Hi everyone, I just got a Dash cannot save the YouMail number in 'settings, phone, call options.' I change the voicemail number and everytime it just pops up with an error saying "The settings could not be saved." I tried it when I first got the Dash when it still had WM5 on it, and now I have Kavana's 6.1 and it still wont work. I have T-Mobile if that helps. Is there any other way to go about changing the voicemail number? Any help would be rock. Thanks!
do yourself a favor and drop youmail. I was a youmail lover until the past few weeks where I wouldnt get 50% of my voicemails....people were telling me it wouldnt give them an option to leave a voicemail, or when I called my wife who has youmail too, it would pass me to MY voicemail instead of hers. It has begun to be nothing but problems. I have actually switched back to my providers voicemail.
YouMail
Actually, the specifc issue appears to be the following.
T-mobile has a problem in some limited regions of the country, where they lose something called the OCN for T-Mobile to T-Mobile calls. The issue is that third-party voicemail services, like YouMail, rely on the OCN to know what number was called before the call was forwarded - if the wireless carrier screws it up, these services have to ask the caller which mailbox they were calling, which is clearly undesirable.
YouMail and other third-party voicemail services generally work well with T-mobile, except for these funky regions of the country where this funky behavior happens.
The way to fix it seems to be to call T-mobile, express the specific problem to them (when you forward the call, the service to which you forward doesn't get the right number as the OCN), and work with their customer service to try to address it - and we at YouMail are happy to work with you to try to get things fixed for your phone.
I'm running Android FXR07.1 on my HTC TP2 on the ATT GSM network. I was toying with some ideas about how best to use Google Voice. I went into the GSM call settings page and then into Call Forwarding. I tried to set Always Forward to my google voice #. Instead of putting my number there, it only showed a block character. Not only is the forwarding not working, but also I cannot now unforward my calls. When I try to disable, I get this message:
Call settings error.
"Your carrier does not support disabling call-forwarding when your phone is unreachable"
Any ideas on how to get this issue fixed?
I don't really have a clean solution.
But if your phone is out of network due to a bug, why don't you just restart on Winmo to reverse the situation?
It should work, as the call forwarding is an operator setting, no matter where you want to forward.
Thanks for the suggestion. I was able to resolve this. I actually found something online that was a code to disable all call forwarding. I can't find it now, but I think it was ##0040#...or something very similar. It still did nothing. Then I booted to WinMo and couldn't even find a cal forwarding option. I booted into the FRX07 build that I also had on my SD card and it still showed forwarding there. But in FRX07 I was able to disable the settings properly. Once I did that, I booted back into FRX07.1 and it was properly disabled there too.
I did not receive any kind of visual voicemail on the Xperia Play 4G so I installed the Google Voice app and attempted to configure it to forward my voicemail to the Google Voice service. When selected, it notifies the user in a "Call settings error" dialog box that it "Could not retrieve and save current forwarding number settings" but it offers me the option to "Switch to a new provider anyway?" This, of course, means that it can't read the carrier voicemail number used currently and, thus, can't back it up. It would normally back it up so that it can restore it when you disable GV VM forwarding. Anyway, when I select it anyway, I get another "Call settings error" stating "Forwarding number change unsuccessful." and advising me to "Please contact your carrier if this problem persists."
Anyway, I tried contacting them and they just gave be a new phone which I now know has the same problem.
I tried restoring and reinstalling Google Voice. I Tried it on 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 both with fresh factory restores. Same result. Actually, you can see the service provider change from "My carrier" to Google Voice" the moment you tell it to change it anyway and it once crashed before giving the final error causing it to stay on "Google Voice." What's weider is that it often works even though the phone still thinks "My carrier" is my VM provider.
Anyway, I downloaded the "AT&T Messages" app it gave a similar error too! I'm not sure what it said beacuse I'm not going to reinstall it after something else weird that happened: Google Voice was somehow sending AT&T Messages my incoming text messages and I believe they started billing me for them even though I had it set to receive through the native Messaging app without forwarding (should be free). All I know is that I made a more than a few accidental carrier SMS messages this month when testing GV but that was probably about 15-20 messages and yet AT&T just notified me that I already reached over $20 in charges and that I had used it "excessively."
Now, I switched from an iPhone 4 and did not have voicemail at all for the first month. It could not be set up automatically by phone and required a phone representative to fix it. I'm pretty sure that it was a remanant of my previous iPhone plan's visual voicemail setup. I was using a different qualifying line on the family plan to get the contract setup and, even though they knew what I was doing, they reset that line's voicemail and left mine unuseable. I think there may be some remnant of the previous iPhone config mucking this up on their end and causing my current issues but they insist that they have done everything right.
I do currently have it working even though the phone still thinks that it is set to my carrier. I doubt that GV is integrating it as well as it could when it still thinks that (I probably can't call it from my dial pad, for example). The most immediate assistance would be attempting to do the same thing on AT&T with yours and reporting your results. Any other help, knowledge, or insight would also be appreciated. Thanks!
Hello fellow Nexus 5Xers,
Just got the 5X and have been getting everything up and running these last few days. Previously, I had the old Nexus 5 on AT&T and am getting things set up on the new phone, also with AT&T. My goal is to try to get Google Voice VM set up.
I went through the normal voicemail set up on the Google Voice app, but noticed that I was not getting voicemails when people called. I tried calling my number on another line and got the "This number is out of order error message". I called AT&T and got set up with a carrier VM just to make sure I had something that worked.
I went back to the Google voice settings page on the website and re-registered my phone and tried to run the code that would forward calls to my Google Voice number. When I entered the code, it says "MMI Code started" and then comes back with "Call forwarding Connection problem or invalid MMI code".
I then tried re-doing set up on the Google Voice App on Android and still no luck. Then I tried setting up a conditional forwarding in the settings menu of the Phone under "Calls>Call Forwarding" to my google voice number and I get a "Call settings error, Unexepcted response from network".
Anyone else experiencing this? Any ideas on what to do to get Google Voice VM set up?
I'm getting the same exact problem and also on ATT. Can't seem to figure out what the issue is...
Works fine here just check on computer to forward calls use your at&t number
Try putting your SIM in another phone in order to issue the conditional call forwarding command, then put it back in the 5X. This is a network dependent feature which should continue to be in force until you cancel it (regardless of which phone you are using).

Thanks for the reply, TLopez. Are you using AT&T? When I go on my account page for AT&T, it says you have to enter a set of codes on the phone to set it up and can't set it up on-line.

I am in the same boat as you. As far as I can tell the problem is with the way AT&T configured the account when we swapped SIM's. (Since you went from a Nexus 5 to the 5X, I'm assuming that you had AT&T give you a new Nano-SIM to replace the Micro-SIM that was in your 5).
From what I have been able to piece together all Smart Phone Voicemail accounts being provisioned now by AT&T are setup with Visual Voicemail and that setup is not allowing the provisional forwarding that Google Voice requires to become the Voicemail provider for the number.
When I look on my 5X under Dialer App -> Menu -> Settings -> Calls -> Call Forwarding
the Settings for "When busy", "When unanswered ", & "When unavailable" are "Off", "Off", & "Disabled".
When I look at these setting on an AT&T phone that was provisioned a few years ago, those setting show the AT&T voicemail access number.
I've talked to three different CSR's on the business account line and they had no useful information.
Same issue
I am also having the same issue. I switched from Nexus 4 to Nexus 5X and it seems AT&T network is not allowing call forwarding to be enabled.
Here is what I have tried but still now fix:
1.) Uninstall and reinstall Google Voice app.
2.) Uninstall, reboot, and reinstall Goofle Voice app.
3.) Deactivate and reactivate using instructions on voice.google.com
4.) Try programming forwarding number under Call Settings menu.
5.) Talk to AT&T chat support. No luck...insist the phone is unsupported on network data protocols or some other BS.
Any information would be helpful.
I remember from the past that even if att set has errors on the phone, that it worked anyway. I have been using gv since the nexus one and it was sketchy back then. I havent' had any problems for a couple years. The new sim might F it up. But it works for me. I have been involved in many GV threads in the past. It might help to read some of those. The web interface GV is the key. It has mostly to do with the settings on your end, not att. They don't know **** all anyway.
I'm going to search and see what I can find. I have used GV and att exclusively since 2010, and It's never really failed.
To be clear, I'm using a 5x with an Att SIM, I do not have GV installed on the N5X and things work normally, both GV # and SIM associated att # both go to GV VM and Notifications come through hangouts and both numbers ring the handset.
post here for Q's about web interface. I never touched the n5x voicemail settings. on the handset. it just worked from the beginning.

But you didn't change SIMs when you moved to your 5X, correct?
That has been my experience with GV and new phones in the past. As long as the account was configured correctly on the previous phone, there was nothing that needed to be done on the new phone, since all the conditional forwarding was already setup on the network side.
yes, correct. I was just trying to say that it's possible and you don't need to call att to make it happen. Under my forwarding menu
always forward =off
when busy, unanswered, unreachable = my gv #

Yea, if I go into that menu and try to change the values it just returns an error, I am not able to change the values from "off" and "disabled". And even with those showing "off" and "disabled" AT&T's voicemail works correctly.
what about voicemail setting? I have "your carrier" not gv.

I have tried both setting, it makes no difference.
I even have had AT&T turn off VM on the network side, that didn't help at all.
At this point I'm not sure if "Conditional forwarding" is not available on newly provisioned lines or that the Nexus 5X doesn't have the tools to setup conditional forwarding.
I have a SIM adapter on order, when that comes in I will try to do the GV configuration on my old HTC M7 to see if that makes any difference. I don't really think that it will, but it sounds like a less frustrating step than calling into AT&T repeatedly until I happen across a CSR that knows how to setup conditional forwarding on the network side. (Or that knows conclusively that it is not possible on new SIM activations.)
read this page. it's something easy, it has to be. I have set up other people on gv with the same phones. Never had a problem but its in the details.
I do wish you good luck.

So yes, in this case, I can't seem to add my Google Voice number to those fields. When I go in, all fields are "off" and if I try to input my GV number for any of them, I get an error that states "Unexpected response from network"
Even if I try to input another number altogether, i.e. my home or work number, I get the same response.
I was having this same issue with my Nexus 5X using a new At&t nano sim. To resolve it, I had to call and speak with Customer Service. I explained that I wanted to setup Conditional Call Forwarding for all three conditions (busy, unreachable, unanswered) and they were able make the changes. I checked the Call Forwarding Settings screen immediately after hanging up and confirmed the correct Forwarding # was in place.

I have changed phones between iOS and Android several times, never had issues with GV until my first Nexus (which is the 5x). The MMI codes that GV gives would not work, and from the call screen, if i clicked on the (...) in the top right corner i could go to 'settings', but it still wouln't take my GV number.
I spent 2 hours with ATT, she was very very helpful and got "advanced support" to help. Eventually, ATT changed all 3 of my "conditional call forwarding" to my GV number, but it still went to my ATT voicemail. ATT lady started to conference Google in for help. I had to leave the call, but several hours later i started getting VM thru GV. I'm not sure if the conditional call forwarding numbers just needed time to activate across the network (ATT Lady said that it didn't), or if when she spoke to Google they figured something out.
Good luck everyone. The problem is resolvable with ATT help, I wish I had more details to provide.
I just called my 5X and I got my GV message for when a call is missed. I am coming from a Moto X 2014 that had GV setup as the VM and all I did was move my sim from that phone to the 5X. Not that this helps anyone with a problem, but figured I would chime in on my scenario that does work.
I was having same issue... Seems the only way to resolve is to contact Att. The CSR I spoke with on chat was very knowledgeable of this issue and resolved it in less than 5 minutes. Even still... It's an unnecessary inconvenience
I've had this issue in the past, it randomly started happening on my prior M8. Nothing worked...no MMI codes, online meetings, manual call forward numbers, nothing...I ended up getting it resolved by having ATT advanced technical support manually edit the forwarding scenarios and numbers on the back end. Even they were confused as to why it was happening, and I had to get to the second level of advanced support before the technician had the correct access rights to edit the numbers. This was back in July-ish, and they had been apparently going through some significant "non-cystomer-facing" changes to their backbend VM systems.. All GV working fine for me asof now, and I'm still using the same Nano-SIM card on my 5X that cane from that M8.
This is a weird one and has me a little concerned. If I try to turn off call forwarding I get an error telling me that the carrier doesn't support disabling call forwarding. Then it puts in the number +1 832-597-9997 as the number to forward to. Does anyone else get anything like this? Go to phone app, settings, calls. This still happens after a full wipe and install of the factory image.
PS, I have a pixel 3 but there's a lot more activity in the XL forum
Man, the XDA app and site is a pita. Not sure what it did to my title.

You piqued my curiosity so I went into the phone settings menu and selected call forwarding. It initialized for the first time and populated some phone numbers similar (not the same) as yours. I then selected the call forwarding toggle (it was set to off) and I got a dialog box to input the number I wanted to forward to. It appears to be working but I haven't tested it. May be a provisioning issue. How old is your SIM? Wouldn't hurt to swing by AT&T to get a new one.

When busy, When unanswered, When unreachable are all greyed out with the same phone number but I guess that is the Google service number or AT&T's. It accepts my forwarding number. I can then tap that number and get out to the pop up dialog which gives the option to turn off, cancel or update. Turning off and updating works fine. Exiting leaves me at the main settings menu. Looks like is is working with no errors. Check your SIM to make sure it is one of the newer series. If not get a new free SIM provisioned at AT&T. Are you PRE paid, or POST pay contract? Are you AT&T or on an MVNO?

Thanks. The Sim is new but I'll have it checked out on Monday when att is open.
