a WINCE device ? I like the Design of it better than the WINCE- and Windows Phone would deliever a Software store, were i could easily download Apps, i guess.
Would it be possible to install a clean version of Android on this device? In those days i was hacking my HTC, Android actually came on and some custom ROMs appeared that managed using Android on WInMob Devices by using HaRet as "boot loader" , i deeply remember....
Headunit Version 2: Please search on Alieexpress for " Pure Android 4.4 Car radio DVD GPS for BMW Mini (up to 2013) with Bluetooth RDS USB SD IPOD SWC Rearview 3G Wifi Support DVR "
This Headunit is equipped with a more powerful 1,9 Ghz Cortex A9 CPU, 1GB Samsung Ram and 8 GB ROM. Even the quality of the software design and display resolution is much better. Also it has WIFI, a Can Interface, Bluetooth, GPS Receiver, and so on. Another benefit that there is already a version of Android running on it- but it's still no clean version. The description says something about that the google market is installed on the device. Could any problems come up to me that the market won't work properly?
Is it possible to take this device, take the hardware drivers out of the original ROM and finally install a current clean Android ROM on it?
Can man make the Google Market work? ( I heard there are Problems with self-cooked ROMs and the Google Market- but im only a noob )
I still remember, building a custom rom and make a upgrade ROM work is a big amount of work- but if this is possible it would be worth it, for me and sure for other Mini Drivers since most of them are sad about the bad Entertainment.
Please don't be angry about the large text and maybe some dumba** questions. I did much to find a solution by myself, but still im sitting here without any idea
I'm looking forward for your answers,
Robin
If you want a hackable Chinese headunit, I would recommend the 2 most popular here on XDA:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/and...4-4-2-kitkat-head-unit-newsmy-carpad-t2865525
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2660662
But I don't know how well they or their variants will fit in your car.
If you just want "Android Auto" you can try my headunit app on a tablet: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60894402&postcount=94
Hey hey! Thank you for your fast response!
The Version 1 Headunit you wrote about is my absolute favourite. very nice thing. Sadly, putting a 2-Din Headunit into my car means a lot of work, and there is still the old command unit for the standard radio that won't work anymore if there is a new sound station installed.
If there is no better solution i'm fine with that. But as long as there are - maybe - head units that fit into the original interior, this would be more satisfying.
A few Minutes ago i sent a Mail to the Customer of the Android DVD radio if there are any limitations within his android version and if there would be a possibility sending me a clean rom version if i buy the radio. Last point is a high expectation- but who knows
