I have noticed a few people posting about Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) problems with the fantastic new 6.1 ROMS. This is what I discovered:
I was mystified that Internet Sharing was showing as "Connected" on the smartphone but my PC would not get an IP address (some other people report this as getting 0.0.0.0 but that just means that it's not getting an address). Then I realized that my laptop already had an active Internet connection (through WiFi) when I was trying this. So, I disabled my WiFi connection, shut the phone off and then turned it on, and Internet Sharing worked!
I think this is why: I don't remember if this was true in the 6.0 ROMs, but in 6.1, when the phone is connected with the USB cable (and ActiveSync 4.5 is installed) the phone will automatically grab and use the PC's Internet connection. So in this mode if you do any browsing on the phone you are actually using the PC's Internet connection and not the GPRS. So when you try Internet Sharing it creates a "double sharing" problem that keeps you from getting an address on the GPRS network. I think this is a cool feature!
If there is no PC Internet connection then turning on Internet Sharing on the phone works. Now I'm wondering what would happen if I am WiFi connected on the phone. Will Internet Sharing in 6.1 give out the WiFi connection instead of the GPRS connection? Probably not - but it sure would be cool!

Sharing phone's WiFi - not quite
So I tried sharing the phone's WiFi connection to the PC.
I know - why bother? Because it's cool!!! (Actually the phone gets really hot when WiFi is turned on.)
Unfortunately, it seems that Internet Sharing (on the phone) will only try to share the GPRS connection. It doesn't list WiFi in the Connect to... box. But it tries! In fact it gave my PC an address on the WiFi network, but it established the actual connection to the GPRS network. I tried turning the phone functions off but this just causes Internet Sharing to fail completely.
Oh, and a note: Internet Sharing will NOT work properly if you have the phone's WiFi turned on. This is because Internet Sharing will connect to the GPRS network but will give you an address on the WiFi network, which means that none of your traffic will route correctly. At least I think that is what's going on.

internet sharing implies pc/ppc sharing only right?

That is very similar to what I am experiencing. I tried this past evening to disable the onboard network connections of my home pc before I attached my Dash. I then attempted internet sharing, and still only got 0.0.0.0s for an IP.
Have you been successful on sharing your Internet connection on multiple computers?

BlueTooth was the problem.
I finally figured out that I could work around the problem by disabling bluetooth in the comm manager when I need to use Internet connection sharing. http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-385825.html was what clued me in to the answer.

I had been successfully tethering via Bluetooth with WM6's Internet Sharing function, and was doing so in XP. Well we just took the Vista plunge and I'm having an issue. The Network Connections is showing my BT connection as "Local Only" meaning I can browse other pc's on the network, but I can't get to the internet. My WiFi connection to my router connects to the internet with no problem (The Wireless Connection shows "Local & Internet Access."
So I can not get out to the internet using my Tytn as my connection. I used the "Diagnose Problem" function in Vista, and it tells me that it cannot ping IP address 192.168.0.1. This is the IP address of my router. I don't want it to try to hit that IP address, but I can't find a way to tell it NOT to. All the settings in TCP/IP protocol are set to obtain an IP address automatically. But it seems that even while using BT as the connection, it still wants to get to my router first, even though I'm not using my WiFi at all. I even tried disabling the WiFi connection. Still the same issue.
Does anyone know what I can do to get the pc to stop trying to get my router first?

Tell me about it! It took me an age to find some drivers that worked with my bluetooth, I ended up using the Toshiba stack. After a lot of fiddling I got it working but when it runs it is very hit and miss and I have yet to transfer anything between devices let alone surf the net! Have you tried the bluetooth set up wizard?

The internet sharing function on the TyTn used 192.168.0.1
You are saying that your router is also using the same address range.
That is a no-no. Change the router address to 192.168.1.1, and I think you will see better results.
@boz - Actually I have no issues connecting to Vista via Bluetooth, and all profiles work great (I'm using the latest Broadcomm stack). My issue is in my Network Connections, not BT itself.
@Wildbill - the Tytn is not using 192.168.0.1. The PC is trying to ping that IP address because it is the address of my wireless router, and the first time I ever accessed the net with that pc, I did so via WiFi through my wireless router at home. Now, what I am trying to do though is get on the internet in my car, while nowhere near my wireless router. But my pc still seems to want to get to my router as though I'm trying to connect to the net via Wifi, when I'm actually just trying to get to it through my phone. The PC connects to the phone with no problem, and the phone is connected to the internet, But, my problem is that I can't figure out how to tell my pc to NOT look for my wireless router's IP address first.
BT DUN was so much easier with Cingular. I wish one of the cooks could figure out how to get the DUN profile back into WM6's BT stack.
I am really confused here.
When you use Internet Sharing on the TyTn, You are using the Tytn to allow other devices to access the Internet thru the TyTn.
When you do that, the TyTn hands out the address of 192.168.0.100 and it is the gateway, and the Gateway address is 192.168.0.1.
If you have your home router using the same address range, you have the PC that the Tytn is sharing it's internet connection with seeing to addresses within the same range, and two gateways with the same address - The PC LAN card is seing the router at 192.168.0.1 and the Buetooth PAN is seing the phone gateway at the same 0.1 That is what I was trying to say. It won't work like that.
Oh ok I see what you're saying. I was assuming that when it gave me the error, that it was trying to ping my router since I knew that to be my router's address. I did not realize that the Tytn used such a similar gateway.
To correct what I said in my first post: I said that it was trying to ping "IP address"... the exact error message reads "Connot Communicate with DNS Server 192.168.0.1"
It shows a nifty little diagram of the PC connected to the Cingular Bluetooth network connection, then another line connecting to a picture of earth, which they call "internet," but there is a red "X" over that line showing that it can't connect to internet. When you click on Diagnose problem, the above error message is what comes up.
So now, I need to make sure I understand what you are saying Wildbill. I see what you mean from your post... being that I don't connect to my router anymore, ever, at all (since the pc never comes out of the car anymore, and I'm way out of range of my wireless router even in the driveway) what do I need to change? Everything in TCP/IP protocol settings are set to obtain addresses automatically.
Another interesting thing to note is that I did not have this problem when I had XP in my car, and I connected to my wireless router with that pc too. But Internet sharing worked fine with it.
If the only things connected are the TyTn and a PC, then the PC will obtain an IP from the TyTn, and it will be 192.168.1.100. It will tell the pc that the gateway is 192.168.0.1, which is the TyTn. Since the TyTn has Bluetooth 2.0, I would speculate that you could connect additional BT devices to the same BT PAN, and the TytN would likely hand out additional addreses like 0.101, 0.102, etc. I have not tried that nor have I read about it.
See that's what I gathered too. So I don't know why it can't get out to the internet, unless it's that Vista just won't let it for some reason. This bugs me because Internet Sharing worked fine in XP, and BT DUN works fine with Vista with my other phone. Unfortunately I'm getting rid of that phone. If my Tytn had a DUN profile in the BT stack I'd be fine. Weak.

I have no problem to connect to the internet (to update weather, news etc) when I connect my P3300 to my desktop (which connect to the internet through a hardwire modem and a hardwire router). When I connect the P3300 to my laptop (the laptop is connect to internet through the WIFI rounter), I then cannot update those weather or news in my P3300. What setup do I need to change in the P3300 in order to be able to get to the internet through the laptop's WIFI connection? Thank you for any help.
Should happen automatically if you have a standing ActiveSync connection. No special settings needed. On the other hand - Check your firewall. Maybe some soft on the laptop is preventing your PDA from getting access to the internet!

Thanks for the feedback. I have try to disable the firewall, but it still cannot connect to the internet. By the way, the laptop us window XT. If I enable the WIFI on the P3300, then it can connect to the internet by it's own WIFI. But if I disable it's own WIFI, then it did not connect to the internet throught the laptop's WIFI connection. I think there must be some setting in the network connection, so that it will be able to use the laptops WIFI and get information through it. But I do not know how. Any help is appreciated. I've been looking endlessly to find out how to share my internet connection with my mobile device over an adhoc wifi connection. I know most will say get router as they are very cheap but there must be a way to do this without a router.
I have enabled ICS on my internet connection in vista but the IP's that are assigned to both the pc and mobile connection when the devices are connected are temporary in the range of 169.x.x.x
The bright side of things is that I can share files seamlessly between the pc and the mobile device, which means all is good except for the internet. There must be a way to bind the device's ip to enable it to share the internet of the PC.
I have searched and searched and I have found nothing. Your comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated, in other words HEEELLLPPP
You need to bridge the Wi-Fi and internet connection. You do this in Control Panel, Network & Sharing Center then 'Manage Network Connections' on the left hand side.
A new page will open showing your internet connection and your wireless connection. Hold down shift and left click on each of them. Next right click on one of the icons and select 'Bridge Connections'
Thanks MaskedMarauder, sadly though my broadband internet connection is through a dialup and hence I cannot bridge the dialup and the wireless connection. If that only can be done somehow, the problem would most definitely be solved.

the way ya doin it with ICS will work. you need to goto properties/advanced...Internet connection sharing and hit the settings button..then tick the DHCP boxes, that will broadcast the IP so ya winmobile will get a DHCP IP address. thats for XP but it should be pretty similiar. I was having heaps of probs getting ics to work adhoc...
you may need to re setup ICS thou, because it wont work unless it uses the IP given when ya first set it up, eg. you cant have manually setup IP addresses in the wifi card.
Thanks Speedn, it looks like you've been through what I'm going through now. Unfortunately again on vista there's no way to adjust the DHCP for ics. I remember having similiar problems on xp but I've resorted to setting the ip's manually and all worked fine, downside was that I had to manually undo everything to connect to a regular access point. On vista that doesn't work though.
Vista is certainly doing something weird here with assigning the ip's.

share the connection with the PC by USB. Put a wifi stick/pcicard in the PC and bridge the connections, then the iFoon can have 3G too

i did get it to work this way back in the day when the phone ran wm5 and had dun.
do you have any pointers on how to get internet connection sharing in wm6 to let more than one device connect to the 3g connection?

seems like you may need an app on your pc to manage/route the connections not sure if this helps but you can try "network Magic" it give you a bit more options on the pc side for managing connections. would like to see where this goes for possible future applications. i'll give it a try when i have some free time and check with an comp tek friend of mine see what he thinks.
Yeah it sucks that no one has created a way to share the wifi connection just like we share bluetooth or usb.
We also need a proxy server that we can run on our phone.
ok, for me the boring part is the time of the connection, you can share via wifi by just turning on your internet sharing in whatever the pc connection, you just need to manually deffine your hermes wifi to 192.168.0.1 and it shares via internet sharing! The question here is that the connections stops after 10 minutes becouse of the warnig "check usb cable connection". Its very irritating to have to start connection every 10 min. !!!!!

Beware, some mobile provider allready use NAT, thus you'll recieve a non-routable IP. I am not sure that you will be able to share a connection of this kind.
So I've been using the Tom coding package that installs the mobile Wi-Fi router with no problems until last night... now it keeps trying to connect to ISP.Cingular and then stops... it basically doesn't work now. I've tried to uninstall and reinstalled it dozens of times with no luck.
And yet... the 3G connection works because I can browse through Opera. So...?
OhI might add that I can turn on the Wi-Fi and connect to my in-house router just fine and do what on the internet through the phone. SO... it is definitely something specific with wireless internet sharing.

You need to make sure that it is connecting to the correct address. At the bottom of the App, it should have a few different choices of connections to use. Try another one and see if it works. You may have to set up a new connections for this to work properly. Keep in mind that tethering/mobile hotspot is not covered by AT&T's wireless data plan. It is a separate monthly charge. You should be careful when using it too much at a time, so they don't block or throttle your connection.
The device I am trying to connect with to my Tilt 2 is a Samsung Galaxy Tab, and apparently it doesn't like ad-hoc, whatever that is exactly. I was told on the Galaxy Tab section of this forum that this is the case, and that I need some kind of "mobile ap", although again I do not understand what that exactly means. ???
Ah, see that's much better information. So, no, you probably won't be able to connect without another app doing so. Ad-hoc is, simply put, a connection to another device other than a router which is allowing you access to its Internet connection. If the device you're trying to connect with doesn't allow ad-hoc connections, then the Wifi Router app won't do you any good, as that is the type of connection it uses. Most mobile devices do not natively support this, however. The problem, therefore, is with the Galaxy Tab you have, not with the TP2. Find an app or mod that allows for ad-hoc connections and you'll be all set.

No. Ad-hoc is a connection between two devices. Unless you use a router, that's how it's going to be no matter if you are using WM, a laptop, iOS, Android, et cetera. The connection type is determined by the device sending the signal. If it comes from a device, then it is ad-hoc. It is not a problem with the software. That is how wifi was designed to work in the first place. The problem, again, is with the Tab, not the WM application.
Well apparently there is a solution for the Tab that allows it to see ad-hoc networks, so I will try that and let you guys know how it went.
Can no longer connect to Ad-Hoc with Tilt 2
I have been using both the CM Internet Sharing program and the WMWifiRouter with no issues for over a year now on my AT&T Tilt 2.
One day a couple weeks ago I had been using CM to connect my laptop to the internet. everything was just fine as usual.
At some point, I had disconnected and tried to reconnect, and since then I can no longer use either of these programs.
What happens is this...I turn them on and the phone will no longer hold a connection to the ad-hoc network that is created. Up in the status bar I see the icon showing WiFi trying to connect but it will not stick anymore.
I can connect to my office and/or home wifi router still. It just will not connect to the ad-hoc network any longer.
This makes no sense to me at all, since it has always worked and was even working earlier in the day when it stopped working.
I use the tethering frequently and really need to get this solved. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
