after searching google i found no information that would interest me, so what i would like to know is the following:
-is anyone using a gps device with the s620?
-is it possibile to use de mini-usb port to connect gps devices or do i have to use BT?
-what's the best gps software out there?
i am using windows mobile 6 and have a 1 gb sd card.

Before it was STOLEN, I used the Garmin Mobile 10 Bluetooth GPS System. It worked well with my T-Mobile Dash, however, the animation was a tad sluggish due to my limited space on the microSD card. The manual recommended using at LEAST a 1GB storage card...so that was what I did. Because of the infinite amount of maps the program installs to your card, I would recommend a MINIMUM of 2GB on your microSD.
Now to answer your question... The GPS unit has a mini-USB slot very similar to that of the Dash, but Bluetooth is the only method of connection between the two devices. The system is available on Amazon.com for $125.67.

I'm currently using a Freedom GPS unit...no bigger than a key chain and works well with google maps and windows live search...AND costs less than or just a hundred dollars.
The fact that it's sluggish would have nothing to do with how much space you have on miniSD card.
I'm currently using a bluetooth GPS receiver with Route66 V7 which works very well with the S620
Currently using a WondeX BT760Y mainly for Google Maps & Windows Live works fine. 44 Hours of battery life and connects through bluetooth. I don't think you will find a GPS Unit that connects to the USB of the T-Mobile Dash.

Hi,
Thinking about getting a TYTN and never had GPS navigation before so a bit of a noob. Whats the best kit to get, I would need the software and a GPS reciever so whats best to get.
I have found this - http://www.handtec.co.uk/product.php?xProd=142&xSec=8
Or is a bluetooth GPS receiver better? - http://www.handtec.co.uk/product.php?xProd=154&xSec=8
If its agains the rules to link to those websites I will delete them.
If you get the TomTom software then get the TomTom receiver as well because it will work right out of the box. Setting up non-TomTom satellite receivers in TomTom is a real pain in the backside.
I had absolutely no problems setting up TomTom with Holux GPSlim236.
Just pair the gpsreceiver with the phone and assing it a com port,
then select the correct port in TomTom. Works like a charm.
TomTom will even enable blutooth by itself.
Holux GPSlim 236
Also using the Holux without any problems. Small device with good battery lifetime and fast fix. Buy a small GPS so you don't have to leave it in your car. Thieves like them now everyone is taking his mobile out and radios tend to be build in by the car manufacturer.
Also take a look at i-Go software instead of TomTom. More maps available for East Europe and many nice features. Very fast on a TyTN! Can be installed from SD card.
Or look out for the SD version of TT5. It's always handy to be able to install a fresh version from the SD card after a PDA crash when there is no PC near. All other versions need Activesync to install, which you probably won't habe able to do on a holiday trip!

i was just wondering could i use the gps from the xda orbit on a laptop, and use gps software on a laptop...
Was also wondering if anyone has tried wififofum on the orbit yet? can u place wifi access points on it?
thanks in advance
Have a look at using Fransons GPS Gate, there is an option to output the GPS data via Bluetooth to another device (assuming your laptop is BT equipped) - not tried this on the Artemis as yet, but it works with other devices - Miike
One of my bluetooth device is an external GPS receiver. I did try to pair it with my desire but android is always asking for a pin code... this pin code is not necessary, how can it bypass this ?
Just put 0000 - should work
Or 1234 if that doesn't work.
It's probably a bit of a pointless exercise anyway, as I'm not aware of any GPS software on Android that can be configured to use anything other than the internal GPS.
Regards,
Dave
works fab with my car , I paired the phone, I then trusted the the car .. that it.. I can use GPS / Music / Phone etc.. from the car .. fab!!!!! The best blue tooth pairing I've had
Will try to use the default code to pair both of my items. The fact is that the external GPS receiver is better than the inboard chip, as it provide also TMC (via FM) information...

Yes, but what application is going to use your external GPS??
As I said before, I've yet to see an Android GPS app that supports anything other than the internal GPS.

Nav&go is probaly a good candidate, the igo series (igo, amigo, primo) and especialy the "my way 2009" or "motonav" could easily be se to use an external device GPS. You simply need to define the correct setting in the sys.txt. By the way, TMC part can also be another used with another com port than the GPS one....
Can't be 100% sure yet but i've been using them for quite long time on my wimo device...
Sorry, but I think you'll find that all the major GPS software uses the Android location APIs, which are tied to the internal GPS.

Dave

i did a very quick search and found at least some, they are not major but it does at least works :

I don't think either of those are for turn-by-turn navigation, which all the products you mentioned previously are.

test done with 0000 : paired but not connected
test done with 1234 : security message error
Next step, be able to connect it. thanks for your advices !
Hi friends
Since about 2 months I can no longer get gps fix with my HTC Desire. My 2 year old kids love it as much as I do, but unfortunelly they let it drop in the ground too often.
I'm afraid that the gps antenna is damaged, because the fact is that the gps really isn't working anymore.
A few years ago I used a windows mobile 5 phone with TomTom, and it accepted an external bluetooth antenna as wel as the integrated gps module.
Unfortunelly, TomTom is not suported on android. Do you know any android navigation software that accepts a bluetooth external antenna so that I can keep using my desire as a gps device?
Thanks in advance.
Hello,
are you sure it's the antenna's fault? Maybe some settings are off (i.e. you're turning on 3G instead of GPS?). What sort of external antenna do you want to plug into it?

Hi
I´m not sure if the problem is really the antenna, but for sure it is not about the settings. I have this phone for about 1,5 years, so I know what to turn on.
Have already made factory settings and reconfigurated everything.
I know that the old phones without gps modules could be bluetotth paired with an external gps antenna. At least the TomTom supported this option. The question is to know if any android navigation software supports it now.

I found some very usefull information here:

Already ordered the gps bluetooth antenna. I will post the results later.

Hi Team,
I'm using my Acer A100 as a Car Tablet (it's in the dash and working) but the problem is that it's GPS is very slow and many times Synic (the App) acting on me as looking for sat's
looking if someone else is using it like that and has GPS issues or any recommendations for external GPS to use with it
Thanks
I've used my Motorola Xoom for quite some time, bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab2 today to finally install into the dash properly, cant say I've ever had any issues with GPS using either Co-Pilot or Google Navigation (the Xoom has been in the dash but its a little too big and looks really stupid).
If your looking for an external module then anything based on sirf3 chipset is usually reliable, there are newer chipsets but I've always found them to be cheap and reliable when doing projects.
I've never had the need to use an external GPS with an Android device, or even if its possible.
Good Luck!
Best software to use?

If you use an external GPS receiver you will need an interface. When I used my G Tab for navi I used a program call Blue GPS or similar. There a few in the Play Store. I can't see why you should unless the A100 has GPS issues, or it is surrounded by metal in your dash.

I have always used CoPilot and really like it. I had Garmin on my WinMo phone several years ago and loved that but CoPilot is almost as good. IIRC CoPilot is on sale right now and will come with 12 months of traffic for free.
haha where do you attach the gps to? How would you use a tablet that's 9.7" as a gps, would you mount it to your wind-shield?
The best to use is a 7 inch tablet with integrated GPS. As for software beside Google Maps wich you cannot use offline , you may use : Navigon ,Copilot ,iGO ,etc
