I know this is somehow a dumb question for you all gurus here. But I am new to upgrading ROM although I have been using PPC for more than 3 years already. I normally only installed softwares, but when I came across this forum, I realised that there are so many cool things that you can do with your PPC and one of them is to upgrade your ROM to make it a better device. This will definately save me monies from buying a new unit (if i am not looking for better speed or memory)
My questions are:
1. How do I upgrade the ROM? Do I need a special software to do it? Or it is a simple CAB file installation
2. Is upgrading ROM legal? I am the kind that support buying the softwares that I need rather than installing the cracked version. I believe this will help the growth of a better development.
3. When I upgrade into a new ROM, would my existing data (such as texts, contacts, other data) be gone? How do I backup these data? I am already planning to buy SPB backup software and I am not sure whether this will be able to help me when I upgrade into a new ROM.
4. How do I revert back to my original ROM if ever I am not satisfied with the new ROM?
5. I know these are basic questions and I too had searched the forum, but I can't just seem to find the right answer to my worries.

Since you didn't give an exact make/model of your PPC, I can only give you some generic answers.
1) Depends on what device you have. Generally, you don't need any special software to do it. Generally, it is not just as simple as a CAB installation.
2) I don't really care to get into that. But, if you think about it, why would you come onto this site to get a "hacked" ROM if your device's manufacturer supplied one for you? What I'm really getting down to is, who would you pay? If you get a "hacked" ROM from here, it's most likely because your device's manufacturer has determined not to supply you with updated ROMs--why then would you send them any more money? Somebody else can try to answer that more appropriately, if they care to.
3) Generally, (again, I can't say anything specific without knowing your device) most ROM updates will format your internal storage. So, yes, you would lose any unsaved data. Backup software like SPB will backup most of your files for you. Go to their site to get the details on that. Essentially, most of your data (contacts, e-mail, tasks, etc...) are referred to as PIM data. Almost any backup software for a PPC will backup PIM data. PIM data, generally, can be restored into almost any WM version. You probably would not want to backup your system data (registry, system files, etc...) and restore it into another version of WM (if it is a major revision change...ie, WM5 -> WM6). That being said, most all of your current programs would need to be re-installed, as a general rule.
4) Did your device come with a "restore disc"? Did you happen to check with the manufacturer of your device to see if an original image (ROM) is available?
5) I'm surprised you didn't find answers to most of these questions, honestly. These are fairly common questions that would be asked in most ROM related threads on this forum. Unfortunately, there is some level of "you just have to try it for yourself" that is usually involved in a ROM upgrade.
I'm pretty sure if you throw out a make and model of your device in this thread, someone with something similar (if not the same thing) will be able to give you more specific answers to your questions.

??? Would you repair a VW Jetta the same way you would repair a Chevy Cavalier or a Passat or a Subaru WRX? Sorry to sound condescending, but of course the make and model makes a difference! But, now that we know what you have, perhaps someone can give you some more specific details to your device. I personally don't know anything about your particular device. Hopefully someone can clear up your questions for you.

With my due apologies,no harm meant to you,but how many people in the world,do you think can buy a new device which comes out with new features and new applications every year,well perhaps 10 to 20% at the give and take average.
secondly, software owner's,vendors,device manufactures and carriers who launch their products dont give a **** after the sale of products,never care and provide support and upgrades to their products,if they did than no one wud have come here and how then will they launch new products.why shud all those people suffer who had paid there hard earned money to buy these devices and than they are deprived of their rights.
We all complement all the techies,gurus and hard working staff of xda forums for their relentless,priceless,reward less and with no monitory gains,the way they are serving the community.All credit goes to them ! Hi,
Have spent a great deal of time browsing through the site, and trying out some of the ROMs. Which has led me to the following...
The Company I work for has deployed a large number of XDA-II's (Himalaya), and we've encountered a number of reliability problems with them, not to mention users unable to keep the devices charged.
The consequences of these problems are: 1) Lost software installs and 2) Extra support time.
We've also found the O2 active UI to be a right royal pain in the ar5e!
So, having been playing around with ROMs, I have an idea of what is possible. But, to date, I've just not been able to find exactly the ROM I'm looking for. I'm quite happy to sit down and try and figure things out for myself, but it's quite difficult to try and find a good chunk of spare time.
So, here's the point of my message.
If I can identify the components I need to be installed within a "special edition" cooked ROM, would someone be able to help me build it? I'm basically looking for WM2003SE, so that the screen can be flipped into landscape - or a third-party progam to do that, a wireless email client that I will provide, backup software that I will provide, all the usual hardware stuff (BT, camera etc), no O2 UI (Hoorah!), and maybe one or two other packages, and as much storage/memory available as possible, and, of course, the ability to add a splashscreen. That's it - nothing too out of the ordinary. All of the additional software will be licensed.
So, that's my idea. What do you get in return? Well, I'm more than happy to donate to the site, and, come to some arrangement with anyone that is interested in helping - perhaps some hardware/software etc.
This would save me a lot of time, and be quite an interesting project - to see so many devices get a decent upgrade, and one that helps reduce support overheads.

well you can
select the win2003se rom you want and put the rest in a cooked extended rom that was what i did i put all cabs i needed in extended rom if the device gets hard reset it will install everything there
the config file must have the names of course
you can get some of the setting there too like operator settings
you can allways donate to xda-developes....lol

I've just bought a TP2 and reading through the forum I've picked up that the TP2 is customisable.
My questions are basically
-how customisable is the TP2?? i.e. is it only themes n ringtones that can be changed or can anything be changed on the phone??
Also ive read that applications like radio dont come standard on the TP2 need to be added manually.
-how hard is it to do this and does anybody have any tutorials on how to add apps and where can i get them from??

the device isnt the variable in customization, virtually every aspect of the TP2 is customizable and as the days go by and the devs create more things the options just become greater.
the radio add is simply installing the radio cab file, takes all of 10 seconds. All you really need to do (for the most part) for different app installs is to read if they support your resolution (480x800).

so regarding customising to confirm basically got to wait for the realse of items for the phone.
is there a tutorial on how to add a cab file as this is my 1st HTC phone,,,

Welcome to forums.
Yes there are literaly millions of apps out there for WinMo from any category you can think of, productivity, media players / streamers, games, tools etc etc.
Most apps come in two forms, .cab file extension which can be copied to the memory on the device and run from the file manager, or .exe (the windows normally executable) these are installed on your desktop and the app is then installed to the device the next time you sync it with active sync.
Before getting too in depth, I advise you to read the Wiki, and the first post at the top of this forum. Familiarise yourself with the devices basic functions and where everything in the OS, that way you'll pick things up a lot quicker when reading through posts on the forum.
The entire OS is customisable, skins, pre-installed apps, added functionality (patching missing or poor functionality (NFFP issues) and anything else you can think. What we do here is port newer builds from newer devices to get the latest OS builds and optimisations for our current devices.
Have a good read, you'll understand a lot better.

Indeed welcome to the forums.
It seems this is your first windows mobile phone? you can compare it with your windows pc a bit, only it's a bit less complex, though it still is.
On windows you can install every application that is ment for windows. As long as your system meets the system requirements of the software. It's the same with your Touch pro 2.
A lot of software has diffrent versions of their applications, each for a diffrent screen size. This reduces the size of the application (instead of installing the application for all sizes).
There are . CAB files. These are the regular installation files for you phone. Copy them to your phone and run it. (you can upload by bluetooth, but active sync is easier and faster) Then there are .exe files for mobile apps. These you install on you pc while you phone is connected via active sync. Your computer will then install it on your phone.
Now for the customisation part. This is indeed customising the OS. In the (near?) future, there will be a lot of selfmade (cooked) roms available. This goes with a lot of testing, it's the trial and error way of working.
As this is your first WM mobile?, I suggest you wait a while before customizing anything and installing custom roms. I would wait untill there are some stable roms available. Also you need to install HardSPL to make flashing (installing new Roms, and thus new OS versions) less risky. Because flashing and customizing isn't without risk.
I've been doing it quite a while (flashing) and it never went wrong, but there are also people where it did went wrong.

I know I should be able to make calls and send text messages my query is in regards to the internet settings will they automatically be picked up via the SIM card coz when i had my iphone i had to manually put in the address for the APN and im just wondering will i have to do the same??

Most likely, the settings will be set automaticly. If not you can set them via Settings (also automaticly). But if you have pre-paid, be carefull when the settings are set. at the moment you open a browser, youtube or other apps that use internet, internet connection will automatic establish. (sorryfor my bad language)

I was targetting the internet costs. They can add up. Don't know you country, but here you can't have internet prepaid without paying a lot of money. So you have too look out (in that case) not to use internet. And it uses internet automaticaly when using a program that's internet related.

Firstly, sorry if this has been dealt with, I did spend many days searching for answers. Hopefully some of the smart people here can help me out! I've spent quite a lot of time reading through the forums here and I understand the concepts of building custom roms.
I've not found whether it's the right way to image windows mobile devices in a corporate environment. For example, if my company has 200 palm treo pro, and we just want to apply the same setup onto every device (such as sprite backup settings, and install a dot net app), does this require the itsutils, extracting the fs and then generating the nbh using kitchen or something? Is there a simpler way to do it given that I'm not trying to modify anything after it's out of the phone? I'm thinking to simply setup 1 device the way we want it, then dump the fs and push it out to all 200 devices. Am I being naive? Is it a lot more complicated than that? Also, does anyone know if doing this would void the warranty/support on the devices?

There description makes it sound like they're flashing a rom image, but you have to figure it's just a normal backup utility. Do me a favor-convince your boss to buy it, then report back here on what the deal is with it, lol.

I have used it before. It actually does make an image file (contained in an exe) that will duplicate itself exactly on every device. It is not just another backup program.

I actually don't know about that... I never tried it, but it isn't flashing a ROM so it might get rid of it. Idk.

this is the response from sprite about their licensing. 300 per device is too much, but you can get a 10 day demo from them if you want to try it out.

The licensing for Sprite Clone is Per Device i.e. you can use “Sprite Clone 20 License Pack” to image 20 WM devices.
You can install the PC software on any number of PC’s but you can only create an image/restore the image you create to 20 devices.
You can create numerous images and restore as many times as necessary to the 20 devices.

If something is no longer available for WinMo 6.x, but if you have an old CAB you're ok. This new model takes the power from us and gives it to the vendors. This isn't in my interest at all.

I don't agree, at least in my experience it has been much easier to get my applications back with the MS store than with CABs for several reasons. After I flash a new ROM (analogous to a new phone, etc.):
I simply log in to get my store applications - 1 button push to 'install all'
I get the latest version
I don't forget which CABs I have to install, and don't have to make sure they're all up to date.
It's a trade-off, but it is in your interest.
I guess that's ok if you trust the apps to remain available.
I don't have to do much work either though after a hard reset or new ROM. I just run Sashimi which configures every part of the phone exactly how I told it to. I know this is a mile from what MS is doing with WP7 and that's not a bad thing.
But I am hopeful that devs will find a way to let us install apps independently of Marketplace. It might be that someone writes a great app that MS doesn't allow onto the marketplace, mightn't it?
I too am not a fan of the fact that MS gets to dictates which software I can and cannot use. Whilst I consider them to be far more liberal than Apple how can I be sure that what is permitted today will be allowed tomorrow.
It is conceivable that something I download today is retrospectively deemed to be in violation of some hitherto non existent rule- this could be the result of a legal ruling or MS regime change.
Nor am I comfortable about the fact that one firm will have the low down on ALL of the software that I buy.
Whilst i can see some advantages to the market place, what happens if I need to hard reset in an area with no internet access? Or if I am abroad?
An advantage of the cab scenario is that I am only reliant on my sd card. I can carry my backups wherever I go and reinstall at no cost and virtually instantly.
Straying off topic, perhaps, the success of yet another o/s orientated market place might have very serious implications for the way that we source software for our main computers...
whilst that may be true that it is nice to have cabs you can install yourself, the reason for just 1 market place is the fact that you'll end up with experiences like android where multiple market places exist and carriers are changing the market place so you can't access another. and then it's up to the developer to make it available in all these variations of market places. where as at least with iOS/WP market places, it's a 1 place submission.
you also get stupid conditions as well such as amazon's (future?) android marketplace where no app can be released before them in an update. they must be released all at the same time. how hard is that to co-ordinate?

I`m a total newbie into this technology. I got myself a nice HTC desire HD. After a while, I got aggravated, feeling monitored by Mr. Orwell, whith this Android system. To my great surprise, I believe that I managed to route the phone, and install a Linux firewall. However, I still feel a little paranoid.
I know that people like me, stumbling around on a forum like this, might be a pain in the a. because we don`t "RFTM": However I tried, but there`s so many words that I don`t understand. I`m not a computer expert, and I`m not familiar with DOS programming. However, If I get my hands on a clear list, I know I can do it.
My question is this: I Use a modern iMac, with a card reader. I`ve two separate micro sd cards. Do anyone of you know about a nice, and simple explanation that idiots like me would understand, in order to completely wipe out this Google OS, and install a "clean" Ubuntu? I`m willing to make a real effort to learn, and I have patience. I love my HDHD because of the big nice screen, but I like to keep my personal life only for myself. I can`t stand that Mr. Orwell snap up all my datapackets.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, from you experts. I fear that this might be hard with a Mac, but I do have access to full DOS- utility on my computer. (iMac with i7 processor.
Also, am I pretty safe, with Ubunto on my machine?

Also, i doubt Mr. Orwell - whoever he is ( The only guy i can find on google is some author) would even be able to monitor anything. Android is completely Open source, so it would be kinda suspicious to insert code that sends "Packets" somewhere.
Even if someone is somehow monitoring you through the Android OS, i doubt that they would bother monitoring a single person, out of the tens or hundreds of millions of other android users.
Regardless, following this guide, and doing a full wipe (Download superwipe from android revolution, flash it in CWM) should completely remove android. (And install ubuntu)

Hi, and thank you very much for answering my question. Mr. Orwell wrote about 1984, if I`m not wrong. Today, my gut feeling tells me, that all the apps onboard my HTC sends away datapackets that I would like to stop. After installing this Linux firewall, I was amazed to see how many apps that sent away packets with headers, containing mye personalia. Even my camera stopped working properly, when activating the linux firewall.
Nix ok for me. To bad, because I found the Android system very nice and intuitive to use. My great challenge, is that I`m not a nerd. I whish a was, in a technical perspective. Many thanks for your link to the guide. As long as I can type text messages, check the web/mail, and maybe the weather forecast, I`m happy.
What I really fear, is that I will manage to mess up this machine of mine. Well, it`s just a thing, and I `ll survive, if I brake it. My economy isn`t the greatest, but heck, it`s worth a try.

You could always try flashing a clean install of CM7. It doesnt have any HTC Apps, just google.
Also, the packets are either log data, or sync data for HTCSense.com contact/etc backup. You can disable it by flashing ROM Cleaner and only removing the HTC Hub related and HTC "Spyware". This is only required if you want to stay on sense.
Google backup can be disabled by removing your google account, or going Settings>Privacy and untick "Back up my settings" (I think its disabled by default on CM/Miui roms)
