How to cleanup my device

I was wandering how to cleanup my device. I am new to the PDA world. I got a new 8525 and I love it. But it seems to run slow(apps take awhile to load etc...)I was wandering if there was a cleanup tool that i could download. Also I saw an app that allows you to access the call list by the directional buttons. And I did not see a link to download it. Thank you so much for any feedback. I've heard nothing BUT GREAT things about XDA and this site.

There are a few apps like MEMMAID and Pocket Mechanic that can clean up your device, but note two things:
1) Be sure to make a full backup before using them, as sometimes they can screw up registry and force you to hard reset (format) the device.
2) If you haven't installed many apps on it yet, chances are there is nothing to clean. It may very well be running at its normal speed.
As for the contacts app, I am not familiar with it, but it would help if you gave us its name.

Questions on upgrading ROM

Hi guys,
I know this is somehow a dumb question for you all gurus here. But I am new to upgrading ROM although I have been using PPC for more than 3 years already. I normally only installed softwares, but when I came across this forum, I realised that there are so many cool things that you can do with your PPC and one of them is to upgrade your ROM to make it a better device. This will definately save me monies from buying a new unit (if i am not looking for better speed or memory)
My questions are:
1. How do I upgrade the ROM? Do I need a special software to do it? Or it is a simple CAB file installation
2. Is upgrading ROM legal? I am the kind that support buying the softwares that I need rather than installing the cracked version. I believe this will help the growth of a better development.
3. When I upgrade into a new ROM, would my existing data (such as texts, contacts, other data) be gone? How do I backup these data? I am already planning to buy SPB backup software and I am not sure whether this will be able to help me when I upgrade into a new ROM.
4. How do I revert back to my original ROM if ever I am not satisfied with the new ROM?
5. I know these are basic questions and I too had searched the forum, but I can't just seem to find the right answer to my worries.

Since you didn't give an exact make/model of your PPC, I can only give you some generic answers.
1) Depends on what device you have. Generally, you don't need any special software to do it. Generally, it is not just as simple as a CAB installation.
2) I don't really care to get into that. But, if you think about it, why would you come onto this site to get a "hacked" ROM if your device's manufacturer supplied one for you? What I'm really getting down to is, who would you pay? If you get a "hacked" ROM from here, it's most likely because your device's manufacturer has determined not to supply you with updated ROMs--why then would you send them any more money? Somebody else can try to answer that more appropriately, if they care to.
3) Generally, (again, I can't say anything specific without knowing your device) most ROM updates will format your internal storage. So, yes, you would lose any unsaved data. Backup software like SPB will backup most of your files for you. Go to their site to get the details on that. Essentially, most of your data (contacts, e-mail, tasks, etc...) are referred to as PIM data. Almost any backup software for a PPC will backup PIM data. PIM data, generally, can be restored into almost any WM version. You probably would not want to backup your system data (registry, system files, etc...) and restore it into another version of WM (if it is a major revision change...ie, WM5 -> WM6). That being said, most all of your current programs would need to be re-installed, as a general rule.
4) Did your device come with a "restore disc"? Did you happen to check with the manufacturer of your device to see if an original image (ROM) is available?
5) I'm surprised you didn't find answers to most of these questions, honestly. These are fairly common questions that would be asked in most ROM related threads on this forum. Unfortunately, there is some level of "you just have to try it for yourself" that is usually involved in a ROM upgrade.
I'm pretty sure if you throw out a make and model of your device in this thread, someone with something similar (if not the same thing) will be able to give you more specific answers to your questions.

sorry, i din realise the make and model of my PPC makes a difference. Mine is o2 Atom (black) with WM5.

??? Would you repair a VW Jetta the same way you would repair a Chevy Cavalier or a Passat or a Subaru WRX? Sorry to sound condescending, but of course the make and model makes a difference! But, now that we know what you have, perhaps someone can give you some more specific details to your device. I personally don't know anything about your particular device. Hopefully someone can clear up your questions for you.

With my due apologies,no harm meant to you,but how many people in the world,do you think can buy a new device which comes out with new features and new applications every year,well perhaps 10 to 20% at the give and take average.
secondly, software owner's,vendors,device manufactures and carriers who launch their products dont give a **** after the sale of products,never care and provide support and upgrades to their products,if they did than no one wud have come here and how then will they launch new products.why shud all those people suffer who had paid there hard earned money to buy these devices and than they are deprived of their rights.
We all complement all the techies,gurus and hard working staff of xda forums for their relentless,priceless,reward less and with no monitory gains,the way they are serving the community.All credit goes to them ! Infact,if you go through all of their work,applications,software and cooking of latest Roms,one must say,they are even doing a much better,perfect and excellent job than manufacturers and vendors themselves,THUMBS UP

Clean up stock Sprint ROM?

Hey all
Was curious as to how I could go about cleaning out some of the unnecessary crap that's pre-installed on my device, so as to gain more performance (AKA Free up more memory). I find it hard to understand how, if the TP2 has the same amount of memory (RAM and ROM) as my old TP1, how it initially has less available -- even after a clean reboot. Does it really just utilize more memory when running TF3D?
I'd really like to get rid of NASCAR and NFL apps, since I never used them on my old phone, and I most certainly won't be using them on this one. Sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum, but I figure I would get more attention / responses if I posted here.

There is a Sprint rom cleanup utility. Just search for it. No one replied because this has been covered long ago.

The things you want to delete are in the ROM. In order to get rid of them, you'll need to cook a ROM that does not include them.
There are ways to make them disappear, such as hiding the pertinent TF3D tabs and deleting the links in \Windows\Start Menu\Programs. This does not delete or uninstall the applications, though, and does not free up more than a few bytes of storage.
The "cleanup" .cab referred to above automates some tweaking and some cosmetic improvements but doesn't get rid of that useless stuff in the ROM.

[Q] How install a clean Linux Ubuntu on my HDHD

I`m a total newbie into this technology. I got myself a nice HTC desire HD. After a while, I got aggravated, feeling monitored by Mr. Orwell, whith this Android system. To my great surprise, I believe that I managed to route the phone, and install a Linux firewall. However, I still feel a little paranoid.
I know that people like me, stumbling around on a forum like this, might be a pain in the a. because we don`t "RFTM": However I tried, but there`s so many words that I don`t understand. I`m not a computer expert, and I`m not familiar with DOS programming. However, If I get my hands on a clear list, I know I can do it.
My question is this: I Use a modern iMac, with a card reader. I`ve two separate micro sd cards. Do anyone of you know about a nice, and simple explanation that idiots like me would understand, in order to completely wipe out this Google OS, and install a "clean" Ubuntu? I`m willing to make a real effort to learn, and I have patience. I love my HDHD because of the big nice screen, but I like to keep my personal life only for myself. I can`t stand that Mr. Orwell snap up all my datapackets.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, from you experts. I fear that this might be hard with a Mac, but I do have access to full DOS- utility on my computer. (iMac with i7 processor.
Also, am I pretty safe, with Ubunto on my machine?

You do realise that running ubuntu on a device that only has a touchscreen is kinda fail...
Also, i doubt Mr. Orwell - whoever he is ( The only guy i can find on google is some author) would even be able to monitor anything. Android is completely Open source, so it would be kinda suspicious to insert code that sends "Packets" somewhere.
Even if someone is somehow monitoring you through the Android OS, i doubt that they would bother monitoring a single person, out of the tens or hundreds of millions of other android users.
Regardless, following this guide, and doing a full wipe (Download superwipe from android revolution, flash it in CWM) should completely remove android. (And install ubuntu)

Hi, and thank you very much for answering my question. Mr. Orwell wrote about 1984, if I`m not wrong. Today, my gut feeling tells me, that all the apps onboard my HTC sends away datapackets that I would like to stop. After installing this Linux firewall, I was amazed to see how many apps that sent away packets with headers, containing mye personalia. Even my camera stopped working properly, when activating the linux firewall.
Nix ok for me. To bad, because I found the Android system very nice and intuitive to use. My great challenge, is that I`m not a nerd. I whish a was, in a technical perspective. Many thanks for your link to the guide. As long as I can type text messages, check the web/mail, and maybe the weather forecast, I`m happy.
What I really fear, is that I will manage to mess up this machine of mine. Well, it`s just a thing, and I `ll survive, if I brake it. My economy isn`t the greatest, but heck, it`s worth a try.

You could always try flashing a clean install of CM7. It doesnt have any HTC Apps, just google.
Also, the packets are either log data, or sync data for HTCSense.com contact/etc backup. You can disable it by flashing ROM Cleaner and only removing the HTC Hub related and HTC "Spyware". This is only required if you want to stay on sense.
Google backup can be disabled by removing your google account, or going Settings>Privacy and untick "Back up my settings" (I think its disabled by default on CM/Miui roms)

Something in the middle of an App and System Restore

So I've started to earn a few stripes in the world of Custom ROM's, been caught in a few boot loops, completely ruined a few ROM's because I thought I was above the instructions and so on, from my limited experience so far I've learnt one thing, these few words are my best friends right now "fastboot erase cache'"
So I come to my question. I'm using Titanium Backup. I've read and can understand why doing a system restore on a new ROM is simply bad news, even if the previous ROM was a similar type, ie, both being HTC Sense ROM's, however the most annoying and time consuming aspect of a new rom is as follows:
Entering all your account information again (Mail, Evernote, FB etc)
Losing all your SMS's
Losing all your GUI changes (The 8 folders I have on my front screen which took me ages to setup)
After restoring all your Apps from Backup, is there a quick and easy way to see what all the circa 250 system modules listed in Titanium actually are? Sure some are self explanatory, however if there were a reference somewhere where I could see which modules looked after GUI layout, SMS's and Account Information for example, it would be a nice way to save time when going from one ROM to another.
Does anyone know where I could find this information?
If I may be cheeky and slide in another question? Along the same lines. I understand that doing a system restore between different ROMS is bad news, what about when ARHD update the ROM I'm on? Would a full system restore after a clean ROM install still be a bad idea? Does the system restore touch things like the kernel and OS?
Any help would be truly appreciated and I'm very sorry if this has already been answered in another thread, I did have a poke about first.

In case you were all wondering, and I know all 4 million + registered users where all next to their computer's lying in fetal positions waiting for this problem to be solved, I did a bit of RTFM and Voila, the answers were staring me in the face.
Titanium Backup had even highlighted what I wanted In Bold Lime for all the n00bs like me!
