Try a different usb cable, different usb port, reboot pc and try a different pc. if none if these fix it it is the TP2 but to check if hardware or software you may need to do a hardreset.

This same exact thing happened to me on my Touch Pro 1. It just stopped working. I even called to get RMA info, but never got around to sending it back.
Then suddenly one day, it started working again. I have no idea why. One thing that I did notice though was that the contacts seemed to not work so well... like, if I pushed the cable to one side or another, I could get it to make contact... but eventually it started working just fine without any issues.
It's still one of the world's most compelling mysteries. It will unfortunately never be solved, since I have switched to a TP2.
Same exact issue as mine. I had to return mine. The new one worked perfectly. The reason I think mine went out was a 3rd party charger. Did you happen to use a 3rd party charger to charge your phone?
I've searched all over, because a while back I thought I seen a post somewhere about hooking up external usb devices to the phone, but I can't find it anymore. Is there an adapter or special cord that will allow you to hook up your DINC 2 to an external hard drive?

It would be nice if there was also a way to plug a flashdrive into the charger connection on the side of the phone and be able to read from that. People could have special collections of apps and roms that could be shared with friends by simply letting them plug in your flash drive. I honestly don't understand why this hasn't been an option. why couldnt a flash drive be pluged into one of these adapters (http://www.google.com/products/cata...=X&ei=PRh6Ts68OqrQiAKClK3JDw&ved=0CL0BEPMCMAM). from here it would just be a matter of the phone being able to read the information off the flashdrive, which im sure some developers could find a way..
As far as I know, the main issue is whether or not the USB port supports a USB host function. It's similar to the concept of a computer being able to support high-def video but not having an HDMI-out port through which to broadcast the signal. Then the second hurdle to jump over is whether or not a USB Host Stack has been written/and or provided in the software. That's where a dev would be able to write a stack (not very easy) for the phone.
Here's a little reading on the subject.

Maybe I should have read this when I haven't been drinking. I might understand a little better. But it sounds like a lot of work. I would be willing to donate like 50 bucks if someone could get this working for the DINC2 and my external hard drive.

I found something that might work, I haven't got it to work myself though.

I was intrigued and googled your image. Found and installed USB Host Controller but it said the phone does not have the OTG or HOST driver installed. On the app page it links to Nexus One USB Host project page saying Snapdragon/HTC supported kernels can be found there or something along that nature. From what I can gather it would need to be added into a kernel something which I have no idea how to do. Also, it sounds like ICS will support this feature by default so I doubt the devs will go out of their way to implement it. One can always dream though . Hope that helps!
Then what happened?
why not just toggle USB mode and use your computer as a "External" HDD.........

Hello XDA members,
Couple of weeks ago, I plugged my charger and then all of a sudden, smoked started coming out accompanied by a burning smell. I quickly took out the charger and now I am not able to charge my phone. I recently sent it back to Samsung for repair but they could not fix it under warranty and was asked to pay $200. Imo that is way too much considering brand new Galaxy Nexus is around $500 where I am from.
Prior to sending my phone, I unrooted my phone, reverted back to stock rom and now I am wondering if there is a way of rooting my phone without having to be connected to the computer via the USB cable. I want to install a custom rom but is that even possible without having the ability to connect to your computer?
Thanks

You can fix the USB port for a few bucks, i seen people say it cost $10, not really sure as i never came across one, but it should be out there on ebay.
You will be looking for a microUSB board

I am in the same situation as sgs064. I have a Gnex that I need to root, but it will not connect to the PC with the USB cable (strangely, it does still charge via USB). I probably will just fix the microUSB port as Mach 3.2 suggested, but in the meantime it would be nice if there was a way to do it without USB. I realize that it probably is impossible, as efrant indicated, but if anyone has any ideas, I'd be willing to try em out. This is an extra Gnex, not my everyday phone, so im willing to mess around with it a lot more.
Thanks.

Hi, I am having a slight problem and am at a loss.
First of all, my phone is stock. I bought my OTG cable a few months ago and it worked just fine. I was using it to play games with my PS3 remote. However, with less time on my hands, I put the games aside and with it, I was no longer using my OTG cable.
Whenever I plug in the OTG cable, nothing happens and I don't get a notification that a USB device is connected. I have confirmed that it is not the OTG cable as I have tried it on 3 other phones, all of which responded to the cable connecting.
I am not sure when this problem started happening, but I didn't notice until yesterday when I was trying to use my OTG cable. In addition, when I plug in my phone to my laptop, my phone doesn't give me the option to turn on debugging mode. Again, I don't know when this problem actually began. I mention this because I am not sure if it is relevant to my OTG cable problem. Yes, I have checked and debugging mode is enabled.
I am not sure what to do and I have scoured the web trying to find a solution. Maybe I am searching in the wrong places, or maybe I am not just searching correctly, but I figured that my last option was coming here.
I thank you ahead for your time and hope that a solution can be found. I will be more than happy to provide any more details of needed.

Sounds like a bad USB port. You can replace it yourself, or do a warranty exchange. I don't think it's software related but try factory resetting. Or another ROM.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
It sounds similar to what my phone was doing a few days ago. I don't have the OTG, but when I plugged my phone in to the computer, it only went to charge mode and didn't give the USB options, and the computer didn't recognize it at all. I ended up flashing back to stock rooted and it started working again. I flashed CM and then AeonFluxx again and it continued working, so I assume that it was either an app I had installed or something extra I had flashed. Either way, it's working now.
TL;DR Try reflashing before you start tinkering with the hardware, that fixed a similar problem for me.

Alright, thanks guys.
I think I am just going to do a factory reset.
I am able to charge my phone just fine and it connects to the computer just fine as well (Heck, I can do what many others can't....connect to Kies). I have no problems with data transfers either.
So I assume this is a software based problem.
...I may as well root while I am at it....
Haha, I will tinker around a little bit more before I do a factory reset and come back with my results.
Thanks again!
Are you using a kernel with fast charge?
Never mind. You are not rooted so that is not the issue.
Well, it looks like the factory restore didn't solve either issue. So I ended up calling it in and hopefully the replacement phone will work. Gonna have to wait a bit though...GS3's are currently on back order.
Thanks again for the advice though guys! Appreciate it!

hi. i want to root my nexus but the usb port of the device doesn't work anymore after i tripped over the usb cable while it was charging. now the device isn't recognized by windows(and mac too), so i can't connect it to my pc. is there a way to root the device wirelessly?
If you have WIFI, then you can download any number of utilities designed to do this. There's even one that allows you to do adb over wifi.

What exactly was wrong with the great answer to your question in the post above yours? All three links provided you in that post are viable options. You have a unique problem, if you don't want to do any reading, learning, or work to solve it, good luck, your tab isn't going to root itself. Your best option is to just repair the USB port yourself with replacement OEM parts. I've done it myself on a couple devices, not that hard.

Ah. That makes sense. I replaced USB ports on falcon, toro, and n7 2013, yeah. You're right about the back cover, just need to be careful, and, besides that, i didn't care about cracking the cover at that point, my tab was almost unusable without USB port working. EBay has some decent deals on parts, I have a "cadaver" flo at home I can salvage from if need be for repair purposes.
i thought about replacing the usb port, but my n7 is in mint condition and didn't want to crack the back cover. alligator_asl you the man! thanks everyone for your help.
