WM 6.1 ROM with *both* BigStorage and Non-BigStorage versions? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

I'm trying to figure out if all of my hard-resets are solely because of BigStorage. So far, every 6.1 BigStorage ROM I've tried has resulted in Hard Resets within 24 hours. The only 6.1 Non-BigStorage I've found has been running for 4 days with no Hard Resets.
Unfortunately that doesn't provide solid information since they have all been different cooks.
Does anyone know of a current 6.1 ROM that has both Big/Super Storage AND no Big/Super Storage versions? Or if none exists, would one of the cooks with a current 6.1 ROM like to produce one? That way it would be almost proof positive that the trouble lies in the BigStorage. My thoughts are that the new WM6.1 is trying to use the Extended Rom in some unknown way with either the SMS threading, or OTA syncing. This is causing the hard hang and forced Hard Reset.
If I can get an exact same ROM, one with BigStorage and one without BigStorage and it hard resets on one, and works perfectly on the other, we will know precisely where the trouble lies.
Any Cook willing to lend a hand? I'll do all the testing (it's what I do for a living.)
Thanks!
Greg

Well, no interest in that idea.
Ok, then I can sure try this myself. Can anyone though point me to where I might find information on taking an existing 6.1 kitchen and *removing* bigstorage?

Which rom did you find without big storage?

I got my phone march 18th, and I put Faria and Dr Putt.'s clean rom on it.
I do believe it's BIGstorage. I've got around 71MB total.
So far not a single problem.

But a problem with me, and others. Faria's won't last 24 hours before hard resetting for me. As I said, *EVERY* BigStorage 6.1 has hard reset for me. The only non-Bigstorage 6.1 so far is working on 8 days without a hard reset.

CRCs PHK v12 Release 9. Get your WM6.1 NON BETA!!

I read in some forum that hard reset with WM 6.1 is related with SD power management and that it can be disabled from the Advanced Configuration Tool.
Try it and tell us results.

SD Power Management is enabled for both the non-bigstorage 6.1 ROM that I have yet to have a hard-reset on, and also enabled on the 5 bigstorage 6.1 ROM's that I have a hard-reset within 24 hours.
So far, the only thing that has been different is no hard-resets on the non-bigstorage 6.1 and hard-resets on all the bigstorage 6.1.

Are you sure? same kernel build? same programs? same SD drivers?
I recomend you to try it.

Seems to me I'm not alone on this problem. I never thought BigStorage has something to do with freezes and hard resets...
Sorry to inform you though, that I have tried a none BigStorage 6.1ROM but it still freezes and hard resets... So, it must be something else...

I have also tried this solution, but still the same result...

I also have to hard reset a enormous amount of times/day with Faria R32 (which is said because I like it).
I found out that most of the times it freezes when it has to write something to the internal ROM (registry, OS config, alarms, etc) so I also suspect of bigstorage. I hope someone finds out...

Well, I have nothing to lose I'll start with Faria's and turn off the SD Power Management.

I have tried almost all WM6.1 roms out there. And I too were not spared with the random freezes/hard reset problem. Except for CRC's r9 which is non Big Storage, used it formore than a week without a problem. And i was convinced that the problem lies with the rom being BigStorage or not. Until I tried Shadow CE 2.1, which is BigStorage. I've been using it for more than a week without any problem, no experience of random freezing/hard resets.
I was even surprised that Shadow CE 2.1 is very stable for my device since i experienced freezing/HR problems with Shadow TE 2.1, which is, if I'm not mistaken, came from the same built.
BTW, power management is enabled on all roms that I've tried.
My system is as follows:
Cingular 8525
Radio 1.47.00.10
I would like to help out in testing, just for us to be able to discover what causes random freezes/hard resets. So i guess we just have to make a poll on what particular rom works for a particular Hermes version, and which Radio rom version people are using. I've read in some threads that Radio rom 1.54/1.57 works well with BigStorage roms such as Farias.

Well, 2 days with Faria's Clean ROM with SD Power Management turned off and no Hard Reset. I did have two Soft Resets, but both times it actually just soft reset, before it would have hard reset. I'm going to give it 4 days, then try my preferred Naked 9b1 ROM.

I could find no mention of BigStorage or SuperStorage on the Shadow CE 2.1 or 2.0 threads. Are you sure it is?

3 days and counting! Still not a single hard reset. Also, no further soft resets other than those initial 2. This is looking promising!

Oh, I'm sorry. Try to create pocket word files, type some text into it. OR create some pocket excel files then save it. Then close the apps. Since, it's your third day, your memory might be depleted already. Try to run oxios free mem or similar app to free some memory. This was the last things I did prior to a freezing syndrome last night.

My best wishes to all who continue development for the 4700.

Thanks for the effort
I tried the untouched pdaviet version but had a couple issues with it, but will try your modified version.
Keyboard is back to looking presentable!!! Thanks algasystems. Hey sanjay I still have the Windows Mobile Lawn boot screen though... It looks the same as the pdaviet rom I think... I'm not gonna reflash back to check but i'm pretty sure.
I guess it's a good thing you started this thread... the vulcan was probably going to loose it any day now.
I'm using the 4700 rom editor for mods, what are you using.
Thanks for saving me the work of cleaning up the rom!!!
Later..
Chemong: I wish you good luck, but don't believe you will find my variation fixes any issues such as battery problems. This is just a cleaner version of the same rom.
MannyMania: Interesting that you are still seeing the lawn. Here's the boot screen I now see. Oh well, at least the keyboard is fixed. I don't intend to do anymore to this since it now is good enough until Kozhura returns but hopefully others will take this and improve it.
I've used Vivi's kitchen in the past, but for simple changes such as these, I just use mamaich's tools directly. I credited Chamine in earlier posts for the boot splash change tips.
Hope this works for you.
Regards.
Just flashed to HX4700 PDAVIET wm6.1 and the keyboard looks familiar to me, thanx.
Ciao
Just a note:
The first time I tried the PDAViet version, I saw the rather undesireable bootsplash. I tried re-flashing the previous WM6.0, which did not un-do the bootsplash.
I found that the only way to get the original blue and white HP bootsplash is to re-flash your device with the official WM5 upgrade. If you don't have the WM5 upgrade, I bet any of the WM2003 ROM update patches will yield the same results (just visit HP's website and search for your device to visit the downloads).

(This only applies if you want to revert back to WM6.0.)
Nice job, Sanjay! I ony had PDAVIet's version installed for a few minutes before I promptly removed it. You have solved every issue I had with their version.
what did i do wrong?
First of all, greetings and thanks to everyone who made WM6 possible on hx4700!
I noticed that my device shows only 54.33 program memory? On your screenshot it shows 100 and something. How to enable this?
Thanks!

Interesting. If people are seeing the PDAVIET splash and I'm not, your explanation may be why. When I reflashed my 4700 with the latest ROM, my previous flash may not have been undone. So thank you for the experiments.
Because of the capabilities of the 4700 (e.g. no phone), I believe this ROM can be made even leaner. I will try to repeat your steps and fix the flash the next time.
Do you think reflashing with a Kozhura WM6 ROM would accomplish the same thing? Even the thought of reverting back to the HP WM5 disaster causes me to shudder.

Thank you Vivi. I've found your kitchen to be excellent as well and a great help for ROM tuning. I also read your tips including ones to remove the RGU files, but PDAVIET already had these deleted so I did not need to remove them. I still feel though that for the 4700 capabilities, there are other files that can be removed to free up more space. I will experiment more to see what I can do with this.

rgu files are needed in using ROM Kitchen.
If no rgu files in ROM, no way to re-packages from that ROM and use ROM Kitchen.

FIX for lost settings (passwords, BT pairing, etc.)?

I've installed MARY 3.7.1 and some other cabs. After a soft reset it was normal that BT pairing, passwords and the GPRS settings were gone or didn't work.
By accident I tried an old CAB from mun_rus calls BT_DUN.cab, I don't install this one normally when I reflashed my device.
I thought the solution was in MARY 3.7.1, but after uninstalling BT_DUN.cab I've found out that the settings were lost again.
The CAB is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=39883&d=1180164571
Can someone check this with a ROM with the new XIP like MARY, PDAVIET, schaps, etc.?

Hmm, at first glance you actually seem to be right which is good news for many among us
I had never installed that CAB before, and I learned to live with lost passwords etc. (never got around to trying the workaround), but that's all about to change with this easy fixSome more tests have revealed that in my case the "first glance" must have been sheer luck
I mainly checked whether wifi passwords were required again, and tried uninstalling/re-installing/rebooting/resetting/... but all I can conclude is that only sometimes the settings are preserved and still most of the times the settings are lost - this regardless of the aforementioned CAB.
Well, I haven’t lost hope yet, though. Maybe someone will figure it out, but the sooner the better
MANY THANKS,
It's seems works fine...
Many thanks again...

I already fixed this problem in my latest ROM (version 1.2).

I think the problem is in the register!

The problem is in the XIP section, it is in the nk.exe (kernel).
Ausdim uses an older XIP version which does not lose settings.
The only problem was the broken A2DP. I managed to fix this problem and Ausdim will include my solution to fix A2DP in his ROMs.
Upcoming ROMs from me and Ausdim will no longer lose settings.
I hope other ROM-cookers decide to use the older kernel too.

As I already said, I managed to fix A2DP using the old bootkernel (nk.exe part of XIP).
This works for wm6.1 and wm6.0.
There is no reason good reason to use the new kernel in stead of the old kernel.
As i say 4 months before here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=342269
the old xip section (nk.exe) is working better with trinity 400mhz.
All my rom in this 4 months is builded with old nk.exe and i tell to cookers to use them to.
I dont see any reason to use the new (dopod) nk.exe with that very iportant bug.
No problems and nothing, nk.exe is the kernel from the device no nead to update that in the future.
The only problem it was in a2dp sound but after the fix from adewidt (Thanks again) the sound it is perfect!
Thank's

Interesting theory...flash a standard carrier WM6 ROM...which should use the ext_rom for setup stuff....do some tests and see if that changes anything.
Though i gotta say it seems a bit of a strange conclusion that the ext_rom memory area is draining the battery?!?
Are you running a superstorage ROM then i take it?
I did it on my wizard and my battery life went to 2.5 days with slight use.

So maybe making an ext_rom with zero usage...which can be made with the HTC image editor if i remember correctly....do a quick search for it (or i may have it on file somewhere)..
flash it alongside a standard WM6 ROM (non superstorage)......dont bother booting and then flash the WM6/WM6.1 ROM of your choice?? essentially wiping the unused area of memory with zeros perhaps?
Id like to see the results of this if you do have a go?
Are you superCID? if so then flash a normal WM6 ROM, unlock the ext_rom and delete everything in there, this might do the same thing?
thanks for your help guys, But I don't know what you guys are talking about. I know how to cook my own rom by following noobie proof guides, but I have no idea what i'm doing (like no idea what the steps are actually doing to the rom, but i know what i'm clicking?)

Extended Rom Problems after installing Wm6.1 and going back to 6.0

My experience with Wm6.1 has been completly awfull. HR, screen frezzes, white screens on load, no GSM, App crashes .... Even installing previously a official WWE rom.

Mmmm strange. I use the CRCs V11 since it is available and waiting for the next Shaps french one. Even if my hermes is "french", all applications are working fine (TomTom, a lot of GPS apps, Basic4PPC, astronomy softwares, PocketCM, Tcpmp, etc...). Even video calls are working fine. Battery consumption is fair (no push mail) with 1.47.00.10 radio rom. Till now i did not miss a call and speed is good (obviously, more you add apps, slower is your pda)
Btw, i always "flash" roms using sdcard method. IMO, it is the only reliable way (no possible usb deconnexion, so easy, PC independent,...)
Give a try to CRC's V11. Who knows? You could find your way through 6.1
Hope this helps
Wm6.1 problem
I agree with you. So far try out so many ROM with WM6.1. Encounter all sort of problems like hang when making calls, network not found, auto hard reset. But only Pays WWE 3.00 Final Full this ROM I never face all this problems at all. Perhaps you might want to give a try on Pays ROM 3.00. Cheers!
i'm using crc v11 till now and never experiencing any problem like that.

CRC V11 stores elements in extended rom (as far as i know). If i can suggest something: As you experienced problems with 6.1, just start first with a rom which seems stable. As a test, it is not so important to be Big Storage or not
I have been using MRH 5.5 for several weeks now with out a single freeze. Works great.
CRC12.1
definitely no problems. Unless you want to run microsoft's live search. The only thing that doesn't go and i haven't had a chance to tweak with s2u2 yet

Don't know. It could be a personal problem...
I went back to my well known K's Rom and the problems was still there. Now I'm sure that it is related to extended rom, that from time to time and without reason get automatically erased.
I have flash a well know oficial At&T Rom, as adviced by one of the best cookers here, then install again K's Rom final, and the problem disapeared for two days, but it is here again...
Does somebody know If I can flash just a oficial Extended Rom (instead of the full oficial AT&T Rom) or format the extended Storage with some program (pocket mechanic or some other like it)?. I'm a little tired of repeating the configuration proccess...
Thanks
I have flashed again the official At&t rom, as adviced by Dr. Puthingan, and then the K's Final Rom to nothing.
The problem still there.
When I was installing an App to the Extended_Rom the intallation hangs, and after reset all the contens of Extended Rom have dissapeared.
I found only a FilesToBeDeleted folder winth garbage inside (look at screenshoot)
Hey,
I was in the same situation as you were in a couple of months ago...
I've always wanted to tinker around with WM6.1 but I too also found the Ext.Rom to be unstable...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2228473&postcount=703
I always found myself flashing back to the reliable Shamanix Ultimate 2.0 Final.
Finally, I tried this ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=406111
And, It's been surprisingly stable and no Ext.ROM to deal with.
Again, before installation, you'll have to follow Dr. P's instructions:

Hope this helps

You might want to try the official dopod rom then back whichever 6.1 you want. I found mine was better after doing that.
Hopefully the problems is solved....
I reinstall the At&T, as adviced by Dr. Puttinghan, hard-spl 7, and then the Faria/Dr. Puttinghan Clean Rom.
Now, all is working without issues..

Dynamic page pool, only 19M free RAM
First impression- it seems this rom has a page pool set to zero. Although the phone is amazingly fast, It has only 20M free RAM initially, without trying to install anything. Also- the memory vary down to 16M from time to time without any open app. SKTOOLS makes it 21M but it is too low for my needs. I have changed PP to be 2M and will re-flash and report.
Besides that, from 4 minutes playing with it, very nice look and feel. Will keep posting results soon.

Great ROM but not for me
So sorry to say that, but I can't have a use of this rom. i love everything about it, really, It is well cooked, with everything i need and very little to add.
But it has too much RAM occupied all the time. I tried canceling tasks and gain memory and it does not get enough free RAM for me. To begin with only 48M RAm are available (Chanvi gets 51M) and about 65%-66% is taken at all times without any plugin. iGO will not run properly with less than 20M RAM free. I am short 4-5M to be happy, so although i really think it is one hack of a rom, I can't use it for my needs.
If you don't need memory like i am- I recommend it. Best SIP/Keyboard and GUI I have seen up to date... just memory kills me.

nice feedback bigE!
very informative
Last V49 was good and I believe that this one is good too. I am against mixing of Manila2D and Titanium especially for Trinity. We need as much free RAM and Storage as we can get. So there is no need to have two interfaces. I tried to contact PhamQuang but without any success so am asking you people especially you arnooo to try to arrange with PhamQuang to cook Titanium only ROM.
Thanks.
Guys, if you want to have a lot of free RAM, my advice is stop using Manila2D or TF3D especially on WM 6.5!
The rom has a bug "RING TONE" - This ring tone file is corrupted or unavaible please choose a different ring tone .. the ring tone are all corruped

Ahhh, great advice. I don't use CHome, M2D and SPB when I need RAM freed. I turn today plugins off when I need memory yet even as 'naked' this rom is about 10M short of memory. Chanvi has cooked some better memory sensitive roms than that. However- as far as GUI and beauty, I like this one better. So in the matter of chosing between beauty and memory, alas, I chose Chanvi's.
There is no one Oz. of criticism here. Just an opinion.

This is a great rom I have had a good play with quite a few now and this one seems to be the better one as far as speed. I had a few problems with getting tomtom 7.9 to work but over come these all ok now.
GREAT WORK.
I tried to install this rom from as much as 4 different computers running XP and Vista, and could not flash. Every time the RUU gives me the Error 200 saying I must update the flashing tool. I tried the same ROM image with different RUU versions and none of them seems to work.
Am I missing something??
Thanks!!

downloaded it twice from different pc-s, different networks must be something else
It works grat. I really like the look, and it's really fast. Only problem is that it eats too much memory. I hope newer version will be bit more optimized.

Do you have SPL and radio rom updated. Try this link http://trinityguides.info , and try to update this first.
Do you have p3600 or p3600(I)? Very important!
This ROM is for P3600.
Regards,
Pozdrav drug Slovenac
I am currently running an older version of WM6.5 and did all upgrades before with no problems at all.
Radio: 1.56.70.11
SPL: SPR-1.20.Olipro
Thanks!
Pa pozdrav nazaj
Maybe something happened with that SPL. The last thing that I can suggest to you is to try to flash the HARD SPL again. Im using Des' Crash-Proof SPL and I think that I also had a problem with the Olipro.
Do you flashing from the three color screen or from the booted device?
Tried both, from bootloader and booted device :S I will now try to install this Hard-SPL you suggested and the new V51 rom
